AAnalyst Burner Heads cannot be used with other PerkinElmerAA Spectrometers.

Single-Slot Nitrous Oxide-AcetyleneThe 5 cm nitrous oxide burner head is requiredfor nitrous oxide-acetylene operation. Thisburner head can also beused with air-acetyleneor rotated to providereduced sensitivity.

Single-Slot Air-AcetyleneThe 10 cm burner head is designed to be usedwith the air-acetylene flame. Because of itslong burner path length, it provides the bestsensitivity for air-acetylene elements.

Three-Slot Air-AcetyleneThe three-slot burner head (10 cm) is designedto be used when analyzing samples with highconcentrations of dissolved solids. The three-slot burner head is notcompatible with someolder gas control systems.

Single-Slot Air-AcetyleneA 5 cm air-acetylene burner head (5 cm) isavailable for applications in which reducedsensitivity is required. It can be rotated toprovide further sensitivityreduction, and it has a wideslot to prevent clogging.

    tsBurner System ComponentsNebulizers

    16

PerkinElmer nebulizers are available in a variety ofconfigurations to meet all of your analytical needs.

The nebulizer is one of the most important components ina flame AA spectrometer. Sample solutions, with differingphysical properties, must be converted into an aerosol ofsmall, similarly sized droplets. This places great demandson the design of the nebulizer.

All PerkinElmer nebulizer assemblies are adjustable foroptimized performance and include easily interchangedcapillary assemblies for simple, reduced-cost maintenance.PerkinElmer nebulizers are manufactured to exacting tolerancesto provide maximum sensitivity. Universal, or standard, nebulizers are less expensive than the corresponding high-sensitivity nebulizers and provide a lower level of sensitivity. The universal, or standard, nebulizers typically providebetter precision and reduced carryover interference whenused with solutions that contain high dissolved solids andcontent of higher analyte concentrations.

Corrosion-Resistant NebulizerFor all solutions containing hydrofluoric acid or aqua regia

For all solutions containing high concentrations ofdissolved solids

All internal components in contact with solutions areconstructed of plastic to resist corrosion fromconcentrated acids

Reduced performance compared with stainless steel orplatinum/rhodium nebulizers

GemTip NebulizerCorrosion-resistant and can be used to aspirate almostall solutions, even those solutions containing a highpercentage of acids

Designed to obtain optimum sensitivity, detection limits, and precision with flame atomic absorption for bothair-acetylene and nitrous oxide-acetylene flames

High-Sensitivity NebulizersProvide maximum sensitivity, precision, and freedomfrom analytical interferences

The high-sensitivity nebulizer with platinum/iridiumcapillary is for most solutions, but not for precious metalsamples containing aqua regia

High-sensitivity nebulizer with tantalum capillary usedfor solutions containing aqua regia

Platinum Alloy NebulizerRecommended for most concentrated acidscontaining >5% acid

Includes a platinum alloy needle assembly and atantalum venturi

    Provides maximum chemical resistance

Not suitable for use with aqua regia or hydrofluoric acid

Stainless Steel NebulizerFor most solutions containing

Rely on PerkinElmer graphitefor consistent analytical results.

    Every sample. Every day.

We Start With an Exclusive Grade of GraphiteThe production of high-quality graphitecomponents requires stringent quality control.Selection and careful control of raw materials areextremely important.

The composition and the microstructure of thebase graphite material determines the resistivityof the tube and its heating characteristics. Toensure high quality and consistency, a specifichigh-density base graphite material has beendeveloped for use with PerkinElmer graphitefurnace systems. This base graphite material isused exclusively for the manufacturing ofPerkinElmers graphite components.

Trust Your Analysis toGenuine PerkinElmer Graphite

Our Tubes Are Manufacturedand Tested to the HighestQuality SpecificationsDuring manufacturing, a comprehensivequality testing program includingextensive mechanical, electrical, thermal, and analytical testingprocedures is strictly followed.

Each lot of graphite tubes is tested todemanding specifications for lifetime, sensitivity, and precision.

Extensive testing ensures that all graphitecomponents shipped by PerkinElmerprovide consistent lot-to-lot performance.

Our Pyrolytic Coating Designis Critical to AchievingHigh PerformanceThe specified thickness of pyrolytic coatingapplied to PerkinElmer graphite improvesthe total resistance of the graphite tube andthe temperature distribution within thetube. Improper pyrolytic coating canshorten tube lifetime dramatically.

The microstructure and density of thesurface are important parameters for theatomization kinetics of analyte elements.Irreproducible surface qualities will causechanges in the optimal drying, pyrolysisand atomization temperatures, peak shapeand characteristic mass. PerkinElmerscoating specification and quality controlensure consistency from tube to tube.

You Can Depend onOur Extensive ExperiencePerkinElmer has over three decadesof experience in the design anddevelopment of graphite furnacesystems and materials. Years ofPerkinElmer development haveyielded the best possible graphitefor atomic absorption.

Any other graphite has not beenoptimized for use with PerkinElmerinstruments and may yieldinaccurate analytical results.

