Transcript of PEACETALK - Peace Lutheran Church · sick there was no way anyone ... Hate and fear seem to be ......

From the Pastoral Staff… Hear, Again, the Story

rowing up, I remember

going to worship all the

time, but there was one

week that was always the

center of our family’s year - Holy

Week. We centered our meals,

homework, dance classes, work,

and school lives around worship for

Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday,

Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. I

don’t remember the specifics of

many of the worships, but I know

we were there (except for one

Easter when my little brother was so

sick there was no way anyone

wanted him around and Mom

stayed home). Otherwise,

everything stopped because Holy

Week is the center of the Christian

faith. Everything we believe centers

on the life, death, and resurrection

of Jesus. And by being part of the

worshiping community during Holy

Week, you get to know what

happened and how that changes our

lives.

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel

like I don’t know which way is up

anymore. Hate and fear seem to be

rearing their heads in terrifying and

ugly ways. People are being

targeted because of religion, race,

sex, and financial status. Grave

stones are being desecrated, bomb

threats are being made, and it seems

sometimes as though basic human

decency itself is becoming scarce.

At times like this, I need to hear the

words of Jesus, words that are

trustworthy, and full of compassion

and hope. In a world of twisted

truths, I need to know what is true. I

need Jesus.

I challenge you to take a

step in your faith journey this Holy

Week. Attend one more worship

than you did last year or than you

usually do. If possible, attend a

service each day one is held. There

is power in the passion in following

Jesus from the time he enters

Jerusalem with people waving

palms shouting Hosanna, through

the Last Supper, into the garden

where he prays and where he is

betrayed by a close friend, to the

day when he is sentenced to death

and carries his cross. Walking the

whole way in worship, together as a

community, hearing the scriptures

for each day of Holy Week makes

the power of Easter morning that

much richer, and I don’t want you

to miss a second of it.

There is a temptation to say that

we’ve heard it all before, that we

know the story. The thing is,

though, we need to hear some

things over and over again. Even

though my husband told me years

ago that he loves me, I desire to

hear these words daily. In my first

years of being a pastor, a wonderful

retired man, who was a pastor and a

urologist, was dying in a nursing

home. He and his wife had lived a

long and full life together, including

serving in Madagascar for years. He

had been so good to me through the

years and helped me learn what it

was to do the work I do as a pastor.

I remember being so frightened to

walk into his room because this man

knew and lived the Christian life

much longer than I had even been

alive, and I admired him so much.

Yet, when I walked into his room,

he needed to hear the words of

Jesus again. Sure, he’d heard them,

preached them, and lived them, but

he couldn’t get enough. Come hear,

again, the words of life and

salvation this Holy Week.

Even though this image of the sanctuary at St.

Dysmas was taken at Christmas. The

sentiment remains the same as the men walk

through the doors and down a few steps…it’s

the only place where they are called by name

and no longer identified by their worst sin

The Resurrection

Finding Light in the Midst of Darkness

Terry was a cook in the kitchen at the South Dakota Penitentiary. He had long hours, working 12 to 14 hour

shifts. He learned that right before his mother died she asked to be baptized. He started to ask what that meant.

He started attending St. Dysmas after his long hours in the kitchen and, within a few months, he too was

baptized. Grinning from ear to ear he said, “Now I will get to see mom again!”

“Many of the inmates have not had a church experience growing up and have found meaning to their life and

Christ while inside the walls,” said Joran Olson. Joran is a member of Peace and also serves as the volunteer

choir director at St. Dysmas. “Easter has a special meaning to these men as they hear the story of Lent and the

Resurrection. They will shake the rafters as they sing, ‘Christ the Lord is Risen Today’.” Because it’s a theme

they live out every time they walk into the sanctuary.

Dillon DeBoer could hardly wait to turn 18 so he could worship at St.

Dysmas. “It’s something that my parents did and something that I

always wanted to do,” he said. He attended the Thursday night

services a couple times in high school and while attending Augustana

University (formerly College). His impression since that first visit has

stuck with him. “For one hour a week they get to be men. They aren’t

referred to as a number or a unit or a cellblock. They have a name,

they’re part of a community, and they have hope, and they hear the

words of forgiveness,” said Dillon. “None of us have to be identified

as our worst sin. We don’t carry a scarlet letter around.” God calls us

all by name.

