    Friars AllTime in Season Openers: Ater the team's 72-61 win on Saturday versus Fairleigh

    Dickinson, the Friars improved to 74-11 (.871) all-time in regular-season openers, in addition to a77-8 (.906) record in home openers. Providence opened the 2011-12 season at home or the 11th

    time in 12 years. The only time in the past dozen seasons the Friars did not open at home was the2007-08 season when they played Temple in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Providence has won nine o thelast 10 openers, with the lone deeat coming in the 2008-09 game, when they ell to Northeastern.

    OnDeck:The Friars will host the frst o two home games or the South Padre Island Invitational

    Friars vs. Florida A&M Series:The Friars will meet the Rattlers or frst time in program historyon Saturday November 19.

    Scouting Florida A&M:The Rattlers will have a new look this year as ormer University o Alaska Head Coach Clemon Johnson beginshis frst season with Florida A&M. Preseason Second Team selection Amin Stevens is returning as the team's leading rebounder (7.8

    rebounds per game), and leading scorer (13.6 points per game). This season Johnson has a veteran squad with only one reshman

    on the roster. In the MEAC Preseason Poll, Florida A&M was picked to fnish 13th.

    Friars vs. MEAC: The Friars have posted an all-time record o 9-1 (.900) against members o the Mid Eastern Athletic Conerence. Thelast time Providence played a MEAC team was on November 18, 2010, when the Friars deeated Morgan State, 77-55.

    Fairleigh Dickinson Game Recap:The Providence College men's basketball team deeated the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, 72-61

    on Saturday, November 12 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Ed Cooley earned his frst victory as head coach o Providence College and the Friars improved to 1-0 on the season. Four Providence players fnished in double-fgures including sophomore

    Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) who scored a team-high 18 points o the bench. Sophomore Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) added acareer-high 16 points, while junior Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.)recorded 12 points, and reshman LaDontae Henton (Lansing,

    Mich.) put in 10. The Friars led the Knights, 33-28, at the hal, asthey shot 41.4%, making 12-o-29 rom the feld. Providence shot

    50% rom behind the arc as it was 5-o-10. Freshman LaDontaeHenton (Lansing, Mich.) canned the frst basket o the season

    with a 3-pointer to give Providence an early 3-0 lead 30 secondsinto the contest. Fairleigh Dickinson tied it, 3-3, beore the Friars

    went on a 7-0 run and led, 10-3, with 16:18 let in the frst hal.Sophomore Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) scored eight o the Friars'frst 15 points, including a pair o 3-pointers. The Friar lead grew

    to as many as 12 (17-5) with 13:08 let in the frst hal. FairleighDickinson's junior guard Lonnie Hayes poured in 14 o his game-

    high 26 points in the frst hal. The Knights held a slight advantagein rebounding, 22-20.

    In the second hal, the Friars continued to build their lead, shooting47% rom the feld, making 15-31. The Friars outscored the Knights,39-33, and went on to earn their frst game o the season. Overall,

    the Friars shot 44.3% rom the feld, making 27-61 and held anadvantage in rebounds, 41-38. More importantly, the Friars held

    FDU to just 36.8 percent shooting.

    Ed Cooley Earns First Win: First-year Friar Head Coach Ed Cooleyopened the season with a 72-61 win over Fairleigh Dickinson onNovember 12. With the win, Cooley became the frst PC coach

    to begin his Friar career with a victory since Pete Gillen in 1994.Under Gillen, the Friars topped another New Jersey team, Rider,

    72-59, on November 26.

    Rookie Henton Earns The Start: Freshman orward LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) became just the 16th true reshman to starhis frst game as a Friar. Henton recorded 10 points and six rebounds in 35 minutes o action. He was 2-3 rom behind the three-poinarc. Last season, Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) started in his frst game or the Friars and registered a 17 points.

    Cotton's Improved Perormance: Sophomore Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) worked hard to improve his game over the summer and

    it has paid o. In the team's two exhibition games Cotton was the squad's leading scorer, averaging 21.0 ppg, while shooting animpressive 15-21 (.714) rom the feld and 5-9 (.556) rom behind the arc. In the Friars' season opening win over Fairleigh Dickinson

    on November 12, Cotton registered a career-high16 points and our assists.