    30

Do Not Accept ImitationsGraphite components offered by other companiesoften refer to the PerkinElmer part, implying that thesecomponents are made from the same material and provideequivalent performance. This is misleading, as theseimitation components are not made from the samebase graphite material, nor are they tested to the samedemanding quality control specifications. The differentbase graphite material will alter the temperaturecalibration, the heating rates, and the performancecharacteristics.

Rely on Genuine PerkinElmer GraphiteTodays analysts expect exceptional analytical performancefrom their graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometers. That performance must be stable and reproducible fromday to day with respect to sensitivity (characteristic mass),accuracy, and precision.

The graphite tube, the heart of the graphite furnace, playsa vital role in the overall stability of an analysis. In orderto assure stable analytical conditions from one atomizationcycle to the next, and from graphite tube to graphite tube,

all graphite parts contacts, tubes, and platforms must be under strict quality control by both the instrumentmanufacturer and the graphite manufacturer. PerkinElmergraphite components continue to set the industry standardfor quality.

The proper performance, maintenance, and serviceabilityof your graphite furnace system can be assured onlythrough the use of genuine, high-quality PerkinElmergraphite components.

How is High-Quality Graphite Manufactured? Select carefully chosen raw materials that are exclusive to PerkinElmer

Mill and mix the components with precision

    Utilize the proper pressing techniques

Employ the correct heat treatments at carefully selected times

Purify materials at multiple times throughout the process

Apply special coating technology for pyrolytic products

Test and qualify graphite against rigorous PerkinElmer standards

Machine patented PerkinElmer designs using specialized techniques

HGA Graphite Contact Cylinders, Tubes, and Supplies

    31

The graphite contact cylinders used in the HGA GraphiteFurnace are engineered for a precise fit so that variationsin electrical contact which might affect the analyticalperformance are reduced to a minimum. The graphitecontacts are shaped so that they completely encase thegraphite tube. Thus, the graphite tube is located in adefined inert environment, which ensures uniformheating conditions and long tube lifetime.

The Lvov Platform is a small plate of solid pyrocoatedgraphite that is inserted into the graphite tube. It has a slightdepression in the center which can accommodate up to 50 Lof solution. The function of the Lvov Platform is to isolatethe sample from the tube walls to allow more reproducibleatomization of the sample through indirect heating. Theplatform heats primarily by the radiation given off from thetube walls. Sample vaporization and atomization occur afterthe tube reaches a steady-state temperature.

Use of the Lvov Platform provides:

Vaporization into a higher temperature gas atmosphereproducing more free atoms, which reduce interferences

Longer tube life because aggressive samples are onlyin contact with the solid pyrolytic graphite platform

  • PerkinElmers expertise in the design andmanufacture of light sources for atomicabsorption spectrometers traces back toour original hollow cathode lamps, developednearly 40 years ago.

    39

Lamps for Atomic AbsorptionLumina Hollow Cathode Lamps

PerkinElmer manufactures a full range of single-element and multi-element hollow cathode lampsand high-intensity electrodeless discharge lamps forthose elements for which they are more effective.

Every genuine PerkinElmer Lumina lamp is designedfor use with, and tested on, our spectrometers to assurecompatibility and the highest performance. To prolongthe life of a Lumina hollow cathode lamp (HCL), weproduce lamps with larger internal volume so thata greater supply of fill gas at optimum pressure isavailable. The larger the lamp, the greater the inertgas volume and the longer the lamp lifetime.PerkinElmer offers a wide range of single-element andmulti-element HCLs, which are ideal for determiningmost elements by atomic absorption spectroscopy.

For the Widest Selection of ElementsThe basic components of a hollow cathode lamp (HCL) are a sealed glasscylinder filled with an inert gas (argon or neon), an anode, a cathode, andeither glass or quartz end window. The cathode is a hollow cylinder ofthe element whose spectrum is to be produced, or in some cases, an alloyor carefully selected mixture of metals which do not spectrally interfere.Hollow cathode lamps emit light by the following process: The fill gas isionized when an electrical potential is applied between the anode andthe cathode. The positively charged ions collide with the negativelycharged cathode and dislodge individual metal atoms in a process knownas sputtering. These sputtered metal atoms are excited throughimpact with fill gas ions, and light of the specific wavelengths for thatelement is emitted when the atom decays from the excited state backto the more stable state.

PerkinElmer Exclusive 6/24 WARRANTY*Lumina Hollow Cathode Lamps1. We warrant that during the first six months or after 5,000 milliampere-hours of operation,

whichever comes first, from initial date of shipment, the lamps will meet or exceed theintensity and absorption specifications to which all new lamps are tested.

    2. All our hollow cathode lamps are warranted to light and emit the spectra of the elementindicated for two years or 5,000 milliampere-hours of operation from the date of theshipment, whichever comes first.

    3. If any lamp fails before the expiration of the warranty period, it will be replaced free of charge.* The lamp warranty is void for lamps which sustain physical damage or are operated at power

levels substantially above or below the power level recommended on the lamp label. The lampwarranty may vary in different countries.
