Thoughts from Pastor John Grace and peace be to you from our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ!
It doesn’t seem like a year ago that I sat down with
Pastor Amanda and Jean Schwartz to discuss GA’s
next Ambassador trip to Tanzania, but it was. I
remember the meeting quite well, feeling a bit like a
deer in the headlights, trying to take in all the
information Amanda and Jean were sharing about
Tanzania, the commitment GA had made with our
brothers and sisters of Iringa and the upcoming trip I
WAS supposed to lead. As they spent time
explaining what Bega Kwa Bega was, a program of
partnership between the St. Paul Area Synod and the
Iringa Diocese, they explained that it had been since
2013 that people had traveled from our church to visit
our partners in Tanzania. It was in that meeting that
we agreed that our next trip would take place 2017
and I would be going. I left feeling incredibly excited
that I could go on behalf of our entire congregation,
but overwhelmed with what just this meant.
As I write to you, we are just weeks away and I am
thrilled to share that my feeling of nerves have been
replaced with excitement and anticipation of all that
awaits the four of us ambassadors who will go as rep-
resentatives of our beloved church. My travel compan-
ions will be Carol Sandberg, Nancy Johnson and Catie
Madison, all three who have been on this trip
previously. I will freely admit my nerves have been
reduced knowing I am traveling with a group of pros.
There is much to celebrate already and we haven’t
even left yet. One of the items we are bringing for our
two partner congregations is banners they will be able
to hang in their worship spaces. The best part about
these banners is they have many of your handprints
on them. You see...these banners aren’t
simply from the 4 of us, but from all of us. This part-
nership with our sisters and brothers in
Tanzania isn’t simply about those of us who are
going, but about our partnership as a church
community with the Lutherans of Tanzania. Thank
you being a part of this gift.
On the first Saturday of May, we hosted a dinner and
silent auction that turned out to be a fantastic event
and very successful! We exceeded our goal of raising
$3,000 by over a thousand dollars and we had a great
night of fellowship at the same time. There are many
who worked very hard to make the dinner a success
and many that donated items for our silent auction.
Thank you will never encompass our appreciation for
your generous support!
When we return we will look forward to sharing with
you information about our trip and the many ways
we experienced God in our adventures. If you are
wondering how you can support us between now and
when we return, please find some suggestions. We
invite you to join us in worship on Sunday, June 11th,
when the four of us will be ready to receive your pray-
ers and blessings for the journey ahead. Additionally
we would ask you to keep us in your prayers while we
are gone.
Finally, join us on Sunday, July 9th, during our
worship services and hear about all the amazing
things that took place and give thanks to God for this
ever growing partnership.
Your Partner on the Journey.
Pastor John Hierlinger

Thoughts from Pastor Amanda Grace and peace to you from God our Father and Our
Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
On the occasion of my ordination four summers, ago I
received a book of blessings from a pastor friend to
accompany me in my early years of ministry. This
book, “To Bless the Space Between Us” by John
O’Donohue, has been a source of prayer and
meditation for me, a place to turn in the joys, concerns
and griefs of ministering with our congregation and to
one another.
This summer as I turn to another birthday celebration,
this blessing seems very appropriate for this season of
my life with Gustavus Adolphus and for me personally.
I invite you to hear the words of this blessing and to
invite the words into your own heart as you celebrate
and transition within the seasons of your life. And for
those who have had a birthday this year (that’s you!),
Happy Birthday and may the God of peace be with
you this year and always.
Thank you all for your kind words of support in the
times of learning and heartache of my life. Thank you
all for the joyfulness of your gracious presence and
compassionate hearts and willingness to be gospel-
centered Christians passionate for God’s love for all
people everywhere. Thank you for the gifts that may
go unnoticed by me, by others in our congregation, by
your friends, but never unnoticed by our God. And
thank you for the ways in which we as Gustavus
Adolphus Lutheran Church minister together in God’s
world and for God’s people.
It is my joy to share with you the good news that my
husband and I anticipate the birth of our child this
fall. Many of you have held us in prayer as we have
encountered the heartache of pregnancy loss, and so, at
this time, we simply ask that you hold us in prayer as
we tenderly hope that this pregnancy will bring us the
joy of parenthood. Thank you.
God’s peace be with you,
Pastor Amanda Simons
Blessed be the mind that dreamed the day
The blueprint of your life
Would begin to glow on earth,
Illuminating all the faces and voices
That would arrive to invite
Your soul to growth.
Praised be your father and mother,
Who loved you before you were,
And trusted to call you here
With no idea who you would be.
Blessed be those who have loved you
Into becoming who you were meant to be,
Blessed be those who have crossed your life
With dark gifts of hurts and loss
That have helped school your mind
In the art of disappointment.
When desolation surrounded you,
Blessed be those who looked for you
Urgent to open a blue window
In the gray wall formed around you.
Blessed be the gifts you never notice,
Your health, eyes to behold the world,
Thoughts to countenance the unknown,
Memory to harvest vanished days,
Your heart to feel the world’s waves,
Your breath to breathe the nourishment
Of distance made intimate by earth.
On this echoing-day of your birth,
May you open the gift of solitude
In order to receive your soul;
Enter the generosity of silence
To hear your hidden heart;
Know the serenity of stillness
To be enfolded anew
By the miracle of your being.
Amen.