    Council Comes O The Bench: Sophomore Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) came o the bench to score 18 points in the Friars' 72

    61 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on November 12. He was 6-10 rom the feld in 28 minutes o action.

    South Padre Island Invitational:The Friars will participate in the South Padre Island Invitational this season, with two games playedat the Dunkin' Donuts Center against Florida A&M on November 19 and Southern University and November 22, beore the team

    travels to South Padre Island, Texas, where they will take on Iowa State November 25 and Northern Iowa on November 26. The tripto South Padre Island will be the longest trip o the season or the Friars, measuring just over 2,180 miles rom Providence. The nexlongest trips are both in BIG EAST play. The Friars will travel to Tampa, Fla., to take on USF (1,144 miles) and Milwaukee, Wisc., to

    play Marquette (844 miles). Overall, the Friars are 76-54 (.584) while playing in in-season tournaments. They have won 14 in-seasontournament championships and fnished as a runner-up on 11 occasions. Last season, Providence hosted two games as part o the

    Cancun Challenge at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Friars deeated Morgan State (77-55) and Prairie View A&M (78-62). The Friars

    also played two games in Cancun as they lost to La Salle (84-73), and deeated Wyoming (84-77).

    Kadeem Batts: Providence College mens basketball Head Coach Ed Cooley announced on November 5 that sophomore Kadeem

    Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) has been suspended indefnitely or ailing to meet his obligations as a student-athlete. Batts, a 6-9 orward, started all 32 games last season or the Friars. He averaged 7.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season.

    Kiwi Gardner: It was announced on October 25 that the NCAA ruled that Providence College student-athlete Kiwi Gardners initiaeligibility coming out o high school does not meet the NCAA Division 1 requirements. Thus, he is not able to appear in competition

    The Providence College athletics department has appealed this ruling and is awaiting the decision on the appeal. Gardner is able topractice with the team while his decision is under appeal.

    Future Friars, Ed Cooley Has A National Ranked Recruiting Class: Providence College mens basketball Head Coach Ed Cooleyannounced on November 10, 2011 that student-athletes Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.), Ricky Ledo (Providence, R.I.) and Josh

    Fortune (Hampton, Va.), each signed a National Letter o Intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2012. Thesethree players make up one o the top recruiting classes in the nation. CBSSports.com rated Cooleys frst recruiting class as the fth

    best in the nation, while Scout.com has it ranked No. 8 and ESPN.com ranked the class as the ninth best in the country. It is one othe highest rated recruiting classes in the history o the program as the 1990 class (Dickey Simpkins, Michael Smith, Rob Phelps and

    Troy Brown) was ranked No. 4 in the nation and the 1974 class (Bruce Campbell, Bill Eason and Bob Misevicius) was ranked sixthDunn, a 6-oot-3-inch, 186-pound point guard attends New London (Conn.) High School where he plays or Head Coach Craig ParkeHe is the top-ranked point guard in the country, according to Scout.com and CBSSports.com. ESPN.com has him rated as the No. 2

    point guard in the class o 2012 and Rivals.com has ranked Dunn as the third best point guard. Last season, Dunn helped lead NewLondon High School to a 27-0 record and a state title ater averaging 26.5 points, 10 rebounds and fve assists per game in 2011. Fo

    his eorts, he earned the New Haven Registers State Player o the Year honors. Dunn played or the Connecticut Basketball Club AAUsquad. Ledo, a 6-oot-6-inch, 190-pound shooting guard is ranked as the No. 1 shooting guard in the class o 2012, according to Rivals

    com. He also has been ranked as the sixth best shooting guard in his class by ESPN.com and Scout.com. CBSSports.com has Ledo

    rated as the 17th best player overall. Ledo attends the South Kent School in Connecticut and is coached by Kelvin Jeerson. Ledoplayed or the Expressions Elite AAU team. Fortune, a 6-oot-5-inch, 180-pound shooting guard attends Kecoughtan High School in

    Virginia where he is coached by Ivan Thomas. As a junior, Fortune averaged 13.9 points per game. Fortune is ranked as the eighthbest player in the class o 2012 in Virgnia and the 34th best shooting guard in the class, according the ESPN.com. He played or the

    Boo Williams AAU program.

