Pentecost Sunday The Birthday of the Church
“When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim”
(Acts of the Apostles: 2).

Dear parishioners: The Evangelist John gives us the setting for this post-Resurrection appearance of Jesus: “On the
evening of the first day of the week…” It was Easter Sunday evening. Jesus’ disciples were assembled in a
room where the “doors were locked…for fear of the Jews.” Sometimes, we pray or go to Church “out of fear.” Since it was Sunday evening, Jesus’ disciples were assembled “out of fear” to celebrate the Eucharist – it was probably a ‘house-church.’ The ‘fear’ was probably caused by their past failures – betrayal, denial or worse – and by the hostile atmosphere toward the followers of Christ.
Jesus greets them, “Peace be with you.”
This was the greeting that Jesus would have
shared with them at the Last Supper: “Peace is my farewell to you; my peace is my gift to you; and I do not give it to you as the world gives it to you” (John 14: 27-28). Next, Jesus shows them his hands and his side with wound marks inflicted during the Crucifixion (John 20: 25). He wanted to assure them that he was not a delusory figment of their imagination. In his wounds, He wanted to “show them” the meaning of sin. Jesus repeats his greeting, “Peace to you.”
Or, is it a greeting? “Peace” is something that Jesus gives as
gift to his disciples as they begin their ministry, namely, the assurance of his presence with them. If they are to bring “peace” to troubled souls and to a troubled world, they must first possess that “peace” in their own lives. “Peace” is that calm in the eye of the storm. What all of us seek most in life is that inner peace. “Peace” comes from an intimate relationship with Jesus. There is a difference between ‘forgiveness’ and ‘healing.’ Jesus’ followers knew that he forgave them through multiple
meetings after the Resurrection. Even though they knew that they were forgiven, they still remembered their past failures.
They were in need of a ‘healing of memories.’ Jesus offers them this healing as they begin their public ministry so that
they, in turn, will offer that forgiveness and healing – “Peace” – to those who are in need of it. . Our graduates – their photos are on the next page - are going out into a troubled, wounded world, captured in R.E.M., the Rock Band 90’s hit, ”Everybody hurts sometimes.” May they be agents of God’s peace and healing, especially the “healing of memories.” Fr. Nick

MONTH 2 Developing Baby -- "I'm dancing!" Spiritual Adoption Program Your spiritually adopted baby is making progress developing all of her external
features and internal organs. Her brain is functioning at 40 days. Her mother can hear her heart beat now on an ultrasonic stethoscope. Baby-teeth buds are present at 6-1/2 weeks. The central nervous system is functioning and 40 muscle sets begin their first exercises. From this moment, your spiritually adopted baby grows and refines her body. But, everything she needs to survive after birth is already present by the end of the eighth week. She is now called a "fetus," a Latin word meaning "little one." Ultrasound reveals that this little one can now spring, flip, and jump--her first dance steps! Psalm 139:13 - "You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb."
