The World Buskers Festival finished yesterday and last week children from east Christchurch took centre stage, becoming part of the acts.

Gemma Sitjies and Lily Derrick of Burwood and New Brighton were picked out of the crowd to help out the performers.

The large crowd did not deter seven-year-old Gem-ma who said she was not afraid when she was picked to go up on stage.

She said her favourite part was the prize she received afterwards – a balloon ani-mal in the shape of a dog pushed through a slice of bread.

At the Market Square stage in the Arts Centre, seven-year-old Lilly Derrick was asked to top a three-person tower for buskers The English Gents.

Lily jumped on stage to replace her sister Greta, who backed out after decid-ing she had stage fright.

“It was not scary. It was kind of like being on one of the tunnels at school that you can stand on,” she said.

The girls were plucked from a crowd of more than 100 people to be a part of a routine by The English Gents, one of the acts in this

year’s World Busker Festival.Coincidentally, the

girls were members of the Christchurch School of Gymnastics and had been practising their acrobatic skills only days before.

Performer Zane said so far the festival had been been fabulous.

“We had a hilarious one last night [January 18] when we got the men up – and they all looked exactly the same, with big beards and all. Except one of them was

in woman’s pants – we don’t quite know why.”

He said the way to pick people from a crowd was “a bit of an art.”

“We go for smiley people. The way to go is to feel you’re not likely to get picked. We want people who will be comfortable,” he said.

His counterpart and brother, Degge, said it payed to be prepared.

“Trying not to get picked will just get you picked,” he said.

BY KYLE KNOWLES AND GABRIELLE STUARTThe Pegasus Post is today calling for the city council to get tough on squatters in the Beresford St car park in New Brighton.

City council staff revealed to the Pegasus Post on Friday they can take steps to trespass the squatters.

But the council appears to want to a take a softly, softly approach.

They have decided to put up No Camping signs in a bid to “educate and inform” people they are not al-lowed to camp there.

The Pegasus Post says this is a joke - and people living near the camp agree.

They have had enough of squat-ters using bushes nearby as a toilet and the late night noise.

The car park has also become a beacon for young local Brighton people looking to party with the squatters.

The city council and the Bur-wood-Pegasus ward councillors - Glenn Livingstone and David East - must be bold and lead the move.

And the Pegasus Post can also reveal today many of the people camping in the car park are not ‘freedom campers’.

They are staying there for weeks at a time and have jobs in the city.

They are similar to the squatters who lived in Hagley Park near the hospital a few years ago.

erations manger Paul Burden said no time frame was in place for the No Camping signs to go up but it was a priority.

“Signs will be in English and will remain up for the foreseeable fu-ture. Costs and placement are yet to be determined,” Mr Burden said.

“Our freedom camping offic-ers and other council staff will be monitoring this site and requiring anyone who is freedom camping in the car park to leave.

“Should these people not leave on request, we will look to utilise the provisions of the Trespass Act

to gain compliance.”So the Pegasus Post asks - if the

city council has freedom camping officers and can take trespass ac-tion why haven’t they?

Residents have been complain-ing since Christmas.

Says neighbour Kylie Stenberg: “If they can be trespassed I don’t know why they (council staff) wouldn’t (do anything).”

Mrs Stenberg said she didn’t think the squatters would be al-lowed to stay in other parts of Christchurch like they were in New Brighton.

She was upset about the noise and rubbish left behind.

“It’s so nice people in the com-munity have swept up the glass, but it shouldn’t be up to the com-munity.”

Mrs Stenberg said campers did not go to the car parks on the fore-shore because there was a liquor ban and they were locked at night.

She was aware that some of the Beresford St campers had jobs, in-cluding one who worked at a para-gliding school.

They were using the car park be-cause it was rent free.

New Brighton Acting Senior Ser-geant Dave Robertson said he was hoping the city council would take some action and put signs up.

Police don’t have the power to move the squatters on but can take action if an offence is committed or council seeks to trespass them.

“The local residents are entitled to have a bit of peace and quiet and as police we support the council and any action they take.”

overnight area in New Brighton, maybe in Rawhiti Domain, with toilets and a dump station for campervans, but described that as a long-term solution, which would have to be approved in the long term plan and would take months.

“I don’t have a problem so much with freedom camping but traditionally it has been done away from business and residential areas.

“I think (freedom camping)

is something that will be more prevalent as time goes on.

“We need to actively discourage the camping in those car parks right in the centre of New Brighton. Thompson Park, Marine Parade and even the ramp aren’t so bad because there are toilet facilities that can be used.”

