four SeaSonS aT SouTh KnollS hoa finanCial aCCounTSBy The Board of Trustees

At the recent budget meeting there were multiple ques-tions related to the financial accounts used at South Knolls; how those accounts are funded and what accounts are used to pay for certain expenditures. Hopefully this document will answer any questions you may have.

We have four financial accounts that we use at South Knolls. Those accounts are as follows:

• operating account• Deferred Maintenance account• reserve account • working CapitalA detailed explanation of those accounts and how they

are funded is included below:operating account: includes all of the expense items

within the year for which a budget is made. Expense items include salaries, utilities, phone, cable, security, lifeguards, landscaping, legal fees, etc… The Operating Account is funded from the homeowner’s monthly dues and any other income that the HOA might generate. Other forms of income, though small, include the sale of pool bands, the Sprit newspaper advertising, and municipal reimbursement for snow removal. Funds in this account can’t be used to pay for items already budgeted in the deferred maintenance account or to pay for capital replacement items budgeted

in the reserve account. Deferred Maintenance account. Includes funds for

maintenance items that occur less frequently then annually. This Account is also funded by homeowner’s monthly dues. The contribution for the deferred maintenance account in the 2018/2019 budget was $40,000. Painting, carpet cleaning, drape/curtain cleaning, tile cleaning/grouting, concrete repair, etc… are an example of items budgeted in this account.

working Capital: This account is strictly funded by home sales. homeowner monthly dues are not used to fund this account. Each time a house is sold at South Knolls the buyer is charged 3 months of the current hom-eowner monthly dues to become a member of the Hom-eowner’s Association. The funds in this account are used at the discretion of the Board of Trustees for the purchase of new capital items. As an example, in 2017, funds from this account were used to install heat, air conditioning and window tinting in the Sun Room, additional outdoor light-ing, awnings at the Bocce Courts and a storage shed. All working capital expenditures are reflected in the monthly financial reports made available to the homeowners on the web site and are also reflected in the annual audit report.

reserve account: The funds in this account are de-signed to replace existing reserve account assets that are damaged, fully depreciated, obsolete or at end of life. This account is funded by the homeowner’s monthly dues. An example of reserve account assets include the roads, swim-ming pools, clubhouse roofing and cladding, heat and air conditioning, flooring, gym equipment etc… To ensure that the Reserve Account is funded properly the Board of Trustees and the Property Management team perform a regularly scheduled review of the Reserve Account and the asset inventory in that account. An in-depth review of the Reserve Account was performed by Becht Engineering in the 3rd quarter of 2017. As a result of this review, the Board of Trustees increased the annual Reserve Account contribution in the 2018/2019 budget to $365,000.

As part of the Annual Audit, the auditor verifies that the association is funding this account as outlined in the Reserve Study and that all of the expenses charged to the Reserve account were appropriate. In 2017, Reserve Ac-count funds were used to replace the following assets; pool tables, gym equipment, road sealing and the clubhouse patio.

Reserve Account funds can’t be used to purchase new capital items or to replace assets that aren’t part of the Re-serve Account asset inventory. An example of that would be the new shed we recently installed by the Bocce Courts. As a new capital item that shed was purchased with funds from the Working Capital Account. Once that shed was installed it was then added to the Reserve Account inven-tory. Ten years from now if the shed has to be replaced the replacement shed would then be purchased using funds from the Reserve Account.

MeeT Your neiGhBorS: Maria eSpoSiTo-BeSiGnano anD roSe CiaBurri

By Carol Rogers

In a departure from the usual type of interview for this article, I thought it might be interesting to hear how the directors of the Theater Guild produce a show, such as the recent “Through the Year”, as well as their musical backgrounds. Carol Rogers

Someone should have taped the interview with Rose and Maria. It would have received many “views” on YouTube. The photo alone took an eternity (an exaggera-tion)! These two make a good pair, with lots of energy and enthusiasm for the crafts of singing, light comedy and entertainment. They met when Rose moved to South Knolls. Maria had been told by resident Sonia Monahan that a great singer was moving to the community. Sonia had seen Rose perform on Staten Island in benefits for non-profits (1976-2001) and in shows at St. Clare’s Parish, where she wrote, produced and directed productions for five years. Rose was moving to FSSK from Middletown with her husband Charlie, joining her cousins, residents Ann and Joe Adamo. It didn’t take Rose long to get involved in the Theater Guild.

Both ladies grew up in musical households. Maria’s mother had a third cousin named Mario Lanza, so there were good genes in that family! Music was always being played in her home. She was told she could sing before she could talk. In elementary school, Maria had the same music teacher for three years and was convinced to appear in the Mikado, Pirates of Penzance and Babes in Toyland, although she was very shy (hard to believe) and was re-

luctant to sing publicly. She sang at home for her mother and grandmother, and studied music in both junior and senior high school, singing in glee clubs. Maria’s hesita-tion to sing in front of others continued until she moved to South Knolls, when she was “dragged” to an audition at the clubhouse. In her first performance here, she sang the Patsy Cline song “When I Get Through with You” and the Connie Francis song “Frankie”. The audience’s warm reception was very encouraging.

Rose has always felt very comfortable on the stage. Her first “stage” was her crib, where she was heard singing “On Top of Old Smokey”. At age four, she appeared in recitals. She grew up developing a good ear for a variety of musical genres, from Broadway to pop. (Not a fan of rap or hiphop, just REAL music.) As an adult, Rose worked as Director of Marketing for Navesink House, was Direc-tor of Community Relations at Chelsea, the assisted living community in Manalapan, and was Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Eastern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce and the Red Bank River Center. She was Miss Red Bank Ambassador in 1999.

Maria’s professional career was altogether different. She spent years as a psychiatric social worker at the South Beach Psychiatric Centers in Brooklyn and Staten Island, the Brooklyn Outpatient Clinic, and in Staten Island at a psychiatric outpatient center, was Director of adult residen-tial programs at St. Vincent’s Hospital and the Director of the adolescent day treatment program. She had a private psychotherapy practice following 9-11, treating first re-sponders free of charge.

So, one of the Theater Guild directors had lots of hands-on experience with performing and producing shows, and the other director had experience dealing with stress, which brings us to how a show is put together. The last production, “Through the Year” just wrapped up on February 18 and already the team is thinking of ideas for 2019! The first step of the process is to identify a concept which will evoke memories of the past while intertwining life here in an adult community, and keeping in mind the composition of the audience (family and friends, mostly age contemporaries). The potential theme of the next show will be brought to the Theater Guild Board shortly. The second step is the writing. The 2019 show will be their third as a team, and they will draw on past experience. They now know many people in the community and can design a production around the interests and talents of past performers while leaving room for new people interested in participating. In July, they will bring their ideas to the full

Theater Guild Board and establish audition and rehearsal dates. Auditions begin in September and rehearsals the following month. Most rehearsals occur during the day because, with the population of our community, thoughts go to pills and pillows after 8 p.m.! All this has to be ar-ranged around bocce, because so many potential performers as well as the audience are loyal to that activity.

