First Turnip Harvest on December 8th! On December 8th ten Washburn High School students harvested our first crop of turnips from the new high tun-nel. Outside the ground was covered in snow, but inside the high tun-nel it was about 45 de-grees and we were able to easily pull the turnips from the loose soil. Many students had never tried a turnip be-fore. After sampling the turnips, some students said it tasted like a mild radish, and some said it tasted like a broccoli stem. All students agreed that it was crunchy and mild. The turnips will be served fresh on the salad bar at the high school this week and mashed into the potatoes for the holiday lunch on December 11th. How-ever, the high tunnel gardening is still going! We still have a healthy bed of spinach growing and we plan to use the spinach in blood drive breakfast on December 17th .

Let the New Season Begin!

Ready to have a lot of fun, the cross country ski team starts a new

season. The ski team has a lot of new members who want to learn

how to ski and have fun with the team. There are also a lot of

coaches this year who help the team and teach the recreational ski-

ers how to ski. The race team started their season a few weeks ago

and train every day at Ashwabay or Ashland. The expectations this

year are high and the old members from last year want to be better,

faster, and want to make their goals come true. But the important

thing is to have team unity and have fun together. After the winter

break the recreational-ski team also starts and trains twice a week at

Ashwabay and Ashland. For those skiers it is important to learn

how to ski, then ski a few races, and in the midseason participate in

“Book Across the Bay”. The whole team is excited and wants to

have a fun season!

Into the Season with New Talents and Confidence The alpine ski team is full of new people and potential this year.

New faces from Washburn, Bayfield, and from all over the world

(through AFS students) enrich the Alpine Ski Team. “The team is

fresh and it will be fun to get to know each other better and grow

as a team, ”said Emma Meeker the girls’ Captain. The expectations

are high. Last year the boys got 1st place in the Conference and the

girls got 3rd place. The coach expects the boys’ team to be first

place again this year, especially because “they are strong skiers and

physically, very strong”. Although the team lost an amazing talent,

Eric Sauer who graduated 2014, there are several guys who could

take his place this year. Christian Flores got 4th last year but is ex-

pected to be a top competitor this year. Logan Route is back in and

should be in the top five this year. Also, Emma Meeker, the girls

captain is expected to be in the top five. “We are in a building year

but I feel we have a strong base to build on and I expect that will

happen quickly,” said Coach Kathy Radtke.

Senior Citizen Sport’s Passes Available The Washburn School District offers free-lifetime sport’s passes for senior citizens. If you would like a pass, please e-mail your name and mailing address to [email protected] or call the high school office at (715) 373-6188 ext. 100. Art Students Visit the Minneapolis Institute of Arts

On Friday, November 7, Mrs. Tetzner and several other staff members traveled with thirty Wash-

burn high school art students to visit the Minne-apolis Institute of Arts. Students were given a

guided tour of some of the museum’s highlight pieces, as well as were given time to explore the museum’s vast permanent collection of paintings,

sculptures, photographs and more. It was excit-ing to see original art pieces on display by some

of the well-known artists studied in class, includ-ing Chuck Close, Vincent Van Gogh and Roy

Lichtenstein. Students completed a scavenger hunt by searching for and recording information

on art pieces that they felt fit with certain themes such as peace, power and energy. Those in at-tendance came away with much new knowledge

and inspiration!

Printmaking Students Visit Blue Rock Workshop

Washburn printmaking students had the great treat of visiting local artist Mark Nutt in his Blue Rock Workshop for a lesson on monotype printing with a printing press. Mark teaches many classes and workshops out of his studio and is best known for his own colorful intaglio monoprints, drawings, mixed media, and sculpture. He holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Students were provided with colorful inks, different textural materials and paper prepared with light spray paint. Mark demonstrated the technique of creating a “rainbow roll” with several colors of ink on the same brayer, and showed students how to prepare their items for printing. Students had the opportunity to lay out their own designs on plexiglas pieces and run them through the printing press that Mark built himself. The results were a variety of layered, col-orful designs pressed into the paper featuring the shapes and textures of the items that stu-

dents had chosen and arranged themselves. It was a great exercise in experimentation and the printing press was an amazing piece of equipment to get to use!

