“2 A Word From Our Pastor

On November 11, the United States of America recognizes all those brave men and women who have served in the military. On November 11, 1918

at 11:00 AM, World War I officially ended with the signing of the armistice. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as “Armistice Day” to recognize all veterans of World War I. In 1953, the holiday was changed to Veterans Day and we continue to observe the date annually. On November 14, in all three services we will honor all veterans. Our guest that day will be evangelist Tim Lee, a Vietnam war veteran who lost his legs when he stepped on a land mine. We will honor all veterans, but will give special recognition to those who served in Vietnam. Tim Lee has a message for America and we will gladly hear him. Please invite all your friends and relatives, and especially those who

Veterans Day Recognitionserved in Vietnam. We will take up a love offering for Brother Tim to help him reach America for Christ. He goes around the country speaking in schools, churches, camps, veterans organizations and in crusades calling people to come to Christ. You will be blessed by his story. To all who serve — “Thank you, thank you, thank you for your devotion to our country!” I love you, I love you, I love you. God bless you and God bless America!

Bro. MikeP.S. On Nov. 14, please bring gently used winter apparel for “3 hots and a cot” that helps homeless veterans.

Dr. Mike ShawSenior Pastor

Dear Dave, My husband lost his job a few months ago. He’s found another one since then, but we’re still trying to rebuild our finances. At the same time, our daughter plays softball on a travel team. It’s a great character-building experience, but the costs involved can be pretty high. Do you think we should cut down on the travel team activities for a while? NatashaDear Natasha, You’re right. Playing sports can be a great part of the character-building process. But she can learn character lessons playing in a softball league at your local park. She doesn’t have to travel all over the place to learn those kinds of things. If you have kids, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to spend some money to help encourage their hobbies and interests. That comes with the territory, and it should be a fun and rewarding experience for everyone. You just have to take a look at your financial situation—and the kid’s desires and abilities—and make sure it’s a reasonable amount of money. In your situation, playing on a travel team right now is a luxury. You don’t

need to be footing the bill for hotel rooms and gas and stuff while you’re trying to get back on solid ground financially. Chances are, this child is not going to make a living playing softball. Even if she is that good, she can still sharpen her skills in a home town league until you guys are back on your feet. I’m not opposed to kids playing on these kinds of teams per se. But you can’t allow the cost and time involved to undermine the needs of your family or blow your budget! Dave

Dear Dave, Should you skip vacations when you’re getting out of debt? Also, once

you’re debt-free, is there a rule as to what percentage of your income you should use on vacations? CarlDear Carl, I think you should put vacations on hold while you’re trying to get out of debt. My family and I didn’t go on vacation for nearly 10 years while we were getting out of debt. Why? Because we had work to do! We had bills to pay and kids to feed. That’s just the way it goes sometimes. I’m not sure that there’s a specific percentage involved on vacation spending. It definitely shouldn’t damage your financial foundation, or put you back into debt once you’ve worked your way out. You don’t touch your emergency fund to go on vacation, and you don’t stop funding your retirement or saving money so the kids can go to college. You just save up, and pay cash! In most cases, this kind of plan will almost force your vacation spending to be a reasonable percentage of your income. Dave

The Counselors’ CornerUnder the Influence

How difficult is it to walk in the Spirit? If you walked in the Spirit, would you be different? Have you tried God and found that it didn’t work? Have you asked for help in changing bad habits but to no avail? Does it seem that you keep failing? What is it exactly that you have tried? Do you believe God’s word? If so, then do you know what He has promised to every believer?

This I say then, walk in the spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 (KJV)

This is a powerful scripture full of great meaning and promise. The intent is that we should occupy our mind with the things of God. Every believer is to have a mental disposition that is fully occu-pied with and focused on God. In doing

so, God has promised that we will not perform the longings of the flesh, that is, the things that are forbidden. Do you think it is impossible to be God focused all the time? If so, then you believe that God has asked you to do the impossible.

