Pentland State School

School Cluster Camp During week 7 of this term we went on a school camp to Daradgee which was a wonderful week engaging activities

during the day and nights. When we arrived on Monday to the Education Centre, it was the kids meeting all the other

children from the different schools. During the night time celebrations, the children all together played the chocolate

game which the children seemed to all really enjoy the game and getting back together with their friends from the

other schools.

On Tuesday, the children went to the meet the Centre’s special guest called ‘Roxanne’ which turned out to be a

snake and each child got the snake over their lap, this was happening while some of the brave teachers were at the

Rock climbing wall getting trained up for when the older children came to climb the wall. While the Prep to Year 2

children completed a low ropes course. For the night time entertainment we had a large fire where we roasted

yummy marshmallows.

On Wednesday all the children created their very own Daradgee Tie Dye T-shirt’s, which looked all very colourful

and then the older group went to the low ropes course and had great competition with each other. The younger

group went to the rock climbing wall where they did bouldering which is staying down the bottom of the rock

climbing wall and climbing across the wall instead of up the wall. For the night time fun we all got our musical

talents out with learning the Ukulele and getting a dancing shoes on for some fun.

On Thursday we hopped on our bus and went for a road trip to the ever glorious beach and we enjoyed playing

beach cricket and making sand castles but the highlight for most of us was when we were leaving and saw a

Cassowary bird. Then it was off to the Polly Creek where we did some scientific discoveries and then went for a

swim in the creek.

The Camp staff were fantastic and made the week very enjoyable for staff and students. We didn’t starve for the

week because the kitchen staff put together a good spread of food every day.

Darradgee Camp

This term we went on school camp to Darradgee Outdoor Environmental Education Centre, near

Innisfail. The students and staff both had a fantastic time. Thank you to Mr Nicholson, Miss

Andrea and Chappy for coming on camp and their extra effort and enthusiasm. Please read further

along in our Post and check out the photos.

Attendance

This term our attendance rate is 90.1%, which is a massive improvement

from term 1 and 2. This is great to see considering we have just come

through winter. The great news is that we have 0% unexplained absences,

well done to parents for phoning or Texting School when your child is

away.

Staffing

Mrs Bristow will be leaving Pentland State School at the end of this term.

Mrs Bristow will be moving to Mackay, as her husband has been successful

in obtaining a new job at the local council. Mrs Bristow will begin her new

teaching position at the beginning of Term 4, and continue into 2021.

I wish Mrs Bristow all the best at her new school in Mackay and would like to thank her for all her

hard work over the past three years at our school.

Replacing Mrs Bristow in term 4 in the year 3-6 classroom, will be Mrs Jessie Peagham. Jessie has

taught at our school before, and is very excited to be moving ‘home’ to teach at Pentland and be

closer to family.

Reading and Spelling Goals

The staff spent the pupil free day this term developing new reading and spelling goals for each

student based on the literacy continuum. Their goals are displayed in the P-2 classroom or data book,

and can also be found in your child’s communication book. I am looking forward to each child

reaching their goals next term!

Kindy The kindy students have been busy this term learning about the

ocean. We have made ocean bottles, star fish, sharks, turtles, and

much more! The students were very interested in learning how

octopuses camouflage and squirt ink when startled. We also set up

a tent and camping area in our dramatic role play space, and

enjoyed toasting marshmallows and telling stories around the fire.

Classroom Capers Mr Nicholson & Mrs P’s Littlies

Term 3 has been an action packed term at the Prep – Year 2 Classroom with the children making me very welcome

as part of Pentland State School. I have had a great term getting to know all the parents and children.

The children have been little Maths geniuses by engaging in fun lessons focused on; mass, capacity length and area

activities. We have been busy measuring and weighing objects around our

school.

Throughout English this term,

the children in the Prep and

year 2 have been working on

poetry. The prep students had to write a four line rhyming verse and

Year 1 and 2 students had to innovate a known poem. Their poems

are in this post! In the second half of the term Year 1 and 2 students

have been working hard researching and writing information reports.

The children have been learning all about the States and Territories in

Australia during HASS studies, we have all enjoyed our adventures

touring around Australia this term.

Have a great break and I am looking forward to seeing everyone again for Term 4.

