GREAT GAINS, AMAZING LOSSES AND A NEW ADDITION TO THE FAMILY THIS MONTHQuite often we joke about the concept of a ‘phantom summer’, wondering if we’ve perhaps blinked and missed the one day of Summer that we are annually entitled to. But this year we aim to make the best of it, no matter what happens, with a great range of activities and things to do.
We’re very excited about the newest addition to the Pendle Leisure Trust family. Just in case you’ve missed the sizeable structure that has appeard on Vivary Way, our outdoor activity ’Urban Altitude’ opens to the public on June 8th, and we get chatty with the instructors in this month’s centre-fold article.
If you’ve got your holiday booked and you’re wanting to get beach-ready, then take a leaf out of Alwyn’s book (page 5) after he got back on track and went from a hefty 25 stone, down to an impressive 13.5 stone after joining his local Slimming World group and the gym at Pendle Wavelengths.
In addition to this we’ve got a great series of events taking place, including the return of the Edinburgh preview acts at The ACE Centre’s monthly Comedy N!ght.
In closing, we can’t forget our promise to help raise much needed funds for the Sam Shaw Appeal. To date our staff and customers have helped to raise an impressive £1,729 and it’s still rising, so thank you for that and you can find out more on page 11 of this month’s issue.
We hope you have a great Summer, don’t forget the sunscreen (if you’re lucky to get some sunshine) and we’ll see you next month!
The Pendle Leisure Trust team!

Every month The ACE Centre brings the best of the North-West comedy circuit to your doorstep as part of its monthly Comedy N!ght, with past performances from Paul Foot, Jenny Eclair, Ali Cook and Lucy Porter!

ALWYN’S AMAZING WEIGHT LOSS AT PENDLE WAVELENGTHS...Weighing 25 stone, with high blood pressure and borderline diabetes, it was time for a change.
I have always been a big person and at the beginning of last year I almost topped the 25 stone mark!
I did no form of exercise, was constantly tired and constantly worrying about my health. I was borderline diabetic, with high blood pressure too. I needed to do something about it and decided to join Slimming World. After successfully losing weight I felt it was time to start exercising.
When I joined Pendle Wavelengths gym in August 2012 I had already lost 5 stone
without any form of exercise, but I did feel it was time to become much more active.
So I signed up for the gym and was aided by a friendly fitness trainer called Rab, who listened to my story and introduced me to some of the fitness machines. He wrote out a fitness programme for me to follow that eased me gently into exercise and getting used to the gym equipment.
On my return visits to Wavelengths, Rab would always keep an eye on me, come over and see how I was doing and if I was having any problems, offered suggestions that would help me push myself further. He also updated my fitness plan when he noticed it had become easier for me to do.
Now I weigh 13 stone 5 pounds and feel much healthier and fitter. And it is all thanks to Rab and the other fitness trainers at Pendle Wavelengths. I really appreciate how much they have helped me. Thank you so very much.
Alwyn B.Thank you

ADVENTURE?
we catch up with our Team of aerial adventurers ahead of
the opening of our new aerial assault course!
It’s a windy Monday morning and stood eagerly on the
tarmac looking up at the mass of rope, wood and wire
before them is our new team, ready to take to the skies
as instructors on the new Urban Altitude course.
Consisting of two rope courses, a Power-fan free fall,
climbing wall, zip-wire and the terrifying Leap of Faith,
the new outdoor activity in Colne, is built on the site of
the old astro-turf at Pendle Leisure Centre.
Our team of highly-trained and qualified instructors
have been getting to grips with the course since the
beginning of May under the supervision of Antony
Reed from Positive Venture, ready for the opening on
Saturday June 8th.
Keeping our team grounded is new Centre Manager,
Peter Hinde.
Urban Altitude is the first of it’s kind in the UK to be
built in a town-centre location, making it a unique
opportunity for the people of Pendle and further afield
to enjoy an alternative outdoor activity.

