THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Celebrant: O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the
devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this
hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power
and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where
he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
People: Amen.
THE FIRST READING Read by Mike Becraft. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17 Please be seated.
As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him,
we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed,
either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day
of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not
come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one
destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god
or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring
himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was
still with you? But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters
beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through
sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called
you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of
our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the
traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now
may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through
grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen
them in every good work and word.
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

HYMN 293 (stanza 1) I sing a song of the saints of God
Sung by all, standing.
Words: Lesbia Scott (1898-1986), alt.
Music: Grand Isle, John Henry Hopkins (1861-1945)

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 20:27-38
Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked
him a question, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a
wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his
brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then
the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died
childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife
will the woman be? For the seven had married her." Jesus said to them, "Those who
5
belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered
worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor
are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels
and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the
dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks
of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now
he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive."
Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
HYMN 293 (stanzas 2 and 3) I sing a song of the saints of God
Sung by all.
THE SERMON The Rev. Sarah Taylor Miller
Please be seated.
THE NICENE CREED
Please stand.
Celebrant and People:
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only
Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from
the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose
again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated
at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the
Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the
Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We
acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. AMEN.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Led by Dace Vidins.
Please remain standing.

your life to the world; strengthen, bless, and guide us to make you known by word

THE HOLY COMMUNION
OFFERTORY ANTHEM
God, who set the spheres in motion William Bradley Roberts (b. 1947)
Text and tune commissioned by St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square on the
occasion of its 200th anniversary
The Parish Choir
God, who set the spheres in motion, times and seasons, dusk and dawn, ebb and tide
of stream and ocean, turn and dance of star and sun, all the turning of creation
pulses from Your heart sublime; everything, it has its season, every purpose has its
time.
Thus when days and lives are paling, death draws near us to embrace, may our
peaceful hearts unfailing trust in Your unchanging grace. As the winter turns at
solstice, as the night turns toward the day, all Your blessed seasons show us: Life is
changed, not swept away.
God, You bless us with companions, sisters, brothers, in this place; we have sung
them to Your mansions where they dwell in Your embrace. Life in Christ leaves
holy pathways; saintly signs lead us to see as their blessed lives bear witness: All
streams run into the sea.
Thus through all the times and seasons to Your name we lift our praise; even at the
grave we sing it: Alleluia, all our days. Alleluia, for the newness hidden under
twilight’s gray; alleluia, for the promise: Life is changed, not swept away.

A PRAYER FOR STEWARDSHIP
Celebrant and People:
Gracious and everlasting God, the giver of all good gifts, you have blessed us
and our parish abundantly. Grant us the hope to dream and the courage to
live into our possibilities. Make us faithful stewards, both for the provision of
our necessities and for the relief of those who are in need. Bless the efforts of
our Annual Giving this year to extend the work of spiritual renewal in our
church and community of faith. Through Jesus Christ, who gave all of
himself, we offer this prayer. Amen.

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to
you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
For in the multitude of your saints you have surrounded us with a great cloud of
witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race
that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that never
fades away.
10
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with
all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of
your Name:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD (S-130) Franz Peter Schubert
11
Music: From Deutsche Messe, Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828); arr. Richard Proulx (b. 1937)

Please stand or kneel.
Celebrant: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and,
when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your
mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to
live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your
will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took
bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to
them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink
it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Celebrant: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise
and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you
these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your
Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that
we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy,
and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your
eternal kingdom.
12
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in
the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and
for ever.
People: AMEN.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Celebrant and People:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD
Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!
Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ
died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
MUSIC AT THE COMMUNION
Anthem O quam gloriosum Tomás Luis de Victoria
(1549-1611)
The Parish Choir
O quam gloriosum est regnum, in quo cum Christo gaudent omnes sancti, amicti
stolis albis, sequuntur Agnum quocumque ierit.
O how glorious is the kingdom in which all the saints rejoice with Christ, clad in
robes of white, they follow the Lamb wherever he goes.
All are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us. Our tradition is to receive
both bread and wine, sharing in the common cup. Please assist the chalice bearer by
guiding the cup to your lips. You may also intinct by dipping the wafer into the
chalice. You may wish to receive the bread only. Receiving the bread only is a valid
and acceptable way to share in Holy Communion. After consuming the wafer,
simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive
the wine. Gluten-free wafers are available on request from the communion minister.
If you are feeling sick, please refrain from receiving the wine and be mindful of those near
you when passing the peace or shaking hands as you enter and exit the church.

BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
Thursday, November 10,
at St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square
Public program is 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
and 1:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Every two years the Episcopal Church and its two historically
black affiliated educational institutions come together to
celebrate their historic relationship. The President, students,
faculty and staff of St. Augustine’s University are traveling
from Raleigh, North Carolina, and the President, students,
faculty and staff of Voorhees College are traveling from
Denmark, South Carolina, for the event. This provides an
opportunity for students to share with the public the reasons
why they chose to attend Historically Black institutions and
their challenges, opportunities, and dreams for the
future. The public also learns of the continuing value of
Black Educational institutions in the United States and in
particular those started by Episcopalians hundreds of years
ago. The day includes a Keynote Address by the Presiding
Bishop, The Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry at 10:30
a.m. and plenary presentations by Dr. Everett B. Ward,
President of St. Augustine’s, and Dr. Franklin Evans,
President of Voorhees. Choirs from both institutions will
provide musical offerings at the event.

TWO EASY WAYS TO HELP OTHERS
• The empty casserole pans in the Parish House are waiting to
be filled with food for our partnership with So Others Might
Eat (S.O.M.E.). St. John’s is committed to sending food once
a month to S.O.M.E. to be served in a meal program for
homeless and low-income persons in D.C. Participation is
easy and flexible! Pick up an empty casserole pan in the
Parish House, fill it with a casserole, and drop it off in the
freezer near the dining room soda machine. A parishioner
picks up all the casseroles once a month and drops them off at
the meal site.
• When you travel, bring back unopened toiletry items for
homeless shelters. Place them in the basket in the connector
between the Church and the Parish House.

SING WITH THE PARISH CHOIR
The Parish Choir of St. John’s, a dedicated corps of volunteer
musicians who provide musical leadership for the 9:00 a.m.
Eucharist each Sunday morning, welcomes new members.
Midweek rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 7:15 p.m.-
8:30 p.m., with sandwiches provided at 6:45 p.m. There is a
straightforward voice trial for admission, but the main
qualification is your interest in serving St. John’s in its music
program. Please be in touch with Michael Lodico at
[email protected] if you are interested in
singing with the Parish Choir or talking about the program.
PLANNING YOUR LEGACY
Is there a place in your estate planning for St. John’s? Often
people think that when they have children or other family
members that they want to provide a legacy to, they can’t also
decide to leave a financial legacy to other causes or
organizations that are important to them. Have you assessed
your “legacy” recently? Have you factored in any insurance
policies, real estate and investments that would be part of that
legacy? Could there be room to leave 5-10% to organizations
that you care about such as St. John’s? Each and every gift
that St. John’s receives makes a difference. Whether it’s
naming St. John’s in your will or trust or as a partial
beneficiary on a retirement plan, insurance policy or
annuity…your generosity will live on and might set a beautiful
example to your heirs as well. For more information or if
you have questions, please contact Lisa Kirchenbauer at
QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION
As part of the PATH Act of 2015, Congress has permanently
reinstated the Qualified Charitable Distribution which allows
tax payers over 70 ½ to redirect up to $100,000 of their annual
Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their IRA
accounts (only) to a qualified charity. If you are making
contributions to St. John’s Annual Giving or Capital
Campaign, this could have a positive impact on your income
tax planning. You can direct some or all of your RMD to one
or more charities.
If you are interested in learning more, please contact Lisa
Kirchenbauer at [email protected]
and be sure to consult with your tax advisor to determine
the impact on your personal financial situation.
PASTORAL CARE AT ST. JOHN’S CHURCH
Praying for the sick and those in need is an important part of
our life together. We invite you to add yourself, family, or
friends to the parish prayer list. Other than birthdays,
anniversaries, and deaths, names added to the prayer list will
appear for four consecutive weeks. If you would like the name
to be on the prayer list for a shorter or longer period of time,
please let us know. We are going to begin listing in
parentheses the name of the person requesting prayers for
family and friends who are not members of the congregation.
To add a name to the prayer list, please contact the Rev.
Andy Olivo at [email protected].

