PRESIDENT’S REPORT We may well remember Season 2016-17 as one of extremes. From the extreme heatwave post Christmas which forced us into the unprecedented actions of cancelling a round of cricket, to the absolute extreme drenching we experienced only a few weeks later that arrived just in time for our season finals campaign.

Mother nature’s challenges were not enough though to stop us completing a very positive and successful season. Tonight and here in our Yearbook we acknowledge and reward the team premiership and individual successes that have been achieved this season. Congratulations to all our award winners.

This season, the PJCA again witnessed growth in our player numbers, with 77 (Saturday) teams and 10 Thunder Girls Cricket League (TGCL) teams registering from U8-U16, across 9 junior clubs. This equated to just under 1000 junior cricketers turning out each week for their club to play some form of junior cricket.

Last season, I called on clubs to think creatively and collectively to identify opportunities for growth. To their credit, they responded with some innovative approaches bringing new players to the game. Some clubs have greatly reduced registration fees, introduced coloured playing uniforms and engaged in the Cricket Australia Milo In2Cricket and T20 Blast programs.

The PJCA have also worked hard to engage and attract more players through some game format modifications and the implementation of a PJCA Milo T20 Blast program during Term 1, 2017. This 4 hub model provided activations throughout the PJCA region including, Cranebrook, St Clair, Glenbrook and Springwood, with each junior club linked to one of the hubs, providing clubs with new player signings. I would like to thank all the club volunteers that supported each hub and especially Jake Balnave, our Cricket NSW Development Manager for his support and work with our Association on this and other initiatives to grow the game in Penrith.

A significant PJCA moment and a shining light in the eyes of Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW was (following our taster in 2015-16) the establishment of our Thunder Girls Cricket League competition. The Spring season of 4 teams grew into 6 Summer season teams with a huge carnival atmosphere experienced each Friday evening at Jamison Park. This provided a new ‘girls only’ pathway into cricket and brought many new girls to the traditional game. Some of these girls also played our Saturday morning competitions as well. To the many volunteers that assisted, my deepest thanks. To David Williams, Girls Cricket Coordinator, the region can not thank you enough for your drive, passion and energy to transform opportunities for girl’s cricket in our district. You are doing an amazing job.

For the record, Season 2016-17 witnessed:

• 750 games of junior cricket being played • 114,257 runs scored • 5724 wickets taken • 36 scores of 100 or more • 13 bowlers took 5 wickets or more in an innings • 4 bowlers took a hat trick

Thank you to the work of our PJCA Vice President and Comp Sec, Alex Fenn for his astute and effective match administration. Thank you also to our Umpires Coordinator, Andrew Kennedy for his appointment and organisation of umpires to our games throughout the season.

Again, the PJCA remains financially stable, thanks to the efforts of our Treasurer, John Jennings and Sponsorship Coordinator, Joanne Agius. Thank you also to all our valued PJCA sponsors for their financial support. Many thanks to our PJCA Secretary, Megan White for all her administrative work that keeps the association ticking along.

We acknowledge the relationships built with our affiliates, the NDCA and Penrith Cricket Club and thank them for their support of junior cricket in Penrith. Thank you also to Penrith City Council for their work in preparing grounds each week as well as support off the field to support our wonderful game.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of our association, I acknowledge every single Club coach, manager, scorer, every Club President, Secretary and committee member and thank them for their time, their effort and their input to ensuring the great game of cricket is accessible to all in our district. Our PJCA Volunteer of the Year Award will again acknowledge the special contribution made by one of our hardest working volunteers.

Congratulations once again to our team and individual winners on your performances and success this season. Enjoy the accolades and keep loving the game we all love!

Another great season of junior cricket has come & gone.

We faced some great opposition teams this year, congratulations to all of those teams and coaches. Our local cricket future certainly looks promising.

Our team, we started and finished the season strong and are very grateful & lucky enough to walk away with a premiership win. A great group of boys and girls that worked as a unit together and also brought their individual flair & skills to make an amazing team. This made coaching and managing these kids a pleasure.

There were a few outstanding individual performances throughout the season but overall a great team effort.

I would like to thank all the parents, grandparents, partners & friends of all the players who supported & helped throughout the season, I could not have done it without you.

Special mention goes to Peter Bulluss and Ray Hudswell, for their help with the team and knowledge they passed on.

Looking forward to another great season.

