  • UPEI Open Chess Tournament A small turnout for this year's event - but there was good competition. Fred McKim took 1st place with

4/4 while 2nd place went to Arnab Kundu with 2.5 Zihe Fu was Top Under 1400 and Ivan Wang

    captured Most Improved.

    Fred McKim 1-0 Ivan Wang

While there is nothing spectacular about this Round 1 encounter, what is noteworthy is the ability of

my 9 year old, 1000 rated opponent to stay in the game as long as he did. Well done, Ivan.

    1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 (Standard setup of the main line Queen's Gambit Declined) Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5.

    Nf3 h6 6. Bh4 Nc6 7. e3 0-0 8. a3 dxc4 9. Bxc4 Nd5 10. Bxe7 Ncxe7 11. 0-0 Nxc3 12. bxc3 Bd7 13.

Rb1 Rb8 14. Re1 b5 15. a2 f6 (This move id suspect when White has his White square Bishop and all

    of the major pieces still on the board) 16. e4 Qc8 17. e5 f5 18. Qe2 Nd5 (allows White to break

    through) 19. Bxd5 exd5 20. e6 Be8 21. Qe5 Bc6 22. Nh4 Qd8 (black eventually cracks under pressure)

    23. e7 (and white wins 5 moves later)

    UPEI Fall Quick Chess Tournament

Peter Turner and Fred McKim tied for 1st place in the final event of the year. J.P. Robichaud and Dave

Burchell tied for top under 1400 and Most Improved prizes went to Ivan Wang and Ankush Gowda.

    Peter Turner 1/2-1/2 Fred McKim

    Qe2 cxd4 11. Nxd4 e5 12. Nf3 Qc7 13. Be3 Nbd7 14. Rad1 Nc5

    15. Bxc5 dxc5 16. a4 Ra7 (This is a silly move, but forced after I

had picked up my Rook with the intention of going to c8, but

then noticing my a6 pawn would fall)17. Bc4 Bc6 (still in shock

over my previous move, I somehow forget the Bishop is

    protecting the a6 pawn) 18. b3 Nh5 19. Bxa6 Nf4 20. Qc4 Ne6

    21. Nb5 Bxb5 22. Bxb5 Nd4 23. Nxd4 exd4 24. Rd3 Qe7 25.

    Bc6 Kh8 26. Bd5 f5 27. Rf3 fxe4 28. Rxe4 Qg5 29. Rxf8+ Bxf8

    30. g3 Re7 31. Rxe7 Bxe7 32. Bf3 (The position peters out to Bishop of opposite colour ending and

White only having an h pawn left on the K side and the inability to move any of the Q side pawns)

    Draw in 15 moves

  • Upcoming Events Register now for UPEI Jan 18 & 19 Chess Weekend!

Our next UPEI Chess weekend starts 4 weeks from tomorrow. Register now to ensure you don't incur a

    late fee.

    UPEI Winter Quick Chess Tournament - Sat, Jan 18 - G/30 - 5 games - CFC Rated

    http://mcc.devastation.ca/upeiwqck20.html

    PEI Blitz (Open) Championship - Sun, Jan 19 - G/5 - 18 games

    http://mcc.devastation.ca/peibl20.html

Pre-register by Sun, Jan 12 to avoid late fee. This helps ensure we have sufficient equipment on hand

for the tournament and helps with publicity. If your plans change, just drop me a line so I know you're

    no longer coming.

Community Events 2020 Maritime Chess Festival

(Oct 9-12) Credit Union Place in Summerside is hosting the Maritime Chess Festival again this

Thanksgiving! The main event will be the Maritime Open, but there will be the same complement of popular one day

events as last year: Blitz, Junior, Amatuer, & Senior.

Check out all of the details at: http://mcc.devastation.ca/mcf20.html

As was the case last year, pre-payment of registration will save you on the various entry fees, but the

first deadline isn't until June 30, so there is a lot of time.

What we would like, though, is for players planning to participate to pre-register so we can keep a close

watch on our expected turnout, especially now that we have a baseline from 2019.

A special thank to the NB Chess Association for allowing us to take their turn at hosting the 2020

Maritime Open and to Chess NS for returning this year with their Digital Equipment.
