For the orchestras at UW, this year will be A Season of Joy. People seem

discouraged these days, with the state’s economy, budget cuts, the political

tensions, and so on. So I’ve chosen music that lets us escape all the Sturm und

Drang for a while. Not silly music: uplifting music.

Symphonies on tap are Beethoven’s 6, (the Pastoral Symphony), Mozart 31

(Paris), and Mendelssohn 5 (Reformation). Newer pieces by David Maslanka,

Arturo Márquez, Steve Reisteter, and Anne Guzzo will raise our spirits. Three

great old favorites are the Strauss Fledermaus Overture, Bernstein’s Candide

Overture, and Saint-Saën’s Bacchanale. There will be two choral works:

Bernstein’s uplifting Chichester Psalms and Brahms’ beautiful Nänie. Copland’s

charming opera The Tender Land, with a smaller orchestra in the pit, will be

a fully-staged production. The Chamber Orchestra will offer an evening of

virtuoso works, and join the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble for a night of Brazilian

bossa nova.

Wonderful soloists will grace our concerts as well. Blake McGee will do the

Copland Clarinet Concerto, the epitome of a joyful concerto. Theresa Bogard

and Chi-Chen Wu will have such fun with the Poulenc two-piano concerto, and

Sherry Sinift and James Przygocki’s contribution will be the Mozart Sinfonia

Concertante. And if two double concertos wasn’t enough, the Lysander Piano

Trio will bring Beethoven’s Triple Concerto to our stage.

When you’re ordering your tickets, please remember to join the Symphony

Association. If possible, up your contribution from last year. Those budget cuts

we’re trying to forget will impact the Music Department and the orchestra, so

we need your help. Thank you. And see you October 19!

-Michael Griffith

The Lysander Trio is brought to you by UW Presents, Janelle Fletcher, Director. We are so grateful for their cooperation and assistance. Guest soloists are always a wonderful addition to the orchestra’s season.

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION,Every year I am amazed at how Dr. Griffith comes up with a theme to unite the various components of the UW

Symphony season. This year the theme is Joy and the season includes some of my favorites such as the Beethoven

Pastoral Symphony and Mendelsohn’s Reformation Symphony interspersed with many lesser known contemporary

pieces. I look forward to another exciting season.

All good things come with a cost, however, and that is why I am encouraging you to join the Symphony Association

for the University of Wyoming. The primary purpose of the Symphony Association is to provide scholarships,

especially to first year students, and to help reimburse some of the student’s travel costs for conferences. This

year, we have been incredibly fortunate in the number of scholarship offers accepted and anticipate welcoming

high-caliber musicians from Wyoming and across the U.S., and foreign students as far flung as Brazil, Taiwan, and

Vietnam. This past year we helped defray the travel costs of thee of our talented musicians to attend workshops

and competitions both in the U.S. and Europe. The Symphony Association also provides for concert advertising and

in the past has contributed to instrument and equipment purchases, among other things.

All of this, of course, requires contributions from our members to sustain. Although a couple of our scholarships

are funded by special endowments, the vast majority are funded by the annual contributions of music lovers like

you. At a time when the University is actively trying to increase student recruitment to help ease our financial woes,

every scholarship we offer is one small contribution to encouraging increased student enrollment.

As a member of the Symphony Association, you will receive a newsletter previewing each concert with notes from

Dr. Griffith, an acknowledgment in the concert programs, and a possible tax deduction. More importantly, your

contribution will bring you the satisfaction of knowing you helped bring some of the musicians you hear on stage

to the University of Wyoming. Please join us today by adding a contribution to your season ticket subscription or

go to our website, www.uwyo.edu/sa, follow the “Give Online” link to the Foundation and scroll down to the UW

Symphony Association under “Gift Designation.”

We look forward to your membership in what promises to be a joyous academic year.
