Thanksgiving Food Drive. “We dropped off the donation bags earlier in the week and we are expecting to collect around 22,000 pounds of food on Saturday,” he said. Murray said in the first year of the food drive, the group collected 15,000 pounds of food. “The numbers have risen each year we’ve done it as more and more people have become aware of it,” he said, adding that the volunteers who pick up the food see a response rate of about 30 per cent. “We hope it grows again this year,” he said. Anyone who didn’t get a bag dropped off at their home is encouraged to drop off their donations at the food bank in Sidney (in Iroquois Park). “If anyone filled their bag and left it out but it didn’t get picked up, they can also call the number attached to the bag and someone will come pick it up that day,” he added. The food drive, which takes place all over the province, ensures an influx of food into food banks during a particularly low time of year. “From now until Christmas is one of the hardest times for food banks because many people don’t think about donating in the fall,” he said. He has big boots to fill, but he says he’s up for the job.

Meet Constable George Phipps, Sidney North Saanich RCMP’s new Community Police Office who took the reins from Constable Ravi Gunasinghe earlier this summer.

Phipps, who has been with the RCMP for 17 years and with Sid-ney North Saanich RCMP for the last three, says he is looking for-ward to his new role which will allow him to engage more with the community.

“In my new role, I will working in all the schools in Sidney and North Saanich as well as engag-ing with community members on

projects like block watch,” he said.Phipps said he will run the

DARE and WITS programs (anti-drug and anti-bullying) programs

at local schools along with acting as a go to for any youth who have

questions or concerns. As well, he said he is looking forward to implementing more Block Watch programs in Sidney and North Saa-nich.

“Block Watch is such a great tool and it’s been under-utilized over the last few years because we haven’t had the resources for it.

“In my ideal world, every com-munity throughout Sidney and North Saanich would be involved with block watch.

“It’s just a great way for the com-munity to be engaged and look after each other.”

Prior to transferring to the Sid-ney North Saanich detachment, Phipps worked in Langley, on the West Shore and on Salt spring Island.

The Community Police Officer role is switched out every handful of years to give different members a chance to work in the commu-nity.

Constable Ravi Gunasinghe is still working with the Sidney North Saanich RCMP as an officer.

Podmore not seeking re-election in NovemberDevon MacKenzieNews staff

Current Sidney Town Council-lor Kenny Podmore announced this week that he won’t be seeking re-election in November’s municipal election.

“This has been a very difficult decision for me to make, a decision that my wife Anita and I have made together,” Podmore said in an email to the Peninsula News Review this

week.“It is a very emotional time for me

giving up my position as a councillor for this amazing town.”

Podmore was elected to council in 2008.

Podmore is also Sidney’s official Town Crier, a title he plans to uphold, he said.

Gazette writer at Toronto film festivalDon DescoteauNews staff

Goldstream News Gazette staffer and former Peninsula News Review reporter and pho-tographer Arnold Lim lived a filmmaker’s dream last week.

The photojournalist and vid-eographer visited T-O, joining director Connor Gaston for the premiere of their short film, Godhead at the Toronto Interna-tional Film Festival.

Lim is one of three producers for the 11-minute film, the others being Gaston and Chris Orchard.

Godhead, filmed in and around Victoria, showed at the festival as part of the Short Cuts Canada program.

“[I was] excited to see (Greater Victoria) filmmakers repre-sented at the festival, which is one of the largest in the world,” Lim said.

“I see this as an opportunity for others who will come after us.”

The film is one of 40 shorts accepted into the festival out of more than 800 submissions, he said.

Being a part of a film project

being shown on such a large stage has been a goal of Lim’s since he began getting involved in filmmaking, he said.

“This is something I hoped to do by the time I was 40 or even 50,” the 36-year-old Saanich resi-dent said.

The group hopes to see the film screened at other film festi-vals, in Calgary and Vancouver and potentially Victoria next February, Lim said.

No plans are in the works yet to screen it here beforehand.

Planting the roots for a greener North Saanich

NORTH SAANICH — The District of North Saan-ich announced this week that it has been selected by TD friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) and Tree Canada to receive a $3,600 TD Green Streets grant for its 2014 urban reforestation pro-gram.

The funding will support the District of North Saanich Denham Till Tree Planting Project, which includes the planting of approximately 12 Garry Oak trees in the southern area of the park which is located between Clayton and Birch Roads.