    Dave Gavitt Tribute: On September 16, 2011, Friartown lost an icon with the death o Dave Gavitt. He was known to most as a Halo Fame coach, athletic director and administrator and or his oresight and vision which led to the ormation o the Big East Conerence in 1979. Although he is no longer with us, Coach Gavitts memory will live on in Friartown. This season, all Friar athletic team

    will wear DG patches in honor o him. The mens basketball team will continue to play all its home games on the Dave Gavitt Courtat the Dunkin Donuts Center and his retired jersey will always hang in the raters.

    Friars Boast Veteran Backcourt: While the Friars do have to replace the scoring o2011 NBA frst-round drat pick Marshon Brooks, they return a veteran backcourt in

    junior point guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore guard GerardColeman (Boston, Mass.). Council enters his third season as the primary point guard

    or the Friars, having started 41 o the 64 games he has played, including all 32contests in 2010-11. Council is the top-returning scorer (13.7 ppg in 2010-11) and

    led the BIG EAST in assists a season ago with 5.9 per game. Council was also named

    one o the top 30 point guards in division 1 basketball, according to CBS Sports.Coleman returns as a dynamic two guard who was third on the team in scoring last

    season while twice earning BIG EAST Rookie o the Week honors. He averaged 10.2points per game while starting in 22 contests. He was the frst true reshman to start

    a season opener since 2005.

    Friars On TV and Radio:This season the Friars will have 26 o their 31 regular seasongames televised. Cox Sports will be covering the majority o the games, with ESPNnetworks airing a handul. For the 23rd consecutive season Joe Hassett and John

    Rooke will be broadcasting all 31 games on 103.7 WEEI FM.

    Frontcourt Looks To Keep Growing:The rontcourt or frst-year Head Coach EdCooley will be led by a pair o 6-9 orwards in junior Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.) and

    sophomore Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.). Dixon, who redshirted his frst yearat Providence, was named to the Sporting News BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2009-10. Over two seasons, he is averaging 6.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Batts,

    who also redshirted his frst year on the Providence campus, averaged 7.1 points and5.8 rebounds in 2010-11. His top perormances included a pair o double-doubles

    against South Florida (19 points, 11 rebounds on Jan. 16) and Cincinnati (17 points,11 rebounds on Feb. 19).

    Friars Led BIG EAST In Scoring:The 2010-11 Providence College men's basketballteam led the BIG EAST Conerence in scoring, averaging 75.8 points in 32 total

    games. That scoring average was good or 31st in the nation. In addition, the Friarsaveraged 72.4 points in their 18 BIG EAST games, a total that ranked second behind

    Marquette's 73.2 ppg.

    (26.0 ppg). He averaged 26.0 ppg in 18 league games, which is the fth highestsingle-season average in 32 years o BIG EAST play. Brooks provided 32.5 percent o

    the team's oense becoming just the second Friar since 1967 to account or at least30 percent o the team's scoring.

    Friars AllTime Versus Top25 Teams: The Friars have posted a 100-224 (.309)mark all-time versus top-25 teams. Last season, Providence had two wins over

    ranked teams. The victory over No. 8/7 Villanova on January 26, 2011 coupled withthe Friars win over No. 18/15 Louisville on January 22, 2011 marked the frst time

    Providence won consecutive games against ranked teams since December 1998.In 1998, the Friars deeated No. 9/8 Purdue, 87-82, on Dec. 27, beore downing No.23/23 Pittsburgh, 83-68, on Dec. 30. It also marked the frst win or Providence over

    Batts DoublesUp On DoubleDoubles:Sophomore orward Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs,Ga.) registered a pair o double-doubles during his rookie campaign. He recorded 19 points

    and 11 rebounds in a 79-72 loss at South Florida on January 16, beore contributing 17 pointsand grabbing 11 rebounds against Cincinnati on February 19. For the season, Batts averaged

    7.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while starting every contest.

