PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE … since 1898

How It Began

On February 6, 1898, six of Seattle's most prominent theater

owners gathered to discuss how to handle an ongoing musi-

cians' strike. John Cort, brothers John W. and Thomas J.

Considine, H.L. Leavitt, Mose Goldsmith and Arthur G. Wil-

liams headed down to the Moran Brothers' shipyard on South

Charles Street to make a plan. According to most popular ac-

counts, after deciding to work together to settle the strike by

using piano players to replace the musicians, the men began

to discuss life. At that moment, the Order of Good Things was

born.

As their numbers grew, the Order chose the Bald Eagles as

their official emblem and changed the name of the organiza-

tion to "The Fraternal Order of Eagles, with a goal to "make

human life more desirable by lessening its ills and promoting

peace, prosperity, gladness and hope."

Touring theater troupes are credited with much of the Eagles'

early growth. Most members were actors, stagehands and

playwrights who carried the Eagles story from town to town

as they traversed the United States and Canada. The group's

early motto, "Skin'em," became the secret password to identi-

fy members

while the offi-

cial motto was

changed to

"Liberty,

Truth, Justice

and Equality."

Within 10

years of its

inception, the

organization boasted more than 1,800 Aeries scattered

throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico with a

membership exceeding 350,000. Members received free

medical attention for themselves and their families, weekly

payments in case of sickness and a funeral benefit - all valua-

ble services before the widespread availability of medical, dis-

ability and life insurance. The organization quickly became a leader in influencing na-

tional politics, pushing to create Mother's Day and eventually

Social Security, Medicare and more. The Eagles' growing

membership, comprised of many prominent local figures,

held a position of great influence in communities every-

where.

Continuing Our Quest For A Cure

In 2008, The Fraternal Order of Eagles made a promise to help find

a cure for diabetes, pledging $25 million to fund research efforts at

the F.O.E. Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa. Over

the last 10 years, our money has helped fund significant break-

throughs in the field of diabetes. Now, it's time to bring those re-

search efforts to the next level through the Bridge to the Cure.

The Bridge to the Cure aims to raise money to help fund exploratory

trials on new drugs being developed by our research team. These

trials will help determine whether or not these drugs could be of po-

tential use to help minimize the effects of diabetes, or possibly even

cure the debilitating disease.

Why is the Bridge to the Cure Important?

Our goal when starting the DRC project was to find a cure for diabe-

tes. In order to find that cure and make it available for millions, we

must have the ability to fund studies based on our research discov-

eries. Because diabetes drugs have varying success rates, it is diffi-

cult to receive funding for discovery trials from pharmaceutical

companies. Such tests must be funded independently, with the most

effective studies being licensed by pharmaceutical companies for

further study.

Funding these studies ourselves, instead of relying on outside

sources, allows us to accelerate the testing process and provides the

opportunity to potentially return an investment on our funding,

which would allow for fur-

ther studies and benefit

the FOE Charity Founda-

tion.

How will the Bridge work?

All funds collected will be

managed by the FOE Char-

ity Foundation under the

direction of the Board of

Grand Trustees. The DRC

will form an advisory committee consisting of DRC leadership, indi-

viduals with experience in the field of drug trials and a member of

the FOE's choosing. The advisory board will select projects which

have the best potential for success to recommend to the Board of

Grand Trustees. The Board of Grand Trustees will then decide

whether or not to release funds from the Bridge to the Cure to help

fund the trials.

How does a new drug come to market?

Initial testing must be done to ensure that the potential drug is via-

ble. This initial testing includes animal studies and if successful,

would culminate in strategic planning and outreach to pitch the

drug to pharmaceutical companies. From there, the companies

would fund human studies and efforts to obtain FDA approval. If all

steps are successful, the companies would then take the drug to

market.

What's the average amount of time it takes a new drug to reach mar-

ket?

The average time is from 4-8 years, depending on the regulatory

process. In the past, diabetes medications simply had to lower blood

sugar. Now, medications undergo much more rigorous testing to

ensure that blood sugar isn’t lowered at the sacrifice of other bodily

organs or functions.

Here we are in March

already. It has been a very active

year already and we still have

some exciting events coming up.

Your Eagle Riders Group is getting

ready for "Paws on the Throttle"

on March 17th. We would certain-

ly appreciate any help on that day

with setting up and cleaning up

after.

Next month at the second meeting, on April 18th, we

will be accepting nominations for officers for next year. Most

officer positions will be up for election and usually take about a

couple hours a week to fulfill the duties. If you have questions

about a particular officer position please ask. We need a strong

officer corps to have a strong Aerie and keep the doors open. I

hope to see some new faces for fresh ideas to keep YOUR Aerie

a fun and welcoming place to come to. If you want to be nomi-

nated you have to either be at the meeting to accept or submit

a letter to the Secretary prior to the meeting.

Finally, in May we have our Mothers Day celebration.

The Eagles were responsible for getting Mothers Day made into

a holiday and each year we have a big breakfast for all the

mothers of the Aerie. I hope you will come out and celebrate

with us. We will also have the election of officers at the first

meeting in May.

I look forward to seeing all of you around the Aerie and

keep soaring.

In two short months it will be time to nominate officers for next year. If you are interested in being an officer, or perhaps being on the nominat-ing committee to vet the perspective officers, please get with me as soon as possible. Worthy President: Scott Burger

Spring is a time associated with starting again, beginning a

new. We symbolize this through many ways: some may clean

house; literally cleaning the home and cleansing our bodies and

minds of things we fell bog us down, or lay a sickness upon us. This

may be to lessen our burdens possibly resulting in us cutting ties

with things , habits, or people who would seek to poison us. My ad-

vice to my fellow Eagles would be to remember our motto, “If I can-

not speak well of an Eagle, I shall not speak ill of him”.

I urge all of us to use this advice and wisdom not only in our

Aerie, but in our everyday lives. When we took our vows and said

our obligation, we had to listen to these wise words from each sta-

tion of our induction:

Liberty: “You have no right to ask of me, what you would not give

to me”

Truth: “Think before you promise, and promise only what you in-

tend to do”

Justice: “… Go to him and tell him of his misdeeds in private. For

is there one among us without Fault?”

Equality: “No matter what honors life may clothe you, you must go

naked to the Throne of God”

Why am I reminding you of what we all said and heard?

Why am I urging you to live your life free of trouble and strife- man

made and other wise? It is simply to try to remember our fellow

brothers Mark Sweeney and Sharon Guillory who were honored

with our Charter being draped in their honor. We have lost mem-

bers, brothers, friends, and family. Those who I have talked to de-

scribed our fellows as being those who would follow the Order’s

words through day to day life and were loved until the very end for

being honest. Truth and honesty isn’t something we are always

wanting to hear, but it something that we need to hear more fre-

quently than we would care to admit.

I leave you with the knowledge that no Aerie is better than ours at

uniting through times that are challenging. Lean on your brothers

as we will lean on you in our time of need.

Worthy Chaplain,

Curstin Rutherford

cient (Ephesians 3:16)
