10:15am - 11:30am Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: Nitrogen Reduction

Dr. John Buchanan, University of Tennessee

When we breathe approximately 78% of the air we inhale is nitrogen gas. With this much nitrogen around us, it is sometimes hard to believe that there is so much concern about nitrogen from onsite wastewater treatment systems. However, the nitrogen that we produce during wastewater treatment is in the form of nitrate. This nitrogen form is a plant available nutrient and when excessive nitrate is available, then there will be excessive plant growth. Of primary concern is the overgrowth of aquatic plants and algae that can destroy the ecological balance of a waterbody. Because of these concerns, some jurisdictions are demanding that onsite wastewater systems that serve shoreline properties do more to convert nitrate back to nitrogen gas – the process of denitrification. This session will focus on the denitrification process and the issues associated with applying this technology to onsite wastewater treatment systems.

Choice B: Septic DetectiveJeff Rachlin, OnSite Management Inc.

Do you want to be a septic sleuth? Participants of this interactive breakout session will have the chance to put their inspector skills to the test. Real-world issues that inspectors face in the field will be presented to attendees who in turn will try to recognize the problem, identify the cause, and develop a potential solution. New and seasoned inspectors will benefit from the discussion of how best to discover concerns with onsite systems.

Choice C: Managing Your Business’ Online PresenceShawn Lutzko, Lutzko Marketing

12:45pm - 2:00pm Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: Sub-Surface Drip Dispersal

Dr. John Buchanan, University of Tennessee

We depend on the soil to provide wastewater treatment. When working with shallow soils, we need to use wastewater application methods that can take full advantage of the limited resource. Subsurface drip dispersal systems ensure that the whole distribution area receives uniform doses and can maintain aerobic conditions within the soil. However, in order to accomplish this, drip systems must be based on good design, installed with care, and maintained by professionals. This session will focus on the critical design parameters that must be understood when installing a drip dispersal system.

Choice B: Inspecting During Weather IssuesTom Trimmer, Trimmer Home Inspection

How do various weather issues impact your ability to perform a proper inspection of a septic system? Do they have any impact at all? Are some systems more prone to weather issues than others? Attendees will learn how to deal with dry conditions, rainy conditions, snowy & icy conditions during system inspections while ensuring they reach accurate conclusions.

Choice C: 12:45pm-3:45pm

Small Business HR Skills WorkshopSamm Smeltzer & MaryRose Ritter, HRart Services

HR is a word used to generally describe the management of people. But what does this necessary function of business actually do? Your small business needs to be ready when it comes to hiring, firing and everything in between. In this 3-hour workshop, your office staff will be given the knowledge to develop a solid foundation in Human Resources. At the end of this workshop, you will have an understanding of how Employment Law, HR functions and HR Policy impact your role as an organizational leader as well as your organization’s resilience. Topics covered include the legal minefield of HR management, understanding common organizational HR policies & procedures, and, best practices for documenting HR actions.

2:30pm - 3:45pm Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: Pumps & Controls

Dr. John Buchanan, University of Tennessee

There are many applications for pumps in onsite wastewater treatment system design. This session will cover the basic hydraulic principles that must be used in the selection of pumps and controls. We will cover the fundamental details on the design, the component selection and the configuration of pumping systems that will deliver septic tank effluent to a pretreatment component or to a soil treatment system.

Choice B: Dealing with Second Opinions on System InspectionsFrank Parker, Parker Wastewater Consulting

When a property owner isn’t satisfied with the results of a septic system inspection, they may seek a second opinion on the conclusions reached in an inspection report. This session will review common scenarios that prompt the request for a second opinion. Attendees will learn how to respond professionally when dealing with the various parties to an inspection including the seller, the buyer, the real estate agents, and the other inspector. The presentation will cover the topic from the perspective of the inspector asked to deliver a second opinion as well as the inspector who is having their report questioned. The implications of second opinions and how they relate to the property will be discussed.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, 20208:30am - 4:00pm Confined Space Training

TBA

This one-day program is designed to train the entrant, attendant and entry supervisor in their roles as described in 29 CFR 1910.146. Topics to be covered are hazard assessments, atmospheric monitoring, PPE, permit building, ventilation, non entry rescue and reclassification from permit to non-permit, equipment review and hands-on training with equipment. The program includes classroom work and hands-on application. A written exam is administered and reviewed.