Dillon heard St. Dysmas was looking for a treasurer and he

volunteered to serve on the outside council. (The inside council is

made up of inmate members and it’s their job to set policies. The

outside council manages the budget and handles the finances.) “One

hundred percent of the funding comes from churches and outside

sources,” said Dillon. “The inmates have tokens they can use as offering and that money goes to a charity.”

Peace Lutheran supports the congregation with general fund donations. Our budget also supports a new re-entry

program and funds two-holiday meals for the inmates each year.

Dillon is involved with the Re-entry program. He says it’s a program still being developed and raising funds to

get started. It’ll be made up of a group of volunteers with different backgrounds who can help newly released

inmates get reacquainted with society and some of the technologies. “Many of these men went in before there

were cell phones, or the Internet. There’s just a whole new way of doing things now and things cost a lot more,”

said Dillon. “We will also help them find a place to live and help them find a job. Pretty much just help them

get their feet under them.” The re-entry program is short about $10,000 of its fundraising goal to hire a

coordinator and start offering services.

Josh is the Church Council President inside the wall of the prison. He said the subject of the resurrection

intimidated him. “Before I came to St. Dysmas, I felt kind of lost, kind of like I was treading water in a great

sea. I was barely able to keep my head above the water, getting more exhausted by the minute. I had no

direction, no purpose in my life, I only existed, nothing more,” he wrote.

PeaceTalk 4

He continued that finding St. Dysmas was like a lifeboat being sent out to save him. “I started coming to

services and kept my head down. I didn’t want to be noticed. I never planned on being involved with the church

at all. But God had a much different plan it seems.” He said his family noticed a change in him. He feels he has

a purpose and a solid direction in life.

“These men are the living example of Christ living in each and every one of us today, even if they live behind

the walls of the State Penitentiary,” said Joran Olson. She said you can see the love of Christ in the eye of every

hand you shake during that hour when every man has a name.

Peace takes a group to worship at St. Dysmas twice a year. Watch for announcements!

GWOH: Worship Missionaries at Table of Grace

This could need some explaining; a “worship missionary” is a way to help support

a new worshiping community simply by going to church. Our new congregation in

Harrisburg, South Dakota, can use our help during their weekly worship on

April 23rd. To help our partner congregation, we need 12 volunteers who will join

us for worship that evening. Some will be asked to help welcome and greet

worshipers, others may help prepare a simple supper that can be shared with all

who gather for worship.

Can’t make it to worship? You can still help by telling your family and friends

who live in Harrisburg about this new faith community!

GWOH: Food2You

Peace Lutheran will serve at Food to You, the mobile food pantry, on April 27th at St. John's Lutheran Church.

20 volunteers are needed to serve from 5:15-8:00pm. 5 Volunteers are needed at 4:15pm to help unload the

truck. It’s a great way to serve in our community.

Sign up online or at the Welcome Center.

Can't volunteer? Consider donating an item of the month,

for April that is cereal.

Food To You Mobile Food Pantry is a way to get

groceries and household items to those who need them on

a weekly basis by distributing them in the neighborhoods

after daytime work hours. Food to You is a ministry of

Charis Ministry Partners, a partnership of the Sioux Falls

ELCA congregations.

Thank You Peace Lutheran Church Volunteers from Project CAR --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A special thank you goes to the volunteers from Peace Lutheran Church who contributed their time and

talents to Project CAR.

You helped provide transportation for people to participate in worship service and church activities,

volunteer throughout the city, and serve as Senior Companions. You transported individuals with special needs

to their work sites and provided over 1,500 rides for health appointments. You enhanced the quality of life for

all you served.

In 2016, volunteers traveled about 70,000 miles, provided about 10,000 rides, and donated about 7,000

hours.

Please join Project CAR in thanking Bill Dahl, DuWayne Hansen, Nicole McKinney, Ken McQuisten,

and Russ Schneider for volunteering.
