So What’s the Problem

• Do we have the level of law enforcement that we want? Need?

• Why won’t law enforcement engage more?

Fact:• “Most cops didn’t get into law enforcement

to make the world a better place for pedestrians and bicyclists.”

• “The police receive little if any pedestrian or bicycle-specific training.”

• “The police are not engineering or education experts.”

• “Cops don’t enforce laws they don’t know and that they can’t defend.”

Getting Law Enforcement to Engage

• Fortunately, cops already know how to be Cops &

• They want to help people…

• They just need to learn more about pedestrian & bicycle safety

Training is Key!

• A single training effort doesn’t seem to be enough to engage law enforcement

• Instead, a multi-faceted continuum of training, implemented over time, seems to be more effective.
