An overviewn PeerAssistedStudysessions(PASS)isa
schemethatisintendedtofostercross-yearsupportbetweenstudentsonthesameProgramme.Itencouragesstudentstosupporteachotherandlearnco-operativelyundertheguidanceofstudentsfromtheyearabove.
n PASShasfivemainaimsanditisintendedtohelpstudents:
–Integratequicklytouniversitylife –Gaininsightintotherequirementsof
theirprogramme,andtheirlecturers’expectationsfromtheperspectiveofamoreexperiencedstudent
–Improvetheirlearningandstudyskillstomeetthedemandsoftheirprogramme
–Enhancetheirunderstandingofthesubjectmatteroftheircoursethroughcollaborativegroupdiscussion
–Preparebetterforassessedworkandexaminations
n Afterreceivingtrainingthemoreexperiencedstudents,calledPASSLeaders,facilitateweeklystudysupportsessionsforgroupsofstudentsfromtheyearbelow.
n PASSsessionsareintendedtobeplanned,structuredandfriendly.InPASS,theemphasisisoneveryoneinthegroupworkingco-operativelytodeveloptheirunderstanding.PASSisthereforeaboutexploratorydiscussionleadbythePASSLeaders.Themoreeveryonejoinsinthesediscussions,thebetterthesessionswork.
n ContentforPASSsessionsisbasedonexistingcoursematerials–hand-outs,notes,textbooksandsetreading.

Basic Requirements of PASSn InordertoruneffectivelyPASSrequiresthe
supportandinvolvementoftheProgrammeacademicteamandadministrativestaff
n OnememberoftheacademicteamandtheProgrammePASSContact,willneedtomeetregularlywiththePASSLeaderstoguidethem,providethemwithcoursetimetablesandassignmentbriefs,andobtainfeedbackfromthem
n PASSworksbestwhenitappearsasanormalpartofthestudent’slearningactivitiesandistimetabledattimesstudentswillfindconvenientie,immediatelyafteralecture
n PASSLeadersaretrainedintheirrole.Thisinvolvesaninitial3modulesofgenerictraining,withfurthersessionsbeingusedtoprovidedisciplinesupport,resources,shareexperiences,academicsessionsandconsolidateoraddtotheirskills

Roles and ResponsibilitiesToenablePASStooperateeffectivelytheProgrammePASSContact,teachingteam,PASSCo-ordinatorsandPASSLeadersmusthaveaclearpictureoftheirrolesandresponsibilities.GoodpracticeinthedeliveryofPASSindicatesthatthefollowingshouldbeinplaceforPASStosucceed:

theProgrammeandmeetsthemregularlyevery2-4weekstodiscusshowPASSisprogressing
n ReportsonPASStoProgramme/SchoolCommitteesandactsasalinkbetweentheAcademicTeamandthePASSLeaders
n LiaiseswithProgrammeAdministratorstoensurethatPASSsessionsaretimetabledandtakeplaceatsensibletimes,forexample,immediatelyafteralecture
n EnsuresthatinformationaboutPASSisvisible.ThiscanincludeinformationintheProgrammeHandbookandpromotionoftheschemeduringOpenDaysandthroughtheDepartmentorSchoolwebsite
n InvolvesPASSLeadersinProgrammeinductionsothatnewstudentsaremadeawareofPASSandhaveachancetomeetwiththeirLeadersatanearlystage
nEnsuresthatPASSLeadersknowwhattheirstudentsarecurrentlystudyingbyprovidingthemwith:
–Teachingschemes –Assignmentschedulesandbriefsn AdvisesandhelpsPASSLeadersto
preparetheirsessionsn LiaiseswithPASSCo-ordinatorsover
recruitmentarrangementsfornewLeaders
Programme staffTimedemandsonstaffshouldbelow.PASSismostsuccessfulwhenviewedbyallpartiesasaninclusiveandenhancementactivity,ratherthanreplacementorremedial.TheteachingteamcansupportPASSinthefollowingways:n Encouragestudentstoattendtheir
PASSsessionsn Suggesttopicsorissuesthatstudentsmay
wishtodiscussduringtheirPASSsessionsn ProvidetheProgrammePASSContact
withcopiesofteachingschemesandassignmentbriefs
n ThroughtheProgrammePASSContact,indicatetoPASSLeadersanyspecificpointsoradvicetheywouldliketheLeaderstopassontotheirstudents
StaffmayalsowishtoconsiderwhetherthereanyactivitiestheywouldlikecoveredinPASSsessions.ThesemayinvolvethereviewofProgrammematerials,oractivitiesaimed
atreinforcingunderstandingorpreparingstudentsforaforthcominglearningexperience.
PASS Leaders: work in pairs ton PlanandorganiseweeklyPASSn AttendtheinitialPASSLeaderTraining
courseand,whenpossiblefollow-uptrainingwiththePASSAcademicLeadsandCo-ordinators.SuchsessionsareintendedtoenableLeaderstopractiseandconsolidateskills,andprovidethemwithresourcestousewiththeirstudents
n PlantheirPASSsothattheyarestructuredyetfriendly,andincludesmallgrouplearningactivitiesthatwillenablestudentstoreviewsubjectcontent,practiseessential/studyskillsoranalyseassignmentrequirements
n FacilitatePASSsessionsbyencouragingstudentstohelpeachother,engageincollaborativediscussionsandshareideas
n EncouragestudentstotakeresponsibilitytodecidewhatistobediscussedinPASSandbyagreeing,inoutline,aprogrammeoftopicsfordiscussion
n KeepsintouchwithstudentssothattheyareawareofwhatistobediscussedintheirnextPASSsession
n LiaiseswiththeirProgrammePASSContact,Co-ordinatorandotherLeaders
PASS Co-ordinatorn MonitorsandoverseesthePASSprogrammen Providesapointofcontactforstudentsand
staffconnectedwithPASSn ProvidesinformationtoSchools/
