Great things are happening at Good Samaritan Hospital. We saw the opening of the new lobby featuring our donor wall with a beautiful timeline of the hospital’s founding and rich history of caring to all in our community.

The first group of physicians moved into the

Medical Pavilion, and the hospital continues

to move forward with further renovations

to bring you and your family the best in

quality patient health care. Good Samaritan

Hospital could not do what it does without the

generous support of our benefactors and our

caring community.

In this issue of Good News, we highlight the

students at Immaculate Heart High School

and Middle School for their commitment in

giving back to their community through their

fundraising efforts to support women cancer

survivors and Helen’s Room. We are grateful

to the Rest Cottage Association of The Ebell

of Los Angeles for their generosity in helping

Good Sam provide services and programs for

driven to provide our patients with world-class,

innovative, compassionate and effective health

care today, tomorrow and for years to come.

We thank all of our partners in philanthropy

for helping us make great things happen

for our patients and their families at Good

mmaculate Heart High School

and Middle School is an independent,

Catholic, college preparatory school

for girls in grades 6 through 12, located on

a beautiful hillside property in Los Feliz. Since

its founding in 1906, they have been educating

the hearts and minds of over 10,000 young

women from all socio-economic, ethnic and

religious backgrounds. The school boasts many

achievements from academics to athletics, but what

makes their students unique is their commitment to

giving back to their community.

A community service event that has grown

in recent years is the school’s ongoing

support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

in October. Every year, Maureen Rodriguez,

Athletic Director and moderator for the Girls’

Athletic Association, encourages the athletic

teams to get involved during the month-long

activities. Last October, students from both

middle and high schools came together to

raise money and bring awareness to breast

cancer, something which has hit close to

home within their close-knit Immaculate

Heart community.

Carol Cobbs, Immaculate Heart Assistant

Registrar and Moderator of the Black

Student Association, and Amy Fujimoto, an

English teacher at the middle school, are

both breast cancer survivors. About three

years ago, Carol and Maureen researched

local nonprofits and found Helen’s Room at

Good Samaritan Hospital. Rosemary Boston,

Manager of the Cancer Data Center, oversees

Helen’s Room which provides free wigs,

hats, scarves, mastectomy bras, and services

such as support groups to low-income and

under-insured women with cancer. Once

the students learned of Helen’s Room, they

were very interested in supporting the cause

especially since many of them knew someone

who had been touched by cancer. They read

the beautiful story behind Helen and her

friendship with Monica Kahn (the founder

of Helen’s Room) and were moved by how

Helen’s Room came about. See pages 6-7 for

more on Helen’s Room.

Campus student leaders Sloane Swallow,

Alexandra Nichols, Maile Domantay, Justine

Katz and Korina Hernandez were involved

in spearheading the fundraising efforts for

Helen’s Room. The entire student body

decorated the school with pink garlands

to promote breast cancer awareness and

research. Pandas with Purpose, the middle

school outreach service group, sold baked

goods during lunch and after school. The

Girls’ Athletic Association sponsored a

“Jeans & Pink Day” featuring a barbeque

and concession stand before the high

school’s special “Breast Cancer Awareness”

volleyball matches. Immaculate Heart’s fall

sports teams wore pink during matches

and games in October. The enthusiasm the

students have shown in supporting Helen’s

Room has grown since they made their first

gift of $1,200 back in 2014. “Thanks to

the students’ joint efforts, $2,300 was

raised in 2016 – almost double the amount

donated in the first year to Helen’s Room,”

recalls Maureen.

COVER STORY Immaculate Heart School

Helen’s Room

What made this experience extra special

for the students was the opportunity to visit

Helen’s Room. Rosemary and her staff gave

Alexandra, Korina, Justine and Sloane a

tour of the department. “We went to the

room where the ladies try on wigs. There

was a room for their kids to play too. It was

different. When you hear of women with

cancer you don’t realize all that they go

through. The tour showed us how much

Helen’s room was doing for them (the ladies)

in providing scarves and blankets and that

made me happy knowing that I can make a

difference in their lives,” says Korina. Some

of the girls’ mothers or other family members

had been diagnosed with breast cancer like

Alexandra, whose mom is a survivor; “raising

awareness for breast cancer and Helen’s

Room really makes you reevaluate your

values and priorities. It changes you.”

Good Samaritan Hospital is extremely grateful

to the entire Immaculate Heart family for

their generosity to Helen’s Room. Immaculate

Heart Schools’ dedication to Helen’s Room

helps to ensure Good Sam continues

to provide the resources and services

available to cancer survivors. The students

at Immaculate Heart are truly the “Giving

Hearts” of our community and we

are thankful for all they do for Good Sam!

