Porsche Club News 1 /06 21 5. Reports Porsche Club South Africa, Cape Region Porsche Parade 2005 The 21st parade of the Porsche Club of South Africa heralded a new record: 110 Porsches took part in the event in Kapstadt which was held from the 19th to the 24th of October. Drivers from every age group vied with each other for glory and honour in various com- petitions such as the time trial and sprints at the Overberg Air Force Base. Others were looking for one of the top spots for their Porsche in the Con- cours d’Elégance. The range of vehicles on display spanned four decades of Porsche’s history – from the 1970s through to the present. Or particular note were a Super Cup car in which Toby Venter won the time trial in Killarney, and a 1973 911 Carrera RS owned by John Atkins which is one of the last remain- ing originals of its type in Germany. The gala evening also saw the pres- entation – to enthusiastic applause – of the brand new Carrera 4S. There were also cheers for the winners in the individual competitions who received their trophies over the course of the evening. The first three in each class received a prize, and with the many classes and five competitions in all it is no surprise that there were a total of 118 trophies handed out. Thanks to numerous sponsors such as Porsche AG, the Porsche South Africa Centre, Wesbank, Mobil 1 and Bigfood Express, the perfect organi- sation of the event and, last but not least, the magnificent weather, this parade was one of the best to date. Paradis Porsche in St. Tropez

The biggest challenge that alwaysfaces the organising team is makingthis traditional event more interestingand perfect than the previous year.Nobody need have worried about anincrease in the number of those attend-ing. For years Paradis Porsche in St.Tropez has attracted an ever-increas-ing number of Porsche enthusiasts. And there were numerous applicationsfor the 2005 event. Just under 350Porsches in fact – from Germany, Belgium, Spain, Britain, Italy, Luxem-bourg, Switzerland, Monaco and, lastbut not least, the French Porsche clubs– were expected at the park near theharbour in St Tropez.

As in the past 10 years, participantsattending on the Saturday were divid-ed into two groups. The first, consist-ing of around 100 cars, drove to thecircuit du luc racetrack where theywere able to enjoy a free drive withoutany restrictions. Rain had threatened, but the newly-surfaced track remaineddry. A photo rally was organised forthe rest of the participants. Sixty-fiveteams, split in two groups, set out on

a morning and afternoon tour to thehinterland where a lookout was keptfor predefined themes.

The novelty this year was a dinner/show at Stefano’s cabaret “StefanoForever” on the beach at Pampelonne.Following an extravagant cocktail andnumerous Amuse-Gueules, around 9.30in the evening Stefano joined partici-

pants in the dining hall at a Venetianbaroque-style cabaret where the brightcandles were reflected in the filigreeglass candelabra.

It was a superb evening with a fantas-tic revue – particularly the dancerswhose pièce de résistance was a rous-ing French cancan which certainlyraised the mood of those present.

The following morning, a gloriouslyblue sky over the park made it clearwhy this particular event is synony-mous with the word “paradise”. All ofthe Porsche models were representedat the Concours d’Elégance – from theCarrera GT to the 356. There weremore than 30 vehicles in the Classiccategory, including a 356 (Karmann,Speedster etc.), a 356 pre-A from1950, and a 911 S, 911 TR, 2,7 RSor 911 Targa.

The undoubted stars of the Moderncategory – which comprised 35 carsbuilt between 1978 and 1992 – werethe 911 Speedster and 911 Turbo.

There was also a group featuringaround 60 modern vehicles.

Lunch was followed by the traditionalparade, which wound its way throughthe streets of the town and, as ever, past the podium in front of the“Sénéquier” bar. The parade was head-ed by the Carrera GT, followed byaround 140 Porsches, the sight ofwhich was enthusiastically received bythose watching.

Come five o’clock the prizes wereawarded under the supervision of AnnePhilipp from Porsche AG and Club President Jean-Paul Viala. Prizes wereawarded by Porsche AG, PorscheFrance, Pirelli, the town of St Tropez,Flat 6, Car Lack 68 and CréationsPhenix.

A special prize was awarded to oneparticular married couple – the Vanden Brandens from Belgium – to marktheir twelfth visited the event. And, ofcourse, they will be there next time inOctober 2006. The Paradis Porschereminds many people of the words ofthe French poet Paul Éluard, whoexpressed a “strong desire for thingsto remain thus”.

Porsche Club Tirol

Premiere for Karwendel Trophy

The inaugural Karwendel Trophy – anevent organised by the Porsche ClubAustrian Association – was a fantasticsuccess. Porsche Club Tyrol, whichorganised the event, welcomed notonly participants from Styria, Viennaand Carinthia, but also from Germany,Luxembourg, Italy, Slovenia and Switzer-land. Following the reception the pre-vious evening and the drivers’ meetingin the baroque civic hall in the town ofHall in the Tyrol, the morning of the following day saw around 50 Porschesset off on a 286-kilometre tour.

The Road Book was the participants’guide through the beautiful KarwendelAlpine Park. The mountain scenery, the brightly coloured leaves of thetrees in the warm autumn sunshine andblue sky created an unforgettablescene. However, the drivers had totear their attention away from thisbeautiful sight, at least for the time trials, if they were not to squander theirchances of a victory.

