Penn coach Brad Harper led the Kingsmen to the school’s first wrestling team state championship in 2015.

A four-time state qualifier in wrestling for Mishawaka High School, Harper won a state championship, and was also a state runner-up for the Cavemen.

Harper was also a two-time NCAA qualifier for the Purdue Boilermakers.

Coach Harper is in his 11th season at Penn. He has coached Penn to one state title, two semi-state titles, eight regional titles, and eight sectional titles.

Penn turns back Mishawaka in a classic By Tim Creason/South Bend Tribune MISHAWAKA – Penn is still the big dog of northern Indiana wrestling. But the Kingsmen may be hearing footsteps coming fast in the distance. Adam Berta’s 52-second fall in the 220-pound weight class guaranteed Penn a victory

over Mishawaka in their annual Northern Indiana Conference showdown Wednesday at the Kingsman gym.

But there was nothing easy about Penn’s 38-33 victory. Not this time. This was a classic Caveman-Kingsman donnybrook.

Exactly halfway through the match, Penn’s lead was only 19-18. Even after the outcome was mathematically certain, the Cavemen finished off the contest with two falls.

“My hat’s off to that Mishawaka team,” said Penn coach Brad Harper. “Man, they’ve got the energy back. Coach Steven Sandefer has got them going.”

Penn (2-0) collected victories in eight individual bouts, while Mishawaka (10-4) had six. Each team won four matches by fall.

If there was a turning point, it happened in the 160-pound weight class, where Penn’s Colin Wilson rallied from a 3-0 deficit to pin Ben Kensinger in 5:45. That turned a one-point team score into a seven point lead for the Kingsmen.

“He (Wilson) is kind of my sleeper,” said Harper. “This is the first season he has wrestled varsity. But he’s a senior and it was only a one-point match at that point. We told him he had to step up, and he did.”

Wilson was trailing 4-2 with 20 seconds remaining in the third period when he got the takedown and rolled his opponent for a fall.

“I haven’t wrestled (Kensinger) before, so I had to feel him out a little bit,” said Wilson. “I didn’t really have a strategy at the end, I just knew I couldn’t let him get on top of me.”

Mishawaka’s only lead came in the first match on the night, as Brendon Mark took advantage of a stalling call to tie Penn’s Evan Light with one second left in regulation. Then, he pinned Light 37 seconds into overtime.

Penn’s Vince Sparrow and Tanner DeMien each won by fall at 120 and 126, pushing Penn into a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

It was 19-6 in Penn’s favor after the 138 class, but Mishawaka’s Jacob LaPlace won on an injury default and Joe Walker’s power-half pinned Penn’s Austin Heater at 152, making the scoreboard 19-18.

Wilson’s win at 160, and Noah Brown’s 13-8 win over Mishawaka’s Colin Fee at 170 pushed the Kingsmen into firm control.

Mishawaka heavyweight Alex Faulkner and 106-pounder Andrew Sinkovics won by fall in the final two individual bouts.

Jimtown's Hunter Watts wins showdown match at

wrestling invitational

By Tim Creason/South Bend Tribune MISHAWAKA – You could say Hunter Watts likes to give Jimtown High School’s

wrestling fans their money’s worth. Or maybe he’s trying to give them heart attacks. It’s hard to tell. Watts did it again Saturday during the finals of the Al Smith wrestling invitational. The

Jimmie junior scored a desperation takedown with less than one second remaining to tie up his 120-pound championship match against Hobart’s Tylor Triana.

Then, just 12 seconds into overtime, Watts scored on a quick steparound takedown, pushing the previously undefeated Triana face-first to the mat for a 7-5 victory.

“I just knew I had to score points, because I was down,” said Watts, describing his miraculous finish in regulation. “I had no idea it was that close to the end. I was just trying to do anything to take him down.”

As with pretty much every title bout in the huge meet at Mishawaka, the 120-pound final was a showdown between two of Indiana’s best wrestlers.

Last year, Triana, a senior, finished third at state in the 120-pound class. Watts was state runnerup at 113.

But those kind of matchups have come to be expected at Al Smith, where seven of the Indiana’s Top-20 ranked teams were part of the 32-team field.

No. 2-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral, making its first appearance at the tournament, claimed the team title with 233 points, holding off a solid Chesterton team (211 ½). The Irish and Trojans each claimed three individual champs.

