Welcome to our summer newsletter. As always it is packed full of reports, photographs and news items that reflect the range and variety of learning experiences our young people have been engaged in during this term.

Our students delighted parents, friends and PTC staff as they arrived in luxury cars galore, looking so classy in their prom gowns, cocktail dresses and sharp suits. Students posed for photographs with friends and family outside and enjoyed a warm and barmy evening dancing and socialising with staff and peers. David Lloyd staff commented on the good behaviour of our students again this year, making PTC proud. Many thanks to all parents, carers and PTC staff that helped make this event so successful.

WelcomePTC

PTC Prom - our student leavers show they’re a class act!On Thursday 25 June our Year 11 Prom was held at David Lloyd, Brierley Hill.

We invest a great deal of time in supporting our students in preparing for the next stage of their education. As you will see from this newsletter we have organised a number of visits to colleges and employers to ensure our students have the right information, advice and guidance to enable them to be successful post-16. Staff and students have visited Halesowen College, King Edwards VI College, Sandwell College and University College Birmingham; we have also had visits into school from Doosan and a group of students participated in a live webinar with Marks and Spencer.

Year 7 students have participated in our annual Medieval Banquet this term. The project began with a visit to Dudley Castle to conduct research and culminated in a wonderful morning that included music, textiles, history, food technology and dance.

‘The Big Bike Challenge’ also visited Pedmore and spent the day putting our students through their paces on quite a challenging course.

One of the highlights of the term was when we were visited by renowned wildlife photographer Doug Allen. His presentation and work with the students was fascinating and we were

delighted to be able to invite students from local colleges and primary schools in for the day to share this experience.

A host of other events have taken place and I hope this newsletter gives you a flavour of the vibrant atmosphere our staff and students share on a daily basis. Other highlights this term have included the ‘Making Music’ event, the TSET Bake Off and our extremely popular computer programming event - Pedmore Jam.

Finally we were pleased to receive a visit from the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Sajid Javid MP, together with Margot James, MP for Stourbridge. The visit took place as a follow-up to concerns that we shared with Margot regarding the issues around Music and Drama provision under the government’s new curriculum changes. The visit was very positive and enabled our Year 8 students to display their musical talent too.

I hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter and appreciate the new, more environmentally friendly and economical format. Thank you once again for your continued support for the school and the work we do in developing our young people.

Students got off to a racing start today as they took part in the BigBike Challenge. Mountain biking coaches from BikeRightUK bought bikes and a mountain bike loop “pump track” and coached the students in mountain biking techniques as they faced the challenging track obstacles.

The sun shone again this year as PTC descended on the Dell stadium in Brierley Hill to compete in traditional track and field events in a morning of sport.

The day was made possible by funding from Centro’s £48m Smart Network, Smarter Choices project which aims to encourage more sustainable travel for people to work, leisure, shopping and education, achieving economic growth in

a low-carbon way.

Ben Clarke, a member of BikeRightUK’s

mountain bike coach team said,

“It’s great to see children

For the first time, students competed in their house teams, Wyvern, Phoenix and Griffin. Students were encouraged to try their hands at sports they had never tried before as well as those they felt they excelled in. A closely fought competition but the overall winners of the day were Wyvern. Well done to everyone for taking part and having a go at new sports.

come to the sessions with set expectations relating to the mountain biking experience and to have these totally challenged and have good fun at the same time. Seeing their confidence grow in just one session, makes our job so worthwhile”.

Mrs Moore, PE teacher here at Pedmore and organiser of the challenge said, “We are really delighted that Pedmore students have had the opportunity to experience this exciting sporting challenge. We encourage our students to adopt a healthy lifestyle with lots of physical activity and to challenge themselves with new experiences. The coaches were terrific and gave our children the confidence to really push themselves further”.

On Friday 24th April our Year 7’s took part in “Making Music Matters”. This innovative workshop was created by 3rd year Music degree students from The University of Wolverhampton.