The 2018 show was the first time the Guild sold tickets with reserved seating for the audience. Those in favor of seating like that in a theater cite the fact that they didn’t have to arrive two hours before the performance to get a good seat and didn’t have to incur the wrath of others when trying to save seats. It also allowed for larger numbers in the audience. There were even ushers from St. Aloysius School, who were earning hours of community service. Some people prefer table seating, however, since beverages and snacks can be enjoyed during the show. The Guild is weighing the benefits of each before the next show.

When asked about the greatest need of the Theater Guild, there was a definite answer: a new sound system!! The current system is temperamental and unreliable. Dur-ing Maria’s last performance in February, her microphone failed and she had to depend on those Lanza-related pipes to be heard.

Rose and Maria were emphatic about recognizing all those who were instrumental in the production. The stage hands did a lot of heavy lifting during the many scene changes: Bob Callahan, Hank Barish, Frank DeRiso, Joe Mezza, Ken Monahan, Charles Marchak and Joe Spizzirri. Frank Ricucci not only spent countless hours working with performers to sync the key of the background music to their voices, but worked with his crew for two days assembling the stage and lighting. Ray Nasto worked the lights, Ben Leibowitz narrated the show, Joe Besignano and Ken Mo-nahan engineered the audio, and Debbie Kullback made sure all the acts were ready to go on. Frank Perricone is not only adept at the violin, but sewed the curtains for the stage. And they could not have done it without the help of Den-nison of the clubhouse staff. It really does take a village.

Who are the support systems for Maria and Rose during all this? Maria points to Rose. Rose points to the Man upstairs who is with her 24/7. Maria still gets the jitters before a show but wears something that belonged to her deceased mother, who always wanted her daughter to “go public”. She makes a silent dedication to her mom and her grandmother, who became blind at age 50. They are smiling now.

For readers who missed the Theater Guild show or for those who want to see portions again, it is recommended that you go to YouTube, then enter fssk18, to view many of the performances. Enjoy!

Question posed: How would you protect our schools today?

Juan Casanova – Stamford DriveThere’s no one answer to solve this problem. We should

start with metal detectors at the main entrance of schools. The Police Department should set up satellites near schools within close proximity to every school.

Virginia Shaffer – Huntington DriveStudents and Faculty should have key cards to get

into school.

Belle Shebses – Cromwell LaneAssault weapons and bump stocks should all be

banned. Perhaps, metal detectors should be installed in schools?

Richard Maczka – Kingston Drive I would suggest three things: 1. A retired or active Po-

lice Officer in each school. 2. Only one access in or out of school once the students are in. 3. With new technology, there should be doors that automatically are locked and opened for all emergencies.

By Joe Conti &Tony Crispe

Well we are halfway through March and with 6 weeks remaining in our season the Titans hold a 5 point lead over the Pinbusters, with Rolling Thunder, Tom’s Diva’s, Alley Cats, Rockets and Chicklets close by.

The last 7 weeks have been very exciting. On February 14th, we almost had two perfect games. First, Jack Jackson went into the 10th frame of the 2nd game having thrown all strikes. Jack got the 1st two strikes for 11 in a row then crushed the pocket perfectly, only to leave a ringing 10 pin for a great 299 game. Jack has been there before, and in fact, has eighteen 300 games. Further up the alley, now in his 3d game, Sal Croce had strikes in the first 9 frames. Sal had also been in this position before, but came up just short, well not this time, Sal got his 3 strikes in the 10th frame for a perfect 300.

A week later, John Galatola shot a 748 series, making it the 7th highest series in the 11 years of this league. On March 14th, Anthony Passaretti, bowling in the 1st game, buried his 1st ball in the pocket leaving that hated ringing 10 pin. It happens to all bowlers but no matter how many times it happens, you are always stunned that you didn’t get a strike. Anthony made the spare then proceeded to throw the next 11 strikes in a row for a big 290 game. To bowl a 700 series is not that common, but we had a few these past 7 weeks. In addition to John Galatola’s 748, we also had, Dennis Jandoli, 730, Anthony (again) Passaretti, 729, 727, Jack Jackson, 718 and Sal Croce 715. Now, here are all the men’s scores from 225 and above. Sal Croce, 300, 246, 236, 233, Jack Jackson, 299, 243, 226, 225, Anthony (he wears out my keyboard) Passaretti, 290, 267, 254, 249, 236 twice, 233 twice, 226 twice, 225 twice, Jerry Grigoli, 267, 234, Dennis Jandoli, 266, 248, 246, 244, John Galatola, 266, 256, 226, Lou Rivera, 259, 233, Ray Nasto, 246, 232, 231, Joe Barone, 245, Mike smith 245, 236, 233, William Barna, 243, 226, Bob Mignemi, 239, Joe Conti, 237, 232, 230, Richie Q, 237, Patty Murdocco, 231, 227, Steve Rankin, 229 and Joe Spizzirri, 225.

The ladies chipped in with games over 170 led by Kathy Orecchio with a terrific 220, Marion Macchia, 190, Sandy Jacobson, 189, Chris McKenna, 186, Janet Conhaim, 183, 179, 174, Abby McKenty, 183, Susan Vohrer, 182, 174, Lillian Fuentes, 181, 174, Maureen Cunningham, 181, Carmen Rivera & Marie Gubitosi, 180, Georgina Fopeano, 179, 173, 171, Carol Ricucci, 177, Maria Koumoulis, 174, 173, Alicia Barone, 173, Carol Conti, 172

The improvement achieved by the bowlers in this league over the past several years has been phenomenal. Additionally each week, we witness a great deal of fun and sportsmanship. It’s a nice way to spend our Wednesday mornings.

The following comes to us from our leader, Tony Crispe;

Joe said it right. There was some great bowling the last few weeks. Unfortunately, I was unable to be there. I missed Sal Croce’s 300 game and Jack Jackson’s 299, you just have to try a little harder Jack. Just kidding Jack, you probably have more 300 games then I have 200 games. On a sadder note you must know we lost one of our bowlers this season, Josephine Ambrosio. It might just be my imagination, but when Josephine came into the bowling alley, the whole alley got brighter. I thought I even saw some oil appearing on the lanes. Josephine and I had a little joke going when she got a spare, or especially a strike, she would scream loud and I would tell her that the Manager of Walgreens called me and asked me to keep the noise down. We will miss you Josephine. One thing I would like you all to do, is to keep all of our bowling members and residents that are ill and fighting hard to get well in our prayers. Thank you and thanks for keeping it fun.

Did you know that there is a New Jersey Property Reimbursement, for N J seniors? It is better-known as the senior freeze.

You may be eligible for a reimbursement of the differ-ence between the amount of property taxes you paid for the base year (the year you first became eligible) and the amount paid for the year for which you are applying, if you met all the following requirements for the base year and for each succeeding year, up to and including the year for which you are claiming the reimbursement.

