PenfieldWe need your help and expertise!

The recreation department has identified the expansion of our volunteer network as a major goal for 2013. We have and continue to receive outstanding volunteers who help the staff develop and administer programs on a regular basis. We are looking for even more! We are looking to create a volunteer database of individuals who have a passion to give back to their community. One of the amazing things I am always surprised to see is how many diversified talents our residents have. The department is looking to capitalize on those talents and give you an opportunity to participate in something you enjoy! There is no criteria for volunteering, just a desire to be involved. Please take this opportunity to seriously consider volunteering with the recreation department. Be on the look out as we go searching for volunteers as we develop a list of program areas where YOU can assist.Thank you! Chris Bilow, Recreation Director

Director’s MessageThe summer of 2013 promises to be an exciting and fun time of year! As you will soon see, this brochure is packed full of entertaining, healthy, engaging activities. The staff of the recreation department has been busy planning a full summer schedule so be sure to enroll in a class or stop by the amphitheater this summer for an entertaining concert!

It’s hard to imagine that I have been director for a full year already! In just one year we have moved forward with several key areas for the department.

Our Five-Year Master Plan was completed with a very committed volunteer committee and that plan will help the department for the next five years.

The creation of the new recreation website - www.penfieldrec.org. The new site is easy to navigate and is a great resource for what’s happening in the department.

We have successfully updated our department mission and vision to include the emphasis on wellness programming. We have also adopted a department slogan - Be Active, Be Well, Enjoy Life! - and I hope you adopt the same motto in your personal life. Get the most out of life and just live (some good advice!).

As the department’s staff works toward another successful year, I hope you and your family become a part of the recreation experience at Penfield Recreation. I am lucky to have such a dedicated staff who work diligently to provide the best opportunities for the residents. Thank you to Steve, Pam, Sabrina, Linanne, Carol, Christine, and Paula for a great first year on the job; I am excited for many more!

- Tony LaFountain, Penfield Town Supervisor -

The Great Penfield Spring Clean Up

Wellness has been a common thread in my discussions on all aspects of town operations over past year. This includes the wellness o f t own f i nances , expanding community v o l u n t e e r i s m , sustainable practices,

the vitality of local businesses, and beneficial community partnerships.

At a time when the economy is volatile and residents must control spending and cut household expenses, it is important for local government to do the same. Penfield’s 2013 Budget marks the fourth year our town tax rate has been held flat. Government—at all levels—must reduce costs and cut spending.

Volunteerism continues to grow across this great community. Individuals, families and service groups give back in countless ways to community organizations, agencies, and faith groups. Did you know more than 125 residents volunteer on the many boards and committees that support Penfield government and its citizens?

Sustainability is a current buzz word and there are many notions of what it means. To me, sustainability means meeting the needs

of today’s generation without compromising future generations and their ability to meet their own needs. We must preserve open space, provide access to alternative energy and reliable water quality, ensure public safety, and foster economic independence.

Business vitality is a cornerstone of every community. I make it a point to remind residents that investing in Penfield businesses is an investment in our community. We all should value our relationship with local businesses. Together, we strengthen our community and enhance the quality of life for all Penfield residents.

Because no single entity can meet the needs of an entire community, effective partnerships are critical and must continue to grow and expand on all fronts. As an example, this year I have enjoyed working with Dr. Stephen Grimm, the new Superintendent of the Penfield Central School District. We are working on projects that have already benefitted residents and will continue to do so. I look forward to continuing this government-school partnership.

Another major component of wellness is what follows in the pages of this brochure. Our Recreation Department, under the leadership of Director Chris Bilow, continues to look for programs, activities and events that meet the needs of residents of all ages.

PenRec offers programs for health and wellness, recreation, team sports, personal growth, education, social activities, and so much more.

I encourage you to view all of our summer offerings. Be sure to register early for summer day camp, one of our most popular programs. You can save 10% on day camps by registering online. The Penfield Amphitheater & Kiwanis Stage programs are always a hit with “Cool Jazz,” “Kids Fest,” the Wegmans Music Fest, and of course, “Tastin’ the Blues.” And once again, the Penfield Public Library has outdone itself with scores of adult, teen and children’s summer programs.

I look forward to an exciting summer filled with great programs for all Penfield families. I hope to see you out and about at one of our community events. Please stop me to say hello and offer your ideas as to what we can do better to serve you.

Auditions for the Pulitzer Prize play Picnic by William Inge will be held on May 22 at 6:30 PM, Penfield Community Center. Visit YOHP’s web page at www.penfieldrec.org for details. Cast of 11 (7W/4M).

Picnic by William Inge August 16 & 17 | 7:30 PM | Penfield Community Center | $10 adults, $7 students The play takes place on Labor Day weekend in the joint back yards of two middle-aged widows. The one house belongs to Flo Owens who lives there with her two maturing daughters, Madge and Millie, and a boarder who is a spinster school teacher. The other house belongs to Helen Potts, who lives with her elderly and invalid mother. Into this female atmosphere comes a young man named Hal Carter, whose animal vitality seriously upsets the entire group. Hal is a most interesting character, a child of parents who ignored him, self-conscious of his failings and his position behind the eight ball. Flo is sensitively wary of temptations for her daughters. Madge, bored with being only a beauty, sacrifices her chances for a wealthy marriage for the excitement Hal promises. Her sister Millie finds her balance for the first time through the stranger’s brief attention. And the spinster is stirred to make an issue out of the dangling courtship that has brightened her life in a dreary, minor way. Winner of a 1953 Pulitzer, Picnic is noted to be an American classic for every generation.

