THEME: THE FAITHFUL GOD DEUT. 7:9

God's choosing of Israel was motivated by His love for them (Deut, 7:7-8). Moreover, God promised to faithfully

keep His covenant and show mercy to generation after generation of “them that love him and keep his commandments” (cf 6:4-9). Not only was God's love contigent upon this response of love and obedience, but

also their prosperity (v13-14), good health, (v15), and military success (v 16).

God promises to keep His commitments to His people “for a thousand generations” (Deut 7:9). He reminds them that He didn't free them because they deserved it or because they were the largest nation on earth, but

because He loved them.

Many people are facing hardships. You may be one of them. In fact, may be life itself has been nothing but one, long grueling hardship for you for as long as you can remember. I pray that something in this writing, and

indeed, in the course of discussing the theme of the year, might bring some comfort for you. There is little else in life that hurts as deeply as feeling as though God is not faithful.

Let's address the very MOST important issue regarding God's faithfulness. The Hebrew word translated

“faithfulness” means “Steadfastness, firmness, fidelity.” The opposite of being faithful is to be ever. Changing or wishy-washy. Faithfulness is an attribute of God. He is the definition of faithfulness in a sense. It is the nature

of God to be faithful and He is. Faithfulness is therefore a characteristic of the body of Christ and one that all Christians should have and practice.

Why should Christians or anyone for that matter, obey God? Why should we trust God and do what He says?

The answer to these and similar questions is simply that God is faithful. Because God is faithful, we van trust Him and therefore obey Him. We are confident in the times of trouble because we known that God is faithful.

The promises of God are real and his faithfulness will never fail us. We have nothing to fear as believers

because the power of God is always with us. Yet those words may ring hollow when you are in a crisis situation. You may be dealing with a serious illness for which there is no cure. You may be struggling with

financial difficulties and don't know where to turn. You may be suffering the pain of a broken marriage or relationship and have lost all hope for the future. Whatever the struggle, it can be hard to stand in your faith

when your circumstance seems hopeless.

We read in proverbs 24:10, “if you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength;” The truth is that those who believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ have limitless power to defect anything that comes

against them. In IJohn 5:4, we are told that everyone born of God overcomes the world. The forces of evil cannot conquer a child of God. The devil himself knows that he is unable to harm a hair on your head, but only

what God permits. And God will only allow that struggle or pain for which He has prepared in advance to bring you through to victory. Each trial we endure is permitted to help us to develop the perseverance that we

need to stay strong in this life so that our faith may be proved genuine.

Christ did not suffer and die to lose the battle. His death paid the price for our victory and it connot be taken from us. It does not matter what trouble you may be expeciencing, God is willing and able to bring you

through it. He alone can turn a painful situation into something that will be used for good with a reward that will last forever.

Here then, is the crux of the whole matter; What God is looking for are people who will be faithful to HIM!

especially in the midst of their trials, like Job was. God may allow you to stay in the painful place you are in emotionally (and may be physically) until you determine within yourself to declare that God is faithful to me,

and that's the beginning and the ending of the matter!

GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;

there is no shadow of turning with thee;

thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;

as thou hast been thou forever will be.

Refrain:

Great is thy faithfulness!

Great is thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

all I have needed thy hand hath provided;

great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

2. Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,

sun, moon and stars in their courses above

join with all nature in manifold witness

to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth

thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

BIBLE STUDY

9.00 A.M. – 9.45 A.M

TRINITY EIGHT

6TH AUGUST, 2017

Theme: Prerequisites for healing the land Topic: Self-Effacing Humility Text: II Chron. 33:1-16 Aim: i) understand the true meaning of self-effacing humility; ii) realise the importance of self-effacing humility in divine pardon and healing of a land. Introduction “Self- effacing humility” is maintaining an attitude of total submission or respect to a higher authority without drawing attention to oneself. We see the emphasis on “Humble themselves” in II Chron.7:14. King Manasseh committed grievous sins in Israel; so God allowed him to be captured and tortured by the Assyrian King (II Chron. 33:2-11). However, in distress, he humbled himself, called unto God, repented of his sinful habits and God delivered and restored him. A broken and a contrite heart, God will not despise (Psa. 51:17). We see a classical example in Phil 2:8 which shows us of Jesus’ humility and how it brought Him exaltation. Observe the two sides of humility expected of all believers. Study Guide 1. Explain self-effacing humility in the context of I Kings 21:27-29; II Chron. 33:12; Jonah 3:6-9; Phil 2:5-8. 2. i) Why do some Christians fail to humble themselves, Prov. 16:18; 18:12? ii) Contrast the attitude of Manasseh in II Chron.33:10

with that of some of our leaders today? See Prov. 16:19. iii) High positions may sometimes make us enemies to self-effacing humility. True? Why? 3. How does God value humility and treat the humble? II Chron. 12:5-7; Luke 18:10-14; Phil.2:5-11. 4. How can self-effacing humility help to heal our relationships interpersonally, congregationally and diocese wide? Conclusion We must be careful not to draw attention to how humble we are before the Lord in prayer if we expect to receive mercy and favour from Him. To sincerely adopt this lifestyle is a means of grace to help solve problems we may have. Following Jesus’ example is still the key to the exaltation, divine pardon and healing of the land of any people. Food For Thought God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble Memory Verse - II Chron. 12:7.

BEING TRANSFORMED INTO CHRIST’S NATURE

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.(2 Cor. 3:18) Let us initiate this meditation by assessing the differences between the “traveller” and a “tourist”. Traveller literally means “one who travails.” He labors, suffers, endures to get there, he immerses himself in a culture, learns the language and customs, lives with the locals, imitates the dress, eats what’s set before him. He takes risks, some enormous, and makes sacrifices, some extravagant. He has tight scrapes and narrow escapes. He is gone a long time. If ever he returns, he returns forever altered. Tourist literally means “one who goes in circles.” He’s just taking an exotic detour home. He’s only passing through, sampling wares, acquiring souvenir, he retreats each night to what’s safe and familiar. He picks up a word here, a phrase there, but the language, and the world it’s embedded in, remains opaque and cryptic, and vaguely menacing. He spectates and consumes. He returns to where he came from with an album of photos, a few mementos, and a cheap hat. He’s happy to be back and declares there is no place like home. A similar shift in the church today, we stopped calling Christians disciples and started calling them believers. A disciple is one who follows and imitates Jesus Christ. He loses his life in order to find it. He dives into the language and culture of Christ until His Word and His world reshape his, redefines him, change inside out how he sees and thinks and dreams and, finally, lives … A believer holds certain beliefs, but how deep down these go depends on the weather or his mood. He can get defensive, sometimes intensely so, about his beliefs, but in his honest moments he wonders why he made such little difference. You can’t be a disciple without being a believer. But here’s the rub, you can be a believer and not a disciple. You can say all the right things, think all the right things, believe all the right things, do all the right things, and still not follow and imitate Jesus Christ. The kingdom of God is made up of travelers, but our churches are largely populated with tourists. The kingdom is full of disciples, but our churches are filled with believers. We must value life transformation, not just life information; our learning must lead to Christ-like living. Romans 12:1-2, encouraged us not to copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform us into a new person by changing the way we think. Then we will learn to know God’s will for us, which is good and pleasing and perfect. The word “transformed or transformation” means to make a marked change into something different and implies a major reformation in form, nature or function.

Be transformed. This is in the active voice, meaning I am responsible to make it happen.

Are being transformed. This is in the passive voice, meaning that transformation is being done within me.

We are responsible to change on the one hand but without the Spirit changing us, we will never be transformed. Spiritual transformation is both intentional on our part and the result of the work of the Spirit.