“The goal of TD Green Streets is to encourage the adoption of leading-edge practices in munici-pal forests, and we want to commend the District of North Saanich for developing a plan that will provide such a great enhancement to the environ-ment,” said Mary Desjardins, Executive Director of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.

“The plantings will provide habitat and food for wildlife and improve air quality, as well as pro-mote community involvement in the protection and preservation of our urban forest.”

“We congratulate the district of North Saan-ich for developing an initiative that will create an important green space in their community,” said Michael Rosen, the President of Tree Canada.

“We are pleased that we have been able to sup-port the efforts of the District of North Saanich and we look forward to seeing their plan come to life.”

North Saanich is one of 25 communities selected to receive a TD Green Streets grant.

TD Green Streets is open to Canadian munici-palities, First Nations communities and Business Improvement Associations (BIAs) across the country.

Submissions are reviewed by regional Tree Can-ada Advisers, Board Members, urban forest prac-titioners and TD Friends of the Environment foun-dation representatives.

The submissions selections are based on inno-vation, community involvement and technical expertise.

For more information on TD Green Streets, visit tdgreestreets.ca.

NORTH SAANICH — North Saanich resident Heather Gartshore announced this week that she will be running for a seat on Council this November.

Gartshore said in a press release that the timing is right for her to get more actively involved in community governance.

“Numerous North Saanich residents, as well as past and pres-ent councillors, have encouraged me to run over the years,” said Gartshore.

Gartshore is cur-rently the Vice Presi-dent of the North Saa-nich Residents Asso-ciation and Vice Chair of the North Saanich Parks Commission.

She said in the press release her decision

to seek office is based partly on the discord she’s observed on the present council.

“The current council majority has demon-strated a style of lead-ership that many find objectionable and I believe that North Saa-nich residents deserve better.

“The democratic pro-cess is currently not

being well served in our community. I am committed to bringing informed, collaborative and respectful dialogue back to the council chambers.”

Gartshore said a main priority for her is to respect the Official Community Plan as the voice of North Saanich residents and a guide to decision making.

“I have found it tre-mendously frustrating that significant deci-sions related to hous-ing have been made recently without an OCP review or ade-quate opportunity for engagement with the community.”

Gartshore has lived in North Saanich for 26 years.

CENTRAL SAANICH — Good weather bought out more than 250 people to   walk and run in the 34th Annual Terry Fox Run held at Centennial Park on Sept. 14.

The event raised just over $4,000 for the Terry Fox Founda-tion, and of that $4,000, 84 cents from each dollar goes directly to cancer research.

“We had a couple of partici-pants from Spain, one from Cal-gary, one from Ontario and a few from the mainland,” said

organizer Connie Hearty.  “It was very humbling to walk

with these every day heroes,” she said.

Fox was battling bone cancer when he began his Marathon of Hope in 1980 at the age of 21.

He ran the equivalent of a mar-athon a day for 143 days until they discovered his cancer had spread to his lungs.

His run ended in Thunder Bay and he passed away months later at the age of 22.

A big bouquet and a thanks goes to Driving Miss Daisy and my driver, Heather Thurston.

Recently I have been forced to give up driving and many other activities due to arthritis.

It’s been very frustrating and a bit depressing not to be able to do things, that is, until Driving Miss Daisy came to my rescue.

Heather is not only my driver but she has also become my friend.

It’s more than a taxi service; there is nothing Heather won’t do to make my life easier.

So a big bouquet of red roses goes to Heather and Driving Miss Daisy.

Kudos to the municipalities of Central Saan-ich and Sidney for asking their citizens a non-

binding amalgamation question in the November elections.

Wouldn’t it be nice if North Saanich was so open as to assess the desires of its citizens?

So the mayors and councillors on the Saanich Peninsula are not in favour of amalgamation, what a shock.

Why not just ask them if they like the idea of losing their jobs?

Mayor Cross says he’s not in favour as it’s not in the best interest of Sidney. Sidney is all businesses and residential, collecting all kinds of taxes and very little infrastruc-ture to pay for.

In Central Saanich, we have lots of property in the ALR, which is great for local food production but not great for collecting tax revenue.

Exactly how will combining three municipalities into one cost more?

One Mayor and Council instead of three, one fire department, one police force, etc.

Don’t ask the fox who should be in charge of the hen house, ask the chickens!

Ministry caused problems in classrooms

Re: Factory model fading for schools (B.C. Views, Sept. 10).

I am a retired teacher with 37 years of experience.

