PCU Debugging Commands
1 INTRODUCTION
The intent of this paper is to document the information available at the moment inthe GPRS trials about debugging procedures in the PCU.
The document is divided in five parts:
Getting connected to the PCU
Basic procedure to access to the cards in the PCU.
Interprocess communication
Overview of the processes present in each PCU board.
Development commands
Description of the commands that can be used to obtain information in the PCU.
Debugging commands
List of all the commands available in the PCU to get information on a per process basis1.
Answers to most of the commands presented are shown inside borders and in
Courier New 8 letter . This makes the document quite long but it helps to seewhat can you expect from the filters without experimenting with them in the lab.Take into account that this commands are very powerful : you can get very usefulinformation, but if you are not experienced you can also block processes or evenreset the PCU.
Frequently asked questions
This is maybe the most important section for most of the readers as it presentssome examples of how to use the debugging commands to investigate some
particular problems. At the same time these are the filters most often used at themoment in most of the worldwide networks.
1 These are the commands we could get, but note that we don´t have access to the meanning of each bit of the
masks yet.

2 GETTING CONNECTED TO THE PCU
There are two ways to get connected to the PCU cards2:
1. Direct connection3.
2. Via BSC.
2.1 Direct connection
Connect your serial port to the card using a straight-through cable and start acommunication program (for example HyperTerminal).
Change level as the prompt appears.
2.2 Via BSC
2.2.1 From the OMC-R
• Open a TTY-Session
omcr - > tty_rlogin BSC_name
• Change to security level 3
chg_l
•
Switch to GPROC-emon mode
MMI-RAM 0015 - > set_mmi exec_mon
• Remote login to the PCU card ( to see the number of the card do a disp_proc pcuin the MMI )
GPROC:emon -> rl 254 11xxh
2 Remember that only one remote login can be established per processor.
3 It is recommended to connect directly to the PCU cards to avoid overloading of the GSL and OML.

• Change to security level 3
chg_l
2.2.2 Direct connection to the BSC
Start a Hyper-Session on the PC connected with a straight-cable to the master-GPROCin slot 20.
Then you will be in MMI mode (man-to-machine interface):
• Change to security level 3
chg_l
• Switch to GPROC-emon mode.
Ctrl-N (toggles between MMI and emon-mode)
• Remote login to the PCU card ( to see the number of the card do a disp_pr pcu inthe MMI )
GPROC:emon -> rl 254 11xxh
where xx is the number of the card
Example:
Connection to the mproc, 254 identifies the PCU, 11 identifies the cage and 07the slot ( PSP card ).GPROC:emon -> rl 254 1107h
• Change to security level 3
chg_l
To disconnect from the PCU processor the sequence is :
• Close the remote connection with the PCU processor:
PCU:emon -> Ctrl-D
• Switch to MMI mode
GPROC:emon ->set_mmi cust_mmi
Note1: If you want to disable your 30 minute security time out ( EMON ) use this msg

at PCU. There is a different message for disabling the security time out at the BSS.msg 23 1 0 0 8a04h 1
Note 2: You can change the baud rate4 (do it also in the port of the pc). Just type
-> baud new_speed
4 This will be necessary in filters that manage big amount of information, like some PRM filters. A recommended
speed is 38400.

3 INTERPROCESS COMMUNICATION
The PCU system is composed of several processes. These processes communicatethrough defined messages. As hardware configuration changes more processors boardsmay be added and functions distributed across the boards. See in the picture below anoverview about the processes and the boards involved in the PCU.

Since all the intercomunication processes are made through defined messages, that aresent to the correspondent mailboxes, could be very interesting to see which mailboxesare involve with each process. With the command zstats <ps id> you can display thecurrent status of any mailbox within the system.

4 DEVELOPMENT COMMANDS
4.1 Internal Report
The internal information report is a tool which can be used to selectively display usefulinformation on a terminal. The format and content of the IIR output is completely up tothe user. For each report we need to set up a IIR_mask, to display the information desire
by the user.
iir_dis <pid>This command displays the IIR mask for the specified process
iir_mod <pid> <value>This command will update and display the IIR_mask for the specified process
iir_mod <pid> 0hThis command will clear all the IIR_masks for the specified process
4.2 Message send
Interprocess communication is accomplished by the use of messages, which are packetsof data sent from one process to another. With this tool message send, the user cantrigger some events, sending specifics messages to a process.
4.3 Filters
This command allows the user to describe a set of messages characteristics. If themessages traffic matches the filter criteria, then the message is printed to the monitor.Below we can see some actions that are necessary to perform to monitor the filters.

5.1 Displaying data from the PCU database
The PCU has a local database that is a subset of the BSC database. However,
there is no MMI process running at the PCU. Therefore, the user can not log intothe MMI at the PCU to display data that is stored locally at the PCU database.
pCM allows the user to display database information for a CELL, SITE, PCU,DPROC, MSI, etc. This is done by injecting a message into pCM specifying theobject that is requested to be displayed.
msg 113 5 66 0 0abh 2 7 7 3 [object] [local cell id]
If no object is specified, a list of the possible objects is printed.