The filing date for the 2017 reimbursement is October 31, 2018. If you have previously filed, a 2017 PTR-2 form has been sent to you. Residents who were not previously eligible can apply for a 2017 reimbursement by complet-ing and filing Form PTR-1. They must submit proof of age such as a copy of their birth certificate, driver’s license, or church records. Applicants who are not 65 years of age or older but are receiving Federal Social Security disability benefits must submit a copy of the Social Security Award Letter indicating that the applicant was receiving benefits. An applicant does not qualify if receiving benefits on behalf of someone else.

Security disability benefits. You have lived in New Jersey continuously for at least

the last 10 years, as either a homeowner or a renter. You have owned and lived in your home for at least

the last 3 years. You have paid the full amount of property taxes that

were due on your home for the base year and for each suc-ceeding year, up to and including the year for which you are claiming the reimbursement.

You meet the income limits for the base year and for each succeeding year, up to and including the year for which you are claiming the reimbursement.

Residents applying for the 2017 reimbursement must have total income for 2017 that is $87,268 or less .. These limits apply regardless of marital/civil union status. How-ever, if your filing status was married/CU couple, and you lived in the same household, you must combine your incomes for that year.

A copy of the 2017 property tax bills and proof of pay-ment must be submitted with the application. The township will supply proof of payment if you visit the tax collector. To eligible for the 2017 reimbursement an applicant must have been 65 years of age or older as of December 31, 2017,

Men’S CluB lunCheon aT papouSBy Joe Conti

Here we are in late March and winter doesn’t want to quit. The day after our most recent nor’easter, a hearty group of members went up the road a piece to Jackson’s newest restaurant, Papous Place. The menu was Greek and the portions were a healthy size, suitable for a men’s luncheon. The owner, manager and staff were all very pleasant and helpful.

These luncheons are another way for our members to get together and share our old and new war stories. We’ll have another luncheon in a couple of months, sign up and spend a couple of hours with the “guys”.

Our annual meeting showcasing our support for stu-dents from the Katzenbach School for the Deaf was held in February. Accompanied by administrative staff members Helene Robidoux and Monica Ayrer, several graduates told the membership a little bit about themselves and their plans for the future by “signing”, which was translated by Monica. This was a scheduled pizza meeting for the students, staff and the membership.

It was also an expensive meeting for the members as we had sign-ups for our St. Patrick’s dinner fundraiser,

Luncheon at Papous and Freehold Raceway, “Day at the Races”. Vince Scatuccio outlined some other upcoming trips. Don Marotto announced the speakers for future meetings and also stated that he finally had secured a nice sized container to donate to the Jackson food pantry. Now all we need is a trailer to transport it. By the time John Al-len concluded his standup comedy routine, we were ready to end the meeting.

Our March meeting was canceled due to very ugly weather.

reSTauranT reView ….D’JeeT? ….Seasonal and local CuisineBy Janice LoPresti

On Tuesday, February 20, 2018, we dined at D’jeet?, at the Grove, 637 Broad Street in Shrewsbury. It has been at that location for nine years. Casey Pesce, the Chef and Owner studied in Italy. He named the restaurant with a play on words from a saying his grandfather always used. Casey believes that food is a way of bringing people together. Farm fresh to table is the style of the eatery. He keeps a garden nearby, gets other produce from local farms and sources meats from the tri-state area. The restaurant seats approximately 58 customers. There is a massive work of art, a 200 year old root system from a teak tree displayed. It certainly adds to the room’s open and airy decor and ambiance.

Breakfast classics are served only during the weekdays. Prices range from $8 to $12. Lunch and Dinner are basi-cally the same menu - with seasonal changes. Appetizers like grilled applewood wings ($12), salads like crispy calamari ($16), sandwiches like Grandpa’s - sopressata, roasted peppers, fresh mozzarella, balsamic, seeded Ital-ian bread ($12.50) and homemade pasta like pappardelle Genovese - braised beef shank and tomato ragout, crispy onion, pecorino al tartufo ($29) and entrees like grilled western Ross salmon - toasted faro pilaf, glazed beets,

braised fennel, blood orange mostarda ($33). Of course, there are always daily specials. A kid’s menu is avail-able. Desserts like mini cupcakes, cookies, strudel, cake and brownies are all homemade and absolutely delicious. Bringing your own bottle is encouraged.

There were five of us having lunch. Terri was our waitress. She was pleasant, professional and quite accom-modating. She offered positive suggestions and guidance when we reviewed the menu. We ordered pan seared scal-lops - pommes puree, roasted forest mushrooms, scallion soubise and sautéed watercress ($36), house salad with citrus dressing ($12), classic Angus burger tomato mar-malade, onion relish, boursin cheese, horseradish aioli, brioche bun ($17), Kid’s pasta ($10) and The Joey - crispy chicken cutlet, provolone, baby arugula, tomato, pesto aioli, balsamic, seeded Italian bread (12.50). We shared a scrumptious ice cream cheesecake ($12). Everyone was pleased with their selections.

The menu is limited and a bit pricey. However, the food was well worth it. If you are looking for something different, fresh and tasty, it is definitely worth the trip. They are open daily. Catering is an option. Any questions, please call 732-224-8887.

piggy Bank BonanzaBy Barbara Hosbach

Raised by parents who survived the Depression, I learned that “a penny saved is a penny earned” at an early age. Though not exactly poor, my family wasn’t exactly rolling in dough, either. Mom made sure to save money out of Dad’s paychecks, even if it meant skimping on luxuries. That had its own rewards. My sisters and I learned to ap-preciate small enjoyments: a cup of hot tea on a winter night, a good game of pinochle or gin rummy, good music available at the flick of a radio knob.

We also learned to save our money. At eight years old, when I made my First Communion, I received a gift of $20 from my aunt and uncle. The following week, my mother took me to the Perth Amboy Savings Institution and we opened my first savings account. I was reluctant to put my cash bonanza in the bank instead of going on a spending spree, but Mom explained that the bank would not only keep my money safe, but pay it back to me with interest! (I assume interest rates were higher in 1958. I’m not sure Mom’s argument would have been as persuasive at today’s rates.) Anyway, I was sold.

So what happened 25 years later was only natural. When I was 30 years old, I worked an innocent enough habit of chewing gum into a full-blown compulsion. I chewed every waking minute I wasn’t eating or sleeping. I bought the family packs at Foodtown and chewed them all myself. Because I put the spent gum in those little in-dividual wrappers each stick came in and, because there wasn’t always a trash can around, I’d end up with wadded up wrappers stuck in every pocket of my slacks and jackets. My jaws started to ache. Yes, I’d worked myself up to what was easily a five-bucks-a-week habit—and forty years ago, five bucks bought a lot of gum.

