WHAT IS PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION (PFD)?PFD is a term used to describe pain and disruption of bladder, bowel and/or sexual function due to restrictions of the muscles and nerves of the pelvis and pelvic fl oor.

Pelvic fl oor symptoms can include one or a combination of the following: urinary (leakage, urgency, hesitancy), bowel (constipation, incontinence, rectal pain), sexual dysfunction (dyspareunia), and/or pelvic fl oor pain.

GENERAL SYMPTOMS OR CONDITIONS INCLUDE:• Coccyx or Pubic Bone Pain• Constipation• Interstitial Cystitis• Irritable Bowel Syndrome• Pain / Weakness Following Cancer Treatment for Various Pelvic Organs (ovarian, cervical, bowel, bladder, etc)• Painful Intercourse (Dyspareunia)• Pelvic Organ Prolapse (Bladder, Rectum, etc)• Pregnancy and Post-Partum Pain• Pudendal Neuralgia• Rectal Pain• Urinary / Fecal Incontinence• Urinary Urgency / Frequency • Vaginal Pain• Penile or scrotal pain• Prostatitis

HOW DOES THERAPY TREAT PFD?Treatments include manual (hands-on) techniques, biofeedback to train pelvic awareness, relaxation and/or strengthening exercises of pelvic fl oor muscles. Other therapeutic modalities may be used to relieve pain and help restore pelvic stability and function. Personalized therapy techniques are provided in the comfort of private treatment rooms. We treat men, women and children with pelvic health dysfunction and pain.

PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION AND PREGNANCYThe pelvic fl oor muscles must withstand greater strain due to weight gain and growth of the baby. During childbirth, these muscles are greatly overstretched and weakened. Increased pressure and weakness of the pelvic fl oor muscles may lead to incontinence. Strengthening the pelvic fl oor and lower body during pregnancy and after delivery may prevent incontinence. Benefi ts of pelvic fl oor strengthening during pregnancy: • Helps support growing uterus and other pelvic organs • Allows relaxation of pelvic fl oor for easier childbirth • Helps improve perineal circulation to decrease chance of hemorrhoids • Helps decrease the chance of urinary stress incontinence or prolapse of pelvic organs • May help episiotomy and/or lacerations heal faster Our therapists at St. Dominic’s can help you learn proper body mechanics to prevent back pain and adopt exercises to strengthening pelvic fl oor muscles. St. Dominic’s has therapists who are specially trained to treat your pelvic health issues.