“One of the most important things I’ve

learned is that the greatest gift you can give

anybody is to listen,” words Monica Kahn

lives by as an advocate for women cancer

survivors struggling with the physical and

emotional effects of such a deadly disease.

Monica’s passion for this cause goes back

to her childhood friend Helen Rindfleisch,

who was diagnosed with lung cancer

and passed away in 1992. Monica saw

how Helen struggled daily living with a

terrible disease, and the enormous impact

it had on her self-image. “Helen was very

beautiful and it was extremely important

to her that she be able to get up every

day and put on her makeup and look

good,” explains Monica. “It was during

that journey that I realized that I felt very

comfortable working with people that were

going through cancer. I wanted to open a

positive appearance center for low-income

and under-insured patients.”

“When women come to Helen’s Room they

don’t just receive free wigs and products, they

gain back a bit of their self-esteem, confidence

and a sense of looking and feeling normal, and

that’s what makes Helen’s Room so special.”

— Monica Kahn

In 1998, Monica founded Helen’s Room,

a place of acceptance where there are

no stares and patients don’t have to hide

their hair loss or their feelings of fear and

vulnerability. Trained counselors work

with each woman on a one-on-one basis,

providing ongoing comfort, resources and

support. “When women come to Helen’s

Room they don’t just receive free wigs and

products, they gain back a bit of their self-

esteem, confidence and a sense of looking

and feeling normal, and that’s what makes

Helen’s Room so special,” says Monica.

Helen’s Room is run by an all-volunteer staff

and made possible by generous donations

from individuals and organizations alike

such as Immaculate Heart High School

and Middle School and the Rest Cottage

Association of The Ebell of Los Angeles.

ounded in 1894, the Ebell of Los Angeles

(Ebell) is a civic-minded women’s organization

located in the mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles.

The Ebell’s mission is to provide social, recreational

and educational opportunities for women. During the early

part of the 20th Century, many middle and low-income women

were in need of respite or convalescent care. In 1918, the

Ebell members formed the Rest Cottage Association (RCA), and

focused their philanthropic efforts by providing small convalescent

homes as “a place of rest for women.” By 1980, the Ebell sold

its last convalescent residence, and used the money to create

the Rest Cottage Association Endowment. Today, the members

of the Rest Cottage Association continue to support a variety of

causes benefitting women such as transitional housing, domestic

violence shelters, reentry housing, and maternity homes, just to

name a few.

A relationship that began in 1995, the Rest

Cottage Association has been supporting

women’s programs and services at Good Sam

for close to 22 years. RCA recently directed

significant funding to support the hospital’s

Mother and Baby Care Campaign to provide

the most advanced perinatal care to both

mom and baby at The Davajan-Cabal Center

for Perinatal Medicine. “When Brian Thorne

(Good Samaritan Hospital’s Vice President of

Fund Development) told us about the Mother

and Baby Care Campaign and explained the

importance of it, we said great. Our mission is

to be of service to women,” says Randi Jones,

RCA Vice Chair.

“The amazing thing about Good Samaritan is

that they have been in the community for over

a century and generations after generations

have been raising money to support the

hospital. We (Rest Cottage Association

Committee) just happened to be the ones

that are sitting in the chairs guiding the RCA

Endowment today. We stand on the shoulders

of women who came before us who had the

foresight to create the Rest Cottage Association

and the endowment,” adds RCA Chair, Patricia

(Patty) Lombard.

In addition to their commitment to the

Mother and Baby Care Campaign, the RCA

is also extremely dedicated to Helen’s Room

at Good Samaritan Hospital. The RCA also

directed funding to Helen’s Room, setting

up an endowment to provide future services

for cancer patients, and also donated 130

hand-knit blankets for women undergoing

chemotherapy. Cynthia Comsky, RCA Co-Chair

of Social Services explains. “Several years

back, I went on a tour of Helen’s Room and I

saw the blankets that were given to the women

to use during chemotherapy. I thought there

might be a better way to wrap these women

with love….So we started knitting blankets

and donating them to Helen’s Room. So far

we have handmade 130 blankets – each is

different, colorful and special.”

The Rest Cottage Association of The Ebell

continues to be a champion for women today

now more than ever. Good Samaritan Hospital

is grateful to organizations like the Rest Cottage

Association for their meaningful gift that will

impact the lives of so many women, expectant

mothers and their babies. We appreciate the

RCA’s kindness and friendship throughout the

years, and we thank them for their long-lasting

service to our community.