When I finally came to my senses, I decided to go off Wrigley’s cold turkey…only I knew I needed some form of motivation. My old “penny saved, penny earned” mentality kicked in. I started putting five bucks a week in a California fund. My best friend had moved there and in those days, a round trip ticket to San Francisco cost $250. Now, I could have afforded to go to California any time I wanted, but putting my money away for a special treat just made it all the more delicious. My husband didn’t care to go at the time, but my five-year-old daughter was as excited as I was. I saved for two years and that airplane ride was the sweetest trip we ever took.

Wait. There’s more. A couple of years later, my second-grader came home from school and told me her teacher taught the class about savings. Apparently, when the teacher asked for examples a classmate of my daughter raised his hand and told the class about the trip my daughter and I took to California on my gum money. Not only had my daughter learned the wisdom of “a penny saved is a penny earned”, she was spreading the word.

On Friday, February 2, 2018, the Women’s Club held its “Second Annual Fifty Shades of Red” luncheon and Fashion Show to benefit the American Heart Association. The blustery weather was offset by the warmth and cheer of the many many shades of red worn by the women at-tending the event. Tall urns of beautiful flowers atop the tables added to the splendor of the ballroom at Lakewood Country Club.

Twelve gorgeous baskets were raffled off. Beauty prod-ucts, three wine baskets, restaurant raffles, a lottery/money basket, a White Butterfly basket and home gift baskets tempted the members. Some lucky winners include Sue Mi-gnemi, Belle Shebses, Mary Kole, Judy Emhoff, Dorothy Liebowitz, Lucy Gironda, Janet Marzocca, Helen Kelly, Marie Croce and Sonia Monahan. A raffle for CPR instruc-tion for 10-12 people, to be taught by Janet Marzocca will be raffled at the February 19th meeting. The lucky winners of the 50/50 were Felice Genovese and Chris McKenna.

Members enjoyed “shopping” from vendors – Jewelry

by Alice Hesterhagen, Accessories by Fran Glickman, Lu-laRoe Clothing by Christina, Household Products by Donna Gordon and Touchstone Crystal by Swarovski.

After lunch Joanne Miskiewicz, Chico Store Manager at Freehold Raceway Mall treated us to a top-notch fashion show featuring our very own “models” Marilyn Barone, Felice Genovese, Evelyn Folla, Carol Kirschenbaum, Karen Leschak, Ethelmae Littig, Judy Maniscolcki, Pat Napoli, Cathy Orecchio, Debbie Russo, Elaine Stenmark and Jane Vega.

Special shout out to Frank Ricucci for enhancing the event with music and to the Fundraising Committee chaired by Carol Ricucci and committee members who gave their time and energy to the luncheon: Belle Shebses, Janet Conhaim, Lucy Gironda, Janet Marzocca, Sonia Monahan, Cheryl Meny and Felice Genovese.

The Women’s Club Board, Chris, Carol, Marie, Nancy and Karen, thanks their community and membership for their support.

“ThrouGh The Year” – a hilariouS hiTBy Helen Kelly

The FSSK Theater Guild presented Through the Year on Feb. 16, 17 and 18, to enthusiastic audiences. With a cast of 50+ actors, singers, dancers, comedians, writers, a musician and the crew, the show captured the raves of the audiences .It was very clever and very funny. Auditions and rehearsals started in January and those involved devoted many hours to solidify the different skits and acts. The Theater Guild had a strong core of talent to work with.

Under the direction of Maria Esposito Besignano and Rose Ciaburri, the actors honed their talent. Together with Theater Guild Board members Frank Ricucci, Ben Leibowitz, and Frank Perricone, they covered all aspects of the show.

Rose and Maria had the inception of the theme as a “calendar” production. Frank Ricucci magically adapted the sounds and music, set up the stage and was Technical Director. Ray Nasto was Lighting Engineer; Ken Monahan was Stage Manager; and Joe Besignano was Cast Audio Engineer. Some acts were originally written or adapted from TV shows by actors or directors.

One noteworthy improvement this year was the self-selection of seats by residents when purchasing their printed

tickets, done the week before the show, similar to ticket purchase at the movie theater. Initiated by director, Maria Esposito-rBesignano, with the help of Anne Alberta and Debbie Scatuccio, this plan saved residents from jostling for “good” seats, and young usher volunteers from St. Aloysius Church graciously led them to their seats

The Theater Guild players were professional. If a “mishap” occurred, the cast covered it smoothly. Whether there was a ringing telephone or an unringing telephone-no problem. What a team! With an ensemble of elves, teenag-ers, leprechauns, ball players, zombies and ushers, how could it not be a success! Bravo!

Narrator: Ben LeibowitzSkits: The group’s creativity breathed life into monthly

themes which included Calendar Girl, Valentine’s Day, “Dancing with the Stars,” St. Patrick’s Day, Passover, Easter,” All in the Family,” June Weddings, July 4th,” Gilligan’s Island,” a Baseball Game, - “Welcome Home Kotter,” Halloween, Dysfunctional Family Dinner, and Christmas.

Cast: This “troupe” of 47 actors was multi-talented, many participating in several acts (order of appearance): Nick Costello, Andy Diadato, Evelyn Folla, Jocelynne Harvey, Bob Kokich, Sheila Goldman, Ilene Menkes, Marco Minuto, Anne Alberta, Rose Ciaburri, Paul Gordon, Debbie Russo, Scotty Deacher, Donna D’Andrea, Anthony D’Andrea, Jackie Lisnow, Jay Lisnow, Pam DeRiso, Harold Johnson, Jeanne Johnson, Debbie Kulback, Denny Rogers, Frank Perricone, Gil Saltzman, Kathy Cush, Joe Besignano, Millie Gottesman, Maria Koumoulis, Dorothy Leibowitz, Carol Ricucci, Bill Tremper, Rita Tremper, Jack Bassi, Mar-cia Saltzman, John Lebrio, Joan Hanrahan, Susan Vohrer, Lucy Minuto, Marsha Barish, Sonia Monahan, Joe DaSilva, Michelle Cohen, Mary Nastro, Paula Schichtel, Eleanor DeGrazia, Tom DeGrazia, and Maria Esposito-Besignano.

Stage Hands, without whom the show would not go on, were Hank Barish, Tom Berringer, Joe Besignano, Bob Callahan, Debbie Kullback, Ken Monahan, Charles Marchak, Joe Mazza and Joe Spizzirri.

MileSToneSBy Helen Kelly

We “hang” our life stories, like socks on a clothesline. They occur throughout our entire lives. And where do these milestones come from? Most trace to our parents, siblings, school, friends, health, education, neighborhood, etc.

One important such milestone for me happened in 1952 in eighth grade. A percentage of all Catholic school eighth grade girls throughout the diocese of Brooklyn took an entrance exam to attend the tuition-free Diocesan High School, Bishop Mc Donnell Memorial H.S. I nearly missed that opportunity.

I wanted to attend this high school so much that I went with my best friend Elaine to a Carmelite Cloister to ask for their prayers. We placed a large net bag of oranges on a turntable, and knelt to pray in the chapel which smelled of incense..

