¡Hola! Well, that’s the Patrona done and dusted for another year. I hope you all had a good time. This week’s front page is obviously our account of the week we’ve just had. There are plenty more and videos on the Patrona 2016 page on our website, please do take a look.

This week we take a good look at Can Picafort and all it has to offer. With the Fiesta de la Mar de Deu d’Agost revving up, anyone missing the fiesta feeling has somewhere to go. This is Mallorca afterall, there’s always a fiesta to look out for!

Enjoy!

Shooting Star Look Out

The middle of August is the annual shooting star storm show but this year it is set to be five times stronger. The meteor shower, called Perseids, is a phenomenon that occurs between late July and August when the Earth crosses the path around the Sun in the wake of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The comet causes meteoroids that collide against the atmosphere.

The Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC), based in Granada, reported that the usual level of activity of the Perseids is up to 100 meteors per hour, this year, predictions indicate that the phenomenon is particularly intense, up to 500 meteors per hour. This activity will peak and be most visible at night from 11-12 August, at 2am.

“The Swift-Tuttle comet orbits the Sun approximately every 133 years and every time it approaches it heats up and emits jets of gas and small solid particles that form the comet’s tail,” says Alejandro Sánchez, of the IAA-CSIC. Most meteoroids from the Swift-Tuttle are as small as a grain of sand, and when they come across our planet, they strike the atmosphere at a speed of more than 210,000 kmph.

Formentor LighthouseThe Formentor lighthouse (owned by the Balearic Islands Port Authority) began operating in 1863 after the arduous task of its construction in its isolated location. Currently it maintains its function as an aid to navigation through a solarized and tele-controlled signal.

In 2006 the Port Authority authorized the tourist operation of facilities and Hospitality Collaborator One S.L. has since then run a restaurant that uses the old lighthouse keeper’s house. The tourist exploitation model has proved particularly fruitful since its inception and now the government is keen to promote a project for other lighthouses of Spain with the aim of converting other Spanish lighthouses into tourist facilities through private concessions, following the pioneering model of Formentor.

After ten years since the restaurant at Formentor Lighthouse began its journey, the dealership has now asked the Port Authority of Balears for an extension of its administrative authorization. It has offered to invest in a remodelling to the tune of €270,128.44.

The project will involve the whole area of the lighthouse and its surroundings, fences, parking and road access. Inside the lighthouse will be painted and cleaned, the bathrooms will be renovated and the terrace will be completely restored. The work is expected to take two months.

Work on the New Landfill in Pollensa ProgressingThe new venue for the rubbish collection in Pollensa continues at good pace as the councillors visited the site with Emser. The landfill is being built in an industrial park and eventually replace the current facility located at Cami de Can Cullerassa. This new site is an essential piece of the new waste plan that was recently approved

in response to the increasing level of recycling in the town. The construction of the site is being carried out by UTE at a cost of €310,000.

Emser is in charge of running the loading dock. It is expected that the works will be in service in October.

Frontline Phase 2After the works of the on the front line at Puerto Pollensa were carried out over winter, discussions have been put forward for the second phase of improvements which would cost a total of €2.1m.

The work would include an important part of the frontline that would see an authentic pedestrianization of this section. The bike lane would also be level, separating it from the traffic to the paved areas.

Other items provided for the project are the creation of more areas of vegetation, the rehabilitation of the wall along the beach, the placement of new furniture and the refurbishment of the square, at the beginning of the walk.

In the specifications, the plans will determine and guarantee the solvency of the construction company in order to avoid situations like that created last winter, what’s more the timescale of the works would be specified between the months of November and Easter.

The project was presented by the council but the very next day, news appeared that the opposition was blocking it as there was no approval from the Costas or Consell Highways. In the Mayor’s defence, exactly the same happened last year for the

first phase, in the previous administration, and the work went ahead. This time round, the current government team will be able to see the whole project through so there should be some coherence. But this block from opposition will just delay the schedule.

Bus Service Improvements

Councillor Miquel Angel Sureda Massanet, of Pollensa, participated in the presentation last week of a new and improved bus route that will service the area. The improvements were made to the commuter bus brought by CTM – the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca that operates in the north of the island.

The changes were made in response to requests made by authorities and the hotel associations that need more services for employees of the hotels and tourist services.

Villa CortinaThe Mayor of Pollensa sent the police to keep note what happens in Villa Cortina as there were signs that work was about to start that would legalize the property. No permits have been issued, however, and any work would be illegal. On the 4th June, the judge ordered the council to issue permits because the visual impact would be ‘sufficiently mitigated’, with a new sloping roof. The delay in issuing the permit is under dispute, the technical services are studying the proposed legalization, while property owners see ‘bad faith’ in the delay.

Local News

Last week, during Alcudia’s Sant Jaume Festivities, a commemorative plaque was placed in the Park of Ca na Ferrera which is now called ‘Plaza Pere Adrover Baixeras’. Adrover was a teacher, an ex-mayor of the town and Justice of the Peace of Alcudia.