WE’RE ONLINE...
THE LATEST FROM THE COURSEWe get the lowdown on the last two months from Course Operational Manager Stuart Buckley. After a terrible start to 2013 due to the weather, the ground staff have done a fantastic job getting the course back into shape. Lush fairways and excellent greens make the course one of the best in the North West!
April saw Marsden Park Golf Course host two major events - Brian ‘Beast’ Jensen’s Testimonial Golf Day and The Mayor’s Charity Open. Brian Jensen’s Testimonial Golf Day was attended by past and present Burnley Football Club players. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all, but the highlight was definitely when Sam Vokes hit an exploding golf ball which was caught on camera by Sky Sports!
The Mayor’s Charity Open in aid of Leukemia and Lymphoma Research attracted a full field of competitors. Although the weather wasn’t kind on the day, it certainly didn’t deter everyone’s spirit in raising a staggering £2,900!
A new pricing structure has been introduced for Season Tickets and Pay and Play. Season Tickets include Golf and Activo, 7 day, 5 day, Seniors, Couples, Junior and Intermediate years. The new Pay and Play rates offer discounts for the more people that play - only £40 for four people Monday - Sunday.
PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACHING AVAILABLE NOW!For more information contact the course on 01282 661912Marsden Park Golf Course now offers PGA Professional Golf Coaching for all ages and abilities. PENDLE LEISURE CENTRE UPDATE
WE’RE HERE TO LISTEN AND LEARN, PENDLE LEISURE TRUST’S NEW CUSTOMER COMMUNITY IS HERE TO HELP
The swimming pool at Pendle Leisure Centre in Colne is to remain closed for a little longer.
It was due to re-open on Tuesday, May 28th after being closed for six weeks to enable major refurbishment work to be carried out. But investigation work into the on-going pool leak has prolonged the closure.
Unfortunately, it has been more difficult than anticipated to locate the leak or leaks and as a result, the pool, despite the refurbishment work finishing on time, will have to remain closed. As soon as we have a date, we will make sure we let everyone know.
The refurbishment work at the Colne leisure centre includes the installation of new changing rooms, showers and lockers and better changing facilities have been created for families and disabled customers.
More information and updates will be posted on the Trust’s website and social media channels when we have further information.
It’s now even easier for you to ask us a question, report problems, suggest ideas and give praise online with our new Customer Community.
Our new community, powered by GetSatisfaction, will also help you get the answers you want quicker by looking for other questions, problems and suggestions that have already been answered by our team, cutting down on waiting times for emails and repsonses.
We are eager to hear what you have to say, so join us and get started by posting in the community today!
You can visit the community on our website, Facebook and also at https://getsatisfaction.com/pendleleisuretrust
Thanks for your participation, we appreciate it and we’re listening.

PENDLE LEISURE TRUST STAFF VOW TO HELP SAM SHAW FIGHT NEUROBLASTOMA
11
GO TEAM SAM!
He is 4 years old, his favourite colour is blue, he likes Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam, singing, dancing and baking cakes with his Mummy. His T-Shirt says it all, this is Sam Shaw.Despite fighting Neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of childhood cancer, Sam reflects positivity, bravery and courage making his fight against his illness all the more poignant.
Unfortunately for Sam, to have a chance at fighting the disease he needs to go to America for treatment, which will set his family back £250,000.
His mum, Christine, worked in the Admin department at Pendle Leisure Trust’s head office in Colne, so when her former colleagues heard the devastating news, they desperately wanted to help.
Some leisure staff didn’t know Christine personally, but putting themselves in her shoes – and a lot of them being parents themselves – they want to do their bit.
For the last few weeks, individuals at the Trust’s head office at Colne Town Hall have been baking cakes and cooking curries. Other staff at the leisure centres have been taking part in sponsored events and challenges and there are still lots of fund-raising events planned, including a charity concert, family pool inflatable fun day and a treasure hunt.
In total, Sam needs £250,000 to pay for the treatment and associated costs. The therapy he needs is not available in the UK and will not be funded by the NHS.
Christine said: “All we want is for Sam to be given the opportunity to beat this terrible disease and have the best chance of survival.
“We are asking everyone to give him a chance of life by helping us to raise the money needed to get Sam to America by early Summer.
“I’m pleading with everyone to do whatever they can to give our little boy the chance to grow up.”
Anyone wanting to help Sam can buy a wristband, costing just £2, from all of Pendle Leisure Trust’s facilities in Nelson, Colne and Barnoldswick, or donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/SamShawAppeal