Prep Science

to Classroon It is with regret and excitement that I write this

Pentland Post entry, my last ever. As some may

already know, Mr Bristow has been offered the

post of Economics Development Officer for

Mackay Regional Council. I have taken the

opportunity to work at Mackay District Special

School for Term 4 whilst awaiting my official

transfer position for 2021. As such, Friday 18th

September will be my last day working at Pentland

State School. I have loved working with the

students over the past three years and will keep

them fondly in my memory.

In English, Year 3 and 4 students have been

working on Rowan of Rin. We have completed

reading the quest and learnt how fools do not fear,

fearing and continuing is real bravery. We will now

decide which of the events was the most crucial to

the story and explain our reasons why. Year 5 and

6 have written their letters to the future, with

some very poignant details about the year that is

2020. They are currently preparing their debate on

which short story they preferred and reasons why.

We have been practicing asking key questions in

class in preparation.

In Maths, we are continuing our push on basic

facts as we are now finding these necessary in

every part of Maths. In week 7, we conducted the

Basic Facts Test. Alexis increased her speed by 4

levels and Brooke by 3 levels – congratulations girls, keep up the hard work.

In Design Technology, Year 5 and 6 are learning the competing factors behind designs. It cost more

important than ethics, or aesthetics more important than function. These will be some tricky

decisions to make when they create their containment system, designed to keep people in or out.

Future Year 5/6 Dear students of the future,

My name is Joshua Kazmaier, I am 11 and I live out of Pentland. The reason why I’m writing this letter is because of COVID19. I’m wondering if Pentland state school is the same? It was very nice when I as at school. Is it nice now?

If you don’t know what COVID19 Coronavirus is, it is a virus and it started in 2020 January and was spread by people coughing. Coronavirus locked us up for six weeks we had to do school work at home so we wouldn’t get sick. It sucked! I hope it doesn’t exist by the time you read this.

In Charters Towers there was a toilet paper shortage because there was a silly person that brought too many. It became silly it was very funny. Next time you go into town, go straight to the top section and buy some.

COVID19 was bad enough, now there was a poor kid named Corona and he was 5 years old and people made fun of him.

If you are reading this there are two tanks near the high set classroom and there’s a little something in there.

Dear students of the future, Hello and good to morning students my name Brooke Jenkins I am 10 years old and I live on a property. It is the year 2020 and it has been great apart from COVID19, a big sickness from China. I wish I could meet you, because between you and me, I don’t like to do assessments.

You know how I said, apart from COVID19, well in term 2 this year my school was closed for 5 weeks and we did home school. But I did miss seeing all my friends and the teachers. Still I am happy that I did not get sick. Sometimes it was hard because Mum did not understand some of the English, but the teacher and I had a face time and it was much easier. Will they have face time in 50 years from now? This year the Queensland government have approved the Copper String

Project to get the electricity from Hughenden solar power farm to Mount Isa and to Townsville. I think it will be great to get more power than normal. It will be amazing to be able to use the renewable energy from Kennedy Energy Park. I wonder if we have more energy parks in the future and if there is any coal left in the future?

This year, the Flinders Shire council have been very busy because they have opened a lake in Hughenden. I’ve seen it, it is so big. It was $11 million to build, but it was worth it because it is awesome. The council have put a long of fingerlings in (tiny, baby fish) so people can go fishing, take the walking track around it, and you can drive boats on the lake. If it is still there in 50 years, go and try it out, it is so fun. Well, I better go soon, but before I go, I have to tell you that there is a little tin box under the green plastic rainwater tank in the corner on the gutter side. The tanks are near the tennis courts and I hope that the tanks are still there when you come alone. I hope you like the little gifts we put in there for you if there is another outbreak. Dear student of the future,

Hello, my name is Althea Hurren and I’m 11 years old and a grade 6 student at Pentland State School. All my life I’ve lived in Pentland, a small, wonderful town. I live in a house just across from this school, so it’s easy to get here. I have two sisters, one that’s 2 grades younger and one that’s 1 grade older. It’s funny because our names all start with an ‘A’!