Meanwhile, it was not a good tournament for local squads. Watts was the only area champ, and only one other – Elkhart Memorial’s Christian Mejia – even made the finals. Mejia was second in the 126-pound weight class.

Penn and Mishawaka were the only area teams to finish among the top 10, with the Kingsmen scoring 139 ½ points for sixth and the Cavemen totaling 132 for seventh.

Mishawaka, at least, had four third-place individual finishers, while Penn had two. “We’ve got some work to do,” said Penn coach Brad Harper. “We’ve got to learn to

finish. We were in a lot of close matches, but we have to finish a little bit harder and win the small battles.”

South Bend wrestlers were almost shut out, with only one finishing among the top six in any weight class. Jonathan Thomas of Adams finished fifth at 195, and takes a 22-3 record into the New Year.

For the wrestlers from Mishawaka and Penn, the meet was a learning experience.

“You can’t underestimate anyone, you have to keep working hard, no matter who it is,” said Mishawaka senior Alex Faulkner, who finished third at heavyweight.

“I was a little nervous,” said Faulkner of wrestling before a gym almost filled to capacity. “I probably need to go on offense more and keep attacking.”

Penn senior Max Chaffee, who is still getting into wrestling shape after coming over from the football team, noted that nobody is ever happy finishing third. He did that in the 182-pound class.

“It makes you realize you have to get better,” said Chaffee. “It’s better to wake up now and fix things now than try to do it later.”

Mishawaka’s third place finishers included Andrew Sinkovics at 106, Jacob Laplace at 145, Joe Walker at 152, and Faulkner. Penn’s third-place finishers were Chaffee and Tanner Demien at 126.

Jimtown’s Matt Gimson was third at 132. Mejia (22-1) suffered his first loss of the season in the 126-pound finale, and

immediately pointed the finger at himself. He dropped at 6-3 decision to Cayden Rooks of Columbus East, the defending state champ at 120.

“I just felt slow,” said Mejia. “I lost the match, I really don’t feel like he (Rooks) won the match. I hope I see him again.”

Six Penn wrestlers rack up pins in 53-20 victory against

Elkhart Central Six Penn wrestlers posted pins as the Kingsmen defeated Elkhart Central, 53-20, on

Thursday, Jan. 4, to stay undefeated in Northern Indiana Conference dual meets. Tanner DeMien struck for a pin in 1:35 in the 126-weight class. Logan Hill only needed 1:26 to pin his opponent at 132. Preston Risner dominated for a pin in 4:00 at 138. Austin Heater pulled off a pin in 5:54 at 152. Max Chaffee scored a lightning-quick pin in :38 at 182. Adam Berta earned a pin at 220. Ryan Varner won by forfeit at 170. Evan Light (113) won a 9-3 decision. Vince Sparrow (120) won by technical fall. Jeffrey Harper (145) won an 8-5 decision.

Another Penn takedown in NIC

By Tim Creason/South Bend Tribune MISHAWAKA — The University of Miami football team hangs a “turnover chain” around

the necks of defensive players when they recover a fumble or make an interception. At Jimtown High School, wrestlers get a “pin chain” to wear after they collect a fall. Sure, it’s kind of funny-looking — a big “J” at the bottom of a big chain — but it’s hard not

to notice when a guy is wearing it around. And that’s the idea. “It’s a motivational thing,” laughed Jimmie junior Matt Gimson, who was proudly showing

off the necklace after he pinned Mishawaka’s Gabriel Weeks for the 132-pound weight class championship during Saturday’s Northern Indiana Conference wrestling championships.

“It’s just for fun,” said Gimson. “But everybody wants to wear it.” Jimtown finished third in the final team standings, as the outstanding mat trio of Gimson

(132), his brother Conner (138), and 120-pound Hunter Watts — all juniors — tried to make certain this season’s league tournament would not be an all-Penn and Mishawaka affair.

But even with three champs, the Jimmies couldn’t halt the Kingsmen and Cavemen from dominating the event, as they have for years. Make that decades.

Penn collected its eighth consecutive conference championship — Mishawaka won the 10 before that — and the only real surprise was the margin of the Kingsman victory.

It was supposed to be close, but it never really was, as Penn collected six individual champs and scored 292 points for the win. Mishawaka had three champs and scored 219 ½.

