Prem Ganapathy The Dosawala
Prem Ganapathy, was stranded at the bandra station,when the person
accompanying him left him and ran away. Prem had no local acquaintances or
knowledge of the language. Out of pity, a fellow Tamilian guided him to atemple and appealed worshipers to contribute money for his return ticket to
hennai.
Prem refused to go back and decided to work in !umbai and started cleaning
utensils in a restaurant. "e appealed to his owner, to let him become a waiter
as he was class #$ pass. The owner refused, because of regional politics and
Prem bided his time till a neighbor hood dosa restaurant opened and o%ered
him a &ob from a dishwasher to a tea boy.
Prem became a huge hit with the customers because of his e'cellent
customer ser(ice, initiati(es and relationship and brought business )s. #$$$
daily which was almost * times as compared to other tea boys. The life was
good.
+ customer made him an o%er. "e was planning to open a tea shop in ashi in
!umbai. "e wanted Prem to be his -$ -$ partner where the owner would
in(est the money while Prem would run the shop. The shop started doing brisk
business when the owner became greedy. t hurt him to share -$ / of the
pro0t with Prem and he threw Prem out replacing him with an employee.
Prem was made of a di%erent material and he was ne(er going to be
defeated. "e took a small loan from his uncle and with his brother, opened his
own tea stall. 1nfortunately the neighbourhood residents ob&ected. "e then
started a hand cart but that also did not work out. "e found a spot and set up
a south ndian stall. "e did not know a thing about dosas and idli but learnt by
obser(ation, trial and error. The dosa stall was a huge hit and 2ourished
during the - years from #3345#336. 7ut why was the tiny dosa stall was was
so successful in spite of competition from ubiquitous eateries pre(alent in
!umbai. +ccording to Prem it was its hygiene, proper appearances of the
waiters and fresh ingredients which stood out as a di%erence.
"e sa(ed a couple of lakhs of )upees and instead of heading home he took
the biggest risk of his life and opened a new shop near ashi station and
named it as Dosa Pla8a. "is hinese pla8a ne't to the Dosa Pla8a 2opped
miserably and was shut down in * months. 1ndaunted, Prem reali8ed some
lessons from it. "e applied those lessons in making hinese cuisine in his
dosas which worked (ery well.

!r. Ganapathy was &oined by his brothers during this period. !r. Ganapathy
