he vast majority ofstreams, rivers and wetlands

interspersed throughout thelandscape of Pennsylvania

originate within the borders of theCommonwealth. Stress from humanactivities has had an adverse effect onthe ecological integrity of these fragilesystems and this stress continues toincrease due to land conversions, poorland use practices, direct and indirectphysical alteration of the area’s riversand streams and the destruction ofwetlands. Fifty-six percent of the original wetland base in Pennsylvania has been lost over the last two cen-turies. The loss and deteriorationofcritical habitats have diminished theCommonwealth’s wetland-dependent

wildlife and degraded water quality forlocal human and wildlife populations.

Ducks Unlimited’s experienced staffof biologists and engineers takes alandscape-level approach to wetlandrestoration. Science-based planningtools and cutting-edge research areguiding our restoration activitiesthroughout the Commonwealth toprovide the highest level of waterfowlbenefit for our investment.

As a result of our conservation efforts,Pennsylvania hunters and natureenthusiasts can take pleasure in thebreeding and migrating waterfowlacross the Keystone State.

Funds raised will be invested in Ducks Unlimited programs

that protect and restore the most critical waterfowl habitats

in Pennsylvania.Your donated funds give us powerful leverage

(as much as 5:1) to secure dollars available from state and

federal agencies, thus making your donation go even further!

Ducks Unlimited (DU) is involved in ahistoric effort to restore Pennsylvania’swetlands and improve waterfowl pro-duction. In the past 20 years, DU, itsconservation partners and supporterslike you have restored thousands ofacres of wetlands and more than 100 miles of riparian buffers. DucksUnlimited is committed to continuedhabitat conservation in Pennsylvaniaand we hope you are too!

Pennsylvania is important in the production of local mallards, woodducks and American black ducks, aswell as providing important stopoverareas for migrating waterfowl, shore-birds and other birds.

HABITAT CONSERVATIONThe Lower Susquehanna and Delaware Bay watersheds drain over 17,500 squaremiles, nearly 40 percent of the state. These regions provide significant migration andwintering habitat for American black ducks, mallards, canvasbacks, tundra swans andCanada geese in the Atlantic Flyway. Significant nesting waterfowl include mallards, wood ducks, American black ducks and Canada geese.

Habitat conservation for the direct benefit of waterfowl is the main focus. However,Ducks Unlimited recognizes that one way to improve habitat conditions for water-fowl populations, the other 2,600 wildlife species and people that live in the region, isto improve water quality.

HABITAT CONSERVATION

P R I O R I T Y A R E A S

A Strategic ApproachPriority areas are science-based and illustrate the areas where

wetlands and associated upland habitats can be of the most benefit

to waterfowl and have the greatest impact on water quality.

Pennsylvania Priority Areas

Lower Susquehanna Delaware Bay DU project points (Project points may represent more than one project.)

Page 5: Pennsylvania - Ducks

Lower SusquehannaPriority AreaThe freshwater marshes of the SusquehannaRiver watershed support nesting bald eagles, wood ducks, mallards and American blackducks, and are important to wintering andmigrating greater snow geese, Canada geese, tundra swans and American black ducks. The watershed also supports breeding mal-lards and wood ducks.

DU’s goals in this watershed will includerestoring marginally wet pastures anduplands for breeding and spring staging, promoting riparian buffer restoration andimproving water quality in the ChesapeakeBay.

Delaware BayPriority AreaMigratory waterfowl and birds along theAtlantic Flyway rely on the freshwater wetlands and uplands throughout theDelaware Bay watershed. Developmentand intensive farming in Pennsylvania, andother land use conversions, have degradedthese wetlands, deteriorating water qualityin the bay and affecting wildlife andhumans.

DU’s goals in this watershed includerestoring inland and coastal wetlands, uplands and riparian buffers to providehabitat for wintering, spring staging andbreeding, and improving water quality inthe Delaware Bay.