The biggest mistake that the education ministry in British Columbia has made over my years of teaching (and they have made many), was putting the mentally handicapped into regular classrooms.

That robbed good students of the time required to help solve their problems as the teacher was too

busy working with the group whose progress was nil.

That decision also immediately required teacher aides, some of whom did very little to help out in the classroom.

The ministry caused this problem and now they do not want to fund it. This is typical government mismanagement.

Police should act on intersection problems

Are the Central Saanich Police waiting for a physical fight between a car and a pedestrian at the Mount Newton and East Saanich Road intersection?

This past week, I had yet another interaction with a car driver at the intersection.

After waiting for two cars to cross the intersection, I stepped out before the last car completed crossing the intersection (often if one does not start into the intersection using a car to block, the wait can be long before another opportunity rises to cross).

A car making a left turn off East Saanich onto Mount Newton started out while I was in the middle of the Mount Newton east bound lane and almost hit me.

The driver expressed his apology with profanity. As he passed me, he was so close my hand came down on the top of his car.

A normal person would describe that as a close call, but not the Central Saanich Police. I have tried

complaining numerous times to them about this intersection to no avail.

When will the police do their job and police and enforce the rules of the road?

Virtual classroom model Re: Factory model fading for

schools (B.C. Views, Sept. 10).With respect to class size, one

thing that is never discussed is the lack of behavioural discipline of the students.

Some years ago I had a job as a teaching assistant in the federal prison system, where I noticed that many prisoners were stuck at the grade five level. That led me to take the social service program at a secondary institution to become a teaching assistant in the public schools.

While doing my practicum in a school, I was appalled at the chaos in the classroom. Juxtapose that to my experience in public school where we didn’t dare chat, never mind wandering about.

If students in a classroom were studying online with only a monitor walking around, the matter of discipline would not be an issue. You could have many students in a classroom, each student progressing at his or her own speed and then have periodic tests as is done through distance education.

Let taxpayers decide on amalgamation

Greater respect needed between cyclists, motorists

A fear of death shouldn’t be what keeps people from choosing to ride a bicycle. But it just might.

Another cyclist was seriously injured in Victoria this week. The crash was scantly covered by the media, and then drops away.

Only weeks ago, a cyclist was killed on the Pat Bay Highway in North Saanich.

The devastating results of a crash between a bicycle and a vehicle are quite evident.

The roads are packed with vehicles, driven by motorists weighed down by a multitude of potential distractions.

Victoria and Esquimalt have been expanding their cyclist infrastructure, but it needs more work. Lots more work.

And giving cyclists plenty of room on the road doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be safe from

inattentive drivers.An average of 150

cyclists are injured every month in B.C. during peak riding season of May to October, according to ICBC.

We should all be encouraging more cyclists to strap on helmets and take to the streets. It’s healthy for commuters and recreational riders, the environment and a congested city. But those statistics don’t do much for a cyclist’s confidence.

Yes cyclists must do their part too. The insurance corp advises cyclists to never assume drivers can see them, and to wear bright, reflective clothing—and use lights at night.

But how many times have you seen a motorist park in a bike lane? Fail to yield to a cyclist? Nearly knock a rider over while passing?

It happens too often.Drivers and cyclists need to watch for each

other at all times, use eye contact and hand signals.

Moreover, we all need to make efforts to build greater respect between drivers and cyclists.

Whether on two wheels or four, that starts with every one of us.

Drivers and cyclists need to watch for each other at all times

VICTORIA — Civic workers in North Saanich and Sidney have ratified new labour agreements with their respective employers.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced Sept. 11 that a three-year deal had been reached between employees and the municipalities of

Victoria, North Saanich, Colwood, Oak Bay, Sid-ney, Metchosin, Esquimalt and on the West Shore.

Also part of the deal are the Greater Victoria Public Library, Capital Regional District and the Victoria Police Board.

While contract language varies, the overall agreement was for wage increases of 1.75 per cent in year one, one per cent in each of January and July of 2015 and two per cent in 2016.

The contracts run until December, 2016. Employ-ers ratified the deals in August. — CUPE

Aboriginal leaders opened their meeting with the provincial cabinet Thursday by urging them to resume discussions to recognize aboriginal title instead of dragging out case after case in the courts.

Premier Christy Clark convened the special session in Vancouver Thursday after visiting the Nemiah Valley near Williams Lake, where the Tsilhqot’in Nation established title in a landmark ruling in June. Clark signed a letter of understand-ing with the Tsilhqot’in to work on implementing the verdict of the Supreme Court of Canada ruling, the first to acknowledge title to a specific area of what was considered Crown land.