OUR LIFE TOGETHER
Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church is financed entirely by the generous, direct financial gifts of its members and friends. There are several ways you can bless this mission of Jesus with your gifts: 1. Place your check or cash in the offering plate
during the service. Envelopes are in the pews. 2. Electronic Funds Transfer from our website,
gachurch.org (upper right corner). It gives you options to have your weekly, bimonthly or monthly offerings deducted from your checking or savings account and deposited directly to the GA Church bank account.
3. Bill Pay. Follow the directions for your bank or credit union to create GA as a Payee at 1669 Arcade St. N, St. Paul, MN 55106, and choose to make a regular weekly or monthly offering.
4. Stock Transfer to the church. For more information, contact Maggie Kidnie in the business office, 651.289.9885.
PENTECOST IS SUNDAY,
JUNE 4
This festival derives its name from
the Jewish festival of Pentecost,
observed fifty days after Passover.
On the fiftieth day of Easter, we
celebrate the Holy Spirit as the power of God among
us that heals, forgives, inspires, and unites. In the
reading from Acts, images of wind and fire describe
the Spirit poured out on disciples of all nations. In
John’s gospel, the risen Christ breathes the Spirit on
his followers on Easter evening. In the one Spirit we
are baptized into one body, and at the Lord’s table
the Spirit unites us for witness in the world.
HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY IS
SUNDAY, JUNE 11
Jesus sends his disciples forth to baptize in the name
of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. More
than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our
faith: we have experienced the God of creation made
known in Jesus Christ and with us always through
the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy
Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the
creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear
witness to our faith.
SUMMER TRADITION AT GA! Join our summer pick-up choir the
Second Sunday of the month in June,
July, and August! We rehearse in the
sanctuary at 8:15 am, and then we sing
during the 9:00 am worship service.
BUY A TOOL,
SUPPORT HABITAT
This June our congregation will participate in a
Habitat for Humanity build on the East Side to
assist low-income families in their dream of home
ownership. You can support Habitat for
Humanity in a variety of ways this month: Sign

the build week of June 12-16. Give to the
monthly special concerns offering to support this
Habitat build. And participate in our Habitat

support our costs for this build...a box of nails for
$5...a tape measure for $10...a hammer for $20...a
handsaw for $30...an electric drill for $50...a
chainsaw for $100. List “Buy A Tool” on your
check or Simply Giving donation. Thank you!

