Developed for performance directionaldrillingSchlumberger’s objective when providingdirectional drilling services is to drill fromshoe to total depth in one run, every time,at maximum rate of penetration (ROP). ThePowerDrive X5* rotary steerable system(RSS) was developed with that objectivein mind.
This system represents a step change inreliability and efficiency, facilitating thedrilling of longer runs, optimizing wellboreplacement, and reducing drilling time. Thecost savings that result can be direct andsubstantial.
An automatic inclination hold and effi-cient downlink function minimize theinteraction with the directional drillerneeded to maintain directional controlwhile drilling ahead. Less time needed forsurface interaction means more time spentdrilling—up to 15% improvement in drillingperformance has resulted from increasingproductive time on bottom every drilling day.
All PowerDrive X5 external parts rotate. That rotation reduces drag, improves ROP,decreases the risk of differential or mechan-ical sticking, and achieves superior holecleaning and conditioning.
Working in combination with the system’sautomatic trajectory functionality, the fullrotation increases wellbore smoothnessand decreases tortuosity. This reducesdrilling torque, improves drilling efficiency, and eliminates the need for unplannedwiper trips. The smooth wellbore alsomakes it easier to run casing and simplifiesactivities later in the life of the well, suchas coiled tubing intervention and electricalsubmersible pump installation.
Engineered for reliabilityThe PowerDrive X5 system is engineered todeliver a step change in reliability. A robuststeering section and advanced coatingmaterials that mitigate wear ensure reliable, consistent performance in a wide range ofdrilling environments.
Good drilling performance because of simple, rugged steering section.
Directional measurements near bit, for precise TVD directional control.
Fully rotating PowerDrive X5 system.
Optimized flow profiles reduce therisk of sticking, limit the effects of mudsolids, and reduce erosion of internaland external downhole components. Thesystem’s electronics, which are chassismounted for reliability and durability, canoperate in downhole temperatures ashigh as 302°F [150°C].
Designed for accurate drilling and wellboreplacement The availability of near-bit measurementsin real time ensures accurate, efficientdrilling and wellbore placement. Theefficient downlink systems and automaticinclination hold provide a smooth tan-gent section and improve true verticaldepth accuracy in the horizontal section—critical for maximizing recoverablereserves and the well’s productionpotential.
An MWD-type triaxial sensor packageclose to the bit provides accurate azimuthand inclination directional information,
which allows fast, responsive directional control in either automatic or manualoperation mode.
Once a target formation has been pene-trated, the trajectory can be “locked in”using the inclination hold functionality. No further input is required from thedirectional driller.
Steering decisions are further aided byan optional real-time azimuthal gamma raymeasurement and imaging of the wellboreto provide information on formation dipor fault boundaries. An azimuthal gammaray sensor, 61⁄2 ft [2 m] from the bit, enables drillers and geologists to identifybed boundaries quickly, allowing fasterresponse to formation changes and wellplacement optimization. Casing and cor-ing point detection is optimal, penetrationof formations to be cored is minimized, and the chances of drilling through apotentially valuable core section or wast-ing time coring an uninteresting formationare significantly reduced.
Operates in downhole temperatures as high as 302°F [150°C]. Near-bit azimuthal gamma ray for wellbore placement and dip and fault determination.
