REGIONALFOODOne of the best things about living on the

Saanich Peninsula is the year ‘round

abundance and easy accessibility of

wholesome, locally grown food. We can

thank our mild climate, lots of rain and

sunshine, fertile soil and hardworking,

enlightened farmers for the bounty we enjoy.

From free range poultry and organically

raised livestock, to ambrosial fruits, seasonal

vegetables, delicate herbs and nursery stock,

there is no end to the variety produced by

peninsula farmers.

What could be more pleasant than stopping

by one of the farm markets or roadside stands

that dot the peninsula’s country roads, seeing

the incredible lushness of the crops and

chatting with the people who grow our food?

It’s no wonder that many chefs in the region

have become passionate about exploring the

offerings of local producers. The experience

of Candace Hartley, executive chef at

Dunsmuir Lodge, is a case in point. In her

words:

“When I first moved to Vancouver Island

from Toronto I was very excited to work in

such a beautiful region. I settled in

Brentwood Bay and as I drove to work each

day I marveled at the many farms and

roadside stands selling every kind of fruit and

vegetable. I couldn’t help but notice the wild

blackberries that were growing everywhere,

but when I asked the suppliers if we could

buy some blackberries, I was told ‘no one will

pick them, the small farmers won’t deliver

them and there isn’t enough quantity to

supply a large hotel’.

“But I couldn’t give up the idea of fresh

blackberries. As I continued to roam the

countryside exploring, I took every

opportunity to stop at the farm stands and buy

the most interesting produce I could find, and

chat with the farmers. This is how I met the

Austin family.

“The Austins have been picking wild

blackberries for me for many years now.

Many other small farmers now grow

specialty items for our use in the Dunsmuir

Lodge kitchens. I fill my freezer with

blackberries, raspberries, loganberries,

currants, gooseberries and more for use

during the winter. I use local squash,

pumpkins and corn, and as soon as the first

rain comes in the fall I know my Chanterelle

mushroom man will be at my back door.

“I look forward to the seasons. The quality

and variety of the produce inspires me. This is

the reason I am still cooking and loving it. To live and

work on the Saanich Peninsula, to have access to the

freshest ingredients (and to know the growers and

producers), to have easy access to really good goat

cheese, to witness the start-up of local wineries that use

locally grown grapes … this is a chef’s dream and I am

living it!”

is home to world class tourist attractions, luxury hotels

and spas, superlative culinary experiences at numerous

fine dining restaurants, and six wineries, each producing

a variety of product from grapes grown right here. And

routes to see the best of the peninsula. The routes begin

at the Pat Bay Visitor Centre, but you can pick up a trail

at any spot along the way.

The Oceanside Route takes you through Sidney and

along the shoreline as you follow it down Lochside

Drive to Mt. Newton Cross Road. After that you may be

inspired to get the catch of the day – salmon, halibut,

prawns – right off the boat!

The Countryside Route takes you along Mt. Newton

Cross Road, through Saanichton, down West Saanich

and on to the picturesque beauty of Oldfield Road. Fruit

and vegetables abound, over every hill and at every bend

in the road …

Explore the Wine Route beginning in North Saanich and

follow it all the way to Brentwood Bay and down the

peninsula. Stop for a tasting at every quaint winery – and

the cidery!

THE SAANICHPENINSULA

The natural beauty, geographic diversity, and

abundance provided by land and sea offer the

ideal conditions for commerce in agriculture,

trade and industry among residents of the

Saanich Peninsula. A mild climate, fertile soil,

and creative, diligent and dynamic people all

contribute to the peninsula’s lively economy.

Close to 2000 companies hold licenses to

carry on business here.

The Saanich Peninsula comprises the

municipalities of North Saanich, Sidney, and

Central Saanich, as well as northern portions

of Saanich and northern and eastern portions

of the highlands. The region, lying as it does

in the rain shadow of the Vancouver Island

mountains and Washington’s Olympic

Peninsula mountains, offers the driest

conditions on Vancouver Island – although

rainfall is, nevertheless, abundant!

Coast Salish First Nations have resided on the

Saanich Peninsula for more than 10,000 years,

and archeological sites are numerous. The

Tseycum, Pauquachin, Tsawout and Tsartlip

First Nations reside on the four peninsula

reserves.

