Peggy Noodle, Hula Hoop Queen is a fun story about a little girl who’s new in town, and has to start over at a new school and with making new friends. This sweet story deals with stereotypes and assumptions, light peer pressure, self-confidence and empowerment, positive influences, and making good choices. Whether you’re a classroom teacher or a parent, or just a reader of children’s literature, there’s an easy lesson to be discovered. What made you focus on children’s literature? I love the idea that enriching children’s literature can help young readers to identify issues that may stick in their own minds, and figure out how the characters in their books work through them. There’s a definite positive correlation to learning how to cope with life and bumps in the road. Self-confidence is an interesting topic. Why is it important for children to learn about? For more than a decade I worked or volunteered for a handful of non-profit agencies that focus on the human condition—specifically in women’s rights and empowerment, HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and hunger—where most folks have had to overcome tremendous stigma, and have seen firsthand how important it is to develop a strong foundation of self-esteem and self-confidence at a young age. Growing up is hard; it’s even harder when you’re an adult. Why did you set Peggy Noodle in 1957? My mother was born in 1948, and I have always loved for her to tell stories about when she was younger. Although there were struggles with Civil Rights and women’s rights were just becoming an important political topic, some things seemed much simpler then. I’ve also been fascinated by Hillary and Norgay’s ascent to the top of Mt. Everest and Sputnik, and that whole era, so I knew Peggy Noodle would find a fine home in the 50s. How did you connect with illustrator, Monica Wyrick? Monica has been a family friend for over a decade; in fact, we were with her when she found out that she would be illustrating for the famed Audrey Penn, and the Child Welfare League of America. I knew that Peggy Noodle’s focus on self-confidence and empowerment would be a good match for Monica, and was thrilled when she said yes. Plus, Monica’s whimsical illustrations captured the vision of the story and really brought the characters to life. Can we expect to see more of Peggy Noodle? Absolutely! Peggy Noodle, Hula Hoop Queen is the first in a planned series. Keep an eye out for Peggy Noodle’s next adventure, Breakneck Beatnik, where we’ll meet her new friend, Pete, the soapbox derby racer. Who is your favorite children’s author? I love Virginia Lee Burton’s Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, and Calico the Wonder Horse; and Jonathon London’s Hep Cat. Junie B. Jones is one of my favorite literary characters ever. For older readers, I love Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series and James Patterson’s Maximum Ride series.

Our book launch celebration and HOOPLA! on February 11, 2012 was a huge success. It was held at the Halle Cultural

Arts Center in downtown Apex. Over 200 people attended, over half of whom competed in the HOOPLA! We sold 75

books, and signed for an hour. Our next HOOPLA! will be on March 31 in Raleigh, at NOFO at the Pig. We are also in

the planning phases for HOOPLA!s in Asheville, NC and Aiken, SC.

Accompanying special events like a HOOPLA!, hooping demonstration, or hoop making session, are great ways to

increase awareness and sales. Plus, they’re fun, inexpensive, and a great way to showcase talent local to you. I hope