6.4 To see the GB link establishment
Have the following IIR turned on at the GB board to see the Gb link establishing.
PCU:emon_1102 % iir_mod 0d6h 0e4h
The correct procedure should start at status 1 and end with status 3.
Status 2:‘remote alarm´ was received, frame relay problems. No ack FR from SGSN.
Status 3: Good. PCU receives the ack from the SGSN.
Status 6: ‘remote alarm indication’ was received and CRC error(s) received, either of these means that there is a problem with the link. It’s worth checking the physicalconnections. It could also be influenced by the Radcom, so try to disconnect it from theGb-link.
Another option is to send these two commands to Gb card:

To display the current setting for ul and dl cs, send the following message at the PRP.
MSG_SEND 0D9H 9000H 0 0 7404 04 48
The prm will then print the value for ul and dl cs.
If 0 is displayed then the cs will be forced to CS1.
If 1 is displayed then the cs will be forced to CS2
If 255 is displayed then the cs will be algorithm selected.
For example:
PCU:emon_1105 % msg_send 0d9h 9000h 0 0 7404 04 48
Current dl_cs1_cs2_fake_flag is: 255
Current ul_cs1_cs2_fake_flag is: 255
To change the cs mode, send the following message on the PRP.
MSG_SEND 0D9H 9000H 0 0 7404 04 47 <DOWNLINK VALUE> <UPLINK VALUE>
Where <downlink value> and <uplink value> are:
0 = forced CS1,
1 = forced CS2,
255 = algorithm select
For example:
PCU:emon_1105 % msg_send 0d9h 9000h 0 0 7404 04 47 1 1
dl_cs1_cs2_fake_flag is set: 1
ul_cs1_cs2_fake_flag is set: 1

6.10 How to change the Coding schemes thresholds
Here are some messages that can be sent into PRM to alter the way the coding schemeselection algorithms work. Avoid touching in this values, just for testing proposes.
msg_s 0d9h 9000h 0 0 7404h 4 45 <cs1_cs2_threshold> <cs_hyst>
where <cs1_cs2_threshold> is the threshold in units of C/I (in dB) * 10 that you wish thecutoff point to be at and <cs_hyst> is how many dB either side of that value you wish thehysteresis to be so as not to thrash back and forth.
The next message will print the two values (use this first to get the defaults.)
msg_s 0d9h 9000h 0 0 7404h 4 46
To modify the BLER cutoff values:
msg_s 0d9h 9000h 0 0 7404h 4 35 26 <BLER*100> -- for CS/1msg_s 0d9h 9000h 0 0 7404h 4 35 25 <BLER*100> -- for CS/2msg_s 0d9h 9000h 0 0 7404h 4 35 91 -- Prints the values out

6.11 Data collection procedure for TS OOS
1) In each PICP board, inject the following message to find out the TS OOS.
msg 0dbh 9000h 0 0 0 44
The ouput of the message will look roughly like this:CN:0xXXXX Cell:XXXX CR: XXXX TS: XXXX PmcIdx:XXXXThe PDCH that is out sync will be in one of the outputs.If you have a big amount of TS OSS in the same GDS (Ex: PmcIdx:XXXX) could bethat this situation is due to a board failure or link problem.If any such line is printed, then this means that the PDCH is out of sync.
Note the 'CN' value of the PDCH that is out of sync.
PCU:emon_1102 % msg 0dbh 9000h 0 0 0 44
The following TRAU channels are out of sync:
CN:0x33 Cell:2 CR:0 TS:7 PmcIdx:0
CN:0x3a Cell:2 CR:0 TS:4 PmcIdx:0
CN:0x3b Cell:2 CR:0 TS:3 PmcIdx:0
CN:0x3d Cell:8 CR:2 TS:7 PmcIdx:0
CN:0x3e Cell:8 CR:2 TS:5 PmcIdx:0
Total OOS:5
2) Identify the PDCH that is out of sync using the procedure. Inject the same message inthe PICP as defined:
Inject this message twice. msg 0dbh 9000h 0 0 0 4 < UWORD CN number>
For example, if the channel number is 0x40, then: msg 0dbh 9000h 0 0 0 4 0 40h
3) Inject this message to find out wich MMS is caring the TS OOS. The first line of theoutput (EX: 00 …..) correspond to the PmcIdx:0.

6.12 Congestion feature in the PCU: disabling and changing TBF max
length
In case congestion situation is triggered at the PCU, i.e., when all downlink TSs have been assigned, it starts a round robin mechanism to give service to the MSs.
The round robin mechanism services the mobiles queued in the race downlink queue andthe downlink mobile queue in FIFO order, race downlink queue first. For each mobilethat can be serviced, the round robin mechanism starts a downlink TBF and thentransmits up through the first LLC frame boundary after the 2000th octet. When the lastLLC frame boundary has been transmitted, the TBF is ended and the next mobile in therace downlink queue or downlink mobile queue is serviced. If the mobile has moredownlink data to transmit, a request is enqueued in FIFO order in the downlink mobilequeue.
Here are a couple of message sends to DLS to control the congestion.
#to turn congestion offmsg_send 0ddh 9000h 0d7h 0 3005h 5 15 0
#to change min flow for congestionmsg_send 0ddh 9000h 0d7h 0 3005h 5 16 <hex value in 4 bytes>(this isthe timer at 2000 bytes default)