Under 11 Starc had a cracking season – winning 15 of the 17 rounds played, losing only to Glenmore Park Red. The boys played some very close, tight games against Penrith RSL and Emu Plains and GBCC Smith but managed to come out on top. For many of the boys this is their third season playing together and a couple joined for the first time last season. This year they all hit their straps and were playing well consistently across the team – it was great to hear the chat on the field ‘walking in’, ‘catches win matches’, ‘the stumps are hungry – give them some cherries’.

Unfortunately, we lost Ben early in the season with a broken arm but he returned triumphantly in January. A few games were played with a couple of players short but everyone was on their game on these days.

A huge thank you to our coach Jamie Haldane who continued to lead the boys and wore a rut around the oval in the finals when he couldn’t be on the field. Also, a big thank you to Mandy Williams who is a very committed and organised manager. Mandy always ensures that the team are well informed and on track. Thanks also to all our wonderful parents – they all help out with scoring, coffee runs, BBQ duty and writing our reports.

We are very lucky to have such a great team of boys with such supportive parents and families. We all look forward to every match whether on the field or the sideline - heatwave or rain! Our whole team is a very cohesive bunch both on and off the field. They consistently showed great sportsmanship and support for each other throughout the season. We are all very proud of team Starc.

All the boys have improved enormously and each and every one have played well and most importantly had fun.

We went into the Grand Final having not won a single match against Glenmore Park Red but we’d talked a lot about how we were the team that had the best chance of knocking them off and we knew it could be done. The boys played brilliantly taking the first wicket at 1/0 and then got to 3/20 and wrapped up a rain shortened game of 37 overs with 8/77. An achievable total – and they went after it and achieved it in 31.5 overs losing only 3 wickets along the way. Best stats Ethan not out 26 and Alex 3/5. We certainly all felt that it was the boys best game of the season, a truly deserved win!

Well what can I say, first of all I would like to thank all the parents for committing to the year again, I know it's hard sometimes.

But the rewards at the end of the season are great, as we have won two premierships in two years! The most enjoyable part of this is to see the look on the kids faces … we're got a great bunch of kids in this team that have each other's back no matter what result … win, lose or draw.

Scott and I couldn't be prouder of them and the way they conducted themselves through the year on and off the field. The sky is the limit for this great bunch of kids, let's make it our year again in season 2017/2018!

After such a great season in 2015/16 the boys were keen to do it all again and experience the excitement of going all the way in 2016/17. As they always do they approached their pre-season and training every week with eagerness and a willingness to learn. Their commitment to challenge each other with bat and ball certainly stood them in good stead when it came to performing on the field.

For myself as coach, there is no doubt that one of the most pleasurable things to see from these young men is the encouragement, mateship and trust they show in each other. Most

Page 16: PENRITH JUNIOR CRICKET ASSOCIATION PJCA District... · 2017. 4. 29. · Cover Page: This season’s U16 competition typifies club cricket at it’s best, the same six teams; Glenmore

2016/17 District Yearbook 15

importantly they have a clear respect for their captain while they continue to develop a greater understanding of the strategy of the game.

With regards to individual performances there are so many to name or single out, however the highlight of this team is that every player has worked so hard on their game to take it to the next level and this is demonstrated by 8 players averaging 20+ with the bat and 8 players averaging less than 15 with the ball for the season.

From the very first competition game the boys were quick to show that they had improved their game in all areas, but probably most notable was the tight, line and length bowling supported by relentless pressure fielding. After the 18 competition rounds, the Redbacks were entering the finals series as clear favourites, having not lost a match to this point.

The semi-final would be against Glenbrook Blaxland who we played in last season’s semi. After winning the toss we sent them in, restricting them to 6-93 off 38 overs. After losing an early wicket we steadied the ship and clinically polished off the target in 29 overs at 3-94 to make our way through to the final.

The grand final would again be against Penrith RSL who we defeated in the previous season’s grand final. Unfortunately for both teams, due to the relentless rain all week, the field was not fit for play which is never the way you want to be crowned Premiers. However, in fairness to the Redbacks, we had faced RSL on three separate occasions throughout the season and defeated them in all three matches.

Congratulations Glenmore Park U13 Red on winning the competition two years running and this time as Undefeated Minor Premiers & Premiers, the only junior team in all PJCA competitions to go through the whole season unbeaten!

Starting the season in Division 2, it was looking like it may be a long season! We were a mismatch side with only 7 players for the first 2 games … 1 being a 12 year old … with 4 others in their first year of cricket.