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs told the gathering in Vancouver that Clark’s “public platitudes” echo those of former premier Gordon Campbell in 2009 when he pro-posed legislation to recognize title province-wide.

That proposal caused the B.C. Business Council to “set its hair on fire” and issue “an inflammatory legal opinion” that derailed the effort, Phillip said.

In fact it was B.C. aboriginal leaders who voted the proposal down four months after it was pulled from the legislature on the eve of the 2009 B.C. election.

Grand Chief Ed John of the First Nations Summit recounted federal and provincial efforts to thwart land claims cases, from prohibiting aboriginal peo-ple from hiring lawyers in the 1920s to the tactics used in the 2007 Tsilhqot’in trial.

That trial ran for 339 days in B.C. Supreme Court, after 10 pre-trial motions by federal and provincial lawyers trying to have the case thrown out on technical grounds, John said. When that failed, Xeni Gwet’in Chief Roger William, the named plain-tiff, was made to testify for 46 days and none of his testimony was used by government lawyers after that, he said.

Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad said the Tsilqot’in letter of understanding is a com-mitment to redress issues of the past, including the “wrongful trial and hanging of the Tsilhqot’in chiefs in 1864-65.”

Safety Tip:Fall is a good time to assemble an emergency kit for your car – or check the one in your trunk. Kits should include booster cables, tire sealer and infl ator, towrope, an emergency signal cone, fi rst aid

kit, batteries, fl ashlight, a thermal blanket, rain poncho, and gloves.

Honda Fit goes big but in a smaller packageThe subcompact segment in Canada had been a bit stale, until this past year, when we witnessed a number of new entries into this segment. In 2013, Nissan introduced the Versa Note hatchback and earlier this year Nissan followed up with the Mi-cra, the least expensive car on the market ($9,998). The latest entry is the Honda Fit, the only vehicle in this com-petitive class to come with an amazing array of seating options that make it a wonder-on-wheels. LooksIn an age where most cars get bigger from one generation to the next, Honda has bucked the trend and actually shaved 41mm off the overall length of this new 2015 Fit, but improved interior volume. The way they achieved this is by stretching the wheelbase and shortening the front and rear overhangs. This move also helped in the styling department by producing more of a wedge front surface with a sleeker front windshield. The Fit now looks longer, sleeker, and less top heavy. Priced from $14,495 - $22,595, the Fit, on paper, might not look as attractive as the top selling Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio. But when the buyer factors in the versatility of this vehicle and the fact it has the highest retained value in this class, according to Canadian Black Book, it can offer good value.InsideAs attractive as the new exterior is, the interior has always been the real story. There is no other car in the subcompact, or even the compact class, that has the same functionality and flexibility. This

new 2015 has 79mm of additional rear seat room, the largest cargo area, class leading passenger volume and more front shoulder room than its competitors. That’s all good stuff but the design of the rear seats and car-go floor make all of that room even more useful. Honda has what they call Magic Seats: an

outrageously simple rear seat design that allows the seat bottom to flip up, making the rear seat floor accessible to store large or tall objects. This would be a great place to transport a dog, almost like a kennel on wheels. Since the fuel tank is placed under the front seats instead of the typical location under the rear cargo floor, this allowed the designers to lower the rear floor offering a much deeper cargo area. Combine this with the ability of the rear seats to fold, plus the front passenger seat to be re-clined to help transport extra long items the Fit has the space race won.DriveHonda has a new line of engines it calls Earth Dreams, a less than subtle mocking of Mazda’s Skyactiv. The essence of this new engine technology is taking variable valve timing and direct injection, plus a lighter design to help in power delivery and fuel consumption. The new 1.5L engine has eleven per cent more power, at 130hp, plus more torque at 114 lb.-ft. but is 27 per cent lighter than the old engine. The power goes to either an all-new 6-speed manual that is available on all trim levels or a new continuously variable transmission that expands the gear, ratio range by fourteen percent. What this means in

terms of drivability is a better jump off the line and improved highway cruising. Because the new transmission reduces weight and friction, the fuel economy has improved by 16 per cent, which is an amazing accomplishment in such a small car. Rated at 7.0L/100km in the city and 5.7L on the highway, using the much tougher 2015 fuel standards, this represents fuel number buyers will actually be able to achieve. In addition, the suspension has been improved for more responsiveness but I found the ride a bit choppy over bumpy roads.VerdictThere is so much to talk about with the Honda Fit from space to design and new engineering; it is easy to overlook the creature comforts that have been added. There is now a height adjustable drivers seats, a standard 5-inch LCD screen with backup camera and Bluetooth all on

