Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came a few weeks after Jesus’ death and resur- rection, there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningfully called “the church”. Thus, from an historical perspective, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. This is also true from a spiritual point of view, since the Spirit brings the church into existence and enlivens it. So Pentecost is the birthday of the Church! The English word “Pentecost” is a trans- literation of the Greek word pentekos- tos, which means “fifty”. The importance of the Day of Pentecost is that because of the death and resur- rection of Jesus, the Spirit was given to all his followers to empower them to spread his Gospel in word and deed. St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 4th June 2017

Opening Hymn

Holy Spirit, come confirm us

in the truth that Christ makes known;

we have faith and understanding

through your helping gifts alone.

Holy Spirit, come console us

Come as advocate to plead,

loving Spirit from the Father,

grant in Christ the help we need.

Holy Spirit, come renew us,

come yourself to make us live:

holy, through your loving presence,

holy, through the gifts you give.

Holy Spirit, come possess us,

you the love of Three in One,

Holy Spirit of the Father,

Holy Spirit of the Son.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 4th May 2017

Offertory Hymn

Spirit divine, attend our prayers

and make this house your home,

descend with all your gracious powers:

O come, great Spirit, come.

Come as the fire: and purge our hearts

like sacrificial flame;

let our whole life an offering be

to our Redeemer's name.

Come as the dove: and spread your wings,

the wings of peaceful love,

and let your Church on earth become

blest as the Church above.

Come as the wind, with rushing sound

and pentecostal grace,

that all of woman born may see

the glory of your face.

Spirit divine, attend our prayers,

make this lost world your home;

descend with all your gracious powers:

O come, great Spirit, come.

Andrew Reed 1787-1862 alt.

TIS406

Gradual Hymn

Come Holy Spirit, our souls inspire

and lighten with your heavenly fire:

you the anointing spirit are,

on us your sevenfold gifts you pour.

Your blesséd unction from above

is comfort, life and fire of love;

enable with perpetual light

the dullness of our blinded sight;

anoint and cheer our mortal face

with the abundance of your grace;

keep far our foes; give peace at home;

where you are guide no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,

and you with both to be but one;

that through the ages all along

this may be our endless song:

Praise to your eternal merit,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Anon, Latin 9th cent.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 4th June 2017

Final Hymn

O thou who camest from above

the pure celestial fire to impart,

kindle a flame of sacred love

on the mean altar of my heart.

There let it for thy glory burn

with inextinguishable blaze,

and trembling to its source return,

in humble prayer and fervent praise.

Jesus, confirm my heart's desire

to work, and speak, and think for thee;

still let me guard the holy fire,

and still stir up thy gift in me,

ready for all thy perfect will,

my acts of faith and love repeat,

till death thy endless mercies seal,

and make the sacrifice complete.

Charles Wesley 1707-88 alt.

Psalm 104 vv 26 - 36

26. There go the ships,

and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.

27. These all look to you

to give them their food in due season;

28. when you give to them, they gather it up;

when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

29. When you hide your face, they are dismayed;

when you take away their breath, they die

and return to their dust.

30. When you send forth your spirit,* they are created;

and you renew the face of the ground.

31. May the glory of the LORD endure for ever;

may the LORD rejoice in his works—

32. who looks on the earth and it trembles,

who touches the mountains and they smoke.

33. I will sing to the LORD as long as I live;

I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

34. May my meditation be pleasing to him,

for I rejoice in the LORD.

35. Let sinners be consumed from the earth,

and let the wicked be no more.

Bless the LORD, O my soul.

Praise the LORD!