    Council Emerges As A Scoring Threat: Junior guard Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.), whoearned BIG EAST All-Rookie Team honors in 2010, avoided the dreaded sophomore slump in2010-11. The point guard was second in the team in scoring (13.7 ppg) and frst on the team

    in assists (5.9 apg) a season ago. He scored 13 or more points in 22 games, including a career-high 29 points in the Friars' win over Wyoming on November 24, 2010.

    Providence College Basketball: 2011-12 is the 85th season o basketball at Providence Col-lege. Since the program started in 1926-27, Providence has posted a 1,302-874 mark, good or

    Head Coach Ed CooleyOn March 22, 2011 Ed Cool-

    ey became the 15th head coachat Providence College. Cooley

    came to Providence Collegeater spending ive seasonsas the head coach at Fairfeld

    University.

    "When Bob and I sat downwith Mike Tranghese and wetalked about what we were

    looking or in our next coach,we quickly agreed that the No.1 candidate or Providence Col-

    lege is Ed Cooley," ProvidenceCollege President Fr. Brian

    Shanley, O.P. said. "I wanted acoach that could teach our play-

    ers about the game o lie. I also wanted a relationship builderand Ed is a relationship builder. He will connect with our players,our ans and the entire state o Rhode Island. I could not be more

    thrilled to have Ed Cooley as our basketball coach."Prior to coming to Providence, Cooley guided Fairfeld to a

    school-record 25 wins and a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conerenceregular season title in 2010-11. He was named the 2011 MAAC

    Coach o the Year. He also earned United States Basketball Writ-ers Association (USBWA) District I Coach o the Year honors. His

    2011 squad fnished the season with a 25-8 mark (15-3 MAAC)and advanced to the second round o the NIT.

    In fve seasons at Fairfeld, Cooley's teams posted a 92-69

    mark, including a 58-32 record in MAAC action. Cooley becamethe frst Fairfeld head coach to guide the team to a .500 or better

    mark in MAAC action in each o his frst fve seasons. In 2009-10,

    he led the Stags to a 23-11 mark and the team's frst post-seasonberth since 2003. In that win, Fairfeld set a NCAA Division Ipost-season record as the team overcame a 27-point, second-haldefcit to deeat George Mason in overtime. For his eorts in 2010,

    Cooley was the frst recipient o the Ben Jobe Award, presentedannually to the top minority men's basketball coach in the nation.

    Prior to taking the Fairfeld position, Cooley spent 10 seasonsas an assistant coach or Al Skinner. He coached or one season

    at Rhode Island under Skinner (1996-97) and nine seasons as anassistant at Boston College (1997-06), where the Eagles posteda 175-108 mark and advanced to fve NCAA Tournaments and

    one NIT. Cooley also helped lead the Eagles to the 2001 BIG EASTTournament title and three BIG EAST regular season titles (2001,

    2003 and 2005). In 2004-05, Boston College started the seasonwith a school-record 20 consecutive wins. In 2005-06, the Eagles

    advanced to the Atlantic Coast Conerence championship gameagainst Duke.

    At BC, Cooley was instrumental in the recruitment o Troy

    Bell, a two-time BIG EAST Player o the Year. Bell also went on toplay proessional basketball ater leaving Boston College, which

    included a stint in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies.A 1994 graduate o Stonehill College, where he was a three-

    time captain or the basketball team, Cooley began his coachingcareer at UMass-Dartmouth. He helped lead UMass-Dartmouth toa 25-4 mark and a No. 3 national ranking (1994-95). He returned

    to his alma mater, Stonehill, and served as an assistant coach o

    one season (1995-96) beore joining Skinner's sta at URI.Cooley, a native o Providence, attended Central High Schoo

    and earned two Rhode Island High School Player o the Year honors. He also did a post-graduate year (1988-89) at North Hampton

    Prep. beore attending Stonehill. He and his wie, Nurys, have onedaughter, Olivia, and one son, Isaiah.