Innovative Research

r. Andrew Deutsch is the founder of Renaissance Imaging

Medical Associates (RIMA), the largest radiology medical

group in California and one of the top 20 in the nation.

Dr. Deutsch and his team are on the forefront of the

revolutionary changes that are taking place in radiology, and

they are a very special part of the Good Samaritan Hospital

community. “It is such a privilege to be a part of this hospital.

We started providing radiology services here several years ago and

it has been an honor. It is something we really value. I think we have

been doing a really good job and we are going to get better and better,” says Dr. Deutsch.

Dr. Deutsch has been a leader in the dramatic transformation in the field of radiology. A

prolific researcher, he is the author of more than 50 scientific papers and four textbooks

on radiology, MRIs and the musculoskeletal system. He has also been a pioneer in

changing the way that radiological services are delivered. The specialization of radiology

services is an important advancement in health care and reduces diagnostic errors,

delays in treatment and unnecessary treatment.

Due to Good Sam’s partnership with

Dr. Deutsch and his group of radiologists,

the hospital has been providing specialized

radiology services years before many other

hospitals. Dr. Deutsch and his colleagues

bring the highest level of radiology services

to all our patients. On any given day a team

of 20-25 radiologists are reviewing and

consulting on patients’ images around the

clock. “It is an important part of better patient

care,” shares Dr. Deutsch.

Focusing on patient care doesn’t stop in the

Radiology Department for Dr. Deutsch. Since

2014, Dr. Deutsch has been a very generous

supporter of Good Sam by giving to the

community he serves through our physician

donor group, Partners in Health. Physicians

who give an annual contribution of $1,000

or more to the hospital become members of

this donor group. “I feel a sense of gratification

in giving back. I am a big admirer of Mr.

Munger (Charles T. Munger, Good Samaritan

Hospital’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees)

and he said something like, ‘I’m not going to

need the money where I am going anyway!’”

he explains. “I feel like that. I’ve been very

fortunate and I want to do something to

give back.”

Since its inception, Good Sam physicians

through Partners in Health have raised close

to $4M to support medical programs, services

and highly specialized medical technology

for the hospital. Recently, Dr. Deutsch was

presented with the Chairman’s Award, given to

employees and physicians whose cumulative

giving is $30,000 or more, at the 2017

Good Company Campaign Awards Luncheon.

“There are a tremendous number of people

who work at this hospital that give – that is

extraordinary. Giving back is a way of life for

the Good Samaritan Hospital family. That says

something very special about the Hospital,”

said Dr. Deutsch. “That is a very significant

statement. Many of those people have not

been as fortunate financially, but they still give

to the Hospital. That is what makes Good Sam

– Good Sam. It is a very special place.”

Good Samaritan Hospital’s 13th Golf Classic was held on April 24, 2017 at the beautiful Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to all of our generous sponsors who partnered with us to make the Classic a tremendous success. This year’s golf event has been the best by far!

Once again, the proceeds of the event will support mother and baby care through the Davajan-Cabal Center for Perinatal Medicine. The renovations and upgrades to the NICU, Postpartum, and Labor & Delivery units have begun in an effort to provide our new mothers and their families a special and memorable experience as they welcome their babies into the world.

MAJOR DONOR DINNER

On a beautiful fall evening, our Chairman, Charles T. Munger, and the Board of Trustees hosted our annual Major Donor Dinner at The California Club in downtown Los Angeles. Along with Mr. Munger, Andrew B. Leeka, President and CEO and Margaret Bates, M.D., Chief of Staff, greeted and acknowledged our major donors for the significant financial contributions they made to Good Sam last year.

In 2016, over 100 individuals, corporations and foundations alike made an annual gift of $5,000 or more to Good Sam to be considered a major donor of the hospital. Our major donors contributed over $7M to support the hospital, and helped make a difference in the lives of our patients. $5M was directed toward specific programs like our Mother and Baby Care Campaign and cancer services, and $2M was focused on unrestricted funds for the care of the underserved.

Good Samaritan Hospital appreciates all our major benefactors who share in the mission of caring for others. Without the generous support of our major donors, we could not continue to provide hope and healing to our patients and their families.

We are so very thankful to Mrs. Susan M. Blumenthal and Mrs. Maribeth A. Borthwick, Trustees of the hospital who give of their time and talents for coordinating a lovely evening.

Most recently, he was with Dignity Health Systems where he excelled in developing innovative and collaborative relationships with hospital and physician leaders, and in creating key strategic initiatives. Todd is a high performing leader with achievements across acute and post-acute care, outpatient services, and physician practices.