However, my grades from 8A in Feb. 1952 were not usual; about ten points lower per subject. I was really sur-prised and disappointed. I now was ineligible to take the entrance exam as only a handful were to be selected to take the rest and only four would be accepted. I was devastated. I cried, I prayed, but what could I do?

Ironically, my mother attended the newly dedicated Bishop’s for two years two decades earlier, but had to leave to learn secretarial skills to get a job and help her family during the Depression.

One day, some of my classmate friends took a very risky look at our teacher’s grade book during lunch period. They discovered dear Sr. Mary “Rottweiler,” a fearsome person, had misplaced the grades of another student close in alphabetical order and so my report card was a fraud. But what could I do? I could not report on my friends. So, I swallowed my fear and one day in 8B asked the gentle nun I now had in charge of me if I could be excused to visit Sr. Rottweiler’s class and challenge my grades from her grade book. I was terrified.

I was greeted with a growl and “What do you want, interrupting my class?” along with an attempt to publically humiliate me in front of her new 8A class. She ordered me to the blackboard and had me and her class calculate my grades. They even made a mistake in adding which made Sister even angrier. The result was obvious now that she followed the correct column. Sr. Rottweiler was not a bit apologetic or gracious but exited me with a “Get out and don’t you darken my doorway again!”

Well, let me tell you that was a very fearsome but worthwhile milestone because shortly afterwards, I finally took the entrance exam with the other candidates. I had overcome my dread. In a kid’s world, this was a Nancy Drew thriller.

Then the day came in 8B when results were sent to the school and those who passed were summoned to the principal’s office. I feared her, too. However, to my disap-pointment, my name was not announced. The “chosen” all excitedly scurried up to the main office to be confirmed as winners. Again, I was crushed. I did not want to go to public school at all. Catholic school and public school kids were natural enemies. Both high schools in question were all-girls’ schools. There were rumors of Bishop girls being beaten up by Prospect Heights’ girls at the Franklin Ave. IRT subway station near the two schools, the station I would take!

My mom told me I would be just fine at Prospect Heights HS, right around the corner from Bishop Mc Don-nell’s on Eastern Parkway, by the way.

My parents just could not afford a private girls’ Catho-lic high school tuition for me, especially when there was an all girls’ public school available to me. Co-ed Erasmus Hall H.S, a campus- enclosed edifice was in walking distance on Flatbush Avenue. and Church Avenue, but that was never considered. I don’t know why. My story line would certainly be different.

Eventually, justice prevailed, and one of those girls called to the principal’s office came back and told my teacher there had been a mistake. The principal verified each of the accepted student’s name and address. Then they discovered the error. This girl was a good student but average. I do not even think she took the entrance test. Her last name was Hart. Close enough to Barth (?) Then I was sent for to the office, as well, to be confirmed. I was so relieved, but the victory was semi-sweet because of the hassles. Really, how could such a mistake happen? I won-der if Sr. Rottweiler was getting even somehow because 13 year old me had the nerve to challenge her.

P.S. I loved Bishop’s and succeeded very well there. Now, I can see how this ordeal and milestone about Bishop’s shaped my whole future, one step building on the other. To think it almost did not happen!

a Trip To hoMe DepoTby Lorraine Banfi

On a recent occasion, having some extra time on my hands, I paid a visit to Home Depot to pick up some fur-nace filters. Have you ever wandered through one of these stores, up and down the aisles, just to check out what they have to offer? It’s remarkable how many items they sell which can be used for purposes other than those for which they have been designed.

For example, I came upon self-stick linoleum tiles. These are intended as floor covering, but would also be ideal for the area under the sink since they can be cut to size, are waterproof and clean easily. Another potential use could be on top of the wire shelves in the laundry room.

There were many plastic milk cartons which could be used for storage. They could be stacked, and tied together, to resemble bookcases. Placed against a garage wall, they could provide for organization of smaller items. Those of you who have the Curacao model like mine are familiar with the large (just joking) linen closet in the master bed-room. These cartons would fit perfectly in the bottom, stacked two high.

Next, I noticed the four-inch tiles generally used on bathroom walls, and I realized they would be a perfect size for the windowsills in our homes. They’re attractive and provide protection from plants and other decorative items. I chose the white ones to match the woodwork, but they come in a variety of colors.

Then I found myself in the paint department, where I noticed small buckets with handles. These cost only $2 each and would be perfect for grandchildren to play with at the beach

In the key department there were many different types of key rings: large ones and the small cable type. The cable rings would be great for holding tags on luggage. (I don’t trust the plastic ones that have to be looped around.) These could be used to hold tags on almost anything.

The garden department was my next stop. There I found S-shaped white hooks for hanging plants. I bought several and will use them for hanging items from the wire racks in my closets and pantry. In the closets they can hold purses and scarves, and in the pantry plastic supermarket bags.

My next purchase was a Husky utility knife, which is really useful for opening the many boxes I receive from Amazon and QVC. It makes the chore so easy, and after emptying the boxes, I use it to break them down to fit in the recycle container.

One final suggestion: Electric tape comes in many

colors and can be used to patch just about anything. If you have any ideas for multi-purposing, something

designed for one use and perfect for something else. please let me know. [email protected]. I’ll share them in future issues.

Do CoMpuTerS haVe feelinGS?By Cathy Monroe

I asked myself that same question recently when my computer stopped working. Then I was reminded of the time a computer tech was explaining a problem to his supervisor. He explained the problem and said the reason for the failure in a hushed tone, “The computer did it.”

This past summer I spent about a month in Seattle. Because I would be away so long, I shut my computer down and brought my laptop with me. When I returned, my computer was running very slowly. Soon, my router failed. Then the modem failed. After they were both re-placed, my computer continued working very slowly, even after I deleted about 800 documents.

Feeling left out, my printer started eating paper and jamming. Even though I cleared the jams, the printer kept sending me messages about a paper jam. I unplugged it for several days, but no luck.

Seeing all the attention the printer was getting, and shortly after my latest shutdown, my computer was running very, very slow. I started using my laptop exclusively. I guess my computer felt left out because it decided to stop working completely. I have been working on my laptop now and I hope that it doesn’t hear that I am replacing my desktop soon.

There are some advantages of working on the laptop, I can watch TV while working, I can sit in comfort on my couch while my cat Crash sleeps comfortably next to me with her head on my leg.

So, yes, I do believe computers do have feelings. Just look at the recent activity on Wall Street. All the pundits said the first drop was caused by computers. Then, the market continued to drop and with each drop, more com-puters were blamed, not in hushed tones though.

Just a word of advice. Treat your computers well, be careful how you speak to them, don’t let them get jealous of all your other electronic equipment and they will faith-fully do everything you tell them to do, unlike some family members and pets.

During our March meeting we watched a movie about the Philadelphia Flower Show that featured Holland. There were more than 40,000 tulips and many daffodils, hyacinths, orchids and hundreds of other flowers and flow-ering trees. The bridges made with recycled bicycle parts were amazing. Bicycles with baskets full of flowers were everywhere even hanging from the ceiling!

