threshold, and unless reached- any pesticide applications made are wasted money that the farmer could have saved. Four State specialists have agreed to teach information on these topics for corn, cotton, peanut, and soybean. Due to the limited number of scout schools available in the Marianna area in recent years, Farmers and Ranchers will also be able to attend this training. Surveys will be distributed to compile information regarding their current management strategies, and which pests they are most concerned about regarding their operations. Agents will receive a similar survey regarding the topics addressed, usefulness of information, and if they have interest in receiving more training in the area or similar areas that need addressed.

The objective is to increase the County Extension Faculty’s knowledge regarding pest identification, scouting and overall management in row crops. This will allow them to make better recommendations to their clientele when on field visits, phone calls, or disseminating information at their county events.

Farmers will improve their ability to scout and recognize economic thresholds, therefore reducing expenditures on unnecessary pesticide applications and preventing them from entering the environment.

landscaping practices and use of water-saving indoor appliances. The training will also cover the effects of price-based incentives/policies such as manufacturer or utility rebates on homeowners’ adoption of water-saving irrigation systems. The materials for this course are based on two large nationwide surveys that collected data on homeowners’ indoor water use and outdoor/lawn irrigation practices. Course content is applicable to Extension personnel or relevant stakeholders, who are interested in 1) learning about homeowners’ knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes towards indoor/outdoor water-conserving practices and eco-friendly lawn fertilizer application, 2) effectiveness of incentive policies such as rebates for smart landscape irrigation systems and/or water-saving (indoor) appliances, 3) strategies to work with homeowners to promote sustainable landscape practices. Overall, this course offers participants the opportunity to receive new and research-based information about current practices and effectiveness of strategies to improve water-saving practices in Florida.

2 31258 Measuring the Outcomes and Impacts of UF/IFAS Water Conservation Extension Programming: 2017 Update

The purpose of this in-service training is to update participants on the statewide UF/IFAS urban water conservation evaluation project, engage them in measuring water savings as a result of their programming, and provide opportunities to become more involved in the project going forward. As a part of the UF/IFAS Extension Initiative II "Enhancing And Protecting Water Quality, Quantity, And Supply", a team of Florida Extension agents and specialists have been collaborating to ensure UF/IFAS is documenting progress on this part of the roadmap. The evaluation strategy is based on University of Florida research on water-saving technologies (such as rain sensors) and practices (such as reduction of irrigation frequency) (such as Boyer and Dukes 2014).

Participants will:

Increase knowledge about the University of Florida research used to estimate water savings that results from specific landscape practices

Increase ability to locate evaluation resources

Increase understanding of the statewide progress made on the urban water

The purpose of this FCS Summit is to provide comprehensive in-service training opportunities for county Extension FCS faculty in all areas of Initiative V. Workplace and community wellness programs have the potential to positively impact participants’ health-related lifestyle behaviors, health status, and risk for acute and chronic diseases that contribute to poor health-related quality of life, absenteeism and reduced productivity at worksites, and high health care costs. Educational programs designed to promote positive family relationships, work-home balance, and recommended financial management strategies can contribute to participant wellness in the broadest sense, impacting both the employee and employer, when conducted at workplaces. Impacts may include improved morale, job satisfaction, and employee retention at worksites, and reduced family and financial stress.

County Extension faculty have opportunities to participate in wellness programs in their counties at worksites and through county government. In most cases, their primary role is to provide research-based educational presentations and in-depth programs that have

8 31257 Extension Behavior Change: Introduction to Social Marketing Principles for Extension

Overview:  Social marketing is a research-based approach to bringing about change, and while it holds a lot of value for UF/IFAS Extension, we have only minimally explored the potential of this approach to programming. Social marketing applies principles of traditional marketing to address complex issues and bring about change that benefits the extension client, their community, and/or the environment. For many, this is an important strategy to incorporate into existing educational activities, because many social marketing tools can increase our impact, and can be developed at no cost to the organization. This training will present social marketing as an approach to creating behavior change in Extension programming. The speakers will present participants with an overview of this approach, followed by a discussion of the role of this strategy within the Extension system. Tools from the "social marketing toolbox" will be discussed. Participants will play a role in planning for future trainings on this topic.

The goal is to increase awareness of an underused approach, encourage agents to incorporate the tools/principles of social marketing into their programs, and pursue some of our more in-depth trainings on social