the base $14,495 DX trim. Move up one step to the $17,295 LX trim and Honda includes a huge 7-inch touch-sensitive Display Audio system and heated front seats (my favourite). There is also the $19,195 EX trim with alloy wheels, paddle shifter and moon roof, but the big news is the inclusion of the $21,295 EX-L Navi trim. This is the EX trim with leather and navigation, making the fit downright opulent. This isn’t the least expensive car in this class but on the whole it offers so much more than just a price point. This car is all about smart money.

By Keith Morgan

Milton Keynes, England – The security here seemingly rivals that of the most top-secret government institutions.“Without the proper finger you can’t get in,” says Silvia Halfar, grinning while prodding the fingerprint scanner. The door clicks open to the Infiniti-Red Bull Racing factory, where we would observe the hi-tech production tech-niques behind the success of four-time world F1 champion driver Sebastian Vettel and the four Constructors’ Championship titles earned by the team. The design genius is indisputably Adrian Newey. With ten Constructors’ Championships under his belt, won with three different teams – Williams F1, McLaren and now Infiniti-Red Bull – he has no rival.“Adrian draws up to 100 designs (car parts and components) a week and I mean draws, literally,” informs Silvia. His work is scanned and 3D printers generate models for testing. It’s not a one-man show: more than 600 people design, test, build and as-semble the hundreds of thousands of parts required for the race cars driven by Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo. Every season, the 110-strong design team produces a new car that conforms to the strict F1 regulations. A super com-puter tests every part virtually, before a new model hits the former Concorde jet wind tunnel in nearby Bedford. Its processing power is a closely guarded

secret but it’s greater than 35,000 iPads combined.Different parts are designed for every racetrack, sometimes within 24 hours of a race. The race simulator is out of bounds but we learn new part profiles are fed in and tested virtually by the drivers on any of the F1 circuits programmed into the machine. It was likely over-worked this year as the old V8 engines were replaced with turbo-powered 1.6-litre V6 hybrid powerplants. There are no underground tunnels between the four buildings so when a secret race-winning part is produced what happens? – Silvia laughs: “Well, then we put it on a tea trolley, cover it with a towel and wheel it across the road.”By the time the chuckling had died down, we were all peering through the windows of a huge gym. “The race team has to keep fit,” said

Silvia, anticipating our question. There are also trainers and nutritionists available to the pit side crew. Turns out the garage guys practice pit stops every day within the factory’s four walls. “The team holds the world record for a pit stop in 1.923 seconds!” she add-ed. Every one-hundredth of a second can mean the difference between a win and loss. Shortly before leaving, we stand by a windowless wall. It’s the operations room, in where live data is analysed and information fed back to the race-track. No admittance. “After one race the winning team Tweeted a picture of their ops room . . . . we could see who was in the room and what programs they were running on their monitors.”With that, the exit door buzzed and the cool air rushed in to take our places.

DrivewayBC.ca

Race route not for the fast and furious By Keith Morgan

Milton Keynes, England: As we climbed into a gleaming Infiniti Q50 sports sedan, one killjoy warned the road to the Belgian Grand Prix would be like a dance – quick, quick, slow. The tour of the Infiniti-Red Bull Racing factory had us pumped and ready to roar Sebastian Vettel-like, along the UK’s motorway network to Folkestone, Kent. There we would take Le Shuttle train beneath the waves of the En-glish Channel to France and on to Spa, Belgium. It would be a

600-kilometre drive (374 miles) and take less than six hours. The doomsayer was right, try ten hours! The aforementioned four-time F1 champ influenced the production of this car so it was a neat idea to take the sharp-looking Q50 on an ex-tended spin to a race weekend. However, plain sailing it was not as we encountered motor-way chaos to the EuroTunnel. It was equal parts low-gear slow crawl, near-posted speed limit bursts – enabling a few paddle-flipping-gear changes – and parking pauses