We discussed new plans to see Sayen Garden during their Azalea Festival. More than 100 flowering azaleas and many other beautiful flowers and trees will be seen. After the garden we will all go to lunch. Also thinking about going to Brooklyn Botanical Garden this summer. Also looking forward to Gals On The Go trip to Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

Our tulips were up about 5” before the snow. Not to worry, tulips will make it through the snow and we will soon see their beautiful blooms.

We will be going to The Fairways for a Flower Ar-ranging Program and tea and dessert on April 12. Call me if you want to come.

Master Gardeners in Freehold will have a great plant sale the weekend after Mother’s Day on Friday and Sat-urday.

Remember do not put annual plants in before Mother’s Day. The nights are too cold.

Next meeting is April 17 at 10:00. All are welcome! We say good bye to Winter and hello Spring with flow-

ers every day from now till November!

iTalian aMeriCan CluB noT - So newlY weD GaMe reViewBy Janice LoPresti

On Saturday, February 3, 2018, seventeen tables of our Italian American Club Members joined in on a wonderful night of laughter and camaraderie. It all began at 7:00 P.M. in the Ballroom. Marco, our President greeted the audi-ence. He recognized last year’s participants. Luigi led us in the Pledge. Vic then introduced our Host for the event, Bob McGill. Bob looked ever so handsome in his tuxedo. He warmed up the audience. Then the five couples were introduced as they entered the room. Marie and Sal Croce, Diane and Jerry Grigoli, Joan and Walter Matthies, Chris and John McKenna, Sandy Jacobson and Philip Buchanan.

Questions were posed by Bob to the contestants, al-ternating ladies and men. Two examples were: A perfect wife is one who?? and What percentage of housework does your husband do?? Groups were escorted in and out of the conference room, by Cathy, to keep everything super secret. Vic assisted on stage so we could hear the answers clearly. Rita, Janice and Richard DiRosa acted as Judges for the event. Rich LoPresti was videoing the night’s activities.

The Newly Wed music jingle was being played by Don Marotto. Clearly, it was a Team effort.

Bob kept the evening going with some jokes through-out the night. He interacted with the couples getting them to discuss their answers with humor. He did a wonderful job. It was easy to see that the audience was clearly inter-ested in the answers given by the couples on stage. At the end of the rounds, points were tallied. Sandy and Phillip, who were together for the shortest amount of time, actu-ally won. They received a Gift Card, a Bottle of Wine and a Love book. All the other contestants received the wine and book as well. It takes great courage to be on stage. Candy gifts were also given to our host Bob and the Don, our music coordinator.

Delicious desserts, arranged by Cathy and Richard, were served with coffee and tea. All who attended appar-ently enjoyed the fun night. Next year, we hope to do a different game show.

Thank you to all who helped to make the evening a success. Grazie!!

new MeDiCare CarDSBy Lorraine Banfi

The U.S. Social Security Department is changing our Medicare cards. The Medicare Access and CHIP Reautho-rization Act (MACRA) of 2015, requires the removing of Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from all Medicare cards by April 2019. The new cards offer greater protection because they no longer contain Social Security Numbers. Benefits are not changing just because new cards are be-ing sent out.

A new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on the new cards for Medicare transactions like billing and eligibility status. The new MBI is a unique, eleven-character ID composed of numbers and letters, for example 1EG4-TE5-MK12. The new cards look very much like the old cards with the different looking number. They will be sent out automatically, so there’s no need to do anything, and it will take at least a year to have all the cards sent out, so don’t panic if your friends get theirs before you.

As with many things today, we must be aware of scams, Medicare will never call, email or text you to ask for your personal information. The new cards cost nothing. You won’t be asked to pay a fee to expedite or process shipment of your new card. Medicare will also not contact you via phone, email, or text to discuss your “new benefits”, find out if you’ve received your card, claim your Medicare benefits are in danger of being canceled unless you pay a fee or share information. I’m sure the scammers can think of other scams, so be careful.

are we Too afraiD? By Sheryl Baker

This past summer my husband Bill and I were out painting our foundation (yes we were part of the crowd) and later that day I found a deer tick attached to the back of my right shoulder. I was dressed appropriately for the project with long pants tucked rather unattractively into knee high socks and a long sleeved shirt tucked into my pants. Despite the heat of the day (I was already afraid of ticks) I entered the arena like a gladiator prepared for battle. Most of the painting I did was on the rear patio and I spent some time on one side of the house carefully crouching so that I did not make contact with the grass. Perfect.

One of my little fears came to pass that day and only served to reinforce that I had not been careful enough and that extra precautions must be taken in the future. All fears were now underscored and there was now confirmation that danger lurked in every corner. Oh my!

For the rest of the summer and fall I was determined not to let the ticks win. I no longer walked under trees, did not step on the grass unless absolutely necessary and always sprayed myself with bug spray that probably contain enough carcinogens to kill a small country.

In addition to the bug spray I covered myself in lotion containing a sunscreen. I used to apply spf15 but found out from listening to friends that I was woefully under protected. You are apparently not fully covered unless you slather every inch of your body with spf30. So now I spent the remainder of the spring, summer and fall seasons covered in a white pasty lotion smelling like a can of Deep Woods Off. Delightful! I will probably never see natural sun induced vitamin D again.

So I started thinking about all the things people have become so afraid of in recent years. How did I go from a fearless bravado teenager to a frightened senior? From talking to and observing my peers it seems that we share a lot of the same – shall we say “little fears.”

This topic reminds of the popular movie “As Good As It Gets” starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt. If you haven’t seen it - put it on your list. It’s about a successful writer with all sorts of fears and fetishes. He steps over cracks, eats in restaurants with wrapped plastic utensils, and refuses to wear a restaurant provided jacket to meet the dressing code. He eventually finds some relief from his fears by involving himself in the lives of two warm caring quirky companions.

There are, however, the really big fears that we’re all aware of: nuclear war, biological attacks, terrorism, serious health ailments and the big granddaddy of them all – death. But I think that since we can’t do too much to control these behemoths we may tend to focus on the small fears, the ones we have a shot at - the ones we can more easily control. In other words “a distraction.”

We carry hand sanitizer with us everywhere we go. We have it in our purses, in our cars and in our offices. A hand shake is now looked upon as a lethal weapon. We buy bottled water and filter our tap water {I know some-one who is so concerned with water quality that she filters bottled water).

There are sanitary wipes in the grocery store to use on the cart handles while we traipse through the isles filled with other items of terror. Let’s cut to the chase with this one and just list the things we have been told to look out for: The bagged salads are probably unsafe, most of the produce is covered with insecticides, make sure all the bottles have pop up lids or safety seals and beware of the salmonella coating the raw meats. I could keep going but I think you’re getting the point.

