Transcript of Pentland State School have had a nice start to Term 2 here in the classroom at Pentland State...
Wednesday 20th April, Chappy hosted a crazy hair day at Pentland State School to raise money for the Queensland Cancer Council. Although a couple of students were a bit slow to warm up to the challenge, they soon got on board. The staff however didn’t need any prompting. There were some very “Out There” hairdos. Some students took it a little further and added facial expressions to match their hairdos. I bet you can’t guess who! We all had a great day and more importantly, raised some cash to help with cancer research. Well done everyone.

Pentland State School
Reading
Congratulations to Jkya Lipke and Joshua Kazmaier on winning the McGrath Family
Reading Scholarship for term 1! Both students improved immensely and we couldn’t
decide on just one. Keep up the great work boys!
NAPLAN
On Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th May, students in years 3 and 5
across Australia will participate in NAPLAN testing. We have been revising some
concepts with our year 3 and 5 students in preparation for the tests. These tests
provide us with information on students’ strengths and areas for improvement and also
compares our school to like schools, the state and the national mean. Good luck
Angela and Brandon!
Anzac Day
I would like to thank the Pentland Progress Association for another wonderful Anzac
Day. The students enjoyed learning the song and performing on the day.
Farewell
This will be my last Pentland Post for a while! I am taking maternity leave and my last
day at school will be Friday 13th May. I am looking forward to a new challenge, of a
newborn baby and toddler. I would like to wish Ella all the best as Acting Principal. I am
sure she will do a wonderful job!
Yours in learning

McGRATH FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
(IN MEMORY OF OUR MUM, BETTY FLANNERY)
Mum was born in NSW and lived most of her childhood in the Eastern Suburbs. Her
Father travelled for work and her Mother went with him. Mum was raised by her
Aunt Maude who was an Inspector of Schools. Aunt Maude trained Mum as a
Teacher and her first teaching jobs were in local primary schools around the
Eastern Suburbs. This was in the early 1940’s during WW11.
After her marriage in 1947, Mum moved to Victoria and raised 5 children. She also
went back to teaching and for many years taught Needlework (at Footscray Girls
Secondary School), which subsequently became part of Domestic Science.
After remarrying in 1969 Mum became mother to 2 more children. She continued
working and finished her teaching career at Doveton High School.
Mum had two great loves aside from her family. She often took disadvantaged girls
under her wing and aside from teaching them how to sew, she also taught them
basic hygiene and social skills.
Her other great love was reading and in her later years could always be found with
a book by her side. In honour of this, we would like to award one child each term
who has most improved their reading skills, with $100 to go towards their
education needs.
Mum always said “Reading is knowledge.”
The term one recipients for the
McGrath Family Scholarship
are Jkya Lipke and Joshua
Kazmaier, for outstanding
improvement in reading this
term.
Pentland State School Staff and
Students would like to thank Eileen
and Frank McGrath for their generous
donation towards the reading
scholarship. This is a great incentive
for the students to improve in their
reading.
Classroom Capers We have had a nice start to Term 2 here in the classroom at Pentland State School. As
always, we place a large focus on English in our classroom and this will continue
throughout the term. Here is what the students have been doing so far in English this
term:
The P-2 students have been writing lots of sentences in English this.
Their writing has improved remarkably since the beginning of the
year. The Prep students are now including language features such
as adjectives into their writing and the Year 1/2 students are
moving away from simple sentences and into compound sentences
that include a variety of language features, such as noun groups
and verb groups.
The Year 3/4 students have been doing a novel study on ‘The
Bungawitta Blog,’ in English. They have really enjoyed listening to the
novel and studying the language features used to describe the
characters, behaviour and setting in this text.
At the moment the Year 5/6 students are learning about animation in English and how
animated movies are produced. The students are extremely engaged in this unit and
have spent some time analysing animated movies such as Chicken Run and How to
train your Dragon. In the next few weeks the students will be creating their own
animation, which they are really looking forward to!
SSP
If you have entered out classroom this year, you will have noticed all the windows have been
covered with SSP (speech sound pics) sound clouds. SSP is the spelling program we are currently
teaching here in Pentland and we have had a cracking start. Students are exploring spelling choices
and understanding the different letters and the combinations of letters that can create various
sounds. The children are enjoying our SSP lessons and the engaging ways SSP can be delivered.
NEW STAFF Hello Everyone; let me introduce myself. My name is Andre’a Holzwart. My family and I purchased “Rangeside Station” at Torrens Creek nearly 8 years ago. I have 3 grown up children which I have taught all their schooling lives on distance education, through to year 12, as we have lived on remote properties through Queensland and the Northern Territory. It had its challenging times, as well as very many rewards.
KINDY
Kindy has started with a bang! We are very lucky to be part of the remote kindy pilot program. Jack and I have spent the first couple of weeks getting the Pentland State School veggie garden going, and are waiting patiently for the first crop to appear. We have planted tomatoes, beans and snow peas. We are also learning about one another, planning visual time tables and completing weather charts. Jack has been working on a Unit entitled “All About Me,” and exploring and talking about his family and himself. I am looking forward to a fun term with the Kindy program.