The forbidden things include adultery, fornication, impurity which can be physical or moral, extravagance, waste-fulness, recklessness, self-indulgence and corruption. It also includes sorcery, idolatry, hatred, jealousies, selfish ambi-tions, envy, wrath, hostility and mur-ders just to name a few (Galatians 5). Self-indulgence can include over-eating, smoking, drinking, pornography or anything that can be excessive or addic-tive. Read through this list and I am sure that you will be able to see at least one thing, if not three or four things that oc-cupy your mind. When you consider the amount of time that any of these things

occupy your mind, it is no wonder that it seems impossible to do anything other than to fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

God commands His children to crucify the flesh by replacing the forbidden things with the things of the Spirit. You “must decide” to commit to yourself and to God; to die-to-self every day. This is no easy task. It is a daily process and a daily walk. One day at a time, one min-ute at a time. And if you mess up, praise God there is forgiveness and you get a chance to start over. Every time you die to self, the flesh becomes weaker and the spirit within you becomes stronger. You are working toward no longer being un-der the influence of forbidden things, but rather under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Working out your own salvation is a life long process. Give Thanks

Wow, The Awakening Was great! Thanks for your support and to our staff for making things happen. Many of the people in my little world have changed. I’m excited and expectant to see what God is going to do next. If you are interested in discipling/mentoring one of those who made a decision, let me know. Donnie Sisk

Student Winter RetreatPigeon Forge, TennesseeDecember 27-29 We will be attending Phil Waldrep’s Connect Student Conference. This year has a great lineup including: Toby Mac, Third Day, Jeremy Camp, Shane and Shane, David Nasser, Ryan Dobson, Jeffrey Dean, and Jason McLeod. This will be a great conference for your student to attend. It’s too late now for the early-bird rate. The late cost is $150.00. We still have some space left.

DiscipleNowNovember 19-21, 2010 We still need a couple of leaders, homes, food, and volunteers for D’Now. Cost is $30.00 per person. D’Now is a weekend retreat in which our students stay in the homes of our church members. Groups are usually 10-12 students and they will sleep on the floor. Houses with multiple bathrooms usually work best. Students will take part in sessions in the homes, haverecreation at the church, and do something as a family group. If you would like to volunteer, call Donnie.

Have we forgotten God?

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were pro-duced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole of the American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. —Abraham Lincoln, 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Children’s Ministry

Senior Adult Ministry

Dear Senior Adults,

October was busy, but buckle your seat belts for another busy month in November.

First, our Senior Luncheon is November 9. It’s a covered dish luncheon. Bring your favorite Thanksgiving food. We will celebrate a little early this time.

Second, remember: Operation Christmas Child’s Shoebox target date is November 14. We need 1200 shoeboxes from our church family. I know that our Senior Adults will do our part. Each one of us needs to fill 2-3 boxes. Remember, every box goes to a child who will receive the Gospel presentation. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if hundreds were saved because First Bap-tist Church of Pelham filled boxes with items that not only blessed a child, but changed a life? You can know where your box goes by going online and paying for the shipping. You will receive a number that you can put on your box for tracking.

Third, remember we go to Atlanta to work at the Samaritan’s Purse Distribution Center on November 29-30. Mark your calendar. We will probably leave on Sunday afternoon, November 28. We’ll work from 12 noon until 4:00 PM Monday and Tuesday. I’ll give you specifics (times and approximate costs) at the senior luncheon on November 9.

Fourth, The Gaither Homecoming Tour will be here Friday, December 10, at the BJCC. All tickets are pre-paid and we will prepare adequate transportation to get you there and back. Bus will leave FBCP (upper parking lot) at 6:10 PM. Concert begins at 7:00 PM.

Fifth, let’s begin to pray for the Christmas program, that God will use it for His glory.

For His Glory, Bro. Paul

CHEERGIVERSHomebound & Nursing Home Ministry Many of FBCP membership are not aware that we have this ministry, so I would like to introduce it at this time. We began ten years ago. At the present time we visit 33 people in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and those who are homebound. Some of these precious people taught Sunday School or worked in the church most of their lives and are now unable to do so. We do not want them to be forgotten. We visit them in the name of Jesus and representing FBCP. We take them small gifts and DVDs of our church services. At Easter and Christmas we do special projects to take them special gifts. They are: Byron and Shirley Johnson Dean Black Gerri Basic Eddie and Janet Thomas Dee Dee Strickland Merlene Bohannon Rick and Kathy Speorl Faye Brannen Linda Crocker Jeanette Owens They all do a fantastic job and love what they do. You must have a genuine love for the elderly to do this. I promise you it is a true blessing. I once heard on Dr. Dobson’s program that 80% of people put in a nursing home never have a visitor. If you feel led to join us we always need help and consistently need your prayers. If you have someone in your immediate family (spouse, mother, father, daughter, son, brother, sister) or any member of FBCP who would enjoy our visits, please call: Jeanette Owens (664-9700) or Eddie and Janet Thomas (620-1810).
