10. Hog Barns Don’t Come With an Owner’s Manual
Let’s Compare Investments
• $300,000 combine – comes with a detailed owners manual
• $650,000 wean-finish barn –owner’s manuals for individual items in a box in the corner

Let’s Compare Investments
• $300,000 combine – daily maintenance and seasonal preparation for use
• $650,000 swine facility – operates 24/7 and often NO maintenance
5
Life Expectancies
• Structure of the barn – 30 years
• Gating and Feeders – 15 years
• Slats - ??????
• Curtains• 3-5 yr life if lift to close
• 6-9 yr life if lift to open

Concrete Erosion
• Prevention• Spray concrete sealer around feeders and drinkers at
every cleaning - ~$40 in product for 2400 hd barn
11
9. Don’t bother leaving the lights on – the nose finds the feeder• Very limited data for 16h light at weaning
• Data accumulating on sows and boars• Dwayne Zimmerman at UNL was early researcher• Day length, lumens and wave length are all issues
• Considered red/green color blind
• Poor acuity (legally blind by human standards)
• Eyes best attuned for dawn/dusk activity patterns

What about LED lights?
• If bulbs – are they rated for enclosed fixtures?
• Definitely YES for breed-wean
• MAYBE for nursery and grow-fin• Costs are coming down
• Bulbs rated for enclosed quoted at ~$8

What is ‘normal’ energy expense?
30 farms in Iowa, Minnesota and MissouriIowa State University PM 3063E, February, 2016
8. Pigs have different taste buds than people• Humans have 25 ‘bitter’ receptors• Pigs have 16 ‘bitter’ receptors
• ‘Bitter’ • triggers CCK in gut – smooth muscles relax• feed intake decreases due to delayed gastric emptying
• Saccharine is extremely bitter tasting to pigs
• The last 10 years we’ve made great progress in pig starters – we don’t sell starters by smell any more.

7. Pigs Like Classical Music
• Hog barns are noisy
• Noise is monotonous and continuous in wean-fin• Mechanically ventilated – 73 dB average – location
dependent
• Curtain barns – quieter
• Loud fans in farrowing (85 dB) disrupt sow and piglet communication leading to disrupted nursings
• Transport – over 90 dB
6. Tickling is an effective way to get a fresh fecal sample• Better known as ‘tickling the S**t’ out of pigs!
• De-worming is a forgotten practice in swine units
• I still see roundworms in sow units
• Staying current on health prevention practices includes paying attention to the ‘old’ diseases

5. Don’t ask a veterinarian when you need a nutritionist• It takes a team of advisors to get it right
• Use your advisors – don’t be afraid to put them all into one room at the same time so you get agreement going forward
• Team members• Lender• Veterinarian• Nutritionist• Housing/management• Genetics (?)
4. If your furnace is sized properly…..• Bigger is not better!
• A furnace is big enough if it shuts off on the coldest day

3. It’s okay to be wrong, as long as you’re consistent• In research, I can fix data if you are consistently
wrong. Hard to fix if you make a new mistake each week.
• Production mistakes occur. Know what to do to get production back on track.
2. When riding with Mike in the winter, it is best to keep your eyes closed and your hands folded in prayer.
• Sounds like ownership of pigs – a wild ride!

1. Always know the answer to the question before it is asked.
• Do your homework before trying something new. Too much money is wasted because the wrong question was asked or no question was asked.
• It’s harder to find answers these days – you don’t have extension specialists as available to ‘bounce’ ideas off of.
6 Rules of Jack Welch
• Face reality as it is, not as it was or as you wish it were.
• Be candid with everyone
• Don’t manage, lead
• Change before you have to
• If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete
• Control your own destiny, or someone else will
