14 College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Offerings: 389 AP tests were taken

  71% scored a “3” or higher on an AP Exam

  112 students participate in Dual Credit Course options where students

receive both high school and college credit.

20 students participated in the Cleveland Clinic’s eXpressions™ Program which is an interdisciplinary program that uses art, written communication, and math to engage high school students in the world. 20% of the projects receiving awards were achieved by Berea City School students.

  142 students were enrolled in 661 Post-Secondary Option courses.

  64 Berea-Midpark students inducted into the National Honor Society

  World languages offered - Spanish, French, German, and Chinese

  447 students participate in Project Lead the Way in Biomedical and

Engineering Program at Berea-Midpark High School (BMHS) and Middleburg Heights Junior High (MHJH).

  7 MHJH courses offered for high school credit in grades 7 and 8 – Algebra 1,

Geometry, Physical Science, Spanish, French, German, and Chinese.  

Flat Connection Project – Elementary to high school students participate in global projects to learn from and with each other. It is about connection, collaboration and co-construction. It includes technology infused challenge- based and project-based experiences across the globe through personalized approaches to learning for all.

  Berea City School District earned the Top AFS School award, for their

commitment to enhancing global education.  

Berea City School’s offers self-contained gifted classes through the ASPIRE Program for students in grades 2-4.

  40 students from Ford Intermediate and Middleburg Heights Junior High

participate in the Junior Model United Nations Conference sponsored by the Cleveland Council of World Affairs. Ten students received honors recognition and one student received the GAVEL Award which is the highest award one can obtain.

  Music - The Berea City School District provides a music program for all

children beginning in kindergarten through high school. The music program includes both general music and performance music. The performance music program includes a variety of offerings in band, orchestra and choir. Students may begin instrumental music lessons on string instruments in fifth grade. Electives at the high school include Orchestra, Concert Choirs, Show

  In its 14th year, the NAMM Foundation has once again recognized the Berea

City School District for its outstanding commitment to music education with a Best Communities for Music Education designation. The Berea City School District has been consistently ranked in the top in the nation for music education.

Visual Arts - The Berea City School District visual arts program begins in kindergarten and extends through high school. At the elementary, intermediate and junior high school levels, the students are encouraged to experience a range of art materials, tools, and techniques as well as subject matter, themes and ideas that can shape their art and inform their understanding of the world. High school courses offered include Painting/Drawing, Commercial Art, Ceramics, Photography, Art Exploration and Visual Effects and Design (TITANFX). We also provide independent studies for students who are unable to meet during scheduled class periods, in a variety of artistic disciplines, including fashion design.

 

Berea-Midpark High School is also home to TITANFX, the only high school program of its kind in the country. TITANFX introduces students to the skills, materials and techniques associated with the movie and entertainment industries.

2014 – Association of School Business Officials International’s (ASBO) Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR)

 

Received the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the CAFR from the Government Finance Officer Association (GFOA), for twenty-one consecutive years.

 

Grindstone Elementary School achieved a Gold Level Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council in the LEED Green Rating System and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.

 

2014 – Achieved the Award for Energy Stewardship for an energy conservation program.

 

In the past 16 months reduced energy consumption through an innovative energy conservation program by reducing the carbon footprint. The district saved 22,059 MMBTU, the equivalent of 2,623 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions being prevented, 471 cars removed from the road or 67,087 pine trees grown.

 

District certified by The Center for Human Nutrition at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation for the Eat Right at School Program 2014.

 

Awarded the HealthierUS Challenge: Smarter Lunchrooms - Bronze Award  

2013 Expenditure Per Pupil (EPP) - $12,956, the state average is $10,488 (Based on an ODE Simulation)

 

62.1% of EPP spent on instructional classroom expenditures (Based on an ODE Simulation)

 

84% total compensation has been held to the total district expenditures. (Based on an ODE Simulation)

 

The districts 2015 general fund budget projections will be over 1 million dollars less than the fiscal year 2009 budget and each fiscal year since due to fiscally responsible budget management due to the reductions in state tax reimbursements and property tax revenue.

