2. Credit Hours

2.1. Students must complete at least 12 GPA hours at Virginia Tech from the Engineering Index GPA list prior

to completing the change of major application.

2.2. Non-engineering students must complete the change of major application to General Engineering with

no more than 36 GPA hours at Virginia Tech (non-engineering students are not required to declare

General Engineering prior to declaring a degree-granting granting engineering major).

2.3. Students in GE or other non-engineering major must complete change of major application to a degree-

granting engineering major with no more than 55 GPA hours at Virginia Tech.

2.4. Students must be in a degree granting major for one semester prior to declaring a secondary engineering major.

3. Engineering Index GPA The Engineering Index GPA is calculated based on courses taken at Virginia Tech. If equivalents are transferred from another institution or through testing, the grades/scores earned will not contribute towards the Engineering Index GPA. The Engineering Index GPA includes courses listed in item 1, plus courses taken at Virginia Tech with the following prefixes (except those which appear on the College of Engineering’s Non-Degree list):

3.1. From the College of Engineering: AOE, BMES, BSE, CEE, CHE, CNST, CS, ECE, ENGE, ENGR, ESM, ISE, MSE, ME, MINE, NSEG

3.2. From the College of Science: BCHM, BIOL, BMVS, CHEM, CMDA, GEOS, ISC, MATH, NANO, PHYS, STAT 3.3. Not all courses apply to all engineering degrees; students are advised to consult degree checksheets and

academic advisors for best course choices in each degree program. 3.4. Many courses (e.g. CHEM 1035, CHEM 1045, MATH 1225 and ENGE 1215) may not be available to non-

engineering majors during the fall semester).

4. GPA Policies

Degree granting engineering majors accept applicants on a space-available basis

4.1. Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 overall GPA and a minimum 2.0 Engineering Index GPA at the time of

application.

4.2. Applicants with a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA and a minimum 3.0 Engineering Index GPA at the

time of application are guaranteed their first choice major.

4.3. Applicants below a 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA and/or below a 3.0 Engineering Index GPA at the time of

application will be rank ordered according to their Engineering Index GPA and placed in their first, second,

or third choice based on space availability.

5. Coursework Completion All required coursework must be completed (not currently enrolled) and displayed with a final grade on the Virginia Tech Unofficial transcript at the time of application.

5.1. Students using transfer credit to meet any of the course requirements must have the transfer credit posted on the Virginia Tech Unofficial transcript at the time of application.

5.2. There may be a delay of weeks/months from Registrar’s receipt of the official transcript from the transfer institution to having credit show on student’s transcript (viewed in Hokie Spa). Major changes will not be processed until all credits are officially awarded and showing on the Virginia Tech transcript, which may delay the student’s ability to submit a College of Engineering Change of Major Application.

6. Application Availability

The College of Engineering Major/Minor Application is available electronically prior to the beginning of fall,

spring, and summer at http://www.enge.vt.edu/Undergraduate/changing_majors.

Enrolling in ENGE 1215 To enroll in ENGE 1215 at Virginia Tech students must be math ready, meet the computer requirement, and purchase the engineering software bundle.

Fall Semesters: Available to General Engineering students only.

Spring Semesters and Summer I Sessions: Available to General Engineering students, regardless of GPA, and on a

space available basis to non-engineering students with a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA.

Summer II Sessions: Available to only Virginia Tech Summer Academy students admitted to the College of Engineering.

Enrolling in ENGE 1216 To enroll in ENGE 1216 students must have earned a minimum grade of “C-” in ENGE 1215 or ENGE 1024.

Fall, Spring, Summer I, Summer II Semesters: Available to General Engineering students, regardless of GPA, and on a space available basis to non-engineering students with a minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA.

Transferring Credit for ENGE Sequence (ENGE 1024, ENGE 1104, ENGE 1114, ENGE 1215, ENGE 1216) Transfer credit for the old ENGE course sequence (ENGE 1024, ENGE 1104, ENGE 1114) will be awarded for equivalent courses taken at another institution through summer II 2016. Transfer courses taken fall 2016 and after will need to be re-evaluated for ENGE 1215 and ENGE 1216 to receive applicable credit for engineering majors.

Students wishing to transfer credit for any of the course requirements can find equivalent courses using the below resources:

List of Transferrable “ENGE” Courses (from Virginia Community College Schools (VCCS))

Virginia Community College Guide (for VCCS schools)

Transfer Equivalency Database (for non-VCCS schools) Prior approval for transferring courses must be obtained from the College of Engineering Academic Affairs Office via the Transfer Credit Request Form. Non-engineering students should only use this form for ENGE prefix courses, all other approvals should be submitted through their current college.

Students using transfer credit to meet any of the course requirements must have the transfer credit posted on their Virginia Tech Unofficial Transcript at the time of application. NOTE: The University requires that a student earn a minimum grade of “C” for any course being transferred.