Gatsby Through the Lens of the 21st CenturyF. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has inspired dramas, musicals, operas, movies and even video games. Published April 10, 1925, the book foreshadowed the upcoming Wall Street crash of 1929 which began America’s great depression. Initially less popular than Fitzgerald’s previous novels, Gatsby reinvented itself over and over and is now often cited as one of the greatest novels in the English language. Copies were sent to troops during World War II and as recently as 2012, Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman described America’s current economy with an effect he dubbed “the Great Gatsby curve.” Come hear and discuss the evolution of the Gatsby story.

Mr. Lincoln: The Life of Abraham LincolnDescription of the course from the Great Course web-site: What made Lincoln great? What was it about him that struck those who knew him? This course explores those questions with the help of an authority who, in his own words, has “spent many years trying to get to know this man from afar,” and in doing so has become one of the country’s most distinguished Lincoln scholars and an award-winning author for his books about Lincoln. Professor Allen C. Guelzo will lead you on “a great adventure,” a tour of Lincoln’s life, from his forebearers’ arrival in America through an evaluation of how his legacy lives on for us today. You will come to know Lincoln through the eyes of those who knew, lived with, and worked with him.

#343662-A 6/24 - 7/29M - 11:00 - 12:30 PM (6 classes) Penfield Community Center Free (participants must register to attend) Mr. Lincoln has been made possible with the support from

Mark Twain’s definition of a classic book is “A book which people praise and don’t read.” However this course defines the American classic as a monumental account of the American experience. They are authors and titles that have some how shocked, de-stabilized or changed the scope of American society. To truly understand the United States of America you must explore its literary tradition. We bring you this epic series (84 lectures) beginning with The First American Story, Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography and eventually concluding with Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Here is the opportunity to gain some familiarity, as well as review the great works of American writers that you may already know or never had the time to read. Participants are asked to read the essential readings before attending the class as it will lend reference to the selected lectures. We will begin the series with an Introduction to Classics of American Literature which will help participants get a feel for what the future programs will entail.

Below are our first set of dates and titles for the program.

Ralph Waldo Emerson & Henry David ThoreauClassics in American Literature continues with this six week series of Emerson and Thoreau. The Emerson lectures will call upon several essential essays “Self Reliance”, “Experience”, “Nature”, “The American Scholar”, “Circles”, “The Oversoul”, and “The Poet”. The lectures will offer a perspective on Emerson and his drive to lay claim to an original American literary voice. An understanding of his liberated values and destabilizing ideas will offer the modern reader an insight into the 19th century America and the underlying cultural agenda pulsating within. The Thoreau portion of the series will address Thoreau’s most celebrated living experiment Walden. We will see how his politics are reflected in the nature of his writings, how he has come to represent an environmental prophet and a blue print for contemporary civil rights. Following each presentation facilitator April Roods will lead the class in group discussion as you analyze and refer to the selected texts.

#343662-D 7/11 - 8/15Th - 2:00 - 3:30 PM Penfield Community CenterFree (participants must register)

PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN

@ Penfield Public Library 2013Children’s Summer Reading Game

The reading game begins Monday, June 24, and runs through Wednesday, July 31. You play once a week on:

Mondays, 6:00 – 8:00 PM, orTuesdays, 2:00 – 4:00 PM, or Tuesdays, 6:15 – 8:15 PM,

or Wednesdays, 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM, or Wednesdays, 3:30 – 5:45 PM

To play, you need to contract with the children’s librarians to read at least 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week (children who are not yet reading can be read to). We fill out the contract when you come to register. Child must be present to register. You will also receive a special reading game bag with our official reading calendar! Every DAY your contract is met; you earn a coupon that can be redeemed for prizes at our prize table. Each WEEK when you come to play the game, you get one roll of the dice to advance on the game board. For each WEEK your contract is met, you earn an extra roll of the dice. You will also earn a raffle ticket to enter our weekly prize drawing. And if you follow the special directions on certain squares, you can earn EVEN MORE raffle tickets. Come in to play each week and pick up a DIG INTO READING bonus activity card! Do the activity each week to earn EXTRA COUPONS!! This summer we will be participating in a town-wide effort, led by Water for South Sudan, Penfield, to dig a well in Africa. Not only will your reading earn prizes, your efforts will help bring fresh clean water to families who desperately need it.More details to follow.

*OR…REGISTER the first time you come to play the reading game during any of our regularly scheduled reading game times. Just keep track of all the reading you do beginning Monday, June 17. Write it down and have your parents sign it. We let you use that towards meeting your contract the first time you play the game. Many thanks to the Friends of the Penfield Public Library, the Penfield Rotary Club, and the many local businesses that are providing prizes for our summer reading program.