By Game 3, we added another player and our one and only goal was not to forfeit a game. Everyone put in the effort we needed but we simply couldn't compete.

When the team gradings were reviewed, we were put into the 3rd Division and managed to pick up another 12 year old and another 2 players which took us to 11. Finally, we had a full team!

From there things still didn't come easy, however, we were able to compete in games and even managed to jag a few wins.

Surprisingly it looked like an outside chance that we could make the semis. We trained hard but more importantly bonded well together. The one thing that we had in our favour was a

great group of people with no ‘superstars’. Four of the boys had hit a 50 or more through the year and others making 20s and 30s. Come semis and final this proved so valuable. It was a case of a champion team … beating teams of champions.

From the coaching side Ray, Steve and myself couldn't be happier. This team of "rejects" did make it a long season...and we have the trophy to prove it! You all did yourselves proud. Well done!

Congratulations to the boys who after a few years of coming close they finally have a Premiership in their hot little hands!

We started the year off well despite being undermanned due to broken bones, shin splints and other sporting commitments … we only had 11 players on the books and of which we only fielded a full team for two games … the Semi Final and Grand Final.

As far as results were concerned, we won 6, lost 6 and drew (abandoned) 1 … thus we fell into 4th position by 1 point. The Semi Final saw us beat the highly fancied undefeated Cranebrook team and then we went onto beat Colyton-St Clair in the Grand Final, which was a close and competitive game, played in great spirits despite the gloomy weather.

Special thanks to Donna Reardon who managed the side and kept things running smoothly which gave me plenty of time with the boys. Also, to the parents and grandparents who turn up with the boys every week and helped in scoring an umpiring.

I would also like to thank Donna Reardon, Denise Prior, Bern Ball and Gus Prior in running a McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps Day in which over $1000 was raised for Breast Cancer!

Special highlights for the year went to Jed Prior who smashed his first ever hundred finishing on 118 not out, Tate Cranfield scored a 79, Fiddy Aziz scored a 54 and 53 and Oscar Reardon scored a personal best of 46. On the bowling side, we saw James Wakelings’ figures starting to show the potential that we all knew was there with our best taking 13 wickets and Oscar Reardon with the Grand Final winning figures of just 4/6 off 9 overs!

As the coach of these boys for a number of years now, they still impress me with their attitude, competitive spirit and ability but most of all their sense of humour on and off the field make coaching very, very easy.

Once again a big CONGRATULATIONS to the boys on their success this year!!

What a team! These boys never give up and even when they look beaten they refuse to lose.

As defending premier’s, we got a big wakeup call in round 1 with a big loss. Straight away we knew this competition was not going to be easy, and from that moment on the boys were determined, trained hard and really enjoyed their cricket playing as a team. From that point on we only lost one more game and had a tie for the remainder of the regular season.

In the semi-final, the boys bowled and fielded really well taking some great catches and bowling out Glenmore Park for 106. In reply we were in big trouble at 6/53 but the lower order hung around and batted with patience and discipline to end up at 7/89 after 46 overs to put us in front of Glenmore Park at the end of play. What a great team effort, however the celebrations were short lived as we knew we now faced a very strong quality Springwood

Gross team in the Grand Final. We had a loss, and a last ball tie during the regular season against them and the grand final was going to be a massive challenge.

Springwood Gross batted first and at the end of day 1 had batted very well to reach 6/199 and still had 20 minutes to bat the following morning. My boys regrouped in the morning and went out on the field ready to go and took the last 4 wickets quickly restricting Gross to 210.

It was always going to be tough to chase 210 in a Grand Final but all our batsmen played their role and they played aggressive cricket and batted for the team. We reached 6/161 with 45 minutes play remaining a victory looked out of reach. However, the belief in the team was amazing and they didn’t give up and passed the total with 15 minutes to spare, 6 wickets down … a great win from a champion team. It was a magnificent Grand Final between two teams from the same club, and a lot of credit goes to the Gross boys, they are an outstanding team.

A massive thank you to not only the boy’s parents, but their whole families! Throughout the season we had grandparents, brothers, sisters and cousins supporting the boys. Also, I am very lucky to have an outstanding Team Manager Glenn Jackson and an Official Scorer Greg Schultz Senior (the best scorer in the competition). Thank you both for your support and knowledge, you’re both very much a part of the team’s success.

Congratulations again boys!!