He said the issue was a new one in the area.

“If it was there before it’s a lot busier than it was. I suspect that has something to do with social media promotion.”

So Derek, tell me a bit about yourself.

I grew up in North London. I travelled to New Zealand in 1988 and stayed in Hawera in Taranaki, for a while and my wife and I knew we wanted to come back. We moved over in 1999 and spent about a month in Auckland, a month in Wellington and then came to Christchurch. We spent about a month in each and Christ-church won. It is very peaceful and a good place for a family. God didn’t tell us about the earthquakes but we’ve survived.

And I understand you live in Mt Pleasant, how long have you lived there?

We rented for a year in Mt Pleasant when we first came to Christchurch. We’re up on the hill. My wife Louise had got work and I’d got work and there was no way she was going to get off the hill, she loves it too much.

Tell me about your family.Louise is a doctor and we have

three kids aged 17, 15 and 13. My two eldest girls were born in England and my youngest son was born here in New Zealand.

So what do you do for work?

I spend three days a week work-ing at Statistics New Zealand. I’m a statistician so that bores people at dinner parties and I am also a property investor so I buy houses and do them up. It keeps me busy a couple of days a week. And then there is the theatre company, we’ve been running Top Dog for about 12 years and this will be our eleventh Summer Shakespeare Festival.

You started Top Dog Theatre, how did it come about?

We did our first play in 2002, it was a Steven Berkoff and it was successful so we thought ‘lets do another one’ and I just formed a company. We just have fun, it’s a non-profit organisation and we put on one or two shows a year. I don’t have a theatre or premises or anything. We just do what we want to do. Some of the stuff I do maybe

others don’t want to do it because it’s too risky because it is open air theatre, where we perform outside.

So what made you want to get into theatre?

I have no idea really, maybe meeting people. I don’t think I was one of those people who say they are born to act. I went and saw plays and gradually started taking it seriously. I thought it just looked like fun and you meet a lot of people. I’ve been directing for about 20 years now. I had my first full-length play that I wrote per-formed in Lyttelton at The Loons theatre when we arrived in New

Zealand. We’ve really suffered for venues after the earthquakes, the things we used to take for granted, but it’s coming back now.

Tell me about the Summer Shakespeare Festival.

We’re doing Macbeth and there is a superstition behind Macbeth, apparently in the theatre you’re not allowed to say the name of the play, you have to call it the Scot-tish play. It’s just one of those old wives’ tales. It’s very hard for me because I’m doing it in the open air so where is my theatre? We don’t want to play with it, you’re just so scared you just go through touching wood, we’re definitely

respectful. We’ve got a great cast of 25. It’s one of Shakespeare’s shortest plays and I’ve cut it by about 20 per cent. We perform outside at Mona Vale and this is our first non-comedy. We’ve done 10 comedies but someone said “how would you do something else?” So we thought sod it we’ll do Macbeth.

And how are rehearsals going?That’s the kiss of death telling

you that! We’re working hard. We have a 10-12 week rehearsal period and it’s always the tricky bit with three or four weeks to go.

where no one can look at their scripts, and that’s when every-thing falls apart. But we’re on track. We rehearse on the Mona Vale lawn where we will be per-forming.

Why did you choose Mona Vale gardens?

I started an open air theatre company back in the UK. That is what I specialise in and that’s what the Summer Shakespeare Festival is. The beauty over there is you have all those castles and buildings and that’s what we used to perform in. We don’t have that here so I picked Mona Vale, it’s al-most like a natural amphitheatre. I found it about 13 years ago and we’ve stuck there ever since, it’s just so perfect. We put up a bit of a set but you’ve just got to go with the audience’s imagination.

So what is it like performing outside compared to inside?

It is very different, all micro-phoned. It’s very large and we might have 400 to 500 people in the audience so sometimes you can’t tell who is speaking because it comes out of the speakers. So it’s much more physical, you’ve got to make sure you immedi-ately catch the audience’s eye so they know who is speaking. The weather is also a factor.

What do you do when it is raining?

I usually make a call at 6pm, if we’ve got 250 people in their rain gear ready to watch the play we

will do it, it has to be pretty bad for us not to go ahead. We’ve got no lighting so as long as it’s not dan-gerous it can rain in the middle of a performance and we can push on through. The worst we’ve had has been three called off, and the best we’ve done is the whole bloody lot.

What has been some of the biggest hiccups you have had while working in theatre?