long enough to test the eight-position power seat adjustments and play with the large dual touch screen infotainment displays. The navigation system ‘lady’ suggested we take the M25 the opposite way around London. Whoops. Should have ignored her.Nevertheless, this was all a blessing because the car was forced to perform in adverse conditions and its mettle/metal was truly tested.Extended time at the wheel of a 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 version (starts at $37,500) and a Hybrid ($10,000 more) with a 3.5-litre engine left me scratching my head about which would be my choice. Both provide a quiet, com-fortable drive, not averse to a sprint when necessary, all aided by a seven-speed auto transmission that is as a smooth as a baby’s you-know-what. All-wheel-drive would be an option I would choose on either model.Interestingly, the constant-ly changing speed limits flashing above helped show off the predictive forward collision technology. If you trust the car ahead, the radar-controlled gizmo will govern your speed and braking automatically. In addition, lane control keeps you on the straight and narrow should you drift into that passing car you were alerted to by another warning system. Thanks to the $320 flexi pass, we rolled with ease onto the train and smirked at the lineup with the $120 tickets. About 40 minutes

later, we were enjoying the French countryside, travel-ling for extended periods at the construction zone speed of 30 klicks.Darkness enveloped the road ahead but our way through Belgium was lit by the most spectacular elec-tric storm. Ah yes, the wind-shield wipers performed efficiently in a downpour of Biblical proportions. We finally reached Spa, birthplace of Agatha Christie’s fictional detective Hercule Poirot, and famous for its therapeutic cold springs. By the time we arrived, we’d had enough of the cold springs from above. The inclement weather didn’t dampen our spirits as we rubbed shoulders for the next two days with the fast and the fashionable in the Formula One Paddock Club at the Circuit de Spa-Fran-corchamps. Champers was the breakfast of champions at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix, if you had the admis-sion price of $3,500 burning a hole in your jeans.

‘‘Plain sailing it was not as we encountered motorway chaos to the EuroTunnel.’’Keith Morgan

Race route not for the fast and furious

By Alexandra Straub

The top is down. The sun is shining. It’s not a bad day to be stuck in downtown traffic.John Legend’s “All of Me” comes on the radio while behind the wheel of the 2014 Fiat 500C. As I wait in the Georgia Street parking lot, I listen intently to the song. Some lyrics of the song are: “Love your curves and all your edges, all your perfect imperfections.”Hmmmm.As I contemplate this, it applies directly to the pint-sized Fiat I’m captaining. In fact, there are imperfec-tions about this four-seater that drive me crazy but I can’t seem to dislike it.One example is the sound that greets you as you enter its cabin. There is nothing melodic about it. No mellifluous ding-dong ding-done; just a harsh monotone noise that seems to stay longer than an uninvited party guest. Even passengers commented on how annoying it is.The volume buttons on the dash really should be knobs. You should be able to crank up The awesome Beats premium audio system in a hurry, not push by push. (It’s worth the additional $495 price tag.) Visibility is mediocre at best, especially with the top up. The canvas roof doesn’t allow for great visibility when backing up – top up or down – but thankfully there are backup sensors

that help guide you into the spot you want to be in.The trunk only hosts 269 L. Unless you’re packing light, or just ditching the bags and merely bringing a debit card with you on a road trip, fitting four people in-side and their luggage will be a challenge. On the plus side, the drop top doesn’t take away any precious space when open. Then there’s the optional TomTom navigation that sits atop the dash and cuts into one’s forward visibility. An awkward spot for GPS system. Pairing a Bluetooth device isn’t that straightfor-ward either. Not to mention, the 500C, with its 1.4L engine and humble 101 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque isn’t a stable stallion. Despite its lack of power, pressing the Sport button helps it feel a little peppier. The 5-speed manual transmission is hardly a chore, even when I’m just inching along at a snail’s pace.

Topless Fiat flawed but that’s part of its charm

‘‘There are imperfections that drive me crazy but I can’t seem to dislike it.’’Alexandra Straub

While its imperfections should cause me to think about ever wanting to drive or own one, I still can’t seem to stop loving this little car. I like its quirkiness

and the fact that it’s not perfect. I love the exterior colour: Espresso. It sparkles in the sun and has a warm richness to it.