A parade led by the Municipal Band of Alcudia, directed by Jaume Garcia, left from the Plaza Pere Adrover Baixeras. This was shortly followed by the festive celebration in the Sant Jaume Church.

A ceremony was then held that proclaimed Pere Adrover Baixeras as a “favourite son of the city of Alcudia”, with the city’s anthem played by the Municipal Band and Choir. At the ceremony were members of the council, headed by the Mayor of Alcudia Antoni Mir

and Pere Adrover Baixeras’ family, his widow Maria Cànaves accompanied by her children and grandchildren. Also invited were mayors from other parts of north of Mallorca, as well as other associations in the municipality. The event made up part of the festivities for Sant Jaume and St. Triennial of Christ.

Every three years Alcudia’s Triennial celebration of the Holy Christ is held with great devotion and participation from residents and religious visitors, as well as tourists, totalling more than 4,000 people. They gather every three years to commemorate the miracle of the Holy Christ, which allegedly sweated blood and water in February 1507. This year, it was presided over by Bishop Xavier Salinas de Mallorca who was accompanied by the President of the Balearic Government together with

the Mayor of Alcudia who represented the City of Alcudia, along with fellow and opposition councillors.

The traditional religious event is one of the most important moments of the calendar for Alcudiens, it is considered a key feature of the town’s part of history and tradition.

During the religious ceremony, accompanied by the City Choir of Alcudia, the members of the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ, carried the image of the Holy Christ

in a procession around the streets of the old town before heading back to the church for the veneration of the Holy Image, and to sing the ‘Te Deum’.

The ban on bullfights is so close yet the technicality—a problem with the wording of the new law—has kept it so far from reality. So far that, last week, the annual bullfight in Alcudia for the Sant Jaume festivities went ahead regardless. A protest was held outside the bullring on the day and photos clearly show how children were admitted. This is already illegal and fines were handed out last year. Clearly they have not worked as a deterrent. One local animal rights protestor

told TOTN that “because there is this threat that it might eventually get banned and that the subventions from the EU might end them, they are organizing more bullfights than in recent years; there will be one in Palma this Thursday, in Alcúdia there’s another one planned for the 14th August, one in Inca on the 31st July and again in Palma on the 4th August…”.

Last week Pollensa Mayor, Miquel Angel March opened the Festival of Pollensa alongside artistic director and Mallorcan composer Joan Valent. The programme for this month is filled with various classical events. for full details, see the What’s On pages.

MOAI, Can PicafortMOAI Beach Club is part of the new wave of Chiringuitos that have cropped up along the north coast of Mallorca. Feeling the sand between your toes while sipping on a mojito is an irresistible way to spend an afternoon and MOAI can accommodate with style.

From its terrace, you can enjoy the cool ambience of the bar’s inimitable beach vibe while chilling out on the comfy sofas. With a chiringuito like this, it is possible to sunbathe

while you enjoy a good cocktail, eat a la carte and take in the tunes of resident DJs. It’s an ideal meeting place for young people looking for something different.

While there, make sure you try their burgers or delicious salads. And do not leave without trying their exotic flavoured Mojitos (the kiwi

especially!) or their special cava sangria.

The Sporto f t h e N o r t h

While first impressions of Can Picafort are of a bustling seaside tourist town, it hides a rich cultural history as well as being the gateway to one of the most beautiful, wild and untouched natural areas of Mallorca. You can visit the archaeological site of the Phoenician graveyard at the finca Son Real and the 2,500-hectare Albufera Bird and Nature Reserve, a wetland and breeding area to thousands of migrating birds.

Originally a small fishing port, Can Picafort began as a tourist destination 100 years ago when residents from nearby Santa Margalida started to build holiday homes to come and enjoy the long sandy beaches. The unusual name comes from Can, Mallorcan for ‘house of’, and Picafort which means ‘stings hard’. Picafort was the nickname of Jeroni Fuster, the owner of one of the first summer houses. One can only guess at his character! It was

when the summer homes were built that tourism was first considered an efficient way of diversifying the local economy from agriculture.

The original tourist area was developed in what is now known as Son Baulo, while the present centre of Can Picafort became established in the 1960s. Today there is still a small working fishing harbour, where you can go and watch the fisherman land their catch each weekday morning, but where once there were miles of sand dunes, now there are hotels and restaurants.

Geographically there is a significant change in the landscape – this part is not protected by the mountains of the north, instead the land becomes more open and windswept with lower rolling hills, perfect for hiking and cycling, and the stronger sea breezes bring waves to the beaches. Windsurfing,

kiteboarding and traditional surfing are all popular along this stretch of the bay.

