Why are BTEC Nationals changing?BTEC Nationals prepare many students each year for progression to Higher Education (HE) programmes, in fact UCAS has reported that the proportion of 18 year-olds in England entering HE with a BTEC has more than doubled between 2008 and 2014. The Higher Education Statistics Agency also confirmed that the number of UK students entering HE with a combination of BTEC and A levels increased nearly four-fold in the same period.

So to ensure BTECs continue to support progression into Higher Education, we have developed new BTEC Nationals for students starting their courses in September 2016. After over two years working closely with HE, professional bodies and industry, we are confident these new qualifications are fit for purpose, delivering university applicants with the right balance of research skills, professional behaviours and up-to-date industry knowledge.

1. Human Lifespan Development

Students develop knowledge and understanding of patterns of human growth and development. In addition, they:• consider physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the life stages.• learn about factors that can influence human growth, development and human health, and about

theories and models developed to explain them.• explore the impact of both predictable and unpredictable life events, and recognise how they

affect individuals. • study the interaction between the physical and psychological factors of the ageing process, and

how this affects confidence and self-esteem.

Exam

2. Working in Health and Social Care

Students consider the roles and responsibilities of a range of workers in the sector including their accountability to regulatory bodies and the monitoring of staff when carrying out specific roles such as nursing and social work. They also learn about the organisations that provide services in this sector, and the different settings in which these services are delivered according to the needs of the service user.

Exam

4. Anatomy and Physiology for Health & Social Care

Students study cellular structure, the structure and function of body organs, energy metabolism and human genetics. They also consider how data is collected and used in medical research. They develop a more detailed knowledge and understanding of the structure, function and main disorders of the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, skeletal, muscular, endocrine, lymphatic and immune, renal and reproductive systems. Students also consider how homeostatic mechanisms operate in the maintenance of an internal environment and investigate the processes relating to natural conception and prenatal development from the point of fertilisation through to birth.

Exam

Mandatory units – a solid foundation for all learnersThis table breaks down the mandatory unit content and explains what the students learn and which skills they develop.

The larger core of mandatory content in the new BTEC Nationals means that you can be confident that BTEC qualified students are well prepared for higher level study and assessment methods.

5. Enquiries into Current Research in Health & Social Care

Students examine the different research methods that can be used to gather information and the ethical issues that need to be considered. They develop skills that will enable them to carry out secondary research into a contemporary issue. The assessment requires students to review research carried out into a contemporary issue in the sector, and carry out their own secondary research into the issue. This enables them to consider how the research findings may benefit service users or improve practice, and make recommendations for further research.

Task based external assessment

6. Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

Students consider factors that can impact on the professionals who provide the care and support, and the challenges that must be overcome to allow access to good quality care and health services. They explore the different methods used by professionals across all care services and how they work together to provide the care and support necessary to meet individual needs. This unit examines:• the principles, values and skills, which underpin meeting the care and support needs of individuals• the ethical issues, which arise when personalising care • relevant legislation.