Now that I have gotten older I feel as if I need to watch every step that I take. Doesn’t it seem that we should be more carefree the older we get? Yes, there are those of us who may be scuba diving in shark filled waters in countries the rest of us have to look up on maps, a few taking great photographs of rain forests and remote mountains, and there are some courageous souls travelling the globe eat-ing tarantulas and bats. I sincerely take my hat off to them.

To add to our misery we invite the media into our homes every day on the television, radio and internet. There was never so much fear mongering and such a continuous onslaught of things to worry about. There’s a constant barrage of new pills, new illnesses and new scams. Our seas are rising, our politicians are all corrupt and most of us will not have enough money should we happen to live to a hundred and fifty. As much as we realize how we are being manipulated we become almost addicted to the rhetoric. We might also begin to feel that if we don’t listen we may be missing out on important information. More stuff to watch out for.

When I was growing up in Brooklyn we drank soda (yes, with sugar), no safety seals, got scratched by the backyard cats (no fear of unusual feline bacteria), drank water from the tap, didn’t use sun lotion on a daily basis, rarely washed our hands, brought peanut butter sandwiches to school, and never used bug spray unless it was on the tomato plants.

I for one am ready for some changes just like the character in the aforementioned movie. I am going to face my fears this summer. I will go outside without layers of clothes, suntan lotion, bug spray or even a large brimmed hat. I will drink a large glass of cool water from the tap. I will play with the dog, give her a biscuit and keep myself from washing my hands until I’m ready for lunch. I could keep going but I think you’re getting the point!

You Can’T JuDGe a BooK BY iT’S CoVerBy Donna D’Andrea

On our recent cruise on the Queen Elizabeth, we were assigned to sit with another couple at dinner. To look at her she was a real plain jane, perhaps bordering somewhat on a Calamity Jane. She appeared a bit disheveled, no makeup, dressed more for a diner than a dining room, although her husband wore a jacket and tie every night. His ties, mostly copies of artwork bought at museum gift shops, were good conversation openers.

I thought to myself, “oh boy” for a brief second, but after the initial introductions and small talk, we found them to be very interesting and warm. Their names were David and Mary Lou and they were married over 50 years. He was a retired family doctor while she held a phD in the science field, and they were taking the full four month world cruise, which we were taking a 19 day segment of. So they were on the cruise before us and would continue on after we got off.

Everyday he attended different lectures onboard while she read books on her kindle, and they would tell us about it at dinner. After dinner they retired to their cabin while we danced, took in a show, or played in the casino. Our

worlds couldn’t have been farther apart, yet for those couple of hours at dinner each night we came together and appre-ciated this couple for their intelligence, sense of humor, and warmth, and they seemed to enjoy our company as well. They even offered to make us a key to their condo in Florida (which of course we didn’t accept).

We emailed them when we got home to see how their cruise was going and how their new dinner mates were for the next segment. She said that the couple that was be-ing escorted to their table took one look at them, stopped dead in their tracks, and asked to speak to the maitre’d to be moved. How cruel, I thought. What’s the big deal? It was their loss, because they missed an opportunity to get to know someone different than themselves, and to see and experience their goodness and beauty within.

They had a positive influence on us, and after we got home Anthony even read one of the books they told us about, called Killers of the Flower Moon. He was really engrossed; I’ve never seen him sit in the sunroom for any length of time to read a book before. Just goes to show you that “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover” in more ways than one.

lauGhTer iS The ShorTeST DiSTanCe BeTween Two people

By Helen KellyI know his to be true. In 1960, this nice guy I met took

me to see psycho, a then current blockbuster. Unless you are foreign-born, you know this film. The director, Alfred Hitchcock, was a crazy genius. His weird thrillers include The Birds, Vertigo, and rear window. What horrid im-ages were seared on our generation’s psyche. The weekend following our viewing, we were at a house party down the Shore and hunkered down in a spare room, sitting on the floor, backs braced against the wall. We were still shocked by the movie.

The one image we couldn’t handle was of the bald-headed detective slowly mounting the stairs to the second floor of the big Bates’ house, searching so vulnerably for Janet Leigh’s shower hacker at The Bates Motel. The cam-era zoned in on his big bald head and you knew something bad was about to happen to it. And it did. As we scrunched down in the velvet theater seats, tighter and tighter, sud-denly the hideous whirling screech of a madman pulsed over us and a sole hand gripping a butcher knife appeared on screen, larger than life, quickly plunging deep into the bald guy’s dome like a watermelon. It was hideous and it took us by surprise and by shock. We were as helpless

as the bloody bald guy whose blood was everywhere on screen. For the next few minutes, I plastered my eyelids shut, unable to process the horror. I imagine Mr. Hitchcock reveled in his shocking film.

So, my question is, “Why was it that reviewing this scene suddenly turned hysterically funny?” Were we sicko’s like Alfred? Was our fear expressing itself in uncontrol-lable, hysterical laughter. Both of us were rolling on the floor. We had succumbed to a ghoulish take on the madness of Norman Bates

The horror we felt was matched by our contagious spasms of laughter. I laughed so hard, so long, that my ribs ached. This lasted all night long. Only dawn, filtering through the windows sobered our moods. When I got home after the weekend, I told my mother about the laughing episode. “That’s the man you’re going to marry,” she replied. And I did.

I like laughing but hate being scared. I wonder if Alfred had loosened up some of my repressions to make me laugh at the horrible scenes in psycho? In 1960, I had just gradu-ated from college after 16 years of religious education. In that case, I probably should be grateful!

fSSK woMen’S CluB MeeTinGfebruary 19, 2018

By Alice Hesterhagen and Sue Mignemi

The FSSK Women’s Club continued the “Heart” theme representing the american heart association at our February meeting with lots of heart balloons and hearts decorating the tables.

Thank you to the Refreshment Committee chaired by Marion Martinos and Kathy Orecchio for their hard work in setting up our lovely tables and goodies. There were plenty of cakes and cookies provided by our members along with coffee, tea, etc.

Thanks also goes out to Rose Ciaburri for recruiting flavian the Mind reader who was both entertaining and astounding. Flavian said energy from his audience directs him in the selection of the correct answers.

For Flavian’s first trick, he chose Chris McKenna to select four members to guess one number from 1 to 9. Flavian had four numbers written inside of an envelope. After the four members said their numbers, the envelope was opened and the four numbers - in correct order - were listed on the paper!

Trick # 2 - Flavian prepared a list of 50 words and chose Lynn Matusow to focus on the list and pick out one word. After a shaky start, Lynn focused and chose her word. Flavian wrote PEACH on a paper and out of Lynn’s view, showed it to the audience. He then had Lynn say the word she had chosen - PEACH!

Trick # 3 - Flavian asked four members four differ-ent questions. Maria Esposito-Besignano was asked her first pet’s name, Sheila Goldman was asked her favorite actress, Renay Bassi was asked what kitchen appliance she thought of when thinking of her husband. Susan Bittner was asked the name of the first boy who kissed her. The answers were: Baci, Claudette Colbert, an egg slicer (yep, egg slicer) and Zuck. Flavian wrote the four answers and enclosed them in four envelopes which Felice guarded. Each member gave her answer and Flavian was correct with each answer. (egg slicer???)