The workshop aimed to introduce children to different aspects of music in an interactive, participative way so that all children could learn something new about music and the music industry during the workshops. Students had a great time and found their musical talents as they joined in with singing lessons, a singalong and drumming and percussions workshops. They also took part in music quizzes. Mrs Hart a member of the team said, “It’s been a really successful day. The activities were varied and gave all the students an opportunity to have a go as there was something for everyone”.

Year 9 GCSE Photography students recently visited Stourbridge Town centre with Mrs Tromans and Mrs Turner to capture the essence of the Black Country in the 21st century, responding to the work of Magnum photographer, Martin Parr.

Students were required to take photographs of local landmarks, shops and the town’s people. These photographs were taken in the genre of street photography, capturing activities in action from everyday life. Mrs Tromans said, “The walk gave the students a great opportunity to capture a wide variety of images that show the many faces of our local area. Students worked on composition and taking photographs with varying degrees of light and movement”.

Doug Allen, who has been part of the crew on TV programmes such as The Blue Planet, Planet Earth and Frozen Planet, visited on Friday May 8th.

The BAFTA and Emmy award-winning wildlife cameraman, photographer and author spent the whole day talking to students about his career, photography, life experiences and his new book Freeze Frame. A group of pupils from our local primary school, Hob Green and Photography students from Halesowen College were also invited to come and meet Doug and hear the renowned snapper’s stories.

Miss Wright, ILC manager and organiser of the event said: “It’s been a really inspirational visit and the students and staff were amazed by Doug’s images and fascinated by his stories and career to date. Members of our Year 9 GCSE photography group were particularly excited to have such an outstanding wildlife photographer to talk to and pick up tips.”

Following Doug’s visit, Year 7 and 8 pupils have been involved in a writing competition to win a signed copy of Doug’s book ‘Freeze Frame’. Pupils were invited to choose one of Doug’s wonderful photographs, and to respond to the image in writing: entries included poems and descriptive pieces, and the quality and range of the work produced was excellent.

Ten entries were selected from the many entered, and these were sent to Doug so that he could choose the final winner. The finalists were: Gemma Smith, Anyia Dudley, Ella Brettle, Emily Huffer, Fareha Somra, Samaira Hussain, Iqra Amjad, Tom Pegg, Edward Symonds and Owen Brevitt. Doug was incredibly impressed by the pupils’ writing and sent his own response to

Top wildlife BBC cameraman visits PTC - students meet Doug Allan

We were very excited to welcome an award-winning BBC cameraman and photographer to PTC recently to share top tips with budding young snappers.

‘As I read the stories and poems, they did the marvellous thing that good writing does – they took me to a new place in my own imagination. They let me see new sides to the Arctic and Antarctic and the animals that live there. Some of you saw things in my pictures that I hadn’t seen before.

What comes clearly shining through in all of them is the imagination of all you writers. Some of you reacted to the lovely quiet beauty of a scene, others wanted the excitement of the hunt, or a close encounter with a dangerous animal.

In the end I chose as the winner, the story by Gemma Smith. I thought it had a lovely calm and peaceful beginning, and I could really feel what she was seeing. Then the mood changed completely, which was a great way to hold my attention.

The two runners up… I loved the poem by Anyia Dudley and how it turned in the final lines to a plea for us to look after the planet better. And you know how important that is for me.

Ella Brettle’s story was beautifully simple, and felt very personal. She described what some people would think was a horrible scene, but she did in a more low key, thoughtful kind of way. I just felt there was a kind of magic in her story and how she told it.’

Well done to all pupils who took part in the competition, and special congratulations to runners up Anyia Dudley and Ella Brettle, who received Waterstones’ gift vouchers, and to the overall winner Gemma Smith who received the prized copy of ‘Freeze Frame’. Despite his busy filming schedule, Doug also sent a special personalised card to all ten finalists, which they were delighted to receive.

A wonderful author visit, which has really inspired the imagination and writing of PTC students!