School Report Card

Some people think that small schools cannot achieve big things, but this is not the case in Washburn. This year Washburn excelled academi-cally, not only in our district but in the state of Wisconsin; ranking in the top five percent on the school report card. The school report card gathers tests scores from all students, including the ACT and the WKCE tests, and compares them to the rest of the state. Throughout the report card, Washburn was consistently above average in all of the categories and the overall accountability score and rank was 82.9 per-

cent, which puts Washburn into the category that “Exceeds Expectations.” Programs such as ALEKS Math and Achieve 3000 allow stu-dents to excel past classroom expectations, pushing themselves and the students around them. The administration and teachers will use the data results from the tests to target weak areas. Washburn School District hopes to continue these excellent rankings throughout the years to come.

Expectations are High for the Guards !

There are big expectations for this year’s Washburn Boys’ Basketball Team. After an unexpected and tough loss to Drummond last year during their regional-final game, the boys have never been hungrier to win. The team put a lot of work into this past summer, training hard to get ready for this year’s season. The boys opened up with a great first win this season against Hurley by a score of 79-28. Without the guidance and persistent motivation and leadership from their coach Duane Gasperini, the boys would not be the team they are. Coach Gasperini tells the boys to stay “humble and hungry” and “to always play harder than their opponent”. The team is a close knit group of boys and has good leadership from some of the seniors. “They have the potential to make some noise in the state tournament this year, but things have to work in our favor for that to happen. They need to stay humble and hungry” says their coach, Duane Gasperini.

Washburn High School Girls’ Basketball

New coach, Lily Sandstrom has eight players ready to play hard in demanding games. Ms. Sandstrom was a former Lumber Jill player for the Northland College Girls’ Basketball Team. This year’s team lost four starting seniors from last year which included Alli Vernon, Paige Vernon, Courtney Halvorson, and Kierstyn Fibert. With them graduated, the girls have some rebuilding to do this year and in the next upcoming years. Returning to play is senior Eryn Kelly, sopho-mores Bridget Motiff, Emma Rusch, Makayla Madison, and Kim Cas-per. New freshman include, Baylee Barningham, Emily Belanger, and Pooja Geisen. These new incoming players will bring lots of playing experience, stamina and energy to the court.

Wrestling News

Last year was the first year Wrestling was offered to Washburn High School, combining Washburn with the already existing Bayfield High School Wrestling Team. Returning are coaches Steve Miller and Lor-en LaPointe and new coaches include, Casey Dean and Stephanie LaPointe. This year the wrestling team hopes to follow in last year’s footsteps and make it to sectionals. This year the boys wrestling from Washburn are senior Alastair Merton, junior Evan Basina, and sopho-mores Zachary Anglin, Zachary Barker, and Josiah Cook. They have their Northland Open meet on January 17, 2015 at the Ashland High School. They will also have a home meet at Washburn. The date is still being determined. Come out to a meet to support this year’s wres-tling team!

Hockey Team Remains Undefeated

Ashland-Washburn Hockey team is off to a great start this year with Washburn’s Connor Olson playing a key role. The Oredockers are currently on a role and are 6-0. Wash-burn is in its second year of the hockey co-op with Ashland and is excited to offer the opportunity for those interested in hockey to be able to play. Freshman, Connor Olson, is the lone player from Washburn on the team, but Washburn looks forward to adding more players to the team in the fu-ture. Connor has been a major factor in the success of the Oredockers providing steady defense for the starting line, as well as is a contributor to goas scored through assists. Get out and check on excited game on the ice at the Bay Area Civic Center. Check the school website of dates and times.