“I’ve invented a new word. It’s ‘maxeffort,’ said Penn coach Brad Harper. “There’s no space between ‘max’ and ‘effort.’ That’s our theme for the rest of the season and that’s what we were showing today.”

There was a Penn or Mishawaka wrestler in every weight class finale. Perhaps a little surprisingly, Penn dominated the upper weights, sweeping every

individual title between the 160 and 220-pound weight classes. That included a victory for unseeded Michael Garcia, normally a member of the

Kingsman junior varsity, who was tossed into the lineup when Penn’s regular 160-pounder fell ill.

In his first match, Garcia upset No. 1-seed David Sheley of Riley, 9-7, and then pinned Washington’s Donya Harris in the semifinals. His championship came with a rough 5-2 decision over New Prairie’s Austin Lesniak.

“I believed I could do it, but I didn’t really know,” said Garcia, who will have to wait and see if he is in the Kingsman lineup for the sectional. “This is a great feeling.”

“How about that?” beamed Harper. “That’s what I mean by maxeffort.” Penn’s other champs included Tanner DeMien (126), Noah Brown (170), Max Chaffee

(182), Rockne Hurley (195) and Adam Berta (220). Mishawaka’s champs were Andrew Sinkovics (106), Brendon Mark (113) and Jacob

LaPlace (145). The Caveman who made the biggest impression, however, was senior Alex Faulkner,

who was less than a second from upsetting undefeated Isaiah McWilliams of Washington, the defending state runner-up, in the heavyweight finale.

Trailing 2-1 with less than 30 seconds remaining, Faulkner scored a rare takedown on McWilliams to take a 3-2 lead. With the clock running down, McWilliams slipped free and recorded a reversal less than a second before the final buzzer sounded, pulling out a 4-3 victory.

McWilliams is 35-0 this season. Elkhart Central’s Xavier Stroud won the 152-pound title as the only other non-Penn or

Mishawaka champ. Stroud beat Mishawaka’s Joe Walker, 8-7, in a brutal final. “That was really tough,” said Stroud. “But matches like that make you better.” Despite the final margin, Mishawaka’s LaPlace — a state medal-winner last year — said

the Cavemen won’t give up on their goal of a sectional championship in two weeks. “You just have to keep working hard,” said LaPlace. “This is just a step along the way.” At Mishawaka TEAM SCORES: Penn 292, Mishawaka 219 ½, Jimtown 184, New Prairie 158 ½,

Upper weights carry Kingsmen to crown By Tim Creason/South Bend Tribune MISHAWAKA — Like a pair of heavyweight boxers, Mishawaka and Penn exchanged

body blows during Saturday’s IHSAA wrestling sectional. But unlike other tournaments of recent years, this one went the full 14 rounds. Rockne Hurley’s titanic fall over Garrett Sandefur in the 195-pound weight class gave

Penn just enough momentum to claim its eighth consecutive sectional team title at Mishawaka’s gym.

Victories in two of the final three weight classes gave Penn a total of 295 points, turning back Mishawaka’s 268 and allowing Kingsman coach Brad Harper to breathe a huge sigh of relief.

“I knew it was going to be a tight match,” said Harper, who was sweating bullets a few minutes earlier. “We needed a lot of support from our upper weights.”

Nobody else in the eight-team field was close. Riley was over a hundred points back in third.

The Cavemen pushed 10 wrestlers into the championship round; the Kingsmen had 11. Halfway through the finals, Mishawaka led Penn by a half point, 248 ½ to 248. With

three matches to go, the score was tied, 268-268. That’s when Hurley and Sandefur stepped on the mat for the Match of the Year, with a

team title on the line.

Hurley, a junior with a 22-4 season record, was seeded No. 1 at 195, but he quickly ran into trouble against Mishawaka’s talented Sandefur (14-4), a freshman who missed part of the season due to injury.

Working for a first period takedown, Hurley was caught in a headlock and went straight to his back. Sandefur switched to a fireman’s and bore down for a fall, but couldn’t get it.

“As soon as he whipped me over, I thought, ‘Oh, God, what did I just do,’” said Hurley. “I was trying so hard not to get pinned.”

The end of the period allowed Hurley to escape, and then a thrower’s duel ensued, with the two wrestlers tossing each other around the mat while an excited crowd of spectators went crazy.