All over the world there’s a big pandemic around, it’s called COVID-19 or Coronavirus. At the shops there is a shortage of almost everything. I don’t know why, but people are fighting over toilet paper! The shelfs are always empty. There’s no sugar, flour, pasta and way more things are gone. I really don’t feel good about Coronavirus because we can’t get much when we go shopping for groceries. I wonder if you’re going to search it up in the future.

Other than that, our school recently got a new touch board it’s really fun to use. We use it for teaching and learning, sometimes we use it for games, if we have finished our work and we are good! It’s pretty cool because the teacher can sit anywhere in the classroom and what’s on their iPad will mirror onto the board. The only thing is that on the Apple TV, we cannot use the touch screen. I wonder if they will update the app to let you be able to use the touch board.

Also, east of us, there’s a place called Hughenden, maybe you’ve been there? Hughenden’s got a new lake, the opening wasn’t very good because the first time they didn’t have enough water, but now they’ve put fingerlings in it. They could be putting other big fish in the lake so they can do fishing competitions. I wonder if the lake has dried out, or maybe it is smaller in the future.

I would like to tell you more about me and the past but I hope you can relate with my life and I would like to know about you too. Maybe Pentland and this school will be bigger in 50 years’ time. Hopefully this helps you get a better connection to Pentland and helps you know more about the past. But if you go downstairs, you should see a tennis court and near it will probably be two water tanks one green and one that’s silver (if those are still their colours) under one will be a tin box, just underground, with pictures of the school, me and 2020!

Hello future students of Pentland.

My name is Denan, I am in grade six and I am the oldest in the school in 2020. I have been at the school for five years. At the moment there is about 20 children in the school. I am going to write about what it was like to breathe in the year 2020.

At the beginning of this year, and late 2019, there were bushfires that caused a lot of devastation. It killed 48 million animals and burnt 46 million acres of land and devastated lots of families. I hope that people have learnt not to be stupid with fire and that there have been no more bushfires like this since.

When one person was seen with a trolley full of toilet paper for stockpiling, within three weeks the shelves were stripped of toilet paper. It was stupidity and hard for

old people to shop without being robbed of toilet paper by people whom were very rude. Don’t worry it was better after they restricted how much you could buy. Still, people stole and hurt people for the toilet paper.

COVID19 is a virus that has no known cure and swiped our lives. We were home schooled we lost our loved ones and all of it was really hard for me. I could not see my friends, the news was on all the time and it sucked. Hope you and your family doesn’t have to go through this kind of thing. Good luck

There is a time capsule that has stuff from me, Brooke, Josh and Thea. Reminds me of 2009 when I was born and swine flu was around, I caught it but I survived and so can you.

Bootcamp with Riley This term the students and adults have been keeping fit with weekly bootcamp

sessions. This is a great opportunity to socialise, enhance well-being, improve fitness

and get healthy. Riley has commented that Althea and Alexis Hurren do the BEST

pushups he has ever seen from students! The adult weigh in and fitness challenge

testing was on this week and it was great to see so many improvements! We are

hoping to continue the sessions next term for another six weeks, if you’re interested

please come along on Thursdays 3pm.

Animal Farm Last week we had MacDonalds Travelling animal farm visit the school. The students enjoyed

feeding, brushing and caring for the animals. They even got to name the baby goat!

Another awesome athletics carnival is done and dusted.

It began with a sleep over on Thursday night featuring dinner,

games and a movie followed by an early night.

Everyone had a fantastic time on the day even though they

had an early start. The students made us super proud with

their stellar efforts. Their enthusiasm is to be commended.

Well done guys; you’re the best.

Although Ravenswood took the trophy on the day we had a

few winners of our own. Ashtyn, Brooke and Mackenzie were

age champions (WHOOT, WHOOT) and our parents won the

adult relay.

They say winners are grinners! Well check out the grins on

these winners.