Soccer
This term as part of our Sporting Schools, the students will have soccer training
every Friday from 8:15am-9:15am. The soccer training is being run by the PCYC in
Charters Towers, who will travel out to Pentland. This soccer training commenced
last Friday and from the laughing and cheering I could hear in the classroom, I could
tell it was a huge hit with the kids. Please make sure your child is at school by
8:15am so they can get the most out of the program! We will no doubt be in fine
form for the upcoming Cluster Soccer Carnival at Ravenswood in Week 7.
Last Friday we had a visit from a cricket coach who was travelling through.
He stayed for an hour and played games with the students. The children had a
great time and learnt some of the finer skills of cricket. Watch this space....we
might have the next Don Bradman or Betty Wilson in our midst! Some would
definitely have argueing with the umpires down pat; which says a lot for our
teaching persuasive arguments.
At our recent P & C meeting we discussed a range of topics. We have the Pentland Community Sports Day
coming up which we will be catering for. At the moment, we are looking at cakes and fruit for morning tea
and sausage hotdogs for lunch. We have decided to do a simple donation for morning tea and lunch this
time around to keep the costs down for families. If there is anyone out there that is interested in donating
some baked goods to go towards the day, we would greatly appreciate it.
We also have a PCYC Disco coming up on the 10th of June, held at the Pentland Sports Club. We will also be
catering for this event. Further details will be provided closer to the event.
School camp was discussed and we looked at the itinerary that has been planned out so far. School camp is
5th – 9th September. P & C will be putting in a lump sum to go towards some of the costs. The itinerary looks
awesome! I would encourage every family to send their child along. It will be a great experience for all ages.
Tuckshop has been continuing every fortnight this term. I would like to thank Kay, Jasmine and Katie for
running tuckshop this term while Mishelle and I have a little break.
That’s all for now. See you at the next event.

Touch
Our newest student and his little sister have a great way to get to school.
I am so jealous, Jack and Jeanne Rae.
When God Created Mothers
When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was
into His sixth day of "overtime" when the angel
appeared and said. "You're doing a lot of fiddling
around on this one."
And God said, "Have you read the specs on this
order?" She has to be completely washable, but not
plastic. Have 180 moveable parts...all replaceable.
Run on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that
disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure
anything from a broken leg, to a disappointed love
affair. And six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said. "Six pairs
of hands.... no way."
It's not the hands that are causing me problems,"
God remarked, "it's the three pairs of eyes that
mothers have to have."
That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. God
nodded.
One pair that sees through closed doors when she
asks, 'What are you kids doing in there?' when she
already knows. Another pair in the back of her head
that sees what she shouldn't, but what she has to
know, and of course the ones here in front that can
look at a child when he goofs up and say. 'I
understand and I love you' without so much as
uttering a word."
“God," said the angel touching his sleeve gently,
"Get some rest, tomorrow...."
“I can't," said God, "I'm so close to creating
something so close to myself. Already I have one
who heals herself when she is sick...can feed a
family of six on one kilo of mince...and can get a
nine year old to stand under a shower."
The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly.
"It's too soft," she sighed.
“But tough!" said God excitedly. "You can imagine
what this mother can do or endure."
“Can it think?"
“Not only can it think, but it can reason and
compromise," said the Creator.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across
the cheek.
“There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that
you were trying to put too much into this model."
“It's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear."
“What's it for?"
“It's for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain,
loneliness, and pride."
“You are a genius”, said the angel.