The local economy thrives. The Greater

Victoria trading area has a population of more

than 330,000, and many of the region’s largest

employers are based on the peninsula.

North Saanich is home to the Greater Victoria

region’s major transportation links: the south

island’s main BC Ferry terminal at Swartz

Bay, and the Victoria International Airport,

both minutes from Sidney. The ferry terminal

and airport are inextricably linked to tourism,

and both play a major role in the region’s

economic health.

About 1500 people currently work on airport

land. According to Terry Stewart, Victoria

Airport Authority operations manager,

“There’ll be lots of opportunity over the next

10 years, for carefully planned and executed

development on airport lands.” Under

construction now is Viking Air’s 80,000

square foot hangar, needed for the company’s

expanding aircraft production. Thrifty Foods,

a major peninsula employer, has plans to build

a new distribution warehouse on airport lands.

Many peninsula businesses require highly

educated, highly skilled workers. Hi-tech,

engineering, aviation and other science-based

enterprises, many with international clients,

cluster on VAA lands. The Institute of Ocean

Sciences and the Pacific Geosciences Centre

operate from Fisheries and Oceans Canada

crown land off West Saanich Road, at Patricia

Bay on the Saanich Inlet. About 250 people –

scientists, technicians, support staff and ships’

crews – are employed on the site. Three post

secondary institutions within proximity of the

peninsula provide a source of educated and

skilled workers.

The peninsula’s vibrant marine industry

ranges from a commercial fishery and sales,

service and repairs, to high end marinas, yacht

sales and innovative hi-tech enterprises. The

industry also comprises a Canadian Coast

Guard station at Pat Bay, and a thriving

tourism component that includes eco-tours,

charters and whale watching. The Tseycum

First Nation offers marine-based aboriginal

tourism with its canoe tours. Boaters from all

over the Pacific Northwest seek the tranquil

marinas nestled among the sheltered coves

and bays of the peninsula’s shoreline.

Farms, stables, market gardens, roadside

stands, farm bakeries, bed and breakfasts,

vineyards and nurseries dot the rural

landscape in both North and Central Saanich.

Much of CS falls under the Agricultural Land

Reserve. Vantreight Farms, the municipality’s

largest agricultural operation, produces,

among other crops, 21 million daffodils

annually, for Canadian and US markets.

Central Saanich’s Keating area is Greater

Victoria’s largest industrial park.

Central Saanich, the largest land mass of the

peninsula's three municipalities, also has the

highest population and is home to two thirds

of the region’s agricultural land under the

Agricultural Land Reserve.

Brentwood Bay’s downtown core has

undergone a beautification and over the next

several years, some properties will be

redeveloped. The town’s seaside resort hotel,

Brentwood Bay Lodge & Spa is set to begin

construction on Ocean Villas, six luxury

residences on the waterfront.

The peninsula’s beauty, attractions, and

accommodation properties make it a natural

draw for small conferences and meetings.

Facilities are available at University of

Victoria’s Dunsmuir Lodge in North Saanich,

as well as Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney.

SIDNEYBY THE SEAThe name of the town captivates the

imagination and conjures images of a sunny

coast, gentle ocean breezes, quaint cottages

and charmed lives against a backdrop of

shimmering blue water. Yes, Sidney is all that,

and it’s much more …

Sidney is the gateway to the Gulf Islands

National Park Reserve. It’s home to

eco-tourism; whale watching operators; First

Nations eco-tourism; marine, diving and

fishing charters; world-class diving

experiences; an artificial reef below a very

long pier; several marinas; the Port of Sidney;

chandlers, boat builders, yacht, boat, canoe

and kayak sales and rentals; live marine

displays; a seaside fresh fish market; a

commercial fishing fleet; and dozens of

marine-based businesses that support all of

the foregoing.

In the spring of 2009, Sidney’s New Marine

Centre will open to the public. Located in

town-owned space in the Sidney Pier Hotel

building, the centre will house the Marine

Ecology Centre, and feature live and still

displays of sea life.