P&C Report Hi Everyone, End of term 3 already this year has flown by. Even though we were not able to do much earlier in the year due to Covid 19 the P and C have managed to still raise some money. The athletics carnival in August was a huge success and a big thank you must go to everyone who helped cook and helped in the canteen. Well done to the Pentland students and teachers who put in a big effort to make the day a great success. Also the adults relay team who regained the trophy this year!!! The P and C also did the catering for a dog and cattle handling school which was run by Dry Tropics over at the camp draft grounds. This was an awesome effort and we raised a little over $2000. This was breakfast, smoko, lunch and dinner for 3 days. Thanks heaps team it was a big effort but well worth it. Another little money earner we did was the cookie dough. As well as our fortnightly tuckshops, that we have recommenced this term, we have been busy busy, busy! On Monday 14th September, we held our Annual General Meeting. Chappies Corner

It has been a funtastic semester. On camp it looks like Mr Nicolson is putting his

hand up my ear in a selfie whilst Miss Andrea’ is not wanting to watch. During the

semester we had a cartoon mask day with Bluey, Princess Elsa and many other

guest masks wearers. Breakfast Club has started before parade Friday mornings

and it is good to see so many faces.

French cricket was introduced and although some students were slow joining in,

everyone soon got in the swing of things. One of the things I enjoy is watching

how the students are kind to each other and then I have the privilege of

presenting them with certificates on parade. This is a difficult task as these

students are regularly kind to each other. As I listen through the week, I hear

how this kindness expresses itself in helping another student. Keep up the great

parenting it shows through your children.

Unfortunately Playgroup has been a little sporadic this term for one thing or another. We have managed to fit a few in though with awesome attendance. Keep up the good work parents, I love seeing the wee ones and watching them grow. These are a few pics of our construction themed playgroup from week 6 where we built structures with blocks and made houses out of biscuits, icing sugar and lollies. Who doesn’t love building things? The shop, kitchen play area and construction table was such a hit I will leave them there for the next couple of playgroups. This week’s theme will be feelings and emotions; so we will have lots of lovely laughing children.

The last playgroup for the term will be elephants. Quiet little elephants hopefully. See you there.

Pumpkin, Ham and Leek Quiche

Ingredients

600g butternut pumpkin peeled cut into 2cm pieces

1 olive oil spray

2 sheets frozen ready-rolled puff pastry thawed

1 leek pale section only halved lengthways

4 eggs free range

100ml reduced-fat milk

150g ham

25g baby spinach leaves

3/4 cup Mainland cheddar cheese grated

Method

Preheat oven to 200C fan-forced. Line a roasting pan with

baking paper. Place pumpkin in prepared pan. Spray lightly

with olive oil and season with pepper. Roast for 25 minutes

or until tender and light golden.

Meanwhile, wash, dry and thinly slice the leek then place

into a microwave-safe bowl. Cover with damp paper towel

and microwave on High/100% for 1 and 1/2 minutes, or

until leek is soft. Set aside to cool.

Cut 23cm round from 1 pastry sheet and 3cm x 5cm wide

strips from the second sheet. Press the pastry round over the

base of a lightly greased, 6cm deep x 22cm base springform

pan. Use the strips to line the side, press strips and base

together to seal. Place a sheet of baking paper over pastry.

Half-fill with dried beans. Bake for 18-20 minutes until

edges light golden. Remove the paper and beans and bake a

further 10-15 minutes until the base is golden. Remove

from the oven.

Whisk the eggs and milk together in a jug and set aside for

5 minutes to allow the bubbles to subside. Combine the

pumpkin, leek, ham, spinach and cheese then spoon into the

pastry case. Pour egg mixture evenly over the filling, return

to the oven and bake for 30 minutes or until set in the

centre. Stand 5 minutes before cutting into wedges to serve.

Tim Tam Cheesecake

Ingredients

350 g Arnott's Tim Tams

80 g butter melted

375 g cream cheese cubed softened

1/2 cup caster sugar

1 tsp vanilla essence

1 cup thickened cream

3 tsp gelatine powder

1/4 cup boiling water

200 g white chocolate cooled melted

Method

Place 250 g of the Tim Tams in a blender and process into

fine crumbs.

Add the butter and process to combine. Press the mixture

into spring-form baking pan and refrigerate 30 minutes.

Beat the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla with an electric

mixer until smooth, then beat in the cream.

Mix the gelatine with the boiling water. Stir in the gelatine

mixture, dissolved in 1/4 cup of boing water and white

chocolate.

Chop the remaining biscuits and stir into the cream cheese

mixture then pour over the Tim Tam base.

Cover and refrigerate until set.