The second day brought a challengingmountain test with a hidden time trial.A hearty cabin snack was followed bya trek to the Walder Alm. The day end-ed with a gala evening in the banquet-ing hall of the assembly rooms in Halland the prizegiving ceremony. Thelucky winner also received a flight fortwo in a private jet from Innsbruck toStuttgart to visit a Porsche plant.

The next day, a Porsche parade at theUpper Square in Hall – with music, vealsausage and Brezen pretzels – pro-vided a fitting end to the event. As amemento, participants took away withthem not just a host of wonderful mem-ories from the three days, but also the2005 Karwendel Trophy silver coinwhich each person had had struck

themselves in Hall’s famous mint, theBurg Hasegg. Many are already look-ing forward to their 2006 coin.

20, 20, 40 – those were the magicnumbers of our anniversary tour: 20years of the Porsche Club Zytglogge,20 cars and 40 participants. The out-ing took us to the fascinating world ofthe mountains and afforded us theopportunity to enjoy a quite specialtype of locomotion. But first thingsfirst. The tried and trusted InteralpenHotel Tyrol near Seefeld was chosenas the meeting point; in addition to apleasant atmosphere and good food, the hotel also offers generous parkingspaces for our vehicles.

The first day was a free day whichsome people used to go shopping inInnsbruck and Seefeld, while otherspreferred a hike in the mountains. Atprecisely quarter to five in the after-noon, everybody gathered at the hotelreception for the surprise that hadbeen promised. All sorts of specula-tion had abounded, with the organis-ers amused by some of the ideas beingcirculated. To prolong the anticipationstill further, there was first a gentle

stroll to a destination quite near to thehotel. Here, six horse-drawn carriageswere waiting, whose total brake horse-power of 12 was respected as muchby many of those present as that oftheir own Porsches.

To some, in fact, the jigger ofschnapps served beforehand provedquite convenient, dispersing as it didany doubts and having a positiveimpact on the the general good mood. The carriages then took the partici-pants, who were increasingly favour-ing this mode of transport, to theWildmoosalm where a snack wasenjoyed to the accompaniment of rous-ing folk music performed by localstars.

But our Porsches were given their ownchance, too. The following day, a con-voy made its way through the Ötztaland on to the Timmelsjoch where wewere inspired by the fabulous view ofthe wild yet fantastic surroundingmountains. With stopovers in St. Leon-

hard in Passeier, the Jaufen Pass andSterzing, we then made our way backso as not to miss the anniversaryApéro on the hotel terrace. The satis-fied expressions of the participants atthe end of the meeting showed justhow much everybody had enjoyed it.

Porsche Club Mainfranken

A journey to the south

The legend that is Porsche is nevermore apparent to members of thePorsche Club Mainfranken than whenthey are driving. So it was that a deci-sion was taken during a club eveningin the spring of 2005 to journey to thesunny South or, more precisely, toLake Garda.

The idea became reality at the end ofSeptember as nine Porsches set outon the several hundred kilometre long journey to Italy. The participantsenjoyed the approach to Lake Gardaover the Alps as they looked forwardto a taste of the dolce vita awaitingthem at the end of their journey. NearSalo, close to the lake, several clubmembers had located a small hotelwhich served as our base for the shortbreak.

One day was reserved for a visit to aweekly market and a boat trip. Thetour planned for the next day to takethe Porsches into the surrounding areahad to be called off due to theinclement weather. The reserve pro-gramme, which consisted of a visit to

the Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia anda visit to a factory outlet centre – notto mention fair sampling of the localcuisine – helped to ease the disap-pointment.

The sun was shining again the nextday, however, and plenty of time wasallowed for the return journey to visitsmall markets and idyllic villages – agradual parting from the sunny South.

Porsche Club Köln

Island experience

The trip had been meticulously pre-pared. After two years of planning, themembers of Porsche Club Cologne setout on a journey to the island of Sylt in October 2005. Some of the 21Porsches making their way to the northwere driven by members of PorscheClub Aachen. It was the first joint tourarranged by the two clubs, and was toprove a successful premiere.

A picturesque hotel in Rantum in thesouth of the island was the startingpoint for various excursions – with andwithout the Porsches – for getting toknow the many and diverse featuresof Sylt. There was more to discoverbetween pasture land and metre-highdunes than many had dreamt. It provedan advantage that some of the partic-ipants on this excursion had alreadyexperienced Sylt as a holiday destina-tion. The fish meal at Gosch, the visitto the oyster farm at Austernmeyerand a stop at the Kupferkanne – anartists’ cafe in a former bunker – wereall pleasing on the stomach and eyealike. The visit to the village of Keitum

with its numerous thatched historicalhouses provided a deep insight intothe history of the island, while the wan-der on the beach or along the Morsumcliff was not only healthy, but alsoinformative. Who would have thoughtbeforehand, for example, that theisland suffers from a loss of land dueto the power of the sea?

It would not be possible to squeezethe complete programme of this five-day trip into just a few lines, but suffice to say that newcomers to Syltwere surprised at just how much thisisland has to offer. Everybody hailedthe trip a success, with members ofthe two clubs successfully comingtogether, and a repeat of this particularevent has certainly not been ruled out.
