MAY 31, 2020 A Birthday Present from God

What a nice way to come back to church--by celebrating the Solemnity of Pentecost. This feast is called the “birthday of the Church,” for

through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Church was established. Through the Holy Spirit, the Church becomes a sacrament, which is a

help along the way toward salvation. While the Church is a sacrament, it has the seven sacraments that lead and guide humanity to God.

Recently I heard a story of a professor of sacraments at a seminary for the formation of priests, which, mind you, was not our own. The

professor had a comment from a student’s evaluation that took him aback. The comment from the student was that he didn’t understand

why the professor thought the sacraments were the most important things in the world. When the professor shared this evaluation with his

colleagues, they all commiserated with the professor, understanding that indeed the sacraments are the best things in the world. In fact, I

will add, and they would agree, the sacraments are essential in living our life united to God. Indeed, that is the purpose of the sacraments,

to unite us to God now and forever. The sacraments, however, can only come to be through the power of the Holy Spirit, which is God,

the third person of the Holy Trinity.

We give praise to God today for the Holy Spirit that never abandons us and leads us to fullness of life.

Amen? Amen!

Catholic Social Teaching: What is its History? This series presented by Monsignor Frank Lane and live streamed from St. Cecilia concludes this Tuesday evening , June 2, at 7 PM on the St. Cecilia YouTube channel.

Monsignor creates a Scriptural context for the understanding of the responsibility of believers to worship God, look after each other and attend to the real needs of the people around them. We will move from Scripture into the experience of the Church in the early days and its expansion into a universal presence within the con-fines of the Old Roman Empire and, eventually, beyond. We will follow the Church into the experience of the rise of cities and reemergence of trade and mercantile life in the West. The series will conclude with an examination of the emergence of Capitalism into the 16th Century and how ideas of social justice adapted to the newer challenges.

1 | WELCOME BACK. I am glad that public worship services have begun again in the region. What we are doing now in the churches might change (i.e. additional Masses)as we go forward. If you do not feel safe coming to church, know that you are not under any obligation from the Church to come. The Church respects your decision not to come. The Church does strongly suggest one wears a mask and that you continue to adhere to safe social distancing of 6 feet in the pews, as well as in any procession at Communion or to and from your car. I appreciate all of your cooperation during this time. I am so glad that so many of you are back.

2, 3 | GRADUATION. The 8th-grade class of St. Cecilia had their graduation online. They also came in a car procession to pick up their diplomas and to get a picture taken in the Our Lady of Fatima Garden. Congratulations and best wishes to all our graduates in the region upon the completion of your studies.

4 | CONGRATULATIONS. On Saturday, May 23, there was a wedding in the region. Please congratulate and pray for the newly married couple from St. Cecilia, Mr. and Mrs. Alex and Claire Bloom.

5, 6 | WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD. Last weekend, two baptisms took place. Please welcome into our Christian community Henry Nelson, son of Christopher and Kara Eisenacher, and also Regina Catherine, daughter of Jason and Holly Hemak.

7 | REST IN PEACE. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Cecilia for Mildred Niehaus. Millie attended the 4PM St. Cecilia Mass every Saturday. Millie will be greatly missed. The funeral mass was held on May 27. Mildred was 94 years old.

Last week I celebrated my 16th anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. I want to thank all those that dropped off cards and all kinds of goodies. I truly appreciated all the well wishes as well all the socially distanced visits. 2

“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” – John 17:17

V ERSE OF THE WEEK

Becoming CatholicCurious about the Church? Want to learn more? Call us today at 513-871-5757, ext. 215.

CATHOLIC FAQS: BLESS ME, FATHER, FOR I HAVE SINNED…If you haven’t gone to confession in a while, NOW is the perfect time to reconcile yourself with God and the Church. In the Eastside Pastoral Region, we offer the sacrament of penance every single day!

Preparation for confession should include an examination of conscience, which means you think back on sins you have committed since your last confession.

What happens during confession depends on the priest and the person. Most people still start with the formula: “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (state the number of months or years) since my last confession.”

If you can’t remember the words or you don’t recall how long it’s been, don’t worry. Just tell the priest it’s been a long time, and he will guide you through the process.

What you will experience is the healing gift of God’s love, the chance to start over with a clean conscience, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude.

God speaks in whispers and we live in a loud world. Hearing God’s voice amidst the noise and busy-ness of our lives can be difficult. But He is always there to guide and help us, and He has given us other people and resources to help us, as well. If you think God may be calling you to religious life and you need someone to talk to, call Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer at 421.3131, ext. 2890.

Visitation GuildSt. Cecilia Parish has formed the Visitation Guild whose mis-sion is to bring Holy Communion to those unable to receive it at church. If you know of any parishioners who are unable to attend Mass and would like to receive Holy Communion, please contact Barbara Browarsky at 871-5757. We will then be able to distribute Communion to you in your home.

Lay Studies at the SeminaryMount Saint Mary’s School of Theology offers lay Catholics the opportunity to grow in faith, knowledge and skills. Weeknight, daytime and Saturday classes in theology, scripture, history and pastoral studies let you maintain family, work and community commitments while answering the call to deeper discipleship. Take a class for credit, audit or work toward a degree or certificate. Interviews by phone or Zoom are available now for fall semester classes. Locations include the main campus in Cincinnati and St. Christopher in Vandalia. Call 513-231-1200 for information or to set up a virtual meeting.

Marriage Annulments The Catholic Church dedicates much time and effort to prepare couples for marriage. However, despite the couples’ best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage.

If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. To learn more about how to get assistance, please contact Joe Fondacaro in our pastoral region at 871-5757, ext. 222, or at [email protected]. All inquiries are kept in strict

confidence.

As you might know, next summer we will celebrate the two centuries of faith since our archdiocese was established on June 19, 1821. In anticipation of the bicentennial, Archbishop Schnurr has written a pasto-ral letter, entitled Radiate Christ, urging each of us to discipleship and to “rediscover the joy of knowing Christ deeply and following Him, thereby becoming a witness to the world.” It is Archbishop Schnurr’s hope that all Catholics of the archdiocese will prayerfully read this letter and engage with its contents, reflecting upon our relationship with the Lord and considering how we can individually and collectively Radiate Christ to all whom we encounter. We encourage everyone to do so. Radiate Christ can be found on The Catholic Telegraph website. It is also in the June edition of The Catholic Telegraph magazine, of which it is the middle eight pages, being delivered to homes this week.