8:30am - 9:45am Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: Flow Equalization

Dr. John Buchanan, University of Tennessee

Most of us were raised to eat three meals per day – breakfast, lunch, and supper. We eat until our appetite is satisfied (then eat a little more), we feel full of a couple of hours, and then we start to desire the next meal. How would our bodies respond if we got fed a spoonful of food every five minutes? This would be about 192 spoonfuls during the typical 18 hours per day that we are awake and would be the same amount of food as we had with the three meals. Would our bodies process the food the same way it did with three big meals – probably not. Wastewater treatment systems are the same way – they work better when they are spoon-fed. Unfortunately, wastewater from a home tends to come in large but infrequent doses – typically during the morning and again in the evening. By using flow equalization techniques, we can absorb the large inflow doses and create the near-continuous, low-rate movement of wastewater into the system. Our focus for this session is to design a system that will equalize the source inflow and provide an equalized flow into a downstream component in order to improve its performance.

Choice B: Maintaining a Residential JET BAT Media PlantEd Schloss, JET Systems

The importance of maintaining all components of an onlot sewage disposal system cannot be overemphasized. This session will focus on system operation and maintenance for a residential JET BAT Media plant. The presentation will briefly summarize the basic components and operation of the media plant and will then focus on detailed maintenance activities that are specific to the JET BAT plant.

Choice C: Spotted Lanternfly Permit Requirements for Your BusinessPA Dept. of Agriculture

In Pennsylvania, a Spotted Lanternfly Permit is now required for businesses located or working within the quarantine zone, which move company vehicles within or out of the quarantine. If your business operates a company vehicle in any of the 14 quarantined counties (ranging from south central PA to north east PA), your office staff should attend this session to learn more about the permit program. This presentation will cover the permit requirements, guidance on achieving compliance, and steps your business can take to obtain a permit.

10:15am - 11:30am Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: Pharmaceuticals in Wastewater

Dr. John Buchanan, University of Tennessee

Recently the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a ban on certain over-the-counter consumer antiseptic wash products that contain triclosan, the active ingredient in most antibacterial soaps. Effective September 6, 2017, this ban also includes 18 other chemicals found in hand and body washes. The concern is two-fold: there is strong concern that the overuse of antibiotics will generate new antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, and there little understanding about triclosan’s fate in wastewater treatment systems. However, triclosan is not the only product of concern - if you are on a medication, so is your septic system. Oral medications

Page 7: Pennsylvania Decentralized Wastewater Conference … › events › 20 › PSMA_Attendee_Conference...Pennsylvania Decentralized Wastewater Conference and Trade Show January 27-28,

have to be digested before the active ingredients can enter the bloodstream and be transported within the body. For many medications, only 20% of the active ingredient provides a clinical benefit (clearing a sinus infection or providing pain relief) while the remainder is metabolized and excreted from the body – mostly in the urine. This presentation will focus on pharmaceuticals and personal care products that enter septic systems and investigate the difficulties of removing these compounds out of the water.

Choice B: Advantex Treatment System Maintenance ProvisionsReed Johnson, Orenco Systems, Inc.

The importance of system maintenance cannot be overstated and is the key to long term functioning. Acknowledging the fact that all systems and all system components require maintenance, this session on operation and maintenance will focus on the Orenco Advantex Treatment System. The presentation will briefly summarize the Advantex treatment system, how it works, and the current maintenance measures required in Pennsylvania by the system’s alternate listing. The session will then focus on more detailed maintenance activities that are specific to the Advantex system.