Can Picafort provides a good base for a history tour thanks to the many Mediaeval churches and freely accessible archaeological sites. If you walk the 6km stretch of wild beach between Son Baulo and Son Serra de Marina, you will pass the Son Real Necropolis (cemetery of the Phoenicians) dating right back to the Talaiotic Period and the Son Real finca, a working farmhouse and museum with lots of information about the local plants and wildlife that you will see along the way. As you approach Son Serra there are obelisk towers placed at regular intervals along the beach, said to have been used as navigational aids during the 19th century, but appearing more like solemn watchtowers and a hint of the constant threat of invasion from the sea.

Amazingly access to all these ancient monuments is free and unregulated, you can literally touch history. The Ajuntamiento of Santa Margalida has recently

recognized the value of these historical sites and has pledged to make more information available, as well as staging art and sculpture exhibitions by local artists along the promenade and presenting a new Saladina Art Fest during October.

Can Picafort does have one of the island’s most celebrated Fiestas, the Mare de Deu d’Agost known locally as the Festival of the Ducks. This takes place each year on August 15 and attracts over 3,000 visitors to the town. Boats go out to sea, throwing rubber ducks into the water (in years gone by live ducks) and swimmers retrieve them for prizes. The origins of the fiesta are unknown but it started around 80 years ago and many of the town’s residents can remember taking part when they were children. July’s Fiesta of Santa Margalida can be traced back as far as 1405. This is a five-day celebration of games, sport and other activities.

Lots of mediaeval churches and Muslim architecture bear witness to the many rulers and invaders from past era, all of which contributed to the tapestry of culture and cuisine that make up Mallorca of today.

Sunseeker Owners Cruise

Olympic News

On Day Three, the flotilla set off for Puerto Pollensa, for the highlight of the cruise. Guests anchored at La Fortaleza, and their afternoon began with Marc Fosh hampers being served onboard. After lunch, water activities and demonstrations kept the guests entertained until sunset, when everyone was ushered ashore and up to the old fortress.

Greeted with cocktails and canapés, the guests mingled, entertained by stilt walkers and acrobats, all while taking in the best views on the

island. Once the 200 guests were seated, the Marc Fosh team served a gastronomic gala dinner and the event continued on the lawns and around the infinity pool with a DJ dance party that kept everyone dancing until the small hours.

According to Sunseeker Mallorca, the guests were thrilled about La Fortaleza and the ‘Ultimate 2016’ party, “which will stay in their hearts and minds for a lifetime.”

Local Canoeist, Sete Benavides, came fourth in London 2012 and is a real contender for a medal this time round. He talked to TOTN two weeks ago:How are you feeling about the Games?

This is my second Olympics, so I know what to expect. I will arrive six days in advance and stay in an apartment near the venue. After the competition, I’ll be able to relax and stay in the Olympic Village for a few days. So, no Opening Ceremony?

No, I’m going to party at the Closing Ceremony! You race in the 200m, it’s so tight, it’s hard to be sure of win.

Yes, it all depends on a good start and not missing a stroke during those 200m. You have to get everything perfect. How did you start canoeing?

With my little brothers at the sailing club in Puerto Pollensa. When I started it was just a small club, with a few of us. It got more professional every year and we reached national level. Now I train at the wakeboard lake in Puerto Alcudia, the

conditions are perfect. What about the venue in Rio?

I went to the test event in September last year. It was great, but for me, this is just another competition. I know my competitors, I even train with them. I see them all the time at World Cups and World Championships. It’s just like that but on a bigger scale.

Good luck to Sete! Canoe Sprint starts on August 15th.

Meanwhile in other Olympic news, local hero, Rafal Nadal has confirmed he will be competing in Rio in both singles and doubles. It will be his first competition since injuring his wrist last year. He has admitted he may not be in peak performance, but his rest from this year’s grand slams should have helped. As Nadal leaves, his pal and rival Andy Murray arrived to train in Mallorca, preferring to train here than compete in Toronto, his recent win in Wimbledon has seemingly put him in good spirits. His Instagram account has been busier than normal!

Tennis starts this weekend.

Sunseeker Owners CruiseLast weekend saw our friends at Sunseeker Mallorca host the Sunseeker Owner’s Cruise. The three-day event took in a tour of the island culminating in the ‘Ultimate 2016’ party at La Fortaleza here in the north. 200 fortunate guests and 24 Sunseeker boats, ranging from the Portofino 48 up to the Sunseeker 34-Metre Yacht (adding up to an impressive

1600ft of Sunseeker boats!), participated.

On Day One, the 24-strong flotilla gathered at Port Adriano, where Sunseeker Mallorca is based, for cocktails and canapés. Goody bags and itineraries in hand, the group took to their boats. The next morning, Day Two, the first stop was Es Trenc, where they went ashore for lunch in the sun. The afternoon was spent

cruising along the East coast to Porto Petro, where cocktails were served onboard. For dinner, guests were entertained at the Puravida Resort Blau before a barbecue was served on the lawn.