Having been around for so long I knew this season would be the toughest yet. Given it’s the age where players have more school work, get jobs, girlfriends and some considered for grade cricket. Having 5 involved in grade certainly proved to be the biggest challenge of the season. I would like to commend the boys and their parents for the dedication to training and games by turning up each week. I was blessed to have so much talent and commitment in one team. My love for cricket was greater due to the wonderful attitude this team had towards the game as well as the respect they showed me as a coach. I always felt like one the boys.

We started the season as favourites, due to winning the previous two years and the boys never looked uncomfortable with the pressure.

We went through the whole competition only losing twice to last years finalists and nemesis St Clair, who also only lost two games. The difference was our first ever outright victory in Round 6, keeping us 4 points clear and giving us the Minor Premiership.

I am so proud of these young men for the way they always played the game. They showed respect to the opposition but played hard. Most of all, it was how they looked after their teammates, always encouraging and keen to help with tips at training. They all stood up and took ownership of the team with a large leadership group on game days. It was great to see them thinking about how to get certain batsmen out or how they built partnerships whilst batting. It took until the 3rd round before we lost a wicket and on 5 occasions we had 100 run opening stands with 2 being double hundreds. Our bowling attack was endless and the fielding backed it up on most occasions.

Congratulations to the boys for going out of juniors in the best way possible. Some people go through their whole sporting life not making a grand final let alone winning 4!! It's a remarkable achievement and I'm so grateful to have been a part of it. I must also congratulate the parents on their dedication to their children. Huge thanks to Greg and Cathy for managing the team over the last 3 seasons. Thanks to all the parents that scored and helped put boundaries out or dragging the drinks esky onto the field. A massive thank you to Matt, Melinda and Bill for the numerous BBQs had over the years. There has been so many people that have played a role in the team’s success since U8’s including Jeff who coached the first 2 years. Well done to Tom and Nick who played in the first and last game together and it was very fitting that they should be batting and getting the winning runs together in the U16 s GF.

I have enjoyed every minute as a coach in GPCC over 13 years and the friendships I have made right across the association and am happy to call all of the players a mate.

A few stats from our 6 years of competition:

Matches 93 Minor premierships 4 Premierships 4 including the “3peat” (2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17) Runs for 10,638 Runs against 8228 Wickets taken 671 Wickets lost 442 Catches 289 Run outs 165 Stumpings 8 Hair loss ALL Although I have finished being their coach I will still be watching their progression into the senior ranks and even hope to play some games with a few of them. Good luck for the future boys and please remember to keep enjoying the best game in the world. GO THE REDBACKS!!!!!!!!

THUNDER GIRLS CRICKET LEAGUE

At PJCA this season, we have taken our female cricket options and development to a new level … and its been a massive year! On the back of the success on the WBBL, we have had the opportunity of growing all levels of girl’s cricket from the representative program to the introduction of our new Thunder Girls Cricket League, an all girl U13 competition.

On the TGCL front, we introduced this competition with a Spring season that consisted of four sides and we have grown this to six sides for our Summer competition. Whilst there are a small proportion of girls that are playing in both these competitions as well as our mainstream Saturday morning competitions, the majority of girls involved are new to our game... and more importantly, would never have played cricket if it wasn't for the all-female option. In this regard, the PJCA is leading the way and is considered somewhat of a poster child by Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia for the promotion and development of female cricket.

With regards to the actual two competitions, we congratulate our premiers:

• St Clair Hawks for winning the Spring Competition

• Springwood for winning the Summer Competition

As in past years, absolutely none of the above opportunities for junior girls would be possible without the support of the PJCA Management Committee and the PJCA Reps Committee. Thank you to all involved, particularly PJCA President Geoff Sullivan, PJCA Development Coordinator Brendan Bayliss, and Joanne Agius and Michelle Pollard who coordinate our sponsors and keep us all looking spic and span!

A massive thank you also to all the club based volunteers that assisted throughout the TGCL seasons, be it as team managers, scorers, game organisers, BBQ helpers and anything else that needed to be done … your work and support was awesome!

Girls cricket is on the up with the support of all of you. THANK YOU!!

David Williams

Girls Cricket Coordinator

Editors Note: David Williams is to be congratulated and thanked for his passionate and relentless efforts in coordinating our girls cricket development within the PJCA. Deservingly, this season, David is awarded our annual PJCA Volunteer of the Year Award. Well done David!!