Years ago when I was playing a role in a production I just walked on and thought ‘I have no idea what I’m meant to say’ so I went onto a speech that I was meant to say later. Then I realised what I was actually meant to be saying and I said “well enough of that, I’ll tell you that later”. You have some technical issues like people forget-ting to turn their microphones back on when they go on stage. I once had an actor who went off stage and forgot to turn his micro-phone off and said “I was f***ing hopeless tonight” and we thought ‘oh my god his microphone is still

on!’ That was pretty awful. We’ve had actors and actresses slip over on the grass at Mona Vale. They end up on their bum but the audience love it. You’ve just got to laugh it off.

Have you had anyone come down with illness before a show?

Oh s*** yeah, that’s just something the public don’t know about. We have tricks to sooth the throat. One is to gargle red tawny port and rest it at the back of your throat and spit it out, but you’re going to perform so you don’t want to drink it. We just have to battle through, adrenaline is a wonderful thing.

What are some of the best ways actors/actresses learn their lines?

People do it different ways, some use iPhones to record the lines and listen to them in the car. I’m a firm believer of writing them down. You cover the lines with a piece of paper and you write down what you think it is, and then check it. It is not until

you write down the lines word for word that you really know them.

So what is your favourite Shakespeare play?

One of my favourites would be Much Ado About Nothing, but The Merchant of Venice is probably my best. I have played Shylock twice, once in the UK and once here. He is fantastic, one of my favourites of all time. I also love Steven Berkoff. I’ve done four of his plays. He was a great writer in the 60s and 70s. He writes really gritty stuff.• Macbeth opens on February

11 and runs through to Febru-ary 21 at the Mound Lawn, Mona Vale gardens. The per-formances are from 6-8.10pm every night with matinees on both Saturdays at 2pm.

The 22 beams needed to build the new Gayhurst Rd bridge are being installed.

Residents and walkers around the Avon River in Dallington might have noticed some heavy lifting equipment operating in recent days.

SCIRT’s McConnell Dow-ell team is installing about five bridge beams per day. A crane has been installing the south side beams this week. It will take about three days to dis-mantle the 180 tonne crane and move it to the north side of the river to do the second half.

The heaviest of the beams weighs 24 tonnes, the lightest only a little less.

Each individual beam is pre-tensioned before the concrete is poured. The beams have voids or gaps that allow them to be joined together when in posi-tion. The beams are then pulled together so that they are locked in place to form a complete span of the bridge deck.

Site engineer Tom Angus said the new bridge, being so well constructed and engineered, will be able to carry heavy traf-fic, whereas the old one had a three to five tonne limit.

Work started in April last year and was anticipated to take about 14 months to complete. It is currently on track for the bridge to reopen in June.

New Brighton Olympic Athletic Club came home with two gold medals from last week’s Colgate Games.

The Rawhiti Domain-based club also picked up a bronze and a silver across the three days.

New Brighton’s gold medal-lists were Meredith Seeto in the 400m and Marshall Rayne in the 12-year-old 1200m track walk.

The silver went to Max Hill-Cattermole in the 11-year-old 1200m track walk and the 12-year-old mixed medley relay team won the bronze.

The medley team was made up of Jay Hill-Cattermole, Joshua Bull, Mark Zimmerman, Meredith Seeto and Maia Keepa.

Other New Brighton athletes who had top 10 finishes included Max Ngataki, Cameron Marino, Joshua Ball, Mark Zimmerman, Quinn Andis, Scott Zimmerman and Tim Seeto.

The younger members of the club who were not competing for medals won a large number of podium finishes too.

The seven to nine-year-olds won seven gold pennants, 14 silver and 10 bronze.

Team manager Lee Ann Venis said they had a huge weekend and was very proud of all the team achieved.

The games were held over three days at Logan park in Dunedin, with close to 1000 children com-peting.

Christchurch’s other athletics clubs also enjoyed a successful weekend bringing home close to 100 medals between them.

The club with the biggest haul was Christchurch-Avon which picked up 38 medals including 11 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze.

Club captain Marilyn Morrison said she was very proud of the way her club performed in hot conditions.

“Many of these children came home with personal best perfor-mances and we can’t ask for more than that of our young athletes”.

Other winners were Phoenix with 14 medals, Papanui Toc-H, 22, University, 20 and Port Hills with 20.

A large number of roadworks start-ing or entering new phases.