When matched with the two-toned leather-trimmed bucket seats, it looks stylish and chic. Bringing the outside in, the espresso paint also colours

to life the dash. Combined with ivory touches, it has an upscale ambiance. The tester, being the Lounge trim of 500C, it has an MSRP of $23,995. That comes with keyless entry, a chrome shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel (and the aforemen-tioned leather seating surfaces with heated front seats), 4-wheel disc brakes, ABS, hill start assist and more. When not stuck in traffic, the 500C actually remains

quiet on the open road, with the top up, of course. It certainly doesn’t handle like its race-primed sibling, the Abarth, but still manages to turn on a dime when required. It’s also a lovely road com-panion because imperfec-tions on the road aren’t felt with abrasion or discomfort.Furthermore, if you want to shed some light on the cabin, there are three settings you can use at the push of a button. One is a sunroof-like option, the

next goes about 2/3 of the way down, and the last is all the way down. Either way, you have options on how much Vitamin D you’d like to consume.I feel like I’m back in grade school, sitting on the grass field at lunch, plucking the petals of a dandelion, one by one, saying, “I love it, I don’t love it, I love it, I don’t love… I LOVE IT!”Visit www.fiatcanada.com for more information.

THE ARTSRaising funds for furry friendsDevon MacKenzieNews staff

A fundraiser night taking place tomor-row evening at the Mary Winspear Centre will benefit the Balfour’s Friends Foun-dation — an organization dedicated to assisting pet owners in need by providing supplementary aid to ensure proper vet-erinary care can be supplied to their pet.

The event, a calendar release for the Firefighters and Friends calendar and the Cops and K-9 calendar takes place Satur-

day, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bodine Hall.

The evening will feature music by the O’Brien Family, dancing, a silent auction, door prices, a cash bar and appetizers.

Funds raised will go into the organi-zation which, apart from helping needy pet owners with veterinary care, also provides in and out of home care for pets whose owners are incapacitated or hospitalized and unable to immediately arrange for other care.

The Foundation, a not for profit orga-

nization, works with veterinarians and veterinary clinics who refer pet owners in need.

For more information on Balfour’s Friends Foundation visit balfoursfriends-foundation.webs.com.

For tickets to the calendar release fun-draiser ($25), call the Mary Winspear box office at 250-656-0275 or visit mary-winspear.ca to purchase tickets online in advance.

Central Saanich teen releases debut pop albumDevon MacKenzieNews staff

A 16-year-old Central Saanich resident has his eyes set on star-dom, and he’s work-ing hard to make his dreams come true.

Tristan Thompson, a student at Stelly’s Secondary School, recently released his debut album Here for You and has recently been featured on YTV and Breakfast Televi-sion in Toronto.

But his story really began a handful of years ago when he was only 10-years-old.

“It was right around the time that Michael Jackson passed away,” Thompson recalled.

“I remember being interested in who he was and looking up his music videos on You-Tube. Pretty soon after that I had taught myself all of his moves.”

At 11-years-old Thompson started per-forming and busking in Downtown Victoria.

“I remember that Canada Day, I had so many people crowded around watching my

Michael Jackson act that the police had to come in and start mov-ing people off the road because they were blocking traffic,” he laughed.

Soon after, Thomp-son began performing at weddings and birth-day parties, and his father began mentoring him in singing.

“I didn’t like sing-ing much because I was quite shy, but once I started singing people started telling me ‘wow, you actually have a great voice’ so I kept on it,” Thompson explained.

He said he and his father, Sean, spent many late nights in

their computer room at home practising.

“We would just sit around and jam and record. The more I sang the more comfort-able I became and then I started recording cov-ers,” he said.

Thompson ended up recording a cover of Swedish House Mafia’s Don’t You Worry Child and recorded a video for it with a local pro-duction company. The video was then uploaded to YouTube and quickly garnered thousands of views.

The video then caught the attention of songwriter and record label owner, Tylor Johnson, and a record contract between Thompson and Chat-ter Records was signed after some negotia-tions.

“It took us about six months to settle the contract but every-thing has been really great with the label. It really feels like it was all meant to be,” said Thompson.

Thompson’s album, Here for You, was recorded in Novem-

ber in CBC studios in Toronto and was released in April of this year. Since then, he has seen radio play on 100 stations across Canada and even into the U.S.

“I just want my music to reach out to people and make them smile and dance,” said Thompson.

“My dream now is make a mark in the

Canadian music scene,” he said.

Thompson is tour-ing with Teen Fest this month, which comes to Victoria on Nov. 1 at Pearkes Recreation

Centre. For more on Thomp-

son’s, visit tristan-thompsononline.com or see facebook.com/TristanThompsonMu-sic.

SPORTS

CENTRAL SAANICH — The Sport Climb-ing Association of Brit-ish Columbia (SCBC) announced this week that a number of Brit-ish Columbia based climbers are returning from the 2014 Interna-tional Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Championships in Gijon, Spain with accolades and some hardware.