Trick # 4 - Flavian asked Nancy Fulcher if Chris was morphed into a Disney cartoon character, which one would she be. He was correct again: Donald Duck!

We were all mystified! How did he do it! The 50/50 prize was won by Linda Marchak. Half of

the 50/50 proceeds will go to the american heart as-sociation.

The wine and chocolate gift basket, designed by Linda Marotto, was won by Renay Bassi. Helen Kelly won the CPR Class gift basket presented by Janet Marzocca. That will enable 10 friends of Helen’s choosing to learn CPR.

The membership found the night very entertaining!

Men’S CluB ST paTriCK’S DaY DinnerBy Joe Conti

Our annual St. Patrick’s fundraiser went in a whole different direction this year. We catered a traditional St Patrick’s Day meal from Jacques and didn’t do the cook-ing ourselves. Instead of Irish musicians, we had a DJ who mixed things up but did include many Irish tunes. We leave the results of these changes to the attendees. The leader of these food driven fundraisers, Frank Muhlon was recuperat-ing in the hospital and Men’s Club President Joe Martinos passed on Frank’s best wishes for all to enjoy the evening.

Although this is a Men’s Club event, it could never happen without the ladies. They prepare the tables, serve

the food, help with the cleanup and much more, and are an invaluable asset. Most of the guys who help are fairly visible but some are not. Every year Joe Gironda drives to Brick to pick up the pastry, this year he was assisted by Sal Croce, and we remember Joe DiMaggio sold Mr. Coffee, well Tony Scotto is MR. COFFEE, hidden in the kitchen slaving over the coffee urns. Pat Gallagher, the original coffee maven is usually at Tony’s side.

We thank everyone who attended, hope you had an enjoyable time and we all raised money for student schol-arships and worthy local causes.

GalS on The Go

Tour MaKe a wiSh CaSTleBy Evelyn Folla

On Tuesday, March 13th, 30 members of the Gals toured the Make A Wish Castle in Monroe. Make A Wish Foundation of New Jersey grants the wish of a child di-agnosed with a life threatening medical condition. We were greeted by the President CEO, Tom Weatherall, an enthusiastic upbeat wonderful gentleman who gave us a brief overview of the castle and the foundation. Tom introduced us to Mat McGovern, the Director, Planned & Major Gifts and to Mariam Salih, a coordinator who explained the process of granting wishes. The entrance and first floor lobby are impressive and the major ballroom for charitable functions is located on this level. Our tour of the Castle was amazing, the upper floor consisted of beautiful artistic decorated rooms that were designed and worked on by artesian from Walt Disney. Walls consisted of beautiful images that children would enjoy seeing from fantasy to scientific to fairy tale images and each room is beautifully decorated with castle like furniture. Wishes granted range from destinations like a trip to Hawaii or Walt Disney locations or a new pet puppy, a complete uniform like a policeman a trip to see the Northern Lights in Newfoundland or even a visit to the Pope in Italy.

Lunch for our group was a fun filled long table at Baker’s American Grill which is located just at the corner from the Make a Wish Castle on Perrineville Rd. It was a very inspiring afternoon.

On Wednesday, March 14, 2018, Monte Carlo Casino was in our ballroom in all of its glory, style and festive atmosphere. 102 of our Members were engaged in having a phenomenal night of fabulous fun, delicious food and the art of winning. If you peeked in, you would see everyone having a wonderful time. Our colorful centerpieces with lights, really sparked the ambience in the room. They were given out as prizes at the end of the evening to twelve lucky guests as an extra bonus give away. The night was absolutely about Giving to Our Members.

We started off with eating our main course of salad, chicken and two pasta dishes. No lines, all went well. We had great servers, Joe and Kathleen Spizzirri, Louise and Richard Maczka and Jane Magrino. After that, there would be plenty of hot and cold food available for you to enjoy at your own leisure. Catering by Pezzolanti’s arranged for by Richard and Cathy DiRosa. Way to Go!

Marco, our President greeted everyone. Luigi led us in the Pledge. I introduced Rob, our Pit Boss, from Full House Casino Entertainment. He did a remarkable job as host for the evening. After a brief orientation, Rob announced that the Tables were open for all to enjoy. Everyone would have the opportunity to play at the tables, even if you did not know how. The expert and professional dealers were there to guide you on the rules of the game, with absolutely no pressure. Of course, the seasoned players were eager to demonstrate their skills as well. We had BlackJack, Three Card Poker, Let It Ride, Craps, Roulette and Two Slots Machines for fun.

After coffee and our scrumptious St. Joseph’s pastries were served, arranged for by Luigi, we moved into the sec-ond part of the event. Twenty-One prizes, most solicited by Margaret Gordon, were raffled off. Once you finished your playing at the tables, you cashed your chips in for raffle tickets. Then you had the opportunity to place your tickets into the gift bags you liked. To name a few of the Super prizes offered: Golf Passes and Carts from Lakewood Country Club and Gamblers Ridge, Two NBA authentically signed Basketballs, 50 inch RCA 4K Flatscreen TV, Alexa, Gift Cards from a wide variety of restaurants and local establishments, Count

Basie Theatre-Gershwin Concert Tickets, Uncle Vinnie’s Comedy Club Tickets and a One Night Stay in a Family suite at Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos. What a wonder-ful selection of Prizes to win! In addition, we had a 50/50 raffle (Vic and Joe) with three extra prizes after the money was given out. The proceeds will be going to Scholarships for two Italian American High School Students in New Jersey. How great is that!

Special Thanks to all who helped make the gift baskets (Fran, Cathy, Rita, Janice and Margaret), shop for supplies (Joe), did the Art Work (Fran), set up (Walter & others) and clean up (Frank, Lucy & others), as well as all of you who attended. Thanks also to Richard for videoing. We could not have done it without all your help! A Night to remember for the Italian American Club! Grazie and Kudos for a Successful Affair!!

Spring is here and with it the annual fl ower explosion! Here are a few things you can do to make your fl ower images have more impact.

Get low and shoot the fl owers at their level. If you can isolate an individual bloom against a plain background it will have more personality.

When shooting a fl ower bed, try to highlight a portion of the bed. Always shoot from a few different angles to see how the light changes the look of the fl owers. Try getting some front light, side light , and backlight if possible.

If the fl owers are against a wall or building, you can insert a plain background (such as a large card) to make the image look more professional. Don’t forget fl owering trees and shrubs.

If you have a fi eld of fl owers inserting a person (especially a grandchild) will add interest to the shot. Don’t forget your rule of thirds!

That’s it for this month. As always you can email me at [email protected] with any photographic questions. See more of my images you can visit my site at www.Kirmsphotography.com. Remember to keep shooting and trying to improve your images, but always have fun with your camera.
