Setting up a classroom:You need:•Enough desks/tables (and chairs) plus at least one or two extra•Shelves•A gather area with chair for you and chart stand ( chart paper, markers)•Bins/magazine files for books/papers•Covered bulletin boards•Books ( levelled – JK – 4/5) fiction & non-fiction•Art supplies ( crayons, paints, brushes(mixed),sponge brushes, sponges, buckets, bowls, egg cartons, yoghurt pots, rolling pins, glue, stir sticks, tongue depressors, old magazines, toilet rolls, paper towel•Maps•Paper/notebooks•Pencils, scissors, markers•Overhead projector or document camera + projector

Preparing:•Familiarise yourself with the schools ‘First Day’ processes, traditions and expectations•Know where and when you are on duty and what you are expected to do•Make friendly contact with the staff, including the offices staff and custodians•Know where to find the things you’ll need – supplies/math manipulatives etc•Find out what random things are happening that will affect you in the first month•Be as flexible and helpful as possible•Read your students OSR’s if they are available and note those on IEP’s etc.

Have a plan for the first two/three weeks that has these priorities:

•Establish routines•Establish expectations•Assess: reading levels writing math general knowledge learning skills•Establish prior learning for your first set of foci