 

Average family health care premiums have decreased by 10% from 2013 - 2014 as a result of decisions enacted by the district Health Care Committee.

The essence of our school district is the interwoven connections between our schools and our community. Berea City Schools recognizes the need for a total support system and values parent involvement, seeks community partners, and celebrates opportunities to showcase excellence.

  $39,615 grants were awarded to 21 educators by The Education Foundation.

The Foundation supports and enhances educational opportunities for students served by the Berea City School District. In 2013-2014 the grants awarded impacted 6,813 students.

  Partnerships with leading business companies and service organizations have

given our students real world experiences and the ability to apply concepts they have learning in the classroom. Our active partners include Baldwin Wallace University, Chamber of Commerce (Berea, Brook Park and Middleburg Heights), The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cuyahoga Community College, Cuyahoga County Libraries, Smart Consortium, Polaris Career Center, Southwest Health Center, Junior Achievement of Greater Cleveland.

  Events coordinated with community partners include Berea Arts Fest (BCSD),

visiting authors and local service organizations such as local chamber organizations, City Clubs, Kiwanis, Builder’s Club, Imagine Your Future, Think Cleveland partnership.

  Berea City School District Business Advisory Council (B.A.C.) – The B.A.C.’s

mission is to involve members of the business community in the education of our students. Serving the communities of Berea, Brook Park and Middleburg Heights, our members are concerned, committed, caring people who are dedicated to furthering involvement and fostering communication between the schools, parents, and the community at large through a variety of internships, student recognition, career shadowing and co-teach a topic through our well established relationship with Junior Achievement of Greater Cleveland programs.

  Junior Achievement of Greater Cleveland – Our volunteer-delivered,

kindergarten - 12th grade programs foster work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills, and use experiential learning to inspire students to dream big and reach their potential. With the help of more Cleveland area volunteers, JA students develop the skills they need to experience the realities and opportunities of work and entrepreneurship in the 21st-century global marketplace.

Parent-Teacher Associations - A strong Parent-Teacher Association at every school, and early childhood backed by volunteers, supports the learning experiences for all students. Each school has its own PTA, which belongs to and cooperates with the Berea City School District PTA Council.

  LINK is the parent advocacy group for gifted and talented services in the

Berea City School District. The group provides information and communication for parents, educators, students and other interested persons in support of gifted and talented learners. LINK is an affiliate of the OAGC (Ohio Association for Gifted Children).

  Berea P.E.A.K. is a parent support group started in 2014 by parents of children

in the special education programs in partnership with Berea City School District.

  The Community Resource Directory - Since 1995, the Berea City School District

has published the Community Resource Directory, which lists the various civic organizations and other nonprofits within the school district community, and some in the Greater Cleveland area, if there is not such an organization within the district. The Directory is available online, and provides background and contact information on approximately 120 organizations, as well as an extensive list of important phone numbers and the names and contacts of elected officials representing the communities of the district.

  Berea City School District Gold Card Club –Since the early 1960s, the Berea

City School District has encouraged its residents, 60 or older, to attend school events free of charge through the Gold Card. A publication, The Gold Card Review, is published online three times during the school year, providing dates, times, and locations of sports, concerts, plays and other events that are sponsored by the school district, so that senior residents may conveniently attend.

Berea City Schools is committed to ensuring the success of each student by providing a continuum of services personalized to meet each learner’s needs:

  Camp Mi-Bro-Be - The name Mi-Bro-Be comes from (Middleburg

Heights, Brook Park, Berea. Camp Mi-Bro-Be is a weeklong outdoor education program offered to all sixth graders. Each "team" of sixth grade students have the opportunity to camp in the beautiful woods of Camp Whitewood. The teachers accompany the students and join with high school student cabin counselors and the camp directors to provide a meaningful and memorable learning and team building experience. Graduating seniors consistently rate sixth grade camp as one of their school career highlights.