• Maces RdWastewater repairs are under way

and will take another five weeks. This involves trenches being dug along the road. SCIRT will be connecting prop-erties’ wastewater pipes to the main pipe on the road and contractors may need to work within private property, owners will be contacted if this is the case. Maces Rd will is one way head-ing north between Wickham St and Taurus Pl. Detours are provided.

• Ngarimu StRepairs are being carried out on

the road and kerbs along Ngarimu St and should take another three weeks to complete. A one-way system is in place heading south towards Wood-ham Rd. After repairs are complete the other side of the road will be re-paired then finally the road carriage-way.

• Pages RdThe hump on Pages Rd opposite

pipes is being removed. The work start-ed on Saturday and will be complete on Tuesday. Pages Rd is still one way from east to west with detours in place.

• Griffiths AveThe repair of a water main started

last week along Griffiths Ave and will take around four weeks to complete. A one-way system will be in place on Griffiths Ave between Rudds Rd and Nicholas Ave for traffic travelling northbound. This will be in place for the duration of the work, resident ac-cess will be maintained where possi-ble, except within the immediate area of work. Off-street parking near the work area may not be available.

• Portsmouth StWastewater repairs start today

along Portsmouth St with a tempo-rary road closure in place. There are three stages of work moving along the street with work to start at the Wainoni Rd end with the road to be closed between Wainoni Rd and Bas-ingstoke St initially. There will also be turning restrictions in place for Bas-ingstoke St and Ben Rarere Ave into

Portsmouth St. The work is expected to be complete at the end of March.

• St Heliers CresWork on a wastewater line in St

Heliers Cres starts today and will take until mid-April to complete. A progressive road closure will be in place on the street heading south/east towards Guernsey St while work installing the mainline is under way.

• Ruru RdA wastewter main along Ruru

Rd needs to be relined but should only take another week to complete. Two-way traffic will be maintained but lane reductions will be in place around the work area.

• Warblington StA one-way system is now in place

along Warblington St as wastewater repairs take place. There is no entry from Soberton St onto Warblington St. Residents will be able to enter Warblington St from Carisbrooke St and the one-way system will be in place for about three weeks. The repairs started last week and are expected to be finished by early May.

Not just fires. This week saw nearly 50 per cent more call-outs than average.

The dry weather continues and we saw a rural vegetation fire go-ing from one metre across to 50m in a matter of minutes.

There was also a mix of non-fire

incidents attended by our crews. Fourteen ambulance assists, a handful of car crashes and 80-odd false alarms added to the mix.

Last Wednesday, Addington’s crew helped a lady whose house was flooding. Some innovative plumbing adjustment to the cis-tern’s ballcock worked in this case.

Later the same day a three-year-

old became stuck in a cat door and apparently he was very unim-pressed about the predicament. Safely removed.

On Sunday, the smell of gas in a Beckenham home was traced to rotting vegetables in the green bin, and later that day Templeton Primary School received good old Fire Service treatment when

the hot water cylinder burst and firefighters responded with our special wet vacs from the city sta-tion to assist in the clean-up.

That evening a lady in Hoon Hay was concerned that a cord that had wrapped itself in a fan might set the place on fire and Addington again went to the res-cue to untangle the appliance.

On Monday two separate calls to smoke sightings turned out to be dust from earth-moving machines.

That same day smoke from a damaged truck caused the Lyttelton Tunnel to close for two hours and rural firefighters spent the entire day at Heyders Rd in Spencerville.

An odd week in the city.

DirectionsCook asparagus and beans (both trimmed and halved) in boiling, salted water for 2 to 3 minutes, then drain and plunge into ice cold water to cool. Drain well. Arrange asparagus, beans and rocket in a serving bowl. Scatter with cubed avocado and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle all over with lemon juice and avocado oil, scatter with crumbled feta and serve.

Going greenGreen vegetable stir fry with sesame haloumi Serves 4The key is to not overcook the greens so they keep all their anti-oxidants. Adding a little water or stock when stir-frying allows the greens to steam and cook evenly.

Ingredients2 Tbsp Sesame oil, divided1 Garlic clove, finely chopped2 Zucchinis, sliced on the angle4 Baby bok choy, quartered lengthwise100g Snow peas½ head Broccoli, medium-sized, cut into florrets3 Silverbeet, leaves, shredded½ cup Water, or vegetable stock200g Haloumi cheese, sliced into thin strips

¼ cup Sesame seeds, toasted¼ cup Sweet chilli sauce3 Tbsp Soy sauce

DirectionsHeat the sesame oil in a wok or stir-fry pan and saute the garlic, zucchini, bok choy, snow peas and broccoli for 2-3 minutes until starting to colour. Add ½ cup water or stock and the silverbeet. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes until the broccoli is bright green and tender. Add sweet chilli sauce and soy, and toss to coat the vegetables. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a shallow pan. Sprinkle the haloumi with sesame seeds, then fry for about 1-2 minutes each side until golden. Serve the greens, topped with a few slices of sesame haloumi.

