Wheelchair Basketball This week we were lucky enough to have Rebound WA visit the school and facilitate a session of Wheel LIFE. Wheel LIFE is designed to motivate and educate students by giving them a practical understanding of what it is like to live with examples of physical disability. They gained a more inclusive outlook, and how being active leads to a healthier life.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was a true pleasure to see them listen to the presenters and have the opportunity to experience for a short moment how it is to play sport with a disability.

Full Family Details Form It is important that our records for all students and families are accurate, to enable us to communicate efficiently with you and have current medical and other records for our students. By now, all families should have received an email with their Full Family Details form, and a request that these forms are updated, signed and returned to the College by 22 February 2021. Thank you to those families who have returned their form. If you haven’t as yet returned your form, we ask that you do so as soon as possible so we can verify or update our records. If you have any queries regarding the form, please contact Mrs Shirley Nolan in Administration at the College on 9562 2400.

Year 7 Student Leaders The first leadership opportunity for the Year 7 students at the College is that of Care Group Representative. On Monday, at a short assembly during Care Group, we recognised the following students for being chosen as their Care Group Representative for Semester One. I look forward to working with these eight students this semester, as I am sure they will have many great ideas and suggestions for the Year 7 students. Mr Darren Ballantyne Assistant Deputy Principal Year 7

Adventure World

On Friday, 26th February, students enrolled in the Year 11 ATAR Physics course witnessed first-hand, applications of forces and motion on show throughout every single ride at Adventure World. Ten students were thoroughly engaged in the process of collecting data in order to address five key areas of the Physics course, an opportunity only permitted by experiencing aspects of Physics applied on such a large scale. Below is one student’s reflection of the day;

‘The Adventure World excursion was the event the Year 11 Physics class had most anticipated all year. The bus ride was filled with laughs and excitement as our enthusiasm grew exponentially. When we arrived, we were instantly rapt with awe as we stared at all the crazy rides available for our enjoyment. It would be

impossible to list all the highlights of the day because even as we conducted experiments and took results, our class could not help but have fun. It would be amiss if I didn’t mention the Kraken which we went on four times, if only to get accurate results. Krystel Gapuzan 11GA The students worked exceptionally well as a team and they can be extremely proud of the way they conducted themselves on the day while completing their first major assignment for the year. Mr Paul McAuley Science Teacher

Languages & Harmony Week Next week is Languages and Harmony Week. To celebrate our diversity of the different cultures we have in the College, there will be several competitions. Each morning, students will receive an email from Mademoiselle Harrison at 7.30am with a Language or Cultural question. The first student to email back the correct answer will win a voucher for our canteen. You do not have to be a Language student to participate. Each day, the winner and the correct answer will be published in the Notices. On Tuesday, we will have a whole school assembly. The best culturally dressed student in each Year level will win an iTunes voucher.

Language Perfect World Championship Year 7-12 Japanese and French Languages students can win a pizza lunch by competing in the Language Perfect World Championship during Languages Week. The Championship commences Tuesday 1pm and ends the following Tuesday. The top 5 students in both languages will win. Mademoiselle Harrison Languages Coordinator

Student Leadership Excursion This week, a group of students attended the 2021, City of Wanneroo, Youth Leadership Council. After engaging in a number of different leadership activities and problem-shooting, the attention of the day shifted towards discussing reform and change within our local communities. Students then spent the afternoon brainstorming different initiatives they can workshop to bring about positive change within the local community. Our students came up with a myriad of ideas. This leadership program culminates in a showcase evening, whereby the differing school groups present their pitches/initiatives/ideas to key stakeholders in the City of Wanneroo. At our next meeting, we will begin to fine-tune our ideas, and start focusing on developing

our initiative within the local community. Well done to the following students for their attendance and enthusiastic contributions, Darcy Aaskov, Mia Conroy, Charlotte Donovan Elloise Erikson, Thomas Fisher, Maxwell Johnston, Phoenix Main, Jack McCallum and Sienna Wong. Mr Kieran Parkes Politics & Law/English Teacher