Mrs Thomas and Mr Maflehi completed their second year of a Counselling course, NCFE LEVEL 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills at Halesowen College attending evening study sessions.

The qualification will help PTC ensure that we have professional and qualified staff to help our students with problems they may face during their time with us.

Both members of staff are looking forward to going back in September to start their 3rd year and work towards the Diploma in Counselling qualification.

On Saturday we opened our doors to the general public to host a free event focussed around the Raspberry Pi computer and more. We had a wide range of visitors from enthusiasts (who have developed gadgets and applications using the Raspberry Pi) to families and individuals interested to learn all about them and other computing skills such as Minecraft etc. Ages ranged from 7 to 70+ and everyone had informative, fun and hands-on experience.

The event is the second of its kind for PTC. In January this year, we hosted a two day computing festival “Jam Packed” which attracted visitors and technology experts from far and wide (featured in our Spring newsletter).

Mr Hanif, organiser of the event and teacher of Computer Science at Pedmore said, “It’s been another good community event with many bringing their kit, skills and expertise to inspire and inform all our participants. These type of events help our community to begin to understand computing technology, its development and innovation and its possible applications today”.

Our Pedmore Jam was another Computing success for PTC recently. On Friday, 26th June pupils from Ham Dingle Primary School joined us to take part in a wide range of workshops from learning about LAN’s, WAN’s and networking to technology innovations and how to code. PTC’s 7:2 also joined in the workshops.

24 Year 10 students spent a day over at Sandwell College taking part in the college’s very first Secondary Schools Taster Day.

Our students moved around the college’s new campus together with pupils from another 10 Midlands secondary schools.

Students took part in various subjects such as Hair & Beauty to Nail Art and sampled other subjects along the way including Fashion Design and Social Care. Mr Smallwood, Head of House Pastoral and trip leader said, “We were all very impressed with Sandwell’s new campus and the wide variety of subjects that are on offer. These taster days allow our students to get hands-on experience and a real insight into the different kinds of Further Education establishments for them to study at after they leave us at 16”.

All our Year 9 students visited Halesowen College on Wednesday 15th July for a taster day.

Students tried out a wide variety of subjects including: English Literature, Sociology, Creative Writing, History, Psychology, French, Spanish, Geology, Environmental Science, Archaeology, Catering, Travel and Tourism, Law, Business, Computing (programming, hardware and digital graphics), Sport, Animal Care and Public Services.

A small Year 10 group elected to attend a taster day at King Edward VI college in Stourbridge in July.

This first taster day focused on Biology, Chemistry and Geology. After a brief in the impressive lecture theatre, the group attended a hands-on biology lesson testing urine samples!

After break, they were solving a crime with forensic experiments in Chemistry and finished the day with a fascinating Geology class. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their experience that gave them a real insight into the sixth form college and an opportunity to meet and talk to staff.

This day was followed by two more taster days attended by more of our Year 10’s; one that focused on Maths, Accounting and Business and the second that focussed on Psychology, Sociology and Law.

Our Year 10 GCSE Catering students visited UCB recently for a taster “Waiter” Day.

Student Morgan Parry gives her review of the visit:

On 5th June my Catering class had the opportunity to participate in a UCB taster day where we delivered food to members of the public. We worked alongside the students from the college and learnt how to work in a restaurant. Throughout the day we had over 60 people to serve, our roles pushed us to our limits and showed us a side to ourselves that we didn’t know we had! The students guided us in our allocated jobs and helped us perform to our full potential. During the trip we learnt about the management of a restaurant and how important teamwork is in a work environment. My class and I really enjoyed the trip and would go to the restaurant again to help with different jobs to further our knowledge.

Our jobs consisted of serving the food to the customers, runners, wine waiter, someone to take people’s coats and make them feel welcome to the restaurant and someone to take drink orders. I passed the food from the kitchen to the different stations so it could be carried to the customers. This job was tiring and difficult but gave us the experience to help cater for a big party. I found the job really hard as I was on my feet for a long period of time, and I didn’t realise how heavy the trays were!

