PCSO HEADS THE PHILIPPINE DELEGATION TO THE 1st ASEAN CIVIL SERVICE GAMES By: Darcy Geronimo e Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) together with the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Government Corporations Athletic Association (GCAA) participated in the 1st ASEAN Civil Service Games (ACSG) to be held in Malaysia from Nov. 15 to 19, 2015. Other member agencies composing the delegate are athletes and officials from the Landbank of the Philippines (LBP), Philippine Gaming and Amusement Corporation (PAGCOR), PhilHealth, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), Social Security System (SSS), National Food Authority (NFA) and National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR). Heading the Philippine delegation, bearing the title “Chef de Mission” is PCSO Assistant General Manager for Administrative Sector Atty. Lauro A Patiag, who is also the Chairman of the PCSO Sports Committee. e PCSO Board of Directors is grateful for the opportunity to head the Philippine delegation and extends support to the activity and to the PCSO delegates. About 60 athletes and officials from the 10 ASEAN member countries joined and competed in the five feature sports, namely: badminton, table tennis, golf, tenpin bowling and futsal. Malaysia as the Chair of ASEAN for 2015 had tasked the Malayan Civil Service Council (MAKSAK) in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to lead in organizing the event, carrying the theme “Towards A People- Centered Civil Service in ASEAN”. e aim of the ACSG is to promote and intensify networking, friendship and understanding among the ASEAN member states (AMS) and at the same time support and encourage healthy lifestyle and sporting culture. e 5-day sporting games are open to public servants of AMS. e official mascot of the ACSG is a tiger named Putra, symbolizing courage, strength and passion of all athletes who will compete in the games. e PCSO Board of Directors wishes all the participants, the best of luck.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia--Ten ASEAN member countries battled it out in five different events: bowling, table tennis, golf, futsal and badminton, during the 1st ASEAN Civil Service Games (ACSG) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on November 15-19, 2015.

The 10 ASEAN nations who participated in the event were Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar, Singapore, and Vietnam. Each country was represented by their respective Chef de Missions or Head of the Delegates. For the Philippines, Atty. Lauro A. Patiag, Assistant General Manager for Administrative Sector of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) led the Philippine delegates composed of players from Civil Service Commission (CSC), PCSO, Philhealth, Landbank of the Philippines (LBP), Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Manila Water and Sewage System (MWSS), Social Security System (SSS), Government Service and Insurance System (GSIS), National Food Authority (NFA), National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

The weeklong event kicked-off with the opening ceremony that was held at the Perbadanan Stadium Malaysia, Kompleks Sukan Negara, (Panasonic Sports Complex) in Shah Alam on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at 8:00 pm. This momentous event gave every delegate a chance to show honor and pride by waving their respective flags. Honorable Tan Sri Dr. Ali Hamsa, Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia & Patron of the 1st ASEAN Civil Service Games 2015, delivered the welcome message for all the guests and delegates. During the parade, Atty. Patiag together with the other Chefs de Missions were awarded a trophy of recognition.

Afterwards a grand festivity showcased the local talents of Malaysia.

The games were held in five various sports facilities in Malaysia: Triways Sports Centre in Padang Jawa in Shah Alam for futsal; Sunway Mega Lanes, Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, Subang Jaya for bowling; Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam, Bukit Kiara, for golf; Gymnasium 2, Majlis Sukan Negara for table tennis; and Badminton Stadium in Cheras for badminton.

The Philippines waved their flag victoriously at the bowling lanes. It was in this competition where Mr. Oscar Abuan of MIAA bagged the gold medal on the Men’s VIP Competition, Singles Category, ten pin bowling upsetting the best players from other competing states.

While in the Team’s Event, the third place was bagged by the Men’s team comprising of Oscar Abuan (MIAA), Julius Catolico (SSS), Virgilio Matel (MWSS), and Ryan Romero (LBP). While in the women’s category, the Philippine team comprising of Maria Dolor “Dolly” Geling (PCSO), Susan Sarmie Viray (MIAA), Bella Lacar Ablan (NAPOCOR) & Gloria Doromal Quintos (PSC) placed 4th in the overall team standing, over-powering Lao, Vietnam, Cambodia and others.

Ending the weeklong event was a grand Gala Dinner at the Hotel Palace of the Golden Horses

in Seri Kembangan on November 19, 2015, which was sponsored by the Malaysian government. The night was filled with spectacular performances from the Malay Royal Dance who performed dances from several cultures such as Malaysia’s Tarian Zapin Tangkas Beralun (a folk dance of Malaysia that had a distinctive character of the mid-eastern musical influence.); China’s Tarian Cina “Journey Along A Silk Road”; India’s Tarian India; and Malaysia’s Tarian Sarawak “Tebah Rentap” (Serawak, better known as “State of the Hornbills”. Sarawak is located in East Malaysia; Tarian Sabah “Aku Anak Kampung” (Sabah, better known as states “Below the Wind”, also located in the Eastern part of Malaysia). Best local musicians in Malaysia also performed during the event: Jari, a versatile and well-known musician with more than 25 years of experience in the music industry, and Fauziah Gambus, the one and only established female gambus player and singer in Malaysia.

The 5-day games was opened to public servants of ASEAN member states (AMS), to improve friendship, networking and understanding through sports and serves as a catalyst towards promoting healthy lifestyle and sporting culture.