First and foremost, SCBC member Sean McColl of North Van-couver, British Colum-bia was crowned the 2014 Men’s Overall

Climbing World Cham-pion, repeating the title he also won in 2012.

In Gijon, McColl com-peted in both the lead and speed disciplines and out of those ath-letes competing for the men’s overall title, he ranked 3rd overall in Bouldering, 1st overall in Speed, and 1st over-all in Lead, all more than enough to give McColl the overall title.

Nanaimo’s Elan Jonas-McRae and Kam-loops’ Robert Stew-art-Patterson, both of whom train at the Boul-ders Climbing Gym in

Central Saanich, also enjoyed success.

Jonas-McRae, com-peting in his first ever Worlds, completed two strong climbs in the lead competi-tion and finished 29th overall, the second best performance ever by a Canadian at the World Championships, the first belonging to the aforementioned McColl.

Combined with McColl’s sixth place performance in lead at Gijon, it also marks the first time ever that Canada has placed two

climbers in the top 30 in the lead competition at Worlds.

Stewart-Patterson, the Canadian Men’s record holder in speed, finished 22nd in the speed competition in Gijon and while that did not get him into the final rounds, it was the best ever performance by a Canadian at the World Championships.

In other speed news, world record holder Libor Hroza of the Czech Republic, who also trains at the Boul-ders, and was in sec-ond place after qualifi-cations, finished a dis-appointing 8th at the Worlds after slipping in his quarter-final run.

Boulders Climbing Gym coach Kimanda Jarzebiak was Team Canada’s official at the event.

“Building on the results of the Boulder World Championships, where we had two climbers in semi-finals for the first time, this was definitely the best ever showing for Can-ada at the World Climb-ing and Para-Climbing Championships. I am so proud of our ath-letes, and very excited for the future of com-petition climbing in Canada.

So you’ve bought a home, or maybe you own a home or office in need of some renovations. The task to plan a project within a bud-get can be daunting, but hiring an interior designer can help with the bulk of a project’s stress, says Lana Lounsbury.

Lounsbury, who is a registered interior designer out of Central Saa-nich, says hiring a designer can help with a number of things, cost sav-ings being one of the most impor-tant.

“Hiring a designer can ensure that you’re not going to make huge, expensive mistakes,” Lounsbury said.

“I’ve come in halfway through renos in some cases where the peo-ple are just so defeated because the project isn’t turning out how they’d planned. An interior designer can see a project through from begin-ning to end and ensure that it turns out exactly how you planned, and in most cases, better.”

Lounsbury said a general fee for an interior designer usually works out to be around five per cent of the project cost.

“Of course, it’s dependant on the size and scope of the project, but five per cent is a good rule of thumb,” she said.

Interior designers, she contin-ued, will come and consult with the homeowner or renovator and work up a plan for the space.

“Generally, a designer will work up two or three versions of a plan after the initial consult. Once the home-owner has decided which plan they want to go with, a designer will fol-

low the project through the whole way,” she said.

This includes the designer over-seeing things like installation, layout and any final checks before any por-tion of the project is started.

“When you hire a designer, what you’re getting is someone who is thinking about the whole process and someone who is there making sure it is done right. The role of a designer is not only to plan and inspire but also to implement and make sure that what you envisioned actually comes through,” Lounsbury said.

Lounsbury said hiring a designer comes down to personal preference, but there are some specific factors to watch for.

“Most interior designers are reg-istered with the Interior Designers Institute of B.C. (IDIBC) but it’s not mandated,” she said, adding that if someone isn’t registered, it doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t good.

“The most important things are going to be ensuring that you look at samples of the designer’s work and see if it speaks to you. Any good designer should have ample refer-ences, testimonials and project pho-tos,” Lounsbury explained.

She also noted that all designers should be covered by WorkSafeBC and errors and omissions insurance.

Ultimately, Lounsbury said, an interior designer will ensure a home-owner’s satisfaction with a project.

“You might spend a little more on

the designer’s fee, but what you save is liability, the headache of planning and executing a project on your own and having someone there who can pull it all together for you. Even if a designer saves you from one mis-take, that’s a cost savings,” she said.

And, Lounsbury added, there’s the benefit of having a designer pur-chase the renovation materials for you.

“Designers often get wholesale pricing on things, so even with the designer fee you’re probably look-ing at close to the same cost of buy-ing things at retail. Plus you get the expertise of the designer who knows the best places to source things and what materials you should be invest-ing more or less on,” she said.