NEW OUTREACH COMMITTEE MINISTRY – THE OLIVE OIL MINISTRY
St. John’s is partnering with the Olive Oil Ministry to provide the opportunity to purchase fair trade
olive to support Palestinian farmers and the Tent of Nations. The Olive Oil Ministry is an all-
volunteer ecumenical project sponsored by the Middle East Committee of Westmoreland
Congregational United Church of Christ of Bethesda in partnership with 18 other congregations in the
Washington area.
Earnings from the sale of Canaan Fair Trade Products support the Tent of Nations, an organic farm
near Bethlehem that seeks to build bridges between Jewish and Muslim communities. Purchase of the
olive oil raises awareness of the challenges facing Palestinian farmers and creates a market for
Palestinian products.
To order, fill out the form below and return with a check made out to WCUCC to the Outreach
mailbox in the Parish Hall front office. We will take orders through Sunday, December 4.
Purchases will be distributed after both services on Sunday, December 11 and Sunday, December 18.
The Olive Oil Tasting will be on Sunday, November 20
For questions about ordering, distribution, or for more information about the ministry and the
organization which it supports, contact Preston Cherouny at [email protected] or Jessica
Sanchez [email protected]).

IF YOU ARE VISITING
a warm welcome to St. John’s.
We are delighted to have you worship with us. Please let us know who you are and how we can best serve you
by filling out a “Welcome” card and leaving it in the offering plate or with an usher or greeter, and joining us for
the coffee hour following the service.
We welcome families with young children at our worship services. Children’s Worship Bulletins are available
from the ushers as you enter the nave. For parishioners and visitors alike, nursery care for children under age
three is provided on Sunday from 8:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The nursery is located next to the elevator on the
lower level of the Parish House. Take the elevator or stairs to the basement. We also offer Church School at
10:45 a.m. for children and youth from age three through tenth grade on the second floor of the Parish House.
All persons, including children, are invited to take part in the Holy Eucharist. Parents may decide if their
children receive the bread and/or wine. Children may instead signal their desire to be blessed by the priest at the
altar by crossing their arms across their chest.

Welcome!
AT ST. JOHN’S CHURCH, we believe Christ is calling us to be a renewed church in a changing world. Empowered by the Spirit of God, we respond to Jesus’ call as we deepen our bond with Christ through worship, become a community where all are accepted, and work together as laity and clergy to do God’s work in the world.
ST JOHN’S WAS ORGANIZED IN 1815 to serve as a parish church for Episcopalians residing in the
neighborhoods in the west end of the District of Columbia. Its cornerstone was laid on September 14, 1815, and it was consecrated on December 27, 1816. Beginning with James Madison, every person who has held the office of President of the United States has attended a service at the church. Several Presidents have been communicants. Thus, St. John’s is often referred to as the “Church of the Presidents.” Pew 54 is the President’s Pew. The architect of the church was Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who assisted in the rebuilding of the U.S. Capitol and the White House after the War of 1812. Twenty-five of the stained glass windows in St. John’s were designed and executed by artisans of the noted Lorin firm of Chartres, France.
BROCHURES DESCRIBING PARISH LIFE, the history of St. John’s, and the Episcopal denomination can be
found in the church entrance. If you are visiting, please fill out the visitor information card found at the end of each pew to enable us to welcome you personally into the life of our parish.
ST JOHN’S WEBSITE WWW.STJOHNS-DC.ORG has up-to-date information about the Church including the
weekly calendar, the Sunday service schedule, Adult Forum speakers and topics, the music calendar and newsworthy events.
