Community Support! 16
Greetings from the Director!Bubble Bump is finally here, after a bit of a frus-trating delay from the manufacturer, and we are VERY excited about this new activity. You can find the details on pages 10, 11 & 12 of the Activity Guide. But the only real way to find out what it’s all about is to experience it, so sign up before space fills up.
For those who responded to our survey a while back, Community Park East is getting a new playground, which was one of the highest pri-orities for our parks as indicated by all of you. Our plans are to surround the playground with native/water-wise plantings, move it closer to the path for accessibility, add trees for addi-tional shade, and create a layout that is a little different than our other playgrounds. And yes, we’re bringing back swings!
We had a successful start to PYB’s recreation league this past fall, and will move forward with the next age groups starting in January. We’re also continuing our popular skill work-shops with Coach Garnett of Overtime Training. And if that’s not enough basketball for you, our 2nd Annual 3 on 3 Tournament is scheduled for March 14 & 15.
We have plenty of new activities to offer too, so look for the blue “N” to clue you about that. For example, there are two new formats to our No School Open Gym that the kids should check out.
Looking ahead to summer probably seems crazy, but there are some important dates that should go on your calenders. See page 15, just below the index for those reminders.
Finally, despite Mother Nature and a little in-advertent damage, you should be enjoying the ice rink by now. We’re so lucky to have it! Grab your family and head to Roy Raley Park to share some wintertime fun.

REGISTRATION
MAIL/E-MAIL NEWSWe are now direct mailing the brochure to our mailing list. We also will continue to distribute periodic flyers through the schools that help fill the gap between brochures, typically around holi-day breaks. If you have registered for one of our activities in the past year, you will automatically be on our mailing list. If you aren’t on the list, you can request to be added on our website.
Online registration asks for your email address as part of your account set-up, which it also uses to confirm registrations and facility reservations. We occassionally use your email address for special announcements and if you would like to OPT-OUT of these special announcements, you can change your preferences in your online profile with our new system.
CREDITS & REFUNDSCredits (good for up to one year from the date of issue) or refunds are readily granted if we are no-tified 7 days prior to the start date of the program. Credits only will be granted if notified less than 7 days prior to program start date. Program fees are not refunded for participants who miss por-tions of programs.
WAITLIST INFORMATIONIf a class is full, you may see “register on waitlist” rather than “add to cart” when using online reg-istration. If you choose to continue your registra-tion, the system will place you on a waitlist. No payment is taken for placement on a waitlist. You will be called or emailed if an opening becomes available or if additional classes are created. If you fail to reply within 24 hours, the next avail-able person on the waitlist will be notified. Note that if additional classes are created, they may not be at the same time or day as the original pro-gram. Students on a waitlist are not guaranteed a space in the program.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COACHES: All lev-els of gymnastics improve a child’s body, mind and coordination. We, as gymnastics coaches, seek to teach gymnasts to control fear and frus-tration while working hard to learn new skills and children gain a great sense of accomplish-ment when they do so. Flexibility and coordina-tion gained from gymnastics makes for better all-around athletes in other sports.

PARKS AND RECREATION FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE - FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS
One of the cornerstones of the National Parks and Recreation Association’s philosophy is social eq-uity. They say, “Our nation’s public parks and recreation services should be equally accessible and available to all people regardless of income level, ethnicity, gender, ability, or age.”
Pendleton Parks and Recreation supports this phi-losophy in a multitude of ways, including a pro-gram of financial assistance for recreation activi-ties. While we offer many activities at no to low cost, we need to cover at least some of our costs with others. Unfortunately, that can put an activ-ity like gymnastics out of reach for some families. That’s where our financial assistance program helps.
There are two levels of assistance, 50% and schol-arship. Both require a co-pay of at least $5 per ac-tivity and the maximum benefit per activity guide is $50. Activity guides are printed 3X per year.
Assistance levels are determined based on family income and the number of people in the family, with current Health & Human Services poverty guidelines as the base.
APPLYING IS SIMPLE. All we need is:
• A family’s most recent Federal tax return, OR
• A printout from DHS, and
• The completed application form
Bring the documentation and application to the Parks Office and most of the time we can approve them on the spot. It is also helpful to have a list of the activities the assistance will apply toward.
Here’s an example of the benefit for a $79 basket-ball skills training class at the scholarship benefit level. $79 less the $50 maximum benefit means a family only pays $29 for 8 weeks of a healthy and fun recreation activity. There are only a couple things that are ineligible for finacial assistance,
swim lessons and birthday parties.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP? You can give someone acccess to recreation activities by donat-ing to the scholarship fund. Contact Lisa Patrick at 541-966-0228.