Wheelchairs for Kids On Friday 26th February, Abbie, Kent, Daniel, and I went to visit Wheelchairs for Kids (WFK). As the first Year 10 group to visit the new Wangara base, we were extremely excited for what the morning would bring. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Brother Olly and introduced to the other Volunteers. We started the morning by assisting in areas of the workshop, such as collecting supplies and constructing brakes, as well as cutting and putting together materials for head and arm rests. After morning tea with the Volunteers, we were taken on a tour through the workshop to learn about the history of WFK. It was amazing to see the process of how each wheelchair is carefully crafted and tested. The amount of thought that goes into ensuring that ultimate care and comfort will be received before it is all packed together with donated toys and blankets, was extremely impressive. It was a fantastic experience that we will all remember. Although we were only there for a short period of time, we were all moved by the hard work that WFK puts into helping disabled children who are less fortunate. A huge thank you to Beppie and Brother Olly for having us, to Ms Jones for accompanying us, and to Ms Bell for organising the visit; we’d all love to go again! Elloise Erikson, 10MB

Music Clarinet and Saxophone Demonstration A large number of Year 7 students enjoyed clarinet and saxophone demonstrations on Tuesday, 8th March, by our College tutor and professional musician, Mr Tim Newhouse, who also conducts and rehearses the College Swing Band afterschool every Thursday. The students were involved in a ‘name that tune’ session where they identified the songs Mr Newhouse played. Mr Newhouse attempted to beat his record of how long he could play a note for, with students counting the

seconds and watching in awe, witnessing his long breath control. While students weren’t able to play one of the instruments, they were able to examine the various pieces of each instrument. There are a limited number of places currently available for clarinet and saxophone lessons at the College, as well as instrument hire at a cost of $80 per year. Places are filled on a first come first serve basis.

Drum-Workshop On Wednesday, 10th March, students from Mr Andrijasevich’s Year 7 Music Class enjoyed a Drum Workshop by Mr John Trotter, the College Drum Tutor and Percussion Ensemble coach. Mr Trotter has worked with a long list of artists as a professional musician including Jimmy Barnes, Robbie Williams, John Meyer and Cliff Richard. He has also recorded numerous film and TV soundtracks, as well as being a member of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band for four years. Mr Trotter explained and demonstrated the different types of beats and how they have evolved in music from the ‘swing’ style on brushes, to modern day pop and rock songs. A few students were able to try their hand at the drums, as well as requesting a variety of songs for Mr Trotter to play, from the extremely fast 20th Century Fox fanfare to White Stripes from Seven Nation Army.

We thank Mr Trotter for sharing his knowledge and expertise with us. Mrs Rosalie Richardson Music Secretary Daniel Cribb Visit The Year 9 General Music class have been working towards reviewing a music album of their choice. To assist them with the task, the class was visited by Daniel Cribb who is an online editor for theMusic.com.au and the managing Editor for Supanova Comic Con & Gaming. After recording in America and touring Australia, Europe and Japan with his band, Daniel looked for another

sustainable way to work in the music industry. His journalism background and his music industry knowledge led him to a career in music journalism which has seen him interview artists such as Tame Impala and Ed Sheeran and review many of major acts that come to Perth such as Taylor Swift, Eminem and Bruno Mars. Daniel gave the class a valuable insight to the music industry and his own journey to his current career. The class then had the opportunity to workshop review style writing, the skills of which they will apply to their upcoming assessment. The lesson was a wonderful insight to the music industry and provided valuable skills for completing music responses work this term. Mrs Erica Royle Acting Head of Performing Arts

St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School Reading Program On Wednesday at 7.55am, 7 very eager Year 8 students and myself set off across the oval to St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School. We were met in the primary school library by a group of very excited students who took to the task of reading with much enthusiasm, impressing us all with their reading skills and lovely manners. It was a lovely half an hour that gave our students an opportunity to mentor the primary school students by assisting with their reading, asking questions about the topic and encouraging their love of books. Our students were wonderful ambassadors for the College in the way they wore their uniform, the way they interacted with the younger students and their excellent manners.