OUR LIFE TOGETHER
GA COMMUNITY GARDEN
This spring we entered into our third summer of
partnership with the Farm-Faith Project through
the Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul and
Hmong-American Partnership (HAP) to provide
gardening space to recent immigrants. The Farm-
Faith Project connects inner city congregations who
have some land space with local immigrants who are
in need of land for growing produce to support their
families. Many of the immigrants who garden at our
GA Community Garden come from the Karen
community, an ethnic group from Myanmar that
has faced persecution in their home nation and
sought refuge at camps along the border with
Thailand until resettling in Western nations as
refugees. Our community garden offers over a dozen
raised beds for our Karen brothers and sisters
enrolled in the Farm-Faith Project as they adjust to
life in the United States. Coming from a mostly
agricultural-focused society, the gardens provide a
source of familiarity, serenity and growth, in
addition to the tending and harvesting of produce.
In May a group of Farm-Faith gardeners and GA
members gathered on Sunday, May 21, to clean the
garden and prepare it for the coming season. Thank
you to all of those who assisted in preparing the
garden for another year of growth.

SYNOD
ASSEMBLY
Annually delegates from the 115 congregations of
our St. Paul Area Synod gather together every
May for two days to conduct the business of our
synod and gather in fellowship to build intra-
congregational relationships. This year Council
President Dan Shogren, former Council President
Nancy Nelson, former Council President Deb
Hogen, and Treasurer Brett Bowman represented
Gustavus Adolphus at the Synod Assembly as our
delegates togehter with Pastor John and Pastor
Amanda. The main business of our assembly was
the election of the vice-president of the synod and
the passing of the 2018 synodical budget. We also
participated in breakout workshop sessions for
various ministry engagements and listened to a
moderated conversation about the relationship
between the ELCA and the Roman Catholic
Church with Bishop Patricia Lull and Archbishop
Bernard Hebda. GA member Teresa Hermandson-
Olson was nominated and elected to serve as the
young adult representative to the Saint Paul
Area Synod Council for a four-year term .
A HUGE THANK YOU, GENEROUS GA Members, for
both your financial support and the helpful hands
that packed The Sheridan Project grocery bags into
backpacks at Farnsworth Elementary School this
past school year!! Because of your generosity, we were
able to give weekend food to 100 children on the
Eastside of St. Paul. Those volunteers with the
“Happy Helpful Hands” include Marge & Perry Ball,
Bonnie & Roger Carle, Dick Carle, Diane Fitzel, Janet
Haiden, Pr. John Hierlinger and his father, Greg
Hierlinger, Jean Muehlenthaler, Len Peterson, Nancy
Johnson, Suzy Johnson, Elaine Rhode, Barb Surine,
Maggie & Kevin Kidnie and Bev Challgren. What a
blessing you have all been as God’s hands and feet to
the children of Farnsworth!
I recently had an opportunity to visit The Sheridan
Story site on Patton Road in Roseville. As of May,
2017, The Sheridan Story provided food bags in 143
schools across the Metro, that is 5,000 students per
week who received weekend food. There are 650 indi-
viduals and 117 supporting churches and companies
who donate funds to purchase groceries. GA is in good
company! Sheridan’s goal for the 2017-18 school year
is to expand their program into 205 schools.
YOU have changed the story of child hunger in MN!!!

OUR NEXT NEWSLETTER WILL BE
THE SEPTEMBER 2017 ISSUE
A HELLO AND A GOODBYE AT GA This past month, we received notification from Minnesota Lisu
Church of Jesus Christ, one of our tenant congregations, that
they are leaving Gustavus Adolphus. With excitement they
explained that their church had grown large enough to put
them in a place where they could purchase their own church
building. A quote from Pastor La Wu, "From 2013, your church
welcomed us, embracing into your bosom and provided us the
activity room to worship, later choir room and Chapel, one
lev el after another. We have been taken care of like a feeble
baby under the nursing care of the mother. For this we are
always thankful to you and will never be forgotten in our hearts and our history." We as a church, thank God
for the growth they have experienced and the new places they are going. Join us in celebrating this partnership
on Sunday, July 9th. Between the services we will have cake and coffee as well as time for fellowship. At the
same time the Lisu church will be leaving, we will welcome a new congregation into our GA building. This is a
new church being started by leaders from local Hmong congregations. We are still working on the details, but
we expect Church of The Way to begin worshiping with us on Sunday, July 16th. We ask you to give them a
warm welcome as they begin their work here.