Does your child suffer from asthma?The new Smartinhaler delivers results

New Zealand has the second highest rates of asthma in the world, and one in four Kiwi children experiences asthma

symptoms. Despite this, regular adherence to asthma medication is poor. However, a new smart asthma inhaler with an audio-visual function has dramatically improved child and adolescent use of preventive asthma medication. The users also experienced significant improvements to their symptoms, wellbeing and quality of life, and needed their reliever medication less frequently.

The University of Auckland study, funded by Cure Kids and the Health Research Council, showed a significant improvement in night time awakening, coughing and wheezing.

Professor Ed Mitchell, Cure Kids Chair of Child Health Research and supervisor of the study’s lead author Amy Chan, says he is “absolutely staggered by the size of the effect. To see the improvement in the lives of these children is astounding”.

The participants also reported taking part in more sports and family activities. Parents reported feeling less frightened by their child’s asthma.

New Zealand digital health company Nexus6 Ltd created a new Smartinhaler device

called the SmartTrack, which was used in the study. The device has 14 different ringtones, which are cycled so users don’t get reminder fatigue. The SmartTrack reminder is only triggered when a dose is missed.

The results were published this month in The Lancet Respiratory Medical Journal.

To the researchers’ knowledge, this is the largest study in the world to investigate the effects of an inhaler device with audio-visual reminder function on asthma adherence and outcomes in children and adolescents.

It is also the first to show significant benefits in asthma outcomes and quality of life. The results are expected to gain international interest.

The randomised controlled trial recruited 220 children between the ages of six and 15 who presented to emergency departments with asthma symptoms.

The study was random, with half of the participants receiving a SmartTrack device for use with their preventive or ‘orange’ inhaler that had the audio-visual elements turned on, and the other half receiving the same device with the audio-visual elements turned off.

Participants were followed up every two months for six months and general asthma control was checked.

Key findings from the study were:• Medication adherence rate for the patient

group given the audio-visual enabled SmartTrack inhaler were 84 per cent compared to 30 per cent for the control group. This equals a 180 per cent increase in medication adherence.

• The use of emergency medication or the ‘blue’ inhaler was significantly reduced. The median percentage days on which a reliever was used in the intervention group was 9.5 per cent compared to 17.4 per cent in the control group. This equals a 45 per cent reduction in rescue medication use.

• Symptoms, wellbeing and quality of life for the children were significantly improved.

Clinical pharmacist Amy Chan, a doctoral student in the University of Auckland, is the lead author on the paper.

“We know one of the key reasons for children not taking their medication is parent and patient forgetfulness. The Smartinhaler reminder system is now clinically proven to be a real solution to the problem,” she says.

“What we’ve been able to establish for the first time with this study is that the ringtone Smartinhaler significantly improves adherence to preventative medication, which results in improved quality of life for children with asthma. It’s hugely exciting,” says Chan.

Children in the study were also given a Smartinhaler tracker for their rescue or ‘blue’ inhaler to measure the amount of rescue medication they used. The device was able to objectively count date and time of rescue medication use. This provided a good indication of asthma being out of control.

When symptoms worsened, participants used their rescue reliever inhaler (blue inhaler), which is also known as a rescue medication because it provides immediate relief. Recent studies have shown that overuse of the blue inhaler is a predictor of worsening asthma and general morbidity.

The study found that use of the rescue medication was significantly reduced in the group using the Nexus6 Smartinhaler reminder device.

A post-earthquake trades training programme for Maori has been hailed as a success by the programme’s founders.

He Toki ki te Rika (Maori trades training) was launched by Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu in partnership with CPIT and Hawkins in 2011 to train Maori, to help meet the skills shortage for the rebuild of Christchurch and to empower individuals and their families.

The initiative, which was launched in 2011, aims to train Maori for leadership positions in construction and offers apprenticeship support and further training through leadership programmes.

Another 213 learners completed the fee-free programme in 2014. At a recent celebration ceremony Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu Kaiwhakahaere Tuarua, Lisa Tumahai acknowledged that their new qualifications were a first step in empowering them to make bold, confident choices for their future.