In the restaurant the staff were strict but friendly and helped us all day. They made us feel welcome. If we did this again it would be good if we could try different roles in the restaurant as this would give us a different perspective on how a restaurant works.

Mr Smallwood and Mrs Turner visited employers Doosan Babcock recently, being invited to explore their apprenticeship programme and how PTC can work with the employer to raise awareness of opportunities in the Engineering sector.

Doosan Babcock is a specialist in the delivery of engineering, aftermarket and upgrade services to the energy sector.

Billy Motram, Doosan’s training manager gave a presentation explaining the company’s established apprenticeship programmes and case studies of successful young apprentices working for them. He also gave a guided tour of the Dudley factory. Doosan is a large international organisation that work with multi-million projects all over the world. As a result of forming this relationship, Doosan will be delivering workshops to PTC’s Year 10 and 11 students in September to tell them all about the sector and what careers Doosan can offer them. This will be followed by the opportunity for parents and students to meet Doosan representatives at our Careers Fair Evening on 1st October. Students will also be taking part in Doosan’s industrial Taster Day.

Another great link made for our students with prestigious employers based in the West Midlands.

20 Year 10’s had an exciting and free opportunity to help them begin to understand the kinds of careers that large organisations can offer them in the future.

We were invited to take part in an online workshop with Marks and Spencer on Wednesday 13th May 2015.

The workshop lasted for 50 minutes and consisted of a short video from Marks and Spencer followed by a one to one Q&A for our students to speak with M&S. In a similar Class Careers workshop ran with Sky TV, a student was hired and he will be beginning his role later this year once he has completed his A-levels! The M&S workshop aimed to achieve the following aims:

• Inspire our students to work harder during the exam period

• Advise our students to make stronger and more informed careers choices

• Raise our student’s aspirations and confidence levels by connecting them to a prestigious brand

Students also researched the different types of career opportunities available with the retail giant from Store Managers, Food Technologists, Logistics, Head Office and Human Resources related roles and more. They also learnt about the various routes into a career with M&S and its Student Leaver Scheme and Graduate Entry.

Mrs Turner, and Mr Smallwood, organisers of the event were really impressed with the enthusiasm of our students to partake in the workshop and their conduct and professionalism in the Q&A sessions. Mrs Turner said, “It was a good opportunity for our students to be introduced to the types of careers large organisations can offer and the different kinds of entry paths open to them after leaving education at 18 and beyond. The students were surprised at the sheer variety of professional roles on offer and definitely had their assumptions about this employer challenged. The students enjoyed being able to ask direct questions to the recruiters. It was a real bonus to their Careers Education programme. Many thanks to Class Careers for inviting us to take part”.

On 1st July, 14 Year 10 GCSE Product Designers attended a special event at the Black Country Living Museum, “Manufacturing at Work”.

Students and staff meet with regional employers offering apprenticeships and work opportunities in their businesses. These included;

Rimstock - a West Bromwich based manufacturer of high end aluminium wheels for racing cars

Thomas Dudley - manufacturers of bathroom products and iron castings, based in Dudley

Phoenix Calibration and Services Ltd - testing and bespoke design, manufacture and support of machines and control systems, based in Brierley Hill.

A trip to Thomas Dudley and a viewing of the foundry was an interesting experience on the hottest July day on record!

After lunch (where most sampled the famous Black Country Museum chippie), students attended a workshop about 3D printing and it’s application in the future - thought provoking stuff indeed.

Mrs Hunter, Subject Leader of DT and trip organiser said, “This was a great opportunity for our students to meet a wide range of employers from the manufacturing industry to learn more about the sector and the types of work they can offer. Being able to meet the apprentices of some of these businesses too to get first-hand information has been invaluable.”

Year 10 students had the opportunity to meet employers from a wide variety of sectors at Halesowen College’s Work Related Learning Morning on 24th June.