Choice C: The Efficient Exit: Leaving Your Business on Your TermsRhodes Wilson, ARW Wealth Management

Having built your business over decades, the idea of how to exit can be daunting. In this session we will explore both the pragmatic – sales price, terms, structure, when, etc. – and the philosophical – what comes after my exit? Topics of discussion include: What do you need financially to exit your business versus, what do you want? When do you see yourself selling: sooner, later, never? Identify potential paths to exit. Action steps to enhance the value of the business prior to the sale. How to structure the sale to get the maximum value from a transfer and how “Less can be More!” Strategies to get more for you the seller while making the buyer’s payments lower. How to make the funds both provide for you but become a legacy going forward.

12:45pm - 2:00pm Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: High Strength Wastewater

Dr. John Buchanan, University of Tennessee

Household water conservation devices do a good job of reducing water consumption. However, if the waste load remains the same then the waste products become more concentrated. The result is often high strength wastewater. When the concentration of waste constituents (BOD, TSS, fats and oils) is greater than the typical values used for a conventional system layout, then design modifications are needed to account for the extra waste load that has to be renovated by the soil. This session will define high strength wastewater and provide design guidance on how to provide onsite treatment.

Choice B: PercRite Drip Dispersal Operation & MaintenanceMeghan Andress, PreDoC, Inc.

The importance of system maintenance cannot be overstated and is the key to long term system functioning. The need for system maintenance, meaning maintenance beyond pumping, is not unique to alternate systems but should be performed on all types of onlot sewage treatment and dispersal systems. This session on system operation and maintenance will focus on the PercRite drip systems, both the drip systems and the Micromound systems. The presentation will briefly summarize PercRite drip systems describing their basic components and how/when they are used in Pennsylvania, as well as the current maintenance required in Pennsylvania by the respective system’s alternate listing. The session will then focus on detailed maintenance activities that are specific to the PercRite drip systems.

Choice C: OSHA Safety Review for Your BusinessDaniel Larson, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

IUP’s Safety Sciences Department is the officially designated agency in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for OSHA consultation services. Since 1983, IUP OSHA Consultation Program provides FREE occupational and health consultative services made available through federal regulations. The program is designed to assist private-sector employers in the Commonwealth in understanding and voluntarily complying with applicable safety/health regulations enforced by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This presentation will explain to your office staff how employers can access these resources and receive no-cost assistance on how to better recognize and deal with workplace hazards and improve your business’ safety and health programs.

2:30pm - 3:45pm Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: Greywater Reuse: Benefits, Risks and Responsibilities

Dr. John Buchanan, University of Tennessee

In the past 10 years, nearly all parts of the U.S. have experienced extended periods of water scarcity. Wastewater reuse becomes a common discussion topic during droughts and this water is certainly an underutilized resource. On the residential level, there are people who want to improve their water-use efficiency by using greywater for activities that do not require potable water. There are benefits and risks to this approach. A benefit is a lower water bill and a risk is the potential for disease transmission. However, there is also new responsibility. Traditional residential septic systems have removed most of the responsibility from the homeowner with regard to wastewater management – “flush it, forget it, and have the septic tank pumped every seven years.” Having a greywater system means that the homeowner will have to manage the water that goes into the greywater system and ensure that the greywater usage poses a very minimum risk. This presentation will discuss some of the benefits of greywater reuse and the potential risks. This talk will focus on the implications on the septic system that serves a home with a greywater reuse system.

Choice B: Inspectors’ RoundtablePanel

The panel of PSMA trainers will discuss how inspectors can identify common issues with onsite wastewater systems. Both newly certified and veteran inspectors will benefit by exploring real-life inspection issues with the panelists. Learn how they resolved some of the tough cases…come and share your experiences & bring your questions.

Choice C: Identifying & Dealing with BiomatsJoe Valentine, Quality Septic Inspections

A biomat is a layer of partially decomposed organic waste often found on the bottom and sides of an absorption area’s trenches. This presentation will address issues associated with the development of biomats including how and why they form as well as how to recognize their presence during a septic system inspection. If a biomat is identified, attendees will learn what can be done to remove it and what can be done to prevent them from forming.