Sandefur led 8-7 with a minute remaining, before Hurley caught a wing and turned the Caveman frosh for a fall in 5:33.

“I knew he (Sandefur) is a thrower and strong and I would have to throw him right back,” said Hurley. “It really doesn’t bother me to get into matches like that.”

Hurley’s win was Penn’s big break, and junior Adam Berta stuck Saint Joseph’s Casey Conery at 220 to mathematically eliminate the Cavemen.

Penn’s other champs included Vince Sparrow at 120, Tanner DeMien at 126, Noah Brown at 170, Max Chaffee at 182 and 132-pound Preston Risner, who claimed his 100th career victory with a 6-5 decision over Mishawaka’s Drew Mason in the 138-pound finale.

Mishawaka’s champs were Andrew Sinkovics at 106, Brendon Mark at 113, Gabriel Weeks at 132, Jacob LaPlace at 145, Joseph Walker at 152 and Ben Kensinger at 160.

Washington heavyweight Isaiah McWilliams pushed his season record to 38-0 with a win over Mishawaka’s Alex Faulkner at heavyweight. Otherwise, every individual champ was from either Penn or Mishawaka.

Mishawaka’s Kensinger scored two escapes and a third-period takedown to beat Riley’s David Sheley, 4-2, in the 160-pound finale.

“I went through a rough patch earlier this season, but I think I’ve worked that out,” said Kensinger (22-9). “I have a lot of confidence heading to the regional.”

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to next Saturday’s new regional tournament at Penn.

That’s the crazy thing, the two teams do it all over again in a week. Mishawaka coach Steve Sandefer says the Cavemen will be ready. “We just have to be better wrestlers,” said Sandefer. “We came here today to get the win

and we didn’t get it. We’ll try again next week.” Penn will be seeking its eighth consecutive regional title, and Harper said his wrestlers

will take nothing for granted. “It’s going to be a challenge,” said Harper. “Steven Sandefer is doing an amazing job at

Penn steamrolls wrestling regional field

MISHAWAKA — Preston Risner, where have you been? Well, he’s been there all along, an integral part of Penn High School’s wrestling

team, with 103 career wins to his credit. But even he will tell you he hasn’t looked the way he’s looking right now. “I’ve been pushing it in the practice room. That’s all it comes down to,” said Risner,

who knocked off previously undefeated Adam Davis of Culver Academies to win the 138-pound weight class during Saturday’s wrestling regional at Penn.

Two third-period takedowns enabled the Penn senior to come from behind and knock off Davis, who is Indiana’s No. 13-ranked 138-pounder. Risner improved to 29-8, while Davis is 35-1.

“I could feel him starting to break in the second period,” said Risner. “I had to show him that I was not tired and I was going to win this. It was so important for me, especially with this being the last time I’ll wrestle in this (Penn Palace).”

In the process, Risner helped turn a rolling snowball into an avalanche, as Penn steamrolled a 16-team field for its eighth consecutive regional team title.

The Kingsmen finished with seven individual champs and 184 points, while Mishawaka took runner-up honors at 145 1/2. The Cavemen had two champs.

A much-anticipated challenge from Wawasee was there through the opening round, and then it wasn’t, as the Warriors suffered through a rough semifinal. They finished third with 119 points and one champ.

Penn advances 11 wrestlers to next week’s IHSAA semistate tournament at East Chicago. The top four finishers in each weight class get to go.

Mishawaka is sending nine, while Plymouth qualified six, including two champs. Penn emerged from the semifinals with a 22-1/2 point lead, and the avalanche

started quickly, as Evan Light defeated Riley’s Trevor Penrod, 4-2, for the 113-pound championship.

Considering Light didn’t win a sectional title, it was a huge boost for the Kingsmen. “You know, when I have fun, I usually win,” said Light. “At the conference and the

sectional, I was all stressed out and concerned about winning and doing things 100 percent right, and it didn’t work out. Today, I enjoyed the moment, I didn’t put all the pressure on myself, and look what happened. I just had fun.”

Vince Sparrow, who entered the tourney with a 22-12 record, was a surprise winner for Penn at 120. And when Tanner DeMien upset Wawasee’s No. 9-ranked Braxton Alexander, the defending regional champion, at 126, it was clear the Kingsmen were on their way to a big victory.