When Todd learned of Good Samaritan Hospital he was immediately interested in joining our Good Sam family. “The reputation of the hospital, our outstanding physicians, the quality of the staff, and state-of-the-art medical equipment make my job easy. The physicians at Good Sam are by far the best in the greater Los Angeles area.”

As Vice President of Business Development, Todd is responsible for leading the hospital’s marketing and communication efforts, physician recruitment and retention, community outreach, and development of new business opportunities. He will also oversee the daily operations of The Tom Bradley Center for Health Care housed in Angelus Plaza. Founded in 1980, Angelus Plaza is an affordable senior living community located in downtown Los Angeles. Since then, Good Samaritan doctors have been providing on-site health care services to its residents made possible through its partnership with The Tom Bradley Center for Health Care.

Working closely with our President and CEO Andrew B. Leeka, Chairman of the Board, Charles T. Munger along with the Board of Trustees, Todd will develop strategies to make their vision for the future of the Hospital a reality. “They set the vision and the tone for the Hospital and I try to crystallize those goals into executable actions that will bring momentum to the organization,” he explained.

Welcome Todd to our Good Samaritan family!

Another Year of Great Success!

The Good Company Employee Campaign

The members of Good Company are employee partners

who demonstrate a belief in our vital health care mission

and the future of Good Samaritan Hospital. Each year,

employees demonstrate their support by making a

charitable donation to the hospital.

2017 was no different as the Good Company Employee

Campaign proved to be another year of great success,

raising $146,034.64 from 226 employee donors. Some

of the programs that are employee favorites include the

Cancer program, the Child Care Center, the Heart and

Vascular Center, the Junior Scholarship program and the

general operation of our great institution. Many thanks

to the 226 employees who supported the 2017 Good

Company campaign!

It expresses your values and also effectively provides for the people and charitable causes important to you. If you’ve been putting it off, here are eight important reminders why you need a will.

Without a will, your state’s laws – not you – determine how, when and to whom your property is distributed.

You can reduce (or maybe even eliminate) future estate taxes.

You can name your executor (a person, bank or trust company you choose to personally represent you) to manage and settle your estate. You can designate beneficiaries for items such as heirlooms, art, jewelry or real estate.

You may create trusts to provide for your spouse, children and others.

Through a “pour-over” will, you can transfer leftover assets to your living trust. You can support Good Samaritan Hospital through a gift in your will, which is simple, flexible and revocable at any time.

You can designate the guardian for dependents under

your care.

We can help provide gift planning information to you and your professional advisors at no cost or obligation. Simply contact Brian Thorne, Vice President, Fund Development at (213) 482-2774 or [email protected]. Please let us know if you would like to receive our “Wills Planning Guide.”

Important ReminderIf you already have a will, make sure it’s up-to-date. Life changes such as grown kids, births, deaths or marriages, increased estate value, or a move to another state should be a trigger to meet with your estate planning attorney to review your will.

Protect Your LegacyRegardless of your life circumstances or

estate size, your will is perhaps the most

important document you will create.

Step by Step: How to Create Your Will

• List all of your major assets.

• Decide which individuals or organizations

you want to receive specific possessions

or a share of your assets.

• Contact an attorney who specializes in

estate planning.

• Determine who will be your executor.

• Have your attorney draft your will.

• Sign and date it before witnesses. (In some

states, it must be notarized to be valid.)

• Keep it in a safe place and make sure others

know where it is and have access to it.

A Loving Start for Every Baby... Loving Care for Every Family!

At Good Samaritan Hospital, we believe that every baby is precious and deserving of the best. The Davajan-Cabal Center for Perinatal Medicine is dedicated to providing expectant mothers and their babies the most comprehensive and specialized health care services available.

“Jack is almost 3! He is a happy, adventurous little boy. He loves bubbles and to play ball. He is learning to count to 100 and enjoys playing at Good Sam’s Child Care Center,” says Anne Hutton of the outstanding care Jack received from Drs. Minoj Biniwale, Matt Lee, Smeeta Sardesai and the neonatal team at Good Sam.

Your ongoing support has enabled Good Sam to provide the best in critical care to our most fragile patients and expectant mothers. We hope you will join us today in our efforts to raise $3.5 million to our Mother and Baby Care Campaign to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and improve our perinatal facilities.

As a nonprofit hospital, we rely on community support to provide exceptional and compassionate care to all our patients and their families. Please consider a gift to Good Sam and help make a difference in the lives of our most fragile patients.
