Continuing Our Journey of Faith - FFHL Campaign

We have surpassed the halfway mark to our goal of 512,000! Thank you to all who have pledged so generously towards this campaign

You should have received a reminder from the Diocese with instruc-tions for sending in your scheduled payment on your pledge. If you have not received it, please notify Carol in the office so she can have a member of the campaign team investigate and resolve this.

Even though the official solicitation period for pledges is complete, we still need your support. You may still make a pledge or contribution to help us reach our goal and make the much needed capital improve-ments to our buildings and grounds. This is our Church and every little bit helps us get closer to our goal.

If you have not been contacted by one of our builders to discuss how you may help make this vital campaign a success, please call the of-fice and let Carol know. If you have not turned in your pledge card yet, please send it to the office or place it in the offertory. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the office and tell Carol that you would like to talk to one of the team members and she will have someone contact you. Together we can reach our goal and move forward in Continuing Our Journey of Faith.

July 26, 2015 WEEKLY KNIGHT

Knightly Reflection In today’s Gospel we hear the miracle of the loaves and fish according to John. There are many accounts that ap-pear in the three synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke), but the number of accounts that appear in all four Gos-pels is far fewer. This is one miracle that is referenced in all four Gospels…and all four agree on the amount of food – five loaves and two fish. So this event clearly had a profound impact on all of them. In John’s account, it is noted that the five loaves and two fish belonged to a boy. John could have easily just said the food belonged to one who was in the crowd, but it seems noteworthy to me anyway that they make a point that the food came from a boy, and not one of the men. The Gospels show us that Jesus valued children. When the disciples attempted to send the children away, he chastised them and advised that “the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” When the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, Jesus told his disciples that “unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” With this emphasis on children and being like children leading the path to salvation, is it surprising then that it is through the humble sharing of a child that all are fed. If you read between the lines of this Gospel, there is one thing that has to happen that is not explicitly described. Jesus has to ask the boy for his food. And, most importantly, the boy had to give the food – the loaves and fish – to Jesus. He had enough faith in Jesus to give up the food which would have fed him and possibly his family to our Lord without hesitation and without question. Which one of us would have done the same? Have you ever attended a First Communion Mass? Have you seen the expression on the face of some of the children receiving Christ for the first time? Some of that awe and reverence gets lost as we get older. We can get hardened by the world. Children do not know hate until it’s taught to them by an adult. The children can help to remind us of the person still buried inside somewhere, the person God wants us to be. Just like the five thousand in today’s Gospel were fed through a child, so may we all be fed by allowing ourselves to see through the eyes of a child and act accordingly. The Knights of Columbus realize the importance of chil-dren, and have many programs devoted just to youth.

1st Degree A First Degree exemplification will be held here at St. Joan of Arc this Tuesday, July 28, at 7:00 PM. Candidates need to arrive by no later than 6:30 PM.

Page 8: Welcome to SAINT JOAN OF ARC Catholic Churchstjoanofarccandler.org/attachments/File/Weekly_Bulletins/WB-2015/...priest at least six (6) ... ling analysis of modern bioethical questions,

First Reading / 2 Kings 4:42-44 1. Twenty loaves won't be enough to feed the crowd. Elisha knows this. He has to trust God over his own logic. Is this leap-of-faith kind of trust ever required in your life? Does this kind of trust become easier with practice? Discuss. 2. Both Elisha and the man from Baal-shalishah had to trust that a miracle would happen. Do you consider anything as a miracle besides “something that breaks the laws of nature”? What are some everyday miracles in your life?

Second Reading / Ephesians 4:1-6 1. Paul reminds the brothers and sisters to “preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit.” Was this a directive only for the Ephesians? What do you do to preserve unity? 2. Which would be better, to preserve the peace by not talking to anyone we disagree with, or to preserve the unity by stay-ing at the table and talking it out? Gospel / John 6:1-15 1. Pope Francis says that the “food was shared fairly … no one was deprived.” What are the implications for us regarding the inequality of resources and starvation all over the world? Jesus fed the multitude with five loaves and two fish. And the end of this passage is important: “and all ate and were satis-fied. And they took up what was left over, twelve baskets of broken pieces” (Lk 9:17) and (Jn 6:12). Jesus asked the disci-ples to ensure that nothing was wasted: nothing thrown out! And there is this fact of 12 baskets: why 12? What does it mean? Twelve is the number of the tribes of Israel. It repre-sents symbolically the whole people. And this tells us that when the food was shared fairly, with solidarity, no one was deprived of what (s)he needed. Every community could meet the needs of its poorest members. Human and environmental ecology go hand in hand.

Pope Francis, General Audience Saint Peter's Square, Wednes-day, June 5, 2013

2. What do you think God is more likely to do, miraculously drop food where there is starvation or inspire people to help their neighbors solve their problems? If the latter, how can you help (through the Holy Spirit) in third world countries, your city, diocese, parish, office, or neighborhood?