Penn’s other champs were Noah Brown (170), Max Chaffee (182) and Rockne Hurley (195).

“We don’t worry about winning or losing. It’s about scoring points,’’ said Penn coach Brad Harper, who was carrying around a big hammer afterwards. “No matter how long the match, we want our guys to keep scoring points.’’

Why the hammer? “If we get a chance, we want a hammer, and a hammer is a pin,” said Harper. So the Penn guys get a hammer if they pin, like Jimtown guys get chains? “Guess what. Hammers break chains,” laughed Harper. Washington’s Isaiah Williams was the only champ from South Bend, upping his

season record to 41-0 with a 6-0 win over Mishawaka’s Alex Faulkner in the heavyweight finale.

Williams is ranked No. 1 in Indiana in the 285-pound weight class. “To be ranked No. 1 in the state, you have to show it,” said McWilliams. “I want to be

dominant the whole state series.” Mishawaka’s champs included Ben Kensinger at 160 and Jacob LaPlace, who

moved to 36-3 at 145. “I just go with the groove,” said LaPlace, who recorded a pin, technical fall and major

decision along the way. “If there’s a pin there, I’ll take it. If it’s a tech fall, I’ll take it.” Plymouth’s Graham Calhoun is 42-0 in the 152-pound class, though he had a tough

finale against Mishawaka’s Joe Walker, eventually prevailing 6-3. “That’s the fourth time I’ve wrestled (Walker) and he’s tough,” said Calhoun. “It gets

closer each match.” Nate LaFree won for Plymouth at 220, scoring the deciding takedown with 20

An area shutout at wrestling semistate

EAST CHICAGO – And then there were none. For the first time in memory, no area wrestlers won a championship at the high school

semistate wrestling tournament Saturday in East Chicago. That included Washington heavyweight Isaiah McWilliams, who suffered his first loss of

the season, dropping a 4-1 decision to Chesterton’s Eli Pokorney in the championship match. Plymouth’s Nate LaFree finished second in the 220-pound weight class. Penn’s Tanner

DeMien was second at 126. “You just have to use this (loss) as motivation and come back stronger next week,” said

DeMien, who was beaten by Portage’s Colin Poynter, 9-2, in the finale at East Chicago High School.

Plymouth’s Graham Calhoun suffered his first loss the season at 152, as Portage’s Donnell Washington Jr. scored a takedown with 10 seconds remaining to score a 2-1 semifinal victory.

Calhoun bounced back to finish third by edging Mishawaka’s Joe Walker, 4-2, in the consolation round.

Portage scored 184 points for the team title, advancing nine wrestlers to next week’s state finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Defending champ Chesterton finished second. Penn took third with 85-1/2 points and advanced six guys to state, while Mishawaka was seventh, advancing three.

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to state, which begin a 6 p.m. Friday (EST) and continue until Saturday evening.

The semistate started with great promise for local wrestlers, but quickly fell apart in one of the worst semifinal performances in years.

After 14 qualified for the state finals by winning their quarterfinal matches, only three made it to a semistate championship bout.

DeMien pinned LaPorte’s Skyler Gomez in his 126-pound semi, while LaFree edged LaPorte’s Kyle Simpkins, 7-4. McWilliams was a 2-0 winner over Wawasee’s Elisha Tipping in his 285-pound semi.

Of course, getting to state is a great accomplishment in itself. But the third and fourth place finishes that come with a consolation match means that each wrestler will be facing a higher-seeded first-round opponent in Indianapolis next Friday.

“We just have top focus on how we can push ourselves in each match (at state) to be the best we can be,” said Penn coach Brad Harper. “We had to regroup after the semifinals today. Now we have to give max effort the rest of the way.”

Finishing third by winning in the consolation round were: LaPorte’s Gomez (126), Penn’s Logan Hill (132), Preston Risner (138) and Rockne Hurley (182), Mishawaka’s Jacob LaPlace (145) and Ben Kensinger (160), and Plymouth’s Graham Calhoun (152).

“I have to work on my mat awareness,” noted Plymouth’s Calhoun. “Of course I didn’t want to lose today, but the big goal is still ahead next week.”

Fourth place finishers included: Penn’s Vince Sparrow (120) and Max Chaffee (189), Joe Walker (152), and LaPorte’s Kyle Simpkins (220).
