NEW Student Drop off Procedures at T.I.S.

To help ensure the safety of our students, the driveway and parking lot in front of T.I.S. are now closed to

traffic. Below are two photographs depicting new student drop off and pick up procedures at T.I.S. The

location of the morning drop off and afternoon pick up/visitor parking lot has been moved to the lot

directly in front of Parker School.

All visitors to T.I.S. as well as parents dropping off and picking up students must use the Recreation

Department driveway, located on Old Post Road. The former visitor parking area, located in front of

T.I.S., will now be used for staff parking. See figure 1 below.

Figure 2 below illustrates new morning student drop off procedures. Student drop off occurs between

8:30 and 8:50 each morning. When dropping your child off at school please adhere to the procedures

outlined below.

1.Enter the school complex via Recreation Department Drive located just past T.I.S. on Old Post Road.

2. Students must be dropped off at the designated student drop off area.

4. All students must exit cars from passenger side doors.

3. Upon exiting cars, students will walk along a series of crosswalks leading toward T.I.S.

4. All cars must exit the parking area according to Figure 2

marked tardy after that. The school day ends at 3:20.

8:50, please walk your child into the office and sign him/her in (regardless of whether there are

buses still unloading or not).

Late Start Hours (90-minute delays): School begins at 10:20. The day ends at 3:20

Early Dismissal Hours: Students come to school at 8:50 and are dismissed at 1:30

Visitor and Parent-Pickup Parking is in the UPPER lot this year. Visitors are asked not to park

in the lot in front of the school. Enter through Tolland Recreation Drive, located beyond the

school.

Parent Pick-up: Parent Pick-up will be in the gym again this year. Parents will park in the upper

will not suffice. The nurses communicate with the front office concerning absences.

Notes: If your child will be have a consistent schedule the full year (i.e., will be picked up every

Tuesday at dismissal), you can send in a year-long note, eliminating the need to send in a note

each time. If your child’s schedule changes in any way from the normal, please send a note in

with the following information: your child’s name, the teacher’s name and a detailed description

(i.e., will be picked up at 2:00 today). Please note that if anyone other than a child’s parent is

picking them up, a note must be sent by the parent! No student will be released to a non-

guardian without a written note.

Grade 5 Chorus Invitation All Grade 5 students,

You are invited to participate in the grade 5 chorus. Fifth

graders participating in chorus will sing and perform traditional,

multicultural and contemporary music as well as round 2-part and

small group pieces.

Just a few things to think about when making your decision; I

would like to remind everyone that chorus is a full year commitment

and students are expected to complete the entire year once they

join. Chorus is graded on the report card just like any other class.

Attendance is a large part of that grade. There will be a winter

and a spring concert which we expect the students to participate

in.

This year we are trying something new. In order to avoid

having the students miss recess for chorus, I am having chorus at

8:20-8:50 on Thursdays. Students who cannot attend the

Thursday morning chorus can attend chorus Day 1 during recess.

Occasionally, students will be asked to attend both sections of

chorus in order to be fully prepared for the concert. Below is a

form for you to fill out to help us find the best option for your

child and our choral program.

All students who are interested in grade five chorus are

asked to attend an introductory meeting on Friday, September

7, during recess in the TIS lecture hall. Thursday morning

chorus will begin Thursday, September 13.

Thank you,

Ms. Baker Please fill out and return by: September 6, 2012

GRADE BAND WELCOME PACKET

OVERVIEW

Part 1: Welcome letter

Part 2: SIGN-UP Sheet (*to be returned to Mr. Golder-Novick)

Part 3: Lesson Schedule Form (*to be returned to Mr. Golder-

Part 4: Information for “Gerry’s Music” (*bring to Instrument

Part 5: Information for “Music & Arts” (*bring to Instrument Night)

(see the following pages)

Dear Grade 4 Students and Parents,

Welcome back to TIS! My name is Mr. Golder-Novick and I will be teaching 4th

grade band this

year. I encourage any 4th

grader who is interested in playing a band instrument to join in the fun!

The instruments offered are: TRUMPET, TROMBONE, BARITONE HORN, ALTO SAX,

TENOR SAX, FLUTE, and PERCUSSION (bells and practice pad). In an effort to help students

and parents better understand the program a 4th

Grade Instrument Night has been scheduled for:

Date/Time: WEDESDAY September 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Place : T.I.S. Cafeteria (upstairs “APR”)

This meeting is designed to provide parents and students with information about the lesson

program, student expectations, and renting band instruments. We will have two different

instrument companies at the meeting. Information for these companies is attached. PLEASE

BRING BOTH PACKETS WITH YOU TO THE INSTRUMENT NIGHT MEETING. By all

means, if you want to get ahead of the game and get an instrument NOW, please go ahead and do

so. The packets for the two instrument companies are our recommendations for purchasing an

instrument. However, you may purchase an instrument wherever you want.

Along with purchasing an instrument, it is also REQUIRED for students to purchase the

“Standard of Excellence Book One” (AKA “the red book”). It is also highly encouraged that you

purchase a music stand. These items are both included in the two information packets for the

instrument companies.

*RIGHT NOW IT IS URGENT FOR STUDENTS TO CHOOSE AN INSTRUMENT. The

students have seen demonstrations on all of the instruments and they need to make a decision.

The sign-up form is on the next page and needs to be turned in NO LATER THAN FRIDAY,

SEPTEMBER 7th

. The students should know what instrument they want to play BEFORE

instrument night. This way, instrument night can be used to decide which music store to

purchase the instrument. The instrument rental packets (attached) are to filled out either before,

during, or immediately following instrument night.

If you are unable to attend the instrument night, you may fill out the packets on your own. There

are also websites for both companies: www.gerrys-music.com and www.musicarts.com. Feel

free also to send me an email with any questions. Thanks so much and I can’t wait to get the

band started!

Sincerely,

Mr. Golder-Novick

Band Sign-Ups 2012-2013

Joining the Instrumental Program is a serious, yearlong commitment. After the trial period

(when most rental contracts expire), if you have a concern about your child continuing in band,

please contact me, and we can discuss your child’s development and reconsider participation in

the program. After this trial period, dropping out is not an option.

Please return the bottom portion of this page on or before FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7. Thank you

very much!

again this year in band! It is going to be so much fun! To help get the

scheduling process started as early as possible, please make sure to

This year, the small group lesson schedule will be different. Instead of

using a rotating schedule, small group lessons will occur during the

TEPTO’s UN-Fundraiser

2012-2013

Dear TEPTO Families and Friends,

“The Un-fundraiser” is a stress-free and tax-deductible program that has raised thousands of dollars

for our Tolland elementary schools.

As we all know, budget cuts continue to hurt everyone, especially our schools. Our fundraising efforts

are more important than ever. One of our goals is to continue to provide the wonderful programs that

our students enjoy and the “Un-fundraiser” helps do just that.

Why have we chosen “The Un-fundraiser”?

No door-to-door sales by students

No sales competitions between neighbors and friends

All donations are tax deductible

Donations are eligible for corporate matching funds (check with your employer)

100% of the funds go directly to TEPTO with no fees to outside companies

This school year, TEPTO will spend $58,000 to provide our children with field trips and assemblies,

recess equipment and books; and the staff of Birch Grove and Tolland Intermediate School will receive

classroom and curriculum support.

If you wish to contribute, please clip the coupon below and save a copy of this portion for your tax