Students and PTC accompanying staff attended workshops delivered by employers and specialists from all kinds of occupational sectors. These range from nursing staff from Russells Hall Hospital exploring NHS Careers to DJ Simon Wilson from Stourbridge’s Bridge Radio discussing careers in broadcasting, teaching specialists, the Fire Service and Public Services lecturers and also staff from Birmingham City University to explore Higher Education. Many thanks to Halesowen College for inviting us to this event.

year 7’s Biscuit Company Success

SeCreTAry of STATe AnD mP viSiTS PTC

During a Food Technology module, students in 7:4 took part in an exciting enterprise project. Students formed small companies of 4-5 and were set the challenge of producing their own biscuit company.

They were given a budget of £5. All students were given job roles and they took these very seriously. There was a Managing Director, Financial Controller, advertising and marketing and all students were involved in the making process. Ingredients, time and the use of the food room facilities were all costed and students also had to decide on the selling cost of the biscuits to make a profit. All companies advertised the launch of their biscuits and a grand sale was announced. We were pleased to say that all students were successful in making a profit. The profits they made were converted into the companies requests for treats!

Mrs Condlyffe and Mr Fenn were delighted with the enthusiasm and commitment the students demonstrated. Mrs Condlyffe added, “This project has been a really good experience for our year 7 group. It has helped the students gain a better understanding of job roles within a company, how to cost effectively to help achieve a profit and how important team-working can be”.

Sajid Javid, formerly Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Stourbridge’s MP Margot James, visited our school recently as Ms James wanted to showcase Pedmore’s “commitment to music, arts and other enrichment activities” to Mr Javid.

She said: “I was delighted to welcome Sajid Javid to Stourbridge. I know how important the arts are to a well-rounded education, and so it was very useful to speak to Headteacher Mr Lloyd about the impact of school league tables on lessons of this kind. We also had the opportunity to observe a Year 8 music class, and Sajid was very impressed with both the teaching and the students.”

Mr Lloyd said, “The opportunity arose following the NUT Education Question Time event that was hosted by PTC on Monday 20 April. Several participants expressed concern at the ‘squeezing out’ of the Arts from the curriculum due to government accountability measures such as the EBacc and the new ‘Progress 8’ . Margot James contacted the school to

see if we wanted to meet with the Culture Secretary to discuss how this issue was affecting students at Pedmore. Although it was a whistle-stop visit, we were able to share some of our concerns and, by visiting a Year 8 music lesson, Sajid and Margot were able to see first-hand some of the talented students we have at our school.”

In May all our Year 7 students went on a visit to Dudley Castle.

This trip was part of a project involving several departments including DT and History and Performing Arts. Students had a fantastic time discovering all about this time period, touring the ground and castle throughout the day. The learning that took place helped towards the castle project in History (see separate article) and the Medieval Banquet preparation of food, costumes and decoration of our hall.

Our Year 7’s tried their hand at building and architecture recently making models of castles!

They used their research from the Dudley Castle trip earlier in the term and created some amazing pieces of work. Miss Walker, teacher of History said, “Our Year 7 students never fail to astound us with the quality of their creations and the castles that were created this year were the best ever!”

year 7’s have a

experience

Our Year 7 students donned tunics, hoods, wimples and bonnets as they joined in the celebrations at this year’s Medieval Banquet.

After a trip to Dudley Castle, making model castles, researching and creating medieval bunting and shields to decorate our hall, costumes, tasty pastries, bread and drumsticks they experienced a full-on medieval occasion! This was made extra special by the entertainment; a medieval doctor brought along his gruesome implements and entertained the students with

tales of his patient’s ailments and how he thought he could cure them. Our students also got to perform for the event after they had been practising their medieval dancing and music making for several weeks to give polished performances at the banquet.

Year 7 students had a fabulous time, immersed in the medieval experience, an event that has got better and bigger every year since it started in 2011.