“Developing skills and leadership sits at the heart of all our He Toki programmes and although you may leave here today and start out on the end of a drill or a hammer, we want you to take up the challenge of working your way to the top – to becoming the foreman, the supervisor, the project manager or the company owner. The possibilities are endless.

Pasifika trade students help out

CPIT’s Pasifika Trades Training students have been putting their skills to good use, by helping to fix up damaged community

buildings throughout Christchurch. CPIT offers 100 Pasifika Trades Training

scholarships every year, helping students study subjects including painting, carpentry, furniture and joinery, general engineering and civil construction. The fees-free training programmes are part of a nation-wide initiative by the Government to get more Pasifika into trades training as well as assisting with the recovery of Christchurch.

This year, students have been involved in using their skills on a number of community projects. Among the projects was the plastering and painting of the damaged Samoan Efks Church Hall and fixing holes in the wall at the Shirley Assembly of God Church Kitchen. Further works are planned for 2015.

Centre for Maori and Pasifika Achievement manager, Harry Westrupp, says it is great to see students putting the skills they learnt in their course to make “a real difference to community projects”. “The community groups were very grateful. Many of these organisations didn’t have insurance and couldn’t afford to fix the damage.” he says.

At CPIT, the Pasifika Trades Training scheme is run in collaboration with leaders from the Pasifika community, government agencies with Pasifika church ministers playing a key role in nominating students for training and offering pastoral support. As well as learning industry relevant skills, Westrupp says the courses help students become the next generation of Pasifika leaders.

“We encourage all our students to step up and become active members of their communities,” he says. “This is just one of the ways we can show them how to do that.”

It can be a little challenging keeping up with Mat Goodman’s projects. A graduate of CPIT’s Sustainability and Outdoor Education programme

and a talented � lmmaker, he certainly has a few employment options to explore. If he’s not looking for keas in the Southern Alps or crows in New Caledonian ‘cloud forests’, then he’s � lming relocated kiwis or more lately Hector’s dolphins in the Marlborough Sounds.

Actually, keas are not hard to � nd. � ey are highly inquisitive and love to play as Mat found out while � lming a documentary produced by a German team that compared the intelligence of New Zealand’s kea and New Caledonia’s native crows (both species can problem solve and use tools to get to a reward – in this case, food).

� e visuals of the birds and the landscapes are stunning, and the � lm is both entertaining and informative. But behind the scenes, there is obviously a lot of work involved in reaching remote places and getting the right shot.

For Mat, an underlying motivation in helping to make these documentaries is to educate people about nature and sustainability. � is motivation developed while he was studying at CPIT.

“� e programme certainly changes your lifestyle and allows you to be content with the way you are living,” he says.

Dr Jane O’Malley, the chief nurse at the Ministry of Health, is a CPIT graduate. Jean O’Callaghan, another graduate and former chief executive of the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB), is now chief executive of the Dorset County Hospital NHS Trust in the UK.

Closer to home, graduate Rekha Devi is a facilities manager at Cornwall Park Hospital in Auckland, while William Jones is a post anaesthetic care nurse for CDHB, and Olivia Sanders is a paediatric nurse at Christchurch Hospital and Rochelle Pereiro is a registered nurse at Pegasus Health in Christchurch.

Pererio says she learns something new everyday. “� ere are so many di� erent jobs you can get with nursing,” she says. “If you like working with children, you can specialise in paediatrics or if you like research you can go into that area. I like that you’re not stuck in one thing.”

Aoraki Polytechnic’s hairdressing programme is a cut above the rest and gives its students the con� dence and practical skills

they need to give themselves a foothold within the industry.

Second year student Jade Mason (28) heard about the polytechnic’s hairdressing course through a friend and decided to apply as it would give her the skills she needed to move into an industry which had always interested her.

Jade completed the polytechnic’s Certi� cate in Hairdressing (Level 3) in 2013 and began her second year of training in 2014 through the polytechnic’s Certi� cate in Professional Hairdressing (Level 3).

During her second year of study, she began working at Tangles Hair Design on Saturdays and has earned herself a full-time job at the salon in 2015.

Jade said when she was not cutting, colouring or styling in the studio, she was kept busy as a mother to her three-year-old son.

With a little one to look a� er at home, she believed a course suited her schedule better than an apprenticeship, which became part of her reason to enrol at Aoraki.

Jade said she loved the atmosphere of the course as it had “built up (her) con� dence” to work on the necessary skills needed to ply her trade as a hairdresser.

“I’m very self-motivated to be here,” she said.
