PENCIL SHADING EXERCISES
•Start by shading the area you wish to be dark and slowly build up the tone.
•As you work towards the light, gradually ease the pressure on your pencil until you can no longer see the mark it makes.
•You then patiently repeat this process, building a depth to the shading, adjusting any irregular areas and trying to keep the tonal changes as smooth as possible until you achieve the intensity of tone that you desire.

Solid Shading
Make a value scale with solid shading as shown above:
Shading can be used to create the illusion of space and form in a drawing
Graduated ToneMake a value scale using graduated
tone as shown:
Below are some more exercises of increasing difficulty which will test your shading skills to the limit.
Copy the shading of the top box into the box below it.
Stippling is a drawing technique in which areas of light and shadow are created using nothing but dots
Make a value scale with stippling as shown above:
Make a value scale with crosshatching as shown above:
Crosshatching is an extension of hatching, which uses is the use of fine parallel lines drawn closely together, to create the illusion of shade or texture in a drawing.
A drawing technique in which areas of light and shadow are created using random lines, shapes, or scribbles
Make a value scale with random marks as shown above:
Hatching is the use of fine, parallel lines drawn closely together, often rapidly drawn, to create the illusion of shade or texture in a drawing.