C.L.O.S.E. - Coe Lake Outdoor Science Education The program goals of CLOSE is to enhance the overall achievement in science subjects while fostering a deeper understanding of environmental concepts for local and global environmental stewardship by providing authentic hands on learning experiences, science literacy to include inquiry and communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation.

  Coe Lake Nature Trail & Riparian Restoration Project: The Coe Lake Project is

intended for use by students of the school district and community members as a land lab to facilitate an appreciation for the natural environment through the teaching of science and history. Our wildlife habitat has been nationally certified through the National Wildlife Federation as an official "Wildlife Habitat". Soon a sign will adorn the habitat. Our wildlife habitat # is 105284. It serves as a mini-refuge because of conscientious planning, landscaping, and sustainable gardening. Wildlife find quality habitat- food, water, cover and places to raise their young.

  Berea-Midpark High School and Middleburg Heights Junior High AVID

(Advancement Via Individual Determination) Certificated Program - these programs encourage students to realize their academic potential and place them on a college-bound path.

  Diversity Committee – Key stakeholders work to develop a culture that

embraces, seeks an understanding, respects, accepts, and celebrates our unique individual differences. The goal of BCSD Diversity Committee is to provide resources and opportunities that will increase awareness, understanding, and will celebrate diversity for our school community.

  Realizing Your Potential – The Berea High School's Realizing Your Potential

(RYP) program provides supplemental support and resources that enables and empowers underrepresented male students to identify and realize their potential in academia and social settings. RYP is a brotherhood of accountability and builds upon the hallmarks of unity, integrity, dedication, responsibility, and common purpose.

  Response to Intervention (RTI) – RTI is a comprehensive school-wide model for

identifying “at-risk” students through the use of universal screeners, and by providing preventative intervention to students by aligning assessment and instruction to inform school stakeholders about how to best meet the needs of students.

  Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS), also called Positive

Behavior Supports (PBS), is a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes in school communities while preventing problem behavior. The key attributes of PBIS include preventive activities, data-based decision making, and a problem solving orientation.

  Gifted Education - The needs of students who are gifted are met through a

continuum of services and strategies. Parents are viewed as partners who share in this responsibility. Many of the academic and social needs of students who are gifted are addressed. Practices such as cluster grouping,

differentiation, subject and whole grade acceleration, the ASPIRE program includes self-contained elementary gifted classes, coaching model, independent study, internships, mentorships and advanced course options may be used to meet identified students’ needs within and outside the school day.

  Special Education Services - Berea City Schools provides a continuum of

special education services preschool through high school. We envision an integrated learning environment between general and special education. All members of the learning community take responsibility for providing a personalized education plan to meet the individualized needs of students to ensure success.

  Additional services are provided through options to include online learning,

Ombudsman, Aristocrat Berea Pediatric Care Facility, and J. & G. Snow School.

  English Language Learner Program (ELL) - The purpose of the ELL Program is

to provide support to students as he or she attempts to understand and function in a new cultural or academic environment. This service is delivered during school hours. Our ELL tutors provide intensive instruction to support English language acquisition for ELL students. Students enrolled in the ELL Program come from a variety of cultural, linguistic, socio-economic and academic backgrounds. Berea City School District services students who come to us from all over the world.

 

ExtendED Program - Our Program has been designed to provide quality educational and recreational activities, and offers enrichment in areas such as language, arts and crafts, sports, music, homework assistance and much more. The program provides a safe, fun and often times educational experience before and after school.

 

Berea City School District Summer Camp is designed to meet the needs of working parents or others who have a desire for interesting, supervised activities for their children. Children who have completed kindergarten through 7th grade are eligible to enroll in the Summer Camp Program. Children will participate in a wide variety of experiences including: sports, outdoor games, arts, crafts, science activities and field trips; all built around a weekly theme.