No doubt, Sidney is by the sea! But that’s only

part of the story. Sidney has a population of

just over 11,000 residents, and offers a mild,

Mediterranean climate, lush surroundings,

and plenty of leisure activities. Being so, it’s a

magnet for retirees, who make up over thirty

percent of the population, and for thousands

of tourists annually. All of these people need

goods and services, and Sidney, as the largest

town on the Saanich Peninsula, is the natural

commercial heart of the area.

The downtown core’s profusion of shopping

choices includes numerous specialty shops, as

well as professional and banking services.

Restaurants, delis and coffee bars abound. An

historical museum is housed in the “old Post

Office” building and, as Canada’s only

Booktown, Sidney is a bibliophile’s paradise.

The Mary Winpsear Centre is the site of

meetings, small conferences, community

events, weddings and other community

gatherings, as well as concerts, plays and

speakers in its 310-seat Charlie White theatre.

Across the highway, in West Sidney, a large

commercial and industrial area hosts

manufacturers, business services,

warehouses, storage facilities and high-tech

operations that require highly educated

workers. The Victoria International Airport

industrial lands and numerous aviation

businesses, skirt the edge of Sidney.

The construction industry continues to boom

in Sidney, as the demand for housing

increases and retirees and young families

migrate from the east. Infill housing

comprising duplexes, townhomes and

condominiums makes up an increasing

number of housing units in the town.

The community comes out in droves for

popular annual events that include Sidney

Days, around July 1, the Christmas Parade and

Sailpast, and summer bandstand concerts, all

organized by the Peninsula Celebrations

Society. It’s a rare weekend when there isn’t a

musical concert or play presented at Mary

Winspear Centre. Local culture includes

literary readings and book-signings by local

(and regional) writers, of which there are

many (some famous!). Local artists and

artisans open their studios for the bi-annual

Artists’ Studio Tours. The Sidney Fine Art

Show has become, in a very short time, one of

BC’s premier art shows. Sidney’s

summertime outdoor market, on Beacon

Avenue, attracts thousands of people every

Thursday, throughout late spring and summer.

Sidney has three “sister cities”: Cairns

Australia; Anacortes, Washington; and most

recently Nimi, Japan. A lively Sister Cities

association works to foster international

relationships, understanding and cooperation,

at the grassroots level, to promote Sidney

internationally.

PARKS CANADA- SIDNEY SPITMARINE PARKIt’s no wonder that the Gulf Islands are among

the most popular boating destinations in

Canada. These islands bask in a

warm Mediterranean

climate, and their

quiet bays,

rocky

headlands

and lush

greenery are a

draw for boaters,

kayakers and hikers

alike. During the summer

season, a constant parade of

sailboats, yachts and powerboats

can be seen from the Sidney

waterfront, cruising out from the Saanich

Peninsula’s many marinas and charter

companies to enjoy an island adventure.

Easily seen from Sidney, the northern end of

Sidney Island—known locally as Sidney

Spit—is part of Gulf Islands National Park

Reserve. The park is spread like a patchwork

quilt over 15 islands and over 50 smaller

islands and reefs in the southern Strait of

Georgia. The park protects a portion of one of

Canada’s most endangered natural regions, an

area where many plant and animal species

found nowhere else in Canada are at the

northernmost limits of their ranges.

A seasonal foot passenger ferry departs from

the dock at the foot of Beacon Avenue,

shuttling visitors out for a day trip or to enjoy

an overnight camping trip. Visitors should

register at a designated campsite before the

last ferry leaves for the day. This part of the national

park reserve provides wonderful opportunities for

nature lovers to extend their stay in the Sidney area.

Long walks along the sandy spit, picnicking and

birdwatching are favourite activities there. Mooring

buoys and dock space are available for those who

visit the island by boat.

Just outside the Town of Sidney is McDonald

campground, one of the national park reserve’s two

drive-in campgrounds. Located just a few minutes

from the Swartz Bay and Anacortes ferry terminals,

this campground is a great home base for exploring

the Gulf Islands. Park lands on Mayne, North and

South Pender and Saturna Islands are accessible by

BC Ferries’ southern Gulf Islands routes.

BC Ferries terminal, from Anacortes,
