Still drawing crowds today, the musical's 1956 Broadway production was a momentous hit, setting a record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. It was followed by a hit London production, a popular film version, and numerous revivals. It has been called "the perfect musical".

January Luncheon January 11, 2017; Quail Creek CC; 11:30AM; $30; PBWL MEMBERS ONLY

Bar available, credit cards only…no cash Norma Jean Broeman; [email protected]; 239-431-7766

DEADLINE: JANUARY 4, 2017

We are all fascinated by stories about the Mafia, the Mob, gangsters and organized crime. Our speaker,

John Pollok, was an attorney for many of these colorful figures, including one of the most notorious in our

lifetimes, John Gotti.

Pollok, a Naples resident, represented many of these mobsters, starting in 1967. He will share his

experiences with us and give us some insights as to the workings, both technical and psychological, of

some of these gangsters.

As to the question of "How can you defend these known criminals?" Pollok has an answer: "How can I

defend someone if I know they are guilty? The answer is because guilt is a moral concept. I'm not

interested in moral concepts. I'm interested in guilt as a legal concept, and that only happens when a jury

finds my client guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. My job is to make sure the government plays by its own

rules to convict."

Pollok has made his presentations through FGCU Renaissance Academy with a 2 day class and now the

Pelican Bay Women's League is honored to have him tell us "All About the Mob."

Our menu is a plated Caesar Salad, followed by an entrée of Four-Cheese Ravioli a La Vodka with

Sundried Tomato, served with baby carrots and asparagus. You’ll enjoy a dessert of Vanilla Bean Ice

Cream with Raspberry Float, topped with Whipped Cream, garnished with a Chocolate Tuile…all served

in a Champagne Flute. Our meal includes Coffee, Tea and Soft Drinks.

Directions: Rt. 41N; Right onto Immokalee Rd. Go 4.3 miles, staying in left lane. Turn left onto Vale

Wood Drive. Your destination is 1.8 miles on the right side.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH GROUPS

OPEN TO ALL WOMEN RESIDENTS OF PELICAN BAY COMMUNITY OUTREACH is our designation for some of the PBWL former Interest Groups whose purpose is to reach outside of Pelican Bay. Their activity positively impacts the greater Naples community and beyond. We’re very happy to have them represent the League in these important ways. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PB KNEEDLERS Jeannette O'Connor, 594-8179; Lois Sabatino, 598-2369, [email protected]; Hallie Devlin (593-1353) The League-supported Pelican Bay Kneedlers, always welcome others to join this creative and satisfying group. If you are accomplished, that's wonderful, but don't worry if you can't knit or crochet. We have patient master craftspeople who love to teach! Just come to the Community Center on Thursdays between 10AM and noon to join this good-natured group who enjoy helping others. We knit, crochet and quilt wheelchair blankets for our Wounded Warriors recuperating in VA hospitals throughout the country, having given these deserving men and women more than 3,000 so far. While this is our major patriotic goal, we also make prayer blankets and shawls for nursing homes and hospitalized patients, and for outpatients undergoing dialysis in Naples. We have fun creating finger puppets and other toys for needy children and knit and crochet hats, mittens and scarves for youngsters. We recently created these items for the more than 200 children whose town was leveled by a tornado as winter set in. Chemo patients appreciate hats we give them, and we make other items as needs arise. DONATIONS OF YARN, NEEDLES AND PATTERN BOOKS ARE VERY WELCOME AND NEEDED. THANK YOU!

SONGBIRDS Pat Pollok, [email protected]; Dianne Russell, 325-8749, [email protected]

The Pelican Bay Songbirds will be spreading Holiday Cheer via our December performances at local facilities. We are seeking a few new members to join us for our Spring Season, which begins with our Thursday Jan. 5, 2017 rehearsal. You don't have to audition, but you should enjoy singing in three or four part harmony with a group. First and Second Sopranos as well as Altos are encouraged to join us at our concerts, held at local retirement homes and assisted living facilities, as well as the Community Center. Rehearsals will be on Thursday mornings, from 9:30 to 11:30 am, at Chateaumere Royale, 6000 Pelican Bay Boulevard, November through April. The New Year will bring us a new Music Director, Doug Williams, who is well known in the Naples community, having performed at local restaurants in addition to leading a number of choirs and vocal groups. Our musical repertoire is long on standards from the Great American Songbook, along with classics, from Shenandoah through Country Road. If you have a song in your heart and would like to share it, come to our first rehearsal or contact Pat email for additional information.
